ood afternoon and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for today’s Sky Bet League One match with Tranmere Rovers. I’d like to extend that welcome to Micky Mellon, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the journey to the Fylde Coast today. Micky is someone who I consider a friend and today is the first time we go up against each other in competitive football. I’m sure he is looking forward to returning to Highbury after what he achieved at this club by bringing the club into the EFL from non-league, and because of that he will welcomed back with open arms. I look forward to catching up with him

2

after the game, hopefully with the scoreline in our favour. Today is an important match for us due to not playing in the league for a couple of weeks, with two important cup matches in the horizon before the local derby with Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. Saying that, our focus is fully on today’s game and we are aware of the stern challenge that Tranmere pose. I watched their match last Sunday against Wycombe and there wasn’t much between the two sides, which they proved when they won in the FA Cup on Wednesday night. Our message is clear today, to start fast and play our normal game at home which has been very successful for this team.

Today’s atmosphere is set to be a cracker, and I’m sure our supporters will respond in the way they only know how – by being loud and proud. Keep up the great support! Enjoy the game,

MANGAN RELISHING COACHING

OPPORTUNITY

"WE HAD SUCH A LAUGH AND MUCKED IN WITH THE LADS WHO WERE ALREADY HERE LIKE JAMIE MILLIGAN, NATHAN POND AND SCOTTY DAVIES. WE WERE ALL BEST MATES COMING TO WORK, LOVING LIFE AND LEARNING FROM MICKY MELLON, CRAIG MADDEN AND STEVE MACAULEY."

WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

First team coach Andy Mangan on playing for Micky Mellon, and now working under Joey Barton as part of the coaching team at Fleetwood Town.

I

t is always a pleasure to sit and listen to Andy Mangan’s effervescent take on the game he has loved as a player and now as an aspiring coach at Fleetwood Town. Twenty minutes flew by at Poolfoot as Mangs talked enthusiastically about playing for both Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers, his tribute to Micky Mellon, who signed him four times at various clubs, and the challenges faced in his relatively new career on the coaching side. “Signing for Fleetwood in 2011 gave me some wonderful times. We are all still in touch. “There must have been ten Scousers in the team back then! We travelled in together, stopping for a coffee or a McDonalds on the way! “That was the way it was back then. We had such a laugh and mucked in with the lads who were already here like Jamie Milligan, Nathan Pond and Scotty Davies. “We were all best mates coming to work, loving life and learning from Micky, Craig Madden and Steve Macauley. “Lee Fowler was such a big signing. We had lost Anthony Barry through injury. Fowls was a talented player who perhaps could have applied himself a bit more. “As for Jamie Vardy, well, a sprinkling of magic dust was dropped on us when Vards arrived. “We enjoyed a fantastic partnership up front. He always played with fire in his belly. “We had some cracking performances against high level opposition such as Yeovil Town and Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup. “When Micky left I was devastated at the time. “I was injured so, obviously, I felt partly responsible. Under him, I think that we moved the Conference on.

44

“We showed that you didn’t need to kick yourself out of that league. “We played total football, spearheaded by Vardy but it wasn’t just about Vards and he will tell you that. The mentality was so strong, led from the top by Steve McNulty. “Macca was a brilliant skipper. He would push everyone’s buttons and make us all better. “He is still doing it now for York City. We finished on 103 points and I think that Wrexham ended on 98. “They pushed us all the way but it was tribute to our strong mentality that we kept going, knowing that Wrexham were likely to win each week and keep the pressure on.” Vardy’s goals will be remembered for many a year but arguably the most spectacular was Mangan’s own strike against Gateshead early in the title season. The distance of the shot seems to measure ever longer with age! “Groundsman Dale Frith measured it,” Mangan claims, “and it came to 38 yards. I told him why not round it up to 40?!” There is obvious fondness expressed as he thinks back to that 2011-12 season and Mangan feels that it is more than coincidence that many of the players have gone on to further success in other roles. “Anthony Barry’s working under Paul Cook at Wigan Athletic, Jamie McGuire’s made a name as player and coach at Mansfield Town, Peter Cavanagh’s coaching at Everton, Lee Fowler’s had success as a manager, while Steve McNulty, Scotty Davies and Pondy are still going strong as players. “Oh, and let’s not forget what Jamie Vardy has done…” The 33 year-old Liverpudlian made fifty-nine appearances for Tranmere in two spells over three years between 2015 and 2018,

