G

ood afternoon and welcome back to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match against Oxford United. I’d like to extend that welcome to Karl Robinson, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the long journey to the Fylde Coast today. It’s good to be back home after our last two matches away from Highbury. I thought that we were unlucky to not come away from Lincoln with anything, because we controlled the game for large periods and unfortunately a minute of madness cost us the points. I’m confident that the team will learn from that game, and if we play like that across the entirety of the season, then

2

our performances will pick up the points that they deserve. Our EFL Trophy campaign started on Tuesday night at Accrington, and again we were unfortunate in not getting off to a better start after controlling the game even after we were down to 10 men after 25 minutes. The less said about some of the tackles and decisions the better! The transfer window closed on Monday and I’m pleased to say that we were able to bring in Jimmy Dunne on loan from Burnley for the remainder of the season. I know Jimmy from my time at Burnley when he was a young pro, he’s a bright character and in addition I’m sure he will bring real quality to our back line and will enhance our squad both

on and off the field. I’m sure you’ll give him a warm Highbury welcome today. Onto today’s visitors. Karl has done a great job and put together a strong squad at Oxford United. We know that we will have to right at it to get the three points today, but our home form has been superb so far, and I know the lads are eager to continue that run today. Enjoy the game,

GILKSSFEATURE GMATT AFFER’ NOTES

MATT GILKS NO FEATURE GAF F ER’S T ES

GILKS KEEN TO IMPRESS

AT FLEETWOOD WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Experienced goalkeeper Matt Gilks joined the Cod Army in the summer, and kept his first clean sheet in our last home game against Accrington.

W

hen he made his Fleetwood Town debut at home to Wycombe Wanderers last month, 37 year-old Matt Gilks became the oldest goalkeeper to represent Town in the EFL. Some smart saves late in the second half kept his side in the game. “You are taught to concentrate as a youngster and after twenty years in the game I’ve got used to keeping mine for ninety-five minutes or so. “It’s paramount that a keeper is switched on at all times. It got us a point in the end but that’s what I’m there to do for the team.” It has been a lengthy career and Matt willingly concedes that he has overachieved. “I keep getting described as the last of a dying breed. I was born in Rochdale and they were my first club. “Over the following two decades I’ve played Premier League football and got three Scotland caps as well. I’ve made the most of my talents.” Matt’s roots are firmly set in Greater Manchester. “I’ve always lived between Rochdale and Oldham, in the Royton area. I was an Oldham Athletic fan growing up. “My dad, my brother and I were season ticket holders and proper fans. We went to see them twice at Wembley. “They were great days under Joe Royle. I can still see Boundary Park from my window.” Befitting a man proud of his home area, goalkeeping heroes were two local players, Andy Rhodes and Jon Hallworth. “They have since become my friends as have other Oldham players like Richard Jobson and Andy Barlow. Andy Rhodes literally lives over the hill and we have a pint or two together from time to time.

44

“I was lucky enough to get a three-year YTS at Rochdale but finished up playing at Chesterfield in my second year, age 17. “Injury and illness ruled out our first two choice goalkeepers. “I think the club tried to get the game called off but fortunately for me they didn’t. It was a case of sink or swim and I came through it. “I think Chesterfield were top but we got a draw. I was off and running.” Over seven years at Spotland, Matt made 198 appearances. “I would have loved 200 but it was a great grounding for me in League Two football. “There were some tough players around. You had to grow up quickly and keep your head above water.” With his contract expiring, he moved across country to Norwich City in 2007. “From living at my parents’ house, suddenly I was in East Anglia. “Going in on my first day I had Luke Chadwick on my left and Dion Dublin on my right. “Dion’s a wonderful man and we are very good friends. “Darren Huckerby was a star player and David Marshall, who is now at Wigan, was goalkeeper. I ended up playing at Scotland with him.” After a season of limited opportunity at Carrow Road, Matt swapped coasts, part of an exchange deal with Blackpool’s Wes Hoolahan. Despite a slow start at Bloomfield Road, it was to become a defining period in his career. “Blackpool was closer to home and gave me a better chance of playing at Championship level. “It was a tough first twelve months, though. I was struggling to break in and

never thought I’d make the first team. I remember a training session at Squires Gate. “It was as windy as I’ve ever known and the rain was coming in horizontal. I didn’t want to be there and walked off. “I soon got my head around it, came back and got some loan experience with Shrewsbury.” As with Rochdale, his Blackpool debut came in unusual circumstances. It was January 2009. “Paul Rachubka was sent off after three minutes against Palace. I had literally just sat on the bench with a brew and I was being called on!” Four months later, Ian Holloway came in. “After a dozen or so fixtures he said, ‘I can’t ignore you any more.’ “I played for the next five years. What we achieved was nothing short of a miracle. Holloway was as mad as a hatter but a breath of fresh air. “He had so much enthusiasm it had to rub off on the lads. He was a character and a believer in people. “He believed even more in me than I did and when you are getting that from a manager it gives you incredible confidence. “Some days it would be lashing with rain outside and he’d say, ‘Come on, we’ll head to the cafe.’ Stephen Crainey and I talk about those times every day and the lads are still in touch every week. We were a really closeknit group.” Premier League football took Matt to the great clubs across the land. “I particularly enjoyed playing at Anfield. My mum’s a Liverpool supporter. “We got a great result there, winning 2-1. I remember being one down at Stamford Bridge after forty odd seconds.

