ood afternoon and welcome back to Highbury for our opening home Sky Bet League One match of the season against AFC Wimbledon. I’d like to extend that welcome to Wally Downes, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters of Wimbledon, who have made the long journey north today. We come into today’s game on the back of a great start at Peterborough United last weekend. Obviously the result was a brilliant one, but the manner of our performance also pleased me and the rest of the coaching team. For those supporters who saw our last pre-season matches against Burnley and Preston, you will know that we were making great progress in the way we wanted to play, as well as integrating our new signings into the team. However, the message that we have got

across to the players this week is that we have to back this up with another win, against a tough side in AFC Wimbledon. We know from experience how difficult it is to play against AFC Wimbledon, having lost at Highbury twice to them last season. Both games were totally different – my first match in management and a FA Cup third round tie – but we feel that we are a different team since then, and our last result against them was a comprehensive 3-0 victory at their place in January. They’ve recruited well this summer and will always be a difficult opponent to beat under Wally’s management, so we know we will have to be at our best to win today. This week also saw the return of Ched Evans, who signed back for the club on a permanent

basis. I spoke the previous week at the Fans’ Forum about how hard everybody at the club was working to bring Ched back, so to get the deal done is massive for the club and I know you, the supporters, will be delighted to see him pull on a Fleetwood shirt once again. Thank you for your continued support, and enjoy today’s game.

CAPTAIN COUTTS LOVING

LEADING COD ARMY WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Paul Coutts is looking to build on an impressive pre-season and opening day win at Peterborough United, today against AFC Wimbledon.

P

aul ‘The Cobra’ Coutts has shone on the darts oche before getting a chance with Fleetwood Town! Ten days before the new season started he showed his prowess with the arrows, defeating World Matchplay semi-finalist and Middlesbrough fan, Glen Durrant, on the famous Empress Ballroom stage. “Ha! I think Glen took it easy on us, to be fair, but it was an enjoyable afternoon. It was good to get up on stage and see it from the players’ perspective. “It’s different for us playing football under floodlights but I don’t think that people realise the intensity of being on the big stage and it makes you appreciate just how good players such as Glen really are. It was nice to meet some of the other darts guys as well.” It wasn’t the first time the 31 year-old has traded shots with a pro. “Jamie Caven lived not far from me in Derby. He opened up a darts academy for the kids while I was down there. “I went along on the opening night, played a few legs with him and we got quite pally.” Born in 1988 and brought up in Aberdeen, Paul was connected with the club from the age of eight. “I grew up supporting Aberdeen. Everyone from Aberdeen tended to support the club. “My uncle played for them for a while before moving south to play for Wigan Athletic when they were a non-league side. My Dad was a dead keen fan. “I was kicking a ball around from first thing, out in the streets and parks till you were told to come in as it got dark. It’s different for kids these days with computer games and the like.”

44

Paul’s favourite Aberdeen player over the years is no less than Fleetwood coach, Barry Nicholson. “Baz played during some of the better times when there were European nights. I later had chance to wind him up about it at Preston!” Paul was to experience his first setback at the age of sixteen. “I was told that I was too small so was released then I had a growth spurt after I left! “It was really difficult to accept at the time but it stood me in good stead for the future. It didn’t do me any harm to experience rejection early. “There are loads of disappointments in the game and you have to be able to react and move on.” Paul played as a semi-professional at Cove Rangers, a local senior club in the Highland League. “I was combining football and working for an oil company onshore. I loved playing part-time with ex-pros and men who wanted to win each Saturday. “I was a kid who had just left an academy and learned a huge amount in a short space of time.” Paul was part of a Highland titlewinning team and the League’s Player of the Year in 2007-08. His name was linked with a few clubs in the Scottish Premier League and he had gone to speak to them. “Dad was pushing for me to go south to a bigger market. In 2008, I got an opportunity to go to Peterborough United under Darren Ferguson. “I travelled 450 miles in a car with a suitcase and moved in with George Boyd. It seems a huge upheaval but I just took it

