ood afternoon and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for today’s Sky Bet League One match with Tranmere Rovers. I’d like to extend that welcome to Micky Mellon, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the journey to the Fylde Coast today. Micky is someone who I consider a friend and today is the first time we go up against each other in competitive football. I’m sure he is looking forward to returning to Highbury after what he achieved at this club by bringing the club into the EFL from non-league, and because of that he will welcomed back with open arms. I look forward to catching up with him

after the game, hopefully with the scoreline in our favour. Today is an important match for us due to not playing in the league for a couple of weeks, with two important cup matches in the horizon before the local derby with Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. Saying that, our focus is fully on today’s game and we are aware of the stern challenge that Tranmere pose. I watched their match last Sunday against Wycombe and there wasn’t much between the two sides, which they proved when they won in the FA Cup on Wednesday night. Our message is clear today, to start fast and play our normal game at home which has been very successful for this team.

Today’s atmosphere is set to be a cracker, and I’m sure our supporters will respond in the way they only know how – by being loud and proud. Keep up the great support! Enjoy the game,

CRELLIN CHERISHING

FIRST TEAM SPELL "I GREW UP WATCHING BLACKPOOL PLAY FLEETWOOD SO TO PLAY IN THE DERBY WAS UNBELIEVABLE. I WANT TO STAY IN THE FIRST TEAM, GET A RUN OF GAMES AND TRY TO BE NUMBER ONE MOVING FORWARD."

WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Young goalkeeper Billy Crellin is loving life playing for the first team, after getting his chance away at Barnet in the Emirates FA Cup.

I

t must feel as if Christmas has come early if you are Billy Crellin. With a new long-term contract secured and signed in October, the 19 year-old goalkeeper has celebrated with appearances for England Under 20s and debuts for Fleetwood Town in both the FA Cup and EFL, all in less than a fortnight. On 23rd November, Billy became just the seventh goalkeeper to represent the club in the EFL, ironically with Scott Davies, one of the other six, in the opposite goal for Tranmere Rovers. Both were born in Blackpool and grew up locally. It was a great day for the Crellin family and the club that has nurtured him. “I was absolutely buzzing with the Tranmere Rovers game. “It’s good to get your debut out of the way and for it to be at Highbury, at my hometown club, made it all the more special. I was over the moon. “I didn’t get told I’d be playing at first but I was in the team shape on the Thursday before the game. The next day the gaffer asked me if I felt that I was ready to play and wished me the best of luck. “It was an unbelievable feeling and I couldn’t wait to tell my parents. “They were at the game as they always are. They’ve been great support for me over the years and I know how proud they were.” It was a performance which earned Billy the Man of the Match award. “Obviously, the win’s the most important thing at the end of the day. “We knew it would be tough and that Tranmere would throw a lot into the box. “Dave Lucas (goalkeeping coach) and the gaffer talked to me about that.” Left back Danny Andrew came to the rescue when Billy left his line in the first half and failed to get to the ball.

44

“Coming off the line is something that I want to do rather than stay rooted to it. “Judgement’s obviously key but when you are a young kid you have to commit yourself in order to move higher and higher up the game. “Even when you make an error of judgement you should keep coming and be brave.” The FA Cup debut, Billy’s first senior start, came at Barnet in the First Round. “The gaffer pulled me to one side a week or so before the match, telling me that he was thinking about playing me against Barnet. “I had a good few days training and on the Friday he pulled Cairnsy and myself and told us the news. “Cairnsy was really good about it, as you would expect. He’s a top guy. “Barnet were the underdogs and always going to give it their all. “In the end we put on a professional performance and got the result. “It was a great honour to get my first shirt in the oldest and best football competition in the world. “I watched the games on the television growing up.” Following his debut for England Under 20’s in October, Billy earned a second cap in the 3-0 win over Iceland on 19th November. “My first game was against the Czech Republic. I played just forty-five minutes. Me and the other keeper shared it. “Against Iceland I was heading for a full game but there wasn’t much for me to do in the second half so they gave a few minutes to another keeper who hadn’t previously played.” Billy has kept his place in the England set-up since their World Cup win in 2017.

