GAFFER’S NOTES SPONSORED BY

G

ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match with Southend United. I’d like to extend that welcome to Kevin Bond, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the journey up from Southend to today’s game. Myself and Clint Hill know Bondy really well from our time at QPR, and we know that he will have his team well organised for today’s game. Other than today, we wish him and his staff all the best for the remainder of the current campaign. We have dedicated today’s fixture to support the work of Kick It Out in their 25th anniversary season and encourage our supporters to get behind everything they do. For 25 years, Kick It Out has played a vital

role in ensuring that everyone, regardless of background is welcome in our game. This season, we have seen a number of high-profile incidents that prove the sport needs to support their work now more than ever. Their message of equality is extremely important to us at Fleetwood Town and this is why we’re supporting Kick It Out today and encourage you all to report any discrimination you hear or witness at a game. We come into today’s game on the back of two straight victories against Plymouth and Accrington, and two performances I was really pleased with. Especially last Saturday at Accrington, against a team who are fighting for their lives and on a difficult surface, we answered every question defensively and were probably a little unlucky to not win by more goals.

I want to say a big thank you to our outstanding support that we had last Saturday at Accrington. For me, it was our best away support of the season, and the backing that the lads got definitely got the team over the line and three crucial points. The gauntlet has been thrown down for the rest of the season – both at home and away – and if we are to continue winning we need the supporters with us. Enjoy today’s game,

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

FOR SOUTTAR WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Defender Harry Souttar eager to build on the impact made last season in his second spell at Highbury, after returning on-loan from Stoke City.

H

arry Souttar has been welcomed back to Fleetwood Town with open arms. The central defender stood tall on the Mount as a drone camera circled the promenade before panning in on him, accompanied by dramatic music. A confident wave to camera and a reintroduction that would have delighted his growing fan base in the town, “We did that in one take. Call me OneShot Souttar!” With just eleven appearances in his first loan during the second half of last season, Harry quickly established himself in the hearts of the Cod Army. “Yes, I think they know that I always give my best every time I go on the park. As a fan that’s all you can ask for.” Testimony to him was the amount of clamour on social media over the summer as to whether he would be returning to Highbury. “I’m delighted to be back. I’ve not stopped smiling since I arrived! I definitely want to give something back to the club who showed faith in me. “It was my first experience of a run of games in English football and ended on a bit of a sour note with injuries and a three-match suspension for the sending-off against Barnsley in April. “It made me even more determined to come back and serve the team as best as I can.” Harry began strongly, nominated for Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for February, despite a tough schedule of fixtures. “It was a nice accolade in what was my first full month at the club. I did not really know what to expect when I arrived, neither did the fans. “I just remember trying to do the basics well in the first few games here. It was a

44

tough start with Charlton Athletic, later to be promoted, at home, followed by Bradford City away. “We came away with one-nil victories in both games. Losing 2-1 at home to leaders Luton Town was unfortunate. I thought we deserved more from that game. “Then, it was another clean sheet and 1-0 win, this time at Burton Albion. All in all, February was a pretty good month for the club and for me. “I wanted to progress from there and finish the season as strongly as I had started it for Fleetwood. Being unable to do that certainly drove me to want to return. “The sending-off was something I have definitely learned from. Some would say it was a rash tackle on Cameron McGeehan but for me the video showed that I only had eyes for the ball and did not attempt to hurt the player. “Over my career I do get penalized more for my size, and particularly the size of my arms, than a smaller player might do. I tell the referees every game but they just tell me to get on with it. I’m hoping that one of them might eventually understand!” During March, Harry was away for thirteen days representing Australia U23s who had three matches in the pre-Olympic qualifying competition. They were held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, against the home side, Chinese Taipei and Korean Republic. “We got through to the Asia Cup as the top ranked second-placed side in the competition. “The sixteen-team tournament will be held in Thailand in January and if we reach the semi-final of that we will qualify for the Olympic Games. “That is a big incentive. Having watched the Olympics throughout my life, taking part is not something that I thought I’d ever

do. To qualify and be part of it would be a great achievement for me.” For a twenty-year old raised on the east coast of Scotland this was an unlikely development. “I spoke to the goalkeeper, Adam Federici, an Australian who is at Stoke City, and Ryan McGowan who was in the first team at Dundee United when I was in the Youth Team. The conversation turned to family and the fact that my mother is Australian born. One or two phone calls and meetings later and we were off and running! “We won the first match 6-0 against Cambodia and I played in the next two. We won 6-0 against Chinese Taipei and drew 2-2 against the Korean Republic. “We got through on a tricky pitch which could have produced a banana skin type of shock. It was a case of job done, really. “The temperature was in the late twenties or early thirties but we trained late in the day and the games were at night. “We weren’t exposed to the most intense heat. I acclimatized quite well. It was certainly different from Brechin! The family stayed at home, it was a few steps too far for them! “I’ve got a taste for international football now and it was good to meet the lads and be in and amongst them although there wasn’t a lot of time to gel and spend time together. “Two were connected with English football, one of them connected with Fleetwood, in fact! Aiden O’Neill had been at Fleetwood on loan from Burnley a couple of years back and spoke very happily about the club. “Then there was a lad called Jordan Holmes who I got on really well with. He is a goalkeeper and on St. Mirren’s books at the time.