“It is an absolutely fantastic club. I remember way back as a Blackpool scholar when the hardest games were always the Tranmere games. “They’ve always brought the kids through the system really well and the support they get is phenomenal. “I loved my time at Prenton Park and still have a brilliant relationship with the fans to this day, which I’m grateful for. “We got to Wembley twice in the Conference play-offs. In 2017 we played another of my old clubs, Forest Green. It didn’t work out that day. “I’ll never forget that. I missed a chance which I would have taken with a foot half a size bigger and we would have won 2-1! “I’d have been a hero for ever! We put that right against Boreham Wood twelve months later and my kids were there to watch. “I put my medal around their necks as we were walking down the steps and they saw me lift the trophy. “That was very special for me and my family, along with goals I’ve scored against big teams such as Leicester City and Chelsea when Shrewsbury played them in the EFL Cup in 2014. “No one can take those memories away from me. “Big clubs like Wrexham have struggled to get back into the EFL so for Micky to bring Tranmere up two leagues is an amazing feat. “When he came in, Gary Brabin had stopped the rot but it didn’t look likely that the team would go up two levels so quickly.” Moving on to coaching matters, Mangs talked excitedly about the debut of Cian Hayes, Fleetwood’s youngest-ever player, in the recent EFL Trophy game against Oldham Athletic.

‘When I first came back to the club as a coach I worked with the Under 16s and Cian was clearly a special talent. “In my very first game against Burnley here was this lad who could pass opposition as if they weren’t even there. “Although small in stature, Cian is really brave and I flagged him up with the manager as a future first team player. “Fast forward a year and he’s done really well for the Under 18s and had time with the Under 23’s. “I’m investing a lot of time and energy into my new career, driving many miles daily and planning sessions extensively to try and improve as a coach. “It’s great when I have a lad like Cian to enthuse over. It makes me really excited to come to work!” How does Mangs compare being a coach to being a player? “Nothing will ever replace the buzz of putting the ball in the back of the net but the next best thing is helping others with advice based on years of my own experience as a player and information I’m picking up in a fantastic learning environment at Poolfoot. “I didn’t realise how much time you have to put in on the coaching side and the game’s moving on so quickly. “There is so much detail these days which I never had available as a young player and I’m just

trying to get my head around it all. “It’s going in the right direction. I’m learning from guys who’ve played at the highest level and in internationals. “Although it’s 24/7 I’m finding that I still want more every day. There is still pressure to perform just as there was when I played but I’m loving it! “There’s so much positive energy around the place! “The gaffer is brilliant because he delegates responsibility so well. “He demands a lot in return but I think that our group put together a really good package for the lads. “I work with the strikers and love to be around them being a striker myself but my areas are now more diverse and that’s what I need to develop my coaching career. “I’m becoming more confident with computers. I’m gaining more understanding of what the analysts do. “I have a sort of mantra based on a saying. ”If you practise what you aren’t so good at for an hour a day, within a year that is a lot of time to improve.” “We had a brilliant presentation the other day about people who perform better under pressure, highlighting Manchester City’s David Silva in particular. “There’s so much to learn and appreciate and I’m soaking it up.”

