G

ood afternoon and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for today’s Sky Bet League One match with Tranmere Rovers. I’d like to extend that welcome to Micky Mellon, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the journey to the Fylde Coast today. Micky is someone who I consider a friend and today is the first time we go up against each other in competitive football. I’m sure he is looking forward to returning to Highbury after what he achieved at this club by bringing the club into the EFL from non-league, and because of that he will welcomed back with open arms. I look forward to catching up with him

after the game, hopefully with the scoreline in our favour. Today is an important match for us due to not playing in the league for a couple of weeks, with two important cup matches in the horizon before the local derby with Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. Saying that, our focus is fully on today’s game and we are aware of the stern challenge that Tranmere pose. I watched their match last Sunday against Wycombe and there wasn’t much between the two sides, which they proved when they won in the FA Cup on Wednesday night. Our message is clear today, to start fast and play our normal game at home which has been very successful for this team.

Today’s atmosphere is set to be a cracker, and I’m sure our supporters will respond in the way they only know how – by being loud and proud. Keep up the great support! Enjoy the game,

HUNTER PLEASED WITH

RECENT ACCOLADE

"THE TWO GAMES I PLAYED IN THE FA CUP AGAINST LEICESTER CITY WERE A GREAT EXPERIENCE AGAINST PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYERS BUT I'M STILL GUTTED TO HAVE HIT THE POST IN THE LAST MINUTE OF THE TIE AT HIGHBURY!"

WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Ash Hunter says that Fleetwood must take each game as it comes and mustn’t get too ahead of themselves as they look to challenge for promotion.

A

sh Hunter’s appearance on the hour during the game at Bolton Wanderers in early November was, in itself, not an unusual scenario. We have been used to the 24 yearold making an impact off the bench for Fleetwood Town. On this occasion, though, he was to create a new record for EFL appearances by a Fleetwood Town player. It was an amazing record considering how close he came to packing the game up completely after rejections by a series of Midland clubs. Thanks to his supportive family, Ilkeston Town and the trained eyes of Stuart Murdoch’s wife, Ash was given another chance to follow his dream and he has not let any of them down. “‘Everything happens for a reason,’ was his response when I reminded him of the great back story. “Had Stuart Murdoch and his wife not been impressed by me in that trial game I’d have probably been in the stands at the City Ground now.” The record number of appearances had stood for over two years, the previous holder being David Ball, a person who Ash admires as a player and as a friend. “Bally’s a good player. He was someone I got on with really well, on and off the pitch. “I always knew where to find him and he was a big help to me in my early years at the club. “We would talk often and he would ring me. We are still good friends. “It was just a shame about his choice of hairstyles and colour! We got on to him about those. “He’s in New Zealand now, playing for Wellington. That will be a new challenge for him.

44

“It’s nice to hold the record. Hopefully, I can keep going and make many more appearances.” The debut game was at Highbury against Peterborough. That spectacular run down the right wing which left the Peterborough defender trailing seems many moons ago now! “Peterborough seems such a long time ago but it was a big deal at the time. A couple of weeks after playing in nonleague I was making my debut in League One. It’s all gone a bit fast.” Ash marked his fiftieth appearance, at home to Gillingham, with a goal. It was October 2016 and his tenth goal in the EFL. “I remember it well. It was a volley from a Conor McLaughlin cross. I struck it into the top corner.” Peterborough featured once again in his list of milestones, the opponents in his hundredth game, a home defeat by 3-2 in December 2017. Spotland was the scene for the 150th, a 1-1 draw at Rochdale back in January 2019. “Milestones are nice to reflect on and see how far you’ve come from game one. Hopefully I can rack up more games and score a few more goals.” Having worked under five managers at Fleetwood Town, I asked Ash to consider how far he has come since his arrival five years ago. “A long way, definitely! I’ve had quite a few managers and played in a lot of positions! “I’ve been up front, right midfield, left midfield, centre midfield, even left back! “During that time I’ve learnt a lot about how to play in different positions and feel that I can play anywhere, apart from centre half!”

Meaning that he would take a spell in goal?! “I wouldn’t rule that out! I sometimes go in goal in training when I’m messing about with the lads. “If the keeper came off and there wasn’t one on the bench I think Dave Lucas would expect me to jump in after seeing me in training.” I asked him how much freedom he gets on the pitch. “It depends. Sometimes there’s more structure needed in the set-up when I start games but sometimes I’ll come on when we are drawing or behind and I’ll be told to express myself and make things happen. “I get more of a free rein and I like it when that happens. I can go anywhere, get on the ball and provide an assist or score. “I like putting service into the box and having two out-and-out goalscorers in there in Paddy and Ched. “It’s a big help knowing that they are going to get on the end of any ball that I put in. “I’m learning stuff every day that I didn’t know and it makes me want to continue improving.” Ash has been nominated for the NorthWest Rising Star Award for the last two years, this time in a shortlist including Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and Manchester United forward, Mason Greenwood. I asked him how long he can be a rising star?! “Ha ha! I don’t know about that! I’m getting on a bit now. I’ve just turned twenty-four. “Wes Burns, who I was nominated with for League One Footballer of the Year, was 25 the other day. Seriously, it’s a nice feeling to get nominated alongside players from bigger clubs.”

