ood afternoon and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for today’s Sky Bet League One match with Gillingham. I’d like to extend that welcome to Steve Evans, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the long journey to the Fylde Coast today. Today’s game is the start of a really busy period for us, with trips to Rotherham United and Rochdale to come, before four home games in three different competitions, which ends 2019 and sees us into the New Year. Our home form throughout the calendar year has been outstanding, and we want to continue that today against a side who have been in good form in recent weeks, most

notable last weekend by beating Sunderland. I’d like to give a special mention in this week’s notes to Lewie Coyle, who last weekend made his 100th EFL appearance for the club. Everyone knows the type of character that Lewie is and for any player to play 100 games for a club – let alone in three loan spells – is a special achievement, so I’d like to personally congratulate him on that. He is an important player for us, who has put in some really consistent performances for us which has seen us start the season well. We also welcome to today’s match several grassroots teams, who will be in the Percy Ronson Stand for the game. The club do an incredible job within the community, and for us to welcome more
future Cod Army supporters is really important for us. We hope they have a great day and hopefully watch the team claim all three points. Thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the game,

MCALENY HOPING FOR SUSTAINED RUN IN TEAM
"i HAD SCORED AT DONCASTER THEN THREE DAYS LATER, I GOT MY ANKLE KNOCKED AGAINST WYCOMBE. IT HAD BEEN GOOD TO BE BACK WITH THE LADS AND PART OF THAT WAS DEVELOPING. I FELT FIT, WANTED TO PLAY AND CONTRIBUTE TO AN AMBITIOUS TEAM CHASING PROMOTION."
WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL
Forward Conor McAleny relished his time on-loan at Scottish side Kilmarnock last season and is feeling the benefits this year with Fleetwood.
S
ince I last chatted to Conor McAleny, the 27 year-old has journeyed north of the border to play in the Scottish Premier League with Kilmarnock. He was their first signing in the 2019 January window and for the forward from Liverpool the latest of a series of eight loan periods which have run through his career so far. After just six starts from fourteen EFL games for Fleetwood Town during the 201819 season it was important to get game time and he stayed for the remainder of the season, making thirteen appearances in all competitions. “The lads here were flying last January and playing really well. “I wasn’t getting games so going out on loan was a chance to keep playing regularly. “I know what it’s like to go out on loan. You have to adapt to your new environment. “I have learnt from each one and grown as a player through the different experiences I’ve been through.” On Conor’s arrival at Rugby Park, the oldest professional club in Scotland were lying third in the Scottish Premiership, level on points with Rangers and just three behind Celtic. “It all happened through my agent. Kilmarnock were playing pretty well in the Scottish Premier League under manager Steve Clarke and I saw it as a bit of a challenge. “They were a hard-working team who I’d watched a few times on television and I wanted to play my part. “Rather than twenty minutes here and there I was desperate to get regular match time. “If I could chip in with a few goals and assists, all the better.”