Setbacks as a player are now proving to be a help as a coach. “I wasn’t the same after my first knee operation although I did get back into League One. “Then I had the same injury on the other knee! It snapped me in half really! “When your game is based on speed, those are difficult setbacks to overcome. “I had to change my game, get a bit stronger and study opposition teams in a lot more detail. “I thought about the best way to hurt them, how they set-up defensively, what type of goals they conceded in previous games and the strengths and weaknesses of the keepers. “I think that has helped me now as I take my first steps into coaching. “How we have progressed as a club since my playing days here. “Massive thanks go to the Chairman for that, developing the ground and Poolfoot. “I’m really grateful to him for giving me this opportunity to coach. I don’t want to let him down.” Before the business starts there’ll no doubt be fond greetings with old friends before the game. “Eight years I’ve spent with Micky and we are still friends to this day, as are our families. “Me, the gaffer and Andy Hodge (former fitness coach at Highbury, now Tranmere) still go for dinner from time to time. “We have been through some really good times but there’s been a few arguments along the way!”

After a brilliant start to the year from Fleetwood Town’s young stars, we caught up our Academy Manager Ciaran Donnelly and gathered his thoughts on how things are going from his perspective. “The academy is thriving at this moment in time. The pathway for players is evident and we are delighted to see young players being given opportunities. “There is no doubt that this is a talented group of players we have at Under 18 level this season and with the support mechanism in place for them, I am sure they will continue to thrive and this season can be a very successful one for the group. “Simon Wiles, our Under 18s coach, is doing an excellent job coaching them and it is great to see a number of them moving forwards into Stephen Crainey’s Development Squad and beyond. “It’s worth mentioning the great work going on at Under 23s level too with Stephen, as it is clear to see the progression of all the young players at the club is something to be really excited about. “We have also had great success with the Under 14s this season as they have had a fantastic run in the North West cup. “Unfortunately they were beaten in the semi-finals by Preston North End in

a close encounter, but it was a great experience for the players and I know their coaches Alex Taylor and Phil Clarkson are very encouraged with their development. “I want to touch on staffing as this operation doesn’t take place with just a few people, it’s a team effort. “Scott Macneill (Head of Recruitment) has made an excellent contribution with the number of players he has recruited over the last two years, and the progress made has a lot to do with the level of commitment that has gone into recruitment by Scott and his team of scouts. “Steve Macauley, our Senior Physiotherapist, has been an excellent source of experience for us all to tap into and I know Simon [Wiles] has valued his input into methods of developing players. “Finally, to our two analysists, Ryan Shorrock and Aidan Adamson. They contributed greatly with an innovative approach to performance analysis that the players have really bought into, and it has created a fantastic learning environment around the academy. “There not enough room in these notes to thank everyone, but their work doesn’t go unnoticed by myself, the other coaching staff and support staff!”

COMMUNITY TRUST HOST SUCCESSFUL EFL KIDS CUP TOURNAMENT AT POOLFOOT FARM!

FLEETWOOD’S COMMUNITY PULLS TOGETHER TO SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY!

Fleetwood Town Community Trust, alongside partners Wyre & Fylde School Sports hosted the annual EFL Kids Cup football tournament at Poolfoot Farm. On Friday morning, 30 teams entered the competition from a number of primary schools across the Fylde Coast to earn the right to represent Fleetwood Town Community Trust at the Regional Finals in Accrington. The day saw over 350 pupils, boys and girls take part, with Lytham Hall Park looking to regain their title for the second year running. The school had a tough task, but in the end managed to succeed and take home the trophy. In the Plate Final, Flakefleet Primary School – Britain’s Got Talent finalists – beat Carleton Green to take home the silverware, added to what has been an unbelievable year for the school inside and outside of the school grounds. The Trust would like to thank everyone who attended, as well as all the parents who took time away from work to show their support.

Fleetwood’s first ever International Men’s Day event saw hundreds gather to tackle the stigma of men’s mental health and show their support for men. Held at the Sea Cadet Base in Fleetwood, the event showcased the wide range of services on offer to the local community and encouraged discussions around the challenges men face. The event was sponsored by Fleetwood-based charity Men’s Shed, who offer peer support, help, advice and friendship, as well as a safe environment in which they can share their experiences. Fleetwood Town chairman Andy Pilley opened up the event, with local boxer Brian Rose discussing the highs and lows he’s faced throughout his boxing career, and also Flakefleet Primary School Headteacher Dave McPartlin, talking about the importance of reaching out and talking about mental health struggles.