“I’m not really a nervous type of guy. If you get too negative that’s when mistakes can happen. “The biggest challenge with England is keeping the excitement under control. “When we are at St. George’s we are in and around the first team all the time, in the gym and on the training pitch. “The facilities are absolutely unbelievable. “England manager, Gareth Southgate, will come round and talk to you. “He likes everyone to be together so there is that connection with the top players. “I don’t really think about playing for the Under 21s and above. “If I get first team chances at Fleetwood Town, that will take priority but the club, England and myself will need to talk around the subject and see what is best for me. “It doesn’t matter that I’m not at a Premier League club. “It’s all about work-rate and performance. That is what defines you. “I perform on the pitch and have had match experience at club level which stands me in good stead.” Loan periods at FC United of Manchester and Chorley have provided important experience. Billy joined FC United in August 2018 on a youth loan and the Magpies in the National League last August, featuring nine times for Jamie Vermiglio’s side and keeping two clean sheets. “It was senior, adult football. It’s all about the three points as well whereas Under 23s and the other age groups lacks a bit of passion when there’s nothing to play for. “I had been used to mistakes producing a reaction of, ‘don’t worry you’ll be alright

next time’. Now I simply couldn’t afford to make a mistake. “That’s what I needed at the time to strengthen my mentality. Bonuses mattered. “There are guys looking to pay for their kids school trips or something for the house. “Playing with Chorley meant bigger crowds and more exposure for me. “I definitely feel that I’m where I need to be at the moment. “I have signed a contract for two and a half years. It was the right decision for me but now I’ve put it to the back of my mind so that I can concentrate on playing football. “I’m improving all the time thank to Dave Lucas, who is an unbelievable coach, and the support of the more experienced keepers at Fleetwood, Cairnsy and Matt Gilks. “They are both dead nice guys and so helpful to me.” I mentioned that when Gilks made his professional debut, Billy was but three months old. “That’s crazy!” was his reaction. “I can learn a lot from Gillo. He’s played in the Premier League and at the highest level. “That’s where everyone wants to play, don’t they? I’m in a very good place to push on and do that.

“Cairnsy’s played over a hundred and twenty games so there’s plenty of competition for the place. “They will push me all the way and that’s what I need to get better and better.” Billy has strong views on racism and has been working with local children as part of the Show Racism the Red Card initiative. “I really enjoyed working with the boys and girls. The main message to the kids was to speak to someone they trusted and not get involved in racial abuse. “If it is going to stop, they are the ones who can do something and know how to tackle it. “I did a little Q and A and one kid asked who was my hero. “When I was growing up I loved watching Joe Hart at Manchester City so when the gaffer gave me the last thirty minutes in pre-season against Burnley it was a real thrill for me with Joe being at the other end. “After the game I went to speak to him and he knew who I was. “In the morning I’d played for the Under 23s against Salford. “He said, ‘I heard you played well this morning’. All the things I hoped he would say, he did. He told me to keep going in the England set-up

and everything he talked about was spot on. It was a brilliant moment for me.” Two recent appearances will have had particular significance. At the end of November, Billy took his place in goal for Fleetwood against Everton Under 21s in the EFL Trophy. Playing at Goodison Park will have meant a lot to a young man whose family are Everton fans. Billy, himself, supported Everton growing up. Then came the Fylde coast derby game at Bloomfield Road. Blackpool games are the most important for many in the Cod Army faithful. Despite being in a losing side on the day, it was still a big occasion, “I grew up watching Blackpool play Fleetwood so to play in the derby was unbelievable.” Billy’s ambitions are clear and straightforward. “I want to stay in the first team, get a run of games and try to be number one next season.” I was impressed that a young player with the football world at his feet is not one for extravagant gestures. Despite having much to celebrate, his head is most definitely screwed on, there is a quiet determination and confidence which doesn’t border on arrogance. Fleetwood Town have a gem of a player and he is one of their own!