Conor’s SPL debut came on 6th February, at Dundee. The Wednesday evening match ended 2-2 and he instantly cemented his name with the Killie fans, much as he had at Highbury on debut against Rotherham United when he scored twice. Running on to a defence-splitting pass, he coolly finished the move with a sweet strike past the Dundee keeper from an angle.
"I KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO GO OUT ON LOAN. I HAVE LEARNT FROM EACH ONE AND GROWN AS A PLAYER THROUGH THE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES I'VE BEEN THROUGH." “It’s always nice to score on your debut. It got us back in the game after eighteen minutes. “It was a great dressing room at Kilmarnock and I settled in pretty quickly even though I didn’t know any of the players. “Normally on loan there are one or two familiar faces. “Kilmarnock is an old club with traditions. Any football fan who lives in the town will likely be a supporter.
“I stayed about fifteen to twenty minutes away from Glasgow.” Steve Clarke was carving a reputation at the time, following various managerial roles in England and prior to accepting his current position with Scotland’s national team. “Steve Clarke was a good manager. He was calm and collected and big on the tactics. “He got the best out of that squad then moved on to the Scottish job.” Three days after his debut, Rangers were the visitors in the Scottish FA Cup. It was a goalless draw. “They are a massive club and the lads were telling me how big the support is. “I’ve seen them on telly many times anyway and was aware of the size of the support. “They must have brought about eight of the twelve thousand at the match.” The Rangers game was followed by a league match at home to Celtic. The only goal came from Celtic legend Scott Brown. “Yes, he scored late in the game then got a second yellow for the celebration. “He’s good at what he does and an inspirational captain. “He came up with the goods when it was needed although I had an effort disallowed for handball.” The big occasions just kept on coming. The Rangers Scottish Cup replay was three days later, Kilmarnock losing 5-0 at Ibrox. Alfredo Morelos scored four times but Kilmarnock’s cause was not helped by the contentious sending-off of their goalkeeper, Daniel Bachmann, after twenty-five minutes, Getting a man sent off early killed the game. A tough challenge suddenly got a lot tougher.
Rangers manager, Steven Gerrard, was a hero of Conor’s growing up in Liverpool and is forging a reputation as a manager at one of the biggest and most demanding of clubs. “Rangers is definitely a tricky first job for Stevie but he’s doing well and pushing Celtic at the top of the table right now.” There was better fortune for Conor three weeks later when he scored in a one-all draw at Rangers. “I latched on to a through ball on the half hour and took it round the keeper. “We should have won that game. We missed a few chances, Rangers equalised and that’s how it stayed. You’d take that result at Ibrox, though.” Another goal quickly followed, in the very next game. It was a 5-0 defeat of Hamilton Academicals. “We played well against Hamilton. It was one of those days when everything went right. “Every shot you hit goes in and I scored, sweeping in a loose ball in front of goal.’ Conor’s last five games for Kilmarnock took in some of Scotland’s finest and historic clubs Hibernian (twice), Aberdeen, Celtic and Rangers. I asked him how the top teams in Scotland rate compared to English football. “The top six in Scotland are really good teams with big support. “With the possible exception of the big two, I
wouldn’t say they were Premier League standard, maybe the Championship. “The bottom six sides struggle more without the same sort of revenue.” And how would Conor sum up his period north of the border? “It was a good period in my career. I racked up some games and kept myself fit. It was better than sitting here although all credit to the lads. “They did well. The Scottish games took me into the summer break in good shape physically and mentally and I looked forward to the coming season.” There were starts in the first four EFL games before progress was halted by an injury against Wycombe Wanderers. “I had scored at Doncaster then three days later got the ankle knocked against Wycombe. “It had been good to be back with the lads and part of what was developing. “I felt fit, wanted to play and contribute to an ambitious team chasing promotion so it was a real blow.” It was two long months before his return to the side. “I got fifteen minutes against Coventry City, a few against MK Dons and a bit longer against Bolton Wanderers.”
Conor reached his half century of EFL games for Fleetwood against Bolton and followed with sixty-five minutes in the Emirates FA Cup Second Round against Barnet at The Hive Stadium. This was his first start for Fleetwood in nearly three months. “I felt alright at Barnet. It’ll take a while to get the sharpness back game by game. “I’ve not got many FA Cup memories as yet. Leicester City at home could have been one. We could have won that day, to be fair.” Conor also started the EFL Trophy game at Goodison Park against Everton Under 21s in late November. This gave him a chance to return to the club where his career path started - before signing for Fleetwood Town in June 2017. Despite Liverpool’s Michael Owen being his childhood hero, Conor was scouted by Everton, joining the Academy at the age of eleven. He worked his way up and made a Premier League home debut on that same Goodison Park pitch, against Norwich City, eight years earlier. There have been many varied experiences since then but he has clearly learned much from different clubs and now remains focused on finishing the season strongly with first team opportunities at Fleetwood Town.

Hello and welcome back to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match between Fleetwood Town and Gillingham. It was a great result last time out at home as The Cod Army beat Tranmere Rovers 2-1, with Josh Morris and Paddy Madden getting the goals on the day! A warm welcome to our sold-out Parkside Suite today, and both of our Match Sponsors - ADJ Fire & Security and Hesketh Press - who are here as well. I hope you enjoy your day with us at Highbury. We have a busy Christmas period at Highbury, with spaces in hospitality still available at our game against Bristol Rovers on 29 December and Sunderland on New Year’s Day! Get in touch soon to avoid disappointment.

TRUST REACH OUT TO OVER 100 ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES IN LOCAL AREA!
COMMUNITY TRUST TO HOLD EVENT FOR THE HOMELESS AT HIGHBURY!
Last week saw the EFL’s Day of Disabilities take place, with the aim of EFL and its clubs to come together and share some of the positive work that has been undertaken. The work done in the community ensures an inclusive environment for disabled supporters through participation and community activity, and improving the matchday experience. The Trust regularly engages with local SEN schools, Great Arley and Red Marsh, to help develop their children’s social skills through curriculum and extra-curricular activities, such as multi-sports, which can help build fundamental movement skills and increase confidence. As well as delivering sessions in local schools, we run a number of programmes aimed at adults and children with disabilities, such as adult and junior PAN ability football sessions, Multi-Stars.
Fleetwood Town Community Trust will be working in collaboration with BES Group and Mustard Seed and host an event for the isolated and homeless residents in Fleetwood. The event – which is taking place on Monday 23 December – will be held at Highbury Stadium, with all the Community Trust helping in the kitchen. The Trust have offered over 100 people across Fleetwood the opportunity to have a warm meal at the stadium, whilst giving those people the chance to feel welcomed and eats some turkey and pigs in blankets on the day. This partnership with Mustard Seed has developed over the last few months with the club offering to host a location for people to drop off food and drinks for them to share across the charity this Christmas. If you want to drop any tin cans at Poolfoot Farm or Highbury, please feel free. Your small donation will go a long way!