in my stride. At that age you don’t think too much about it. “We got promoted in my first season at Peterborough so I went from winning the Highland League title as a part-time player to the Championship a year later. Football’s great isn’t it!? “There are huge differences between the two leagues. I can point to fitness, speed and power but there is also a much greater expectation from the fans, the manager and players alike.” In 2010, he linked up again with Ferguson, now manager at Preston North End. “Darren’s had a big influence on my career. We’ve always kept in touch. He’s a good manager and a good guy.” Paul’s goal against Colchester United on the opening day of the 2011/12 season was one of five nominees for the Football League Goal of the Year Award. Having received the ball forty yards out, he beat four defenders before firing a shot past the keeper. “It was a cracker but despite getting close nationally I didn’t even get the Goal of the Season at Preston as Graham Westley had become manager and fallen out with me!” Having been a regular under Ferguson, then Phil Brown, at Preston things went pear-shaped for him after Westley arrived in January 2012. “At one point, Westley took the captaincy off me before giving it back a week later, when I was suspended in between anyway! “He sent me home and complained in the press about my attitude. He had a unique way of going about things. It was a bizarre time.

"growing up as a kid i was kicking a ball around from first thing, out in the streets and parks till you were told to come in as it got dark. it's different from kids these day with computer games!" “They changed the wage structure when I went in and Westley did his own thing. However, I met some good guys who didn’t always get the credit or respect that they deserved. “Jon Parkin was one such. He was an unbelievable guy, a fascinating character and a big man with a clever touch. “I decided I needed to leave with Westley in charge and go somewhere which suited my style. It felt like the place was falling apart when I left but now it has rebuilt and they are doing well. “At the time it was a shame to see what was happening. “I met Nigel Clough at Derby County in 2012, saw the facilities and was impressed. Derby was a big club in every way. “I think that they had the biggest average attendance in the Championship the year before. I enjoyed my time there but, unfortunately, a bad injury at Leicester City knocked me back. “I dislocated my knee cap and missed the second half of the season which culminated in the play-off final against Queens Park Rangers in 2014. “There was a change of manager, Steve McLaren coming in.” Nigel Clough moved on and Paul followed him to Sheffield United in 2015. “Nigel phoned me at a time when I was coming on from the bench for Derby and in my last six

months of my contract at Pride Park. It was a step down at the time but I ended up taking a couple forward. “Two promotions followed and I had a brilliant time at Bramall Lane. Momentum just grew and grew. “It’s the highlight of my career…so far! Although we didn’t lose many games, Fleetwood were a bit of a sticky side for us! “As we moved into the Premier League I got the chance to stay but felt it was time to move on. Yes, I felt part of the set-up but not as a regular. “I was the wrong side of 30 and had got to maximize what I had left in my playing career. It was likely that I would have played less in the Premier League. “I spoke to Joey Barton through the summer and was very impressed with what he had to say about Fleetwood. “I felt that I could learn a lot from him, particularly as a fellow midfielder. Also, the facilities at Poolfoot were brilliant.” After previous captaincy experience at both Preston and Sheffield United, Paul wore the armband in pre-season. “I’ve always enjoyed the captain’s role. It’s a huge honour. Now, I just can’t wait to start the new season.” It proved to be a memorable opening day for the quietly spoken Scot.

He led Fleetwood as they won 3-1 at former club Peterborough United. On the opposite side was former flat-mate George Boyd! At the same time, Cove Rangers were marking their Scottish League debut in style with a 5-0 win against Edinburgh City. Paul is proud of his Scottish roots and honoured to have won eight Under 21 caps. “Yes, a proud achievement but, unfortunately, a full cap has eluded me. When I’ve been playing well, injuries have come at the wrong time.” The darts oche isn’t the only sporting location where Paul has shone. He has also shown his skill on the golf course. I asked him for a putting tip! “It’s the gaffer you want to ask for that after the putt which birdied the 18th in Portugal to get a half for him and Eddy (Jennings) against Coyley and me!” Paul recognizes the importance of getting away from the intensity of football from time to time. “It’s nice to take my mind off the game from time to time. “However, my priority is to do well for Fleetwood this season.” Paul Coutts’s influence has already been evident around Poolfoot and signing a player of his Championship pedigree is another indication of how far our club has come.