"I HAD PLAYED WITH JOEY BARTON AT BURNLEY AND RANGERS. WE WERE AS DAFT AS EACH OTHER." Didier Drogba was a man mountain. Ashley Cole just literally ran up and down the left flank for the ninety minutes. “It made you realise what you are aiming for as a player. “There have been certain points in my career when I’ve needed a little push. One was when I played for Scotland. “It would be around this time - I qualified through my grandmother. “I remember watching Darren Fletcher and Kenny Miller and thinking that I might have played Premier League but I’m way off the levels they are reaching in training. “I’ve been fortunate with injuries. There was a cruciate eighteen months ago and dislocations but they are normal for a keeper. “Over twenty years I’ve probably lost a season and a half which isn’t bad. “When you can extend your career like this it makes you realise how fortunate you are. “You’ve stood the test of time and there will be many better than you whose careers have been much shorter. “Burnley came out of the blue in 2014. The levels and standards set by Sean Dyche were incredibly high. “They really exceeded anything I’d been used to. “It took me a while to adapt to that. Tom Heaton was at Turf Moor and I’d like to think that I went in and made him a better keeper.

“However, I knew I was never going to play. I felt I had plenty of playing days in front of me and with me still appearing today I’ve proved it.” The chance to further his career came at Rangers. “I wasn’t prepared for Rangers. I went for a pint of milk in the first week and someone was asking for a photo! “You don’t appreciate the size of the place until you’ve been there. It’s the most fantastic club. “I was disappointed that I didn’t play more in the league but had a good cup run. “I played the Celtic game at Hampden which was brilliant but I also played Queen of the South at home on a Tuesday night. “We won 5-0 and there were 35,000 in the ground.” Wigan provided another chance for Championship football in January 2017. “I saved a penalty on my home debut. A good start but, unfortunately, we didn’t stay up. “A new manager came in and I was on the move again, to Scunthorpe under Graham Alexander. “I met Paddy Madden and Josh Morris there. Grezza’s a fantastic guy and a good coach. Looking back it was a strange decision by the club to get rid of him when they did. We were sixth in the league, never out of the play-offs. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Paul Musselwhite, their goalkeeping coach, is one of those on my journey who I have a special bond with.”

Despite being the first-choice goalkeeper in 2018-19, an opportunity arose at Lincoln City in January. “It is a fantastic club. I got a dozen games and promotion but didn’t get another offer, due to budget issues. “I was out of work. I had played with Joey Barton at Burnley and Rangers. “We were as daft as each other. I rang in the summer to congratulate him on his wedding. “He asked how Lincoln was, saying, ‘I thought you had twelve months left?’, I said: ‘I’m sat at home.’ and he replied with: ‘Get yourself in Monday.’ I did and here I am. “The manager has to make the decision and he put me in. I’m confident in my abilities. “I’ve been in Cairnsy’s position before, as have most keepers. “I could have been out of work but as a footballer I don’t want to stop. “You ask the coaches here and they would rather be playing. “I think I can play until I’m 40 if I keep myself fit. “The arrival of the sports science and medicine side over the last five or six years has probably helped keep my career going. “As long as I’m able and someone else sees that I am I want to keep going. “Goalkeeping coach, Dave Lucas, has invaluable knowledge and even at my age I can take new things on board.”

HELP RAISE AWARENESS FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY (TUESDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER)

20 NEW STUDENTS JOIN TRUST’S COMMUNITY COLLEGE!

Suicide Prevention Day, which takes place on Tuesday 10th September, is a day where people in the world raises awareness towards suicide prevention. This is a huge topic at the moment and each and every one of us can make a difference. In 2017, in the UK and Ireland alone, over 6,000 people died of suicide. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and we know that suicide is preventable, it’s not inevitable. The Trust work with a local CAMHS primary mental health service to raise awareness of suicide and support young people and adults that attend community programmes. If you feel you need additional support or somebody to talk to, please see the below contact numbers: Children (0-19) | National – Papyrus 0800 068 4141 / Local - CASHER 07810 696565 /// Adults | National - Samaritans 116 123 / Local – LCFT Mental Health Helpline 0800 915 4650

It is an exciting time to be part of Fleetwood Town’s Community College. 20 new students have joined our current 12 BTEC students, who will be jetting off to Spain for two weeks in September to take part in training, education, and fixtures against local opposition. Our BTEC students will be given opportunities to take part in coaching, officiating and also learn about different cultures which we feel will be beneficial to the group. The BTEC programme has some exciting opportunities available, including the trip to Spain. The programme is constantly growing in size and in quality, and it looks to be an exciting year ahead. If you are just starting Year 11 at school and are interested in representing Fleetwood Town whilst studying sport at college, please email joseph.newson@fleetwoodtownfc.com to find out more information about what we have to offer.