"I'M DELIGHTED TO BE BACK. I'VE NOT STOPPED SMILING SINCE I ARRIVED! I DEFINITELY WANT TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK TO THE CLUB WHO SHOWED FAITH IN ME." “Overall, there was a good mix of lads. A couple of others had European connections but most of them played in Australia. “I was kind of lucky when I went away. Although, I was absent for thirteen days I was due to miss just one game. However, it was the Sunderland game which was postponed due to internationals. “Not missing any games was a bonus. I flew back on the Thursday and we played Accrington Stanley away on the Saturday. I scored the winning goal from a header. It was a brilliant corner from Ross Wallace right on to my head and I just did the rest!” “Following the end of the season, I went away with the Australian first team to a training camp. It was a great experience and the standard was really high. “It was a wonderful experience that I will try to learn from. Then I had a short break before returning to Stoke City for a couple of weeks. I went to Holland on their pre-season tour. It was brilliant to be among their big players. “I trained alongside Ryan Shawcross who is a great professional with plenty of Premier League experience under his belt. “I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves for how good a player he is. He’s always in first and away last and there are good reasons why he has played so many games. To be learning off such guys is great experience.

“Deep down I knew that I wanted to come back to Fleetwood Town. “The Stoke manager, Nathan Jones, told me that I would be going out on loan again so my mind was made up. He had come in in January when I think it had been pretty much decided what the plans would be for me. “We had an honest chat and all parties were happy for me to get further experience elsewhere. There was only one place for me after that. “I spoke to my agent and kind of told him where my head was at. I told him to get the deal done. “These days the matters are very much handled by the club and the agents so I didn’t have too much contact with Fleetwood other than speaking to a couple of the players and they knew how much it meant to me to come back. After the end of last season, it is definitely a case of unfinished business for me. “It’s great to be involved in two high-profile friendlies this week, a real test of where we are ahead of the season. “Rejoining training this week, it is clear that the intensity is at a pretty high level. “All the running and base work has been done while I was away, doing the bleep tests and others with Stoke City! Having played for Fleetwood at Carlisle United last weekend, Harry sported his new number six shirt as he returned to Highbury on Tuesday against Premier League side Burnley.

Defending against a strong team including the likes of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood will have provided worthy preparation for the League One campaign ahead. Two opportunities to head a goal past former England keeper, Joe Hart, went begging but will have increased the Scot’s resolve to get on the scoresheet a time or two during the coming season! “I don’t think that many footballers will admit to liking pre-season but everyone will tell you that it has to be done. “The harder you work the more you will benefit from the effort later on. My aim is to achieve success this season with Fleetwood. The lads have really welcomed me back and the banter is still there as much as ever in the dressing room. “That is one of the reasons why I wanted to come back. “I enjoyed it so much last time round. Take Ash Hunter, for instance. He’s always on the move and like a little cousin!’ Harry is Fleetwood Town’s sixth signing this season, following some quality players into the club, ‘Yes, they are all good players and Paul Coutts is born in Aberdeen so we share that!’ Physically tall and tall in stature, Harry Souttar will surely endear himself even more to the fans at Fleetwood this season. COMMUNITY TRUST HOSTING FIVE WEEKS OF MULTI-SPORTS AT SHAKESPEARE PRIMARY!

NCS TAKE 45 YOUNG ADULT ON SUCCESSFUL TRIP TO TOWER WOOD IN THE LAKE DISTRICT!

Alongside our Summer Sports Camps at Poolfoot Farm and Carleton Green, we will also be hosting five weeks of multi-sports at our new school venue, Shakespeare Primary School. Some of you might have been on the last camp we held at the school, but now is your chance to make the most of five weeks of action packed fun! With football, dodgeball, tennis and much more, we guarantee your child will come home happy after a day with us. Prices start at just £10 for a day, or £45 for the week - saving £5 if you book for five days. Now that most school have now broken up for the summer, if your child would love to get involved with the many activities on offer, call 01253 208442 for more details – we can’t wait to see as many as you there on Monday morning!

Our Trust’s National Citizen Service (NCS) programme have been at Tower Wood in the Lake District for an off-site adventure as part of their three week course. With over 45 young adults on the course this year – meaning this is our biggest yet. They’ve all got involved in all the activities that the staff has put on which is always nice to see. And with the sunshine out, the participants have been on Lake Windermere on kayaks, sailing boats and self-build water rafts, with a trip down to Fell Foot & a hike back up the hills. It has been a fantastic five days with plenty of smiles from both NCS staff, Tower Wood staff, and also the boys and girls who attended. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Tower Wood who have accommodated us throughout the week, and we look forward to coming back in the near future.