Ash has provided double value across his time at Fleetwood, with quality assists and thirty-one EFL goals. This total puts him third in the all-time list behind Ball (41) and Paddy Madden (32). Which goals particularly stand out for him? “Off the top of my head there are two that stand out. I’d probably go with my header against Sheffield United at home in March 2016. “It was a cross from Victor Nirennold and I was about three yards out! “We drew the game 2-2 but only because they scored a penalty in added time. I’ve only scored one header since then! The other would be my goal against MK Dons in John Sheridan’s time. “I think it was his first game in charge. It was a week clearance which I picked outside the box before taking a touch then curling a shot past the keeper’s left inside the far post. It stands out as one of my better goals.” There have been some huge opponents along the way, including Premier League side Leicester City, but none will have been bigger in the mind of the man from the Midlands than the EFL Cup tie at the City Ground back in August. “Yes, that was a thrill. I used to go and watch Nottingham Forest as a young boy and as an eighteen year-old after I’d given up football.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t get a result but playing in front of my family and mates who had watched games there with me was a nice memory. “They were in the wrong side of the ground, mind you, supporting Forest! “The two games I played in the FA Cup against Leicester City were a great experience against Premier League players but I’m still gutted to have hit the post in the last minute of the tie at Highbury! Playing in the replay at the King Power on a really nice pitch is one of my best memories.” Young Cian Hayes made an immediate impact in the EFL Trophy match against Oldham Athletic. Did Ash see some of his own familiar swagger in the 16 year-old? “Yes, he’s certainly a good player, not afraid to try something unusual, like me. He did a little skill in the corner which I wouldn’t expect anyone to try so early! I think he’s also on my boots! Guys like Cian do join us from time to time and you can see their promise. “They do really, really well in training. There’s a lot of lads around Poolfoot who’ve got a really bright future ahead of them. They just need to put the hard work in day by day.” The first team squad has strength in depth. How confident are the players that they can achieve something special?

“We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves and just take it game by game and try to keep winning, then we will be up there come the end of the season. “We know that we now have to go to Portsmouth, Ipswich and Sunderland in midweek but we will prepare fully to take the three points. “Having the strength in depth is really helpful. If we are to go up it will be because of everybody, not just eleven lads.” Are you proud of what you have achieved? “Definitely! I thought I’d come up here, play for the Under 21s and be released after a year. I said that to my dad. “Every manager has been helpful to me and enjoyed watching me play. “I’ve also had massive help from Barry Nicholson whose always been supportive whether I’m playing or not. “I’m starting to get life off the pitch right. I feel really settled up here. I’m a summer golfer. “I got my handicap down to twelve, not in the same league as lads like Couttsy, Coyley and Baz, mind, who are playing off single figures. “Then there’s Kyle who should be a lot lower than he says! “My girlfriend and I go to the cinema and living locally now I get plenty of lie-ins before training!”

Fleetwood Town’s Under 18s coach Simon Wiles reflects on the last 12 months, which has seen many memorable moments for the staff, the players and the club. “I have to say it has been a very pleasing year for myself and the lads who have been with us last season, and those who are with us this campaign. “In football you can’t stand still, and over the summer it was time for me to reflect on how I had done in my first year of being with this group, and what I could implement for this season. “Personally I have been on courses, where I have recently completed my ‘Elite Coaching Apprenticeship Scheme’ and it does touch on football, but it was about developing myself and taking those skills into the working place at Poolfoot Farm. “I feel I have learnt a lot as a coach and a person with that course, as well as from the trips we’ve had across Europe to Ajax, Club Brugee and Lille. “The lads in at the moment have been superb from the first day of pre-season, and the environment we have created is one where both our staff and players can come in daily and be the best person they can be to help us with our end goals. “I know players will be disappointed

at times this season when not picked, but that togetherness we’ve built here comes through because they know if they are to be successful it will be a team effort and with games coming thick and fast, they will be needed and will do everything to help us succeed. “As I have said, the lads have bought into what we are trying to do, and the performances on the pitch have shown that with us making history and reaching the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup. “The match against Millwall is one we are all excited for! “We all went through the different types of emotions that night against Watford, and now we go down to The Den and yes we will enjoy ourselves, but we will also be doing what we do best to try and reach the Fifth Round. “That night at Highbury will be one I will look back at in my career, and I am sure it will be one the players will look back on later in life because they worked so hard prior to the match. “On the night they never let their heads drop, and they continued to work together even when it went down to penalty kicks. “It has been one to remember, but I know there’s still so much more to come!” Fleetwood v Burnley Fleetwood Town vTown Bristol Rovers

UNDER 18s VISIT BRIAN HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE AHEAD OF CHRISTMAS!

COMMUNITY TRUST HELP LOCALS MAINTAIN THEIR SPORTING MEMORIES AT POOLFOOT!

Ahead of a busy Christmas schedule for Simon Wiles’ side, the staff and the players spent an afternoon with those at the hospice, whilst getting involved in Christmas activities with the children on site. After a tour around the facilities, it gave the players time to reflect on themselves, whilst making the patients smile from the moment, they walked through the door to the moment they left. Ben Lavelle – the Academy’s Safeguarding Officer – was proud of how they dealt with the visit, especially the difficult circumstances that they were going through so close the Christmas. It was a touching experience, especially seeing all the work that is done at the hospice on a daily basis. It’s something the Under 18s will not forget. Find out about the great work done at Brian House, as well as how as you can support them at www.brianhouse.org.uk/.

Fleetwood Town Community Trust hold their ‘Sporting Memories’ every Wednesday afternoon between 1:30-2:30pm at Poolfoot Farm – the Cod Army’s training complex in Thornton. The fun, friendly and inclusive environment provides those over the age of 50 to share sporting memorabilia to help them prompt conversations and memories of when the activity took place. The project offers exit routes for participants to take part in other community projects such as walking football and Fit for the Future, and helps those who suffer with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Anybody over the age of 50 is more than welcome to join us at our next session at Poolfoot Farm. If you require any further information on the session, please email john.hartley@fleetwoodtownfc.com, or call the Trust on 01253 208442.