PRE-SEASON LFE ERASMUS TOUR TO MADRID *

*

*

*

The Under 18s travelled to Madrid, Spain on the 28th July for a 12 day pre-season training camp, which involved the first and second year scholars taking on three Spanish sides (Rayo Vallecano, Getafe and Atletico Madrid) and intense training sessions on and off the grass. The trip – which was an Erasmus funded League Football Education (LFE) getaway – saw the group based at the Ciudad de Futbol (Spanish National Headquarters), with all the players and staff taking advantage of a language and cultural programme. These sessions throughout the camp was proven to be a huge success, with this enhancing the players educational skills, especially when Spanish coaches delivered sessions to the group, giving them a different style of football to learn whilst out there. With this, we are sure to hear some fluent Spanish being spoken around Poolfoot following the players return. When there was no training and matches to be played, it was time to explore the city and take in the famous Santiago Bernabeu – the home of Real Madrid. The lads enjoyed looking around the ground, taking selfies with many European Cups and La Liga titles in the back-

ground, and seeing what it would be like to play in front of a huge crowd on the biggest stage. A trip to the local Aqua Park was on the agenda, and with the hard work completed on the training pitches, the players got the chance to swap their studded boots to the flip flops. This was a day all enjoyed before it was back to the hard grafting at the Spanish Headquarters ahead of their final game of the pre-season tour in Madrid. The whole trip to Madrid has been a huge success. The players have learnt so much on and off the pitch with their language lessons, the coaching sessions from the top level Spanish coaches, as well as what they have picked up from in their three games against the Rayo Vallecano, Getafe and Atletico Madrid. Everybody on the trip would like to thank those involved in making the trip what it was, and the LFE for their assistance throughout. The Under 18s will play their first league game of the season on Saturday 17th August at Poolfoot Farm (kick-off 10:30am) against Bury FC. Supporters are welcome to attend the match free of charge to watch the young Cod Army in action. Fleetwood v Burnley Fleetwood Town v Town AFC Wimbledon

TRUST ANNOUNCE NEW AMBASSADORS FOR THE 2019/20 SEASON!

PLAYERS GET INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY TRUST’S SUMMER SPORTS CAMPS!

Every year the Community Trust choose four ambassadors to represent the Trust in a variety of areas from education, health and sport. This year the Trust have decided to go one better and announce a Youth Ambassador for the next 12 months. First-team players Alex Cairns (Sporting), Ashley Eastham (Education), Wes Burns (Inclusion) and Josh Morris (Health) are our ambassadors for the upcoming season. Also, after his work with the National Citizen Service, James Hill – who made his Fleetwood senior debut against Peterborough last season – will be the Youth Ambassador. Within the players role, they will represent the club and promote the club’s themes and agendas to the winder community, whether that is on matchdays or visits to school in and outside of term time.

With the Trust hosting their summer sports camp, five players from the Fleetwood Town went to visit the three venues (Shakespeare Primary School, Carleton Green and Poolfoot Farm. Josh Morris and Craig Morgan went to Shakespeare on Tuesday and took part in a variety of activities, one being dodgeball where the players took on each other with the children getting right in the thick of the action. Lewie Coyle and Harry Souttar went down to see the children at Carleton Green camp, with the staff on the day setting up fun games for all to take part in. Lewie also went with Ged Garner and James Cottam to Poolfoot Farm to the soccer camp, taking questions from those in attendance and also getting involved in football games. If you are interested in getting down to any of our sports camps, please contact the Trust on (01253) 208442.
