GAFFER’S NOTES SPONSORED BY
G
ood evening and welcome to Highbury for tonight’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Coventry City. I’d like to extend that welcome to Mark Robins, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the midweek trip to Fleetwood. Since my last programme notes, we have been able to add to our squad by bringing in Glenn Whelan. To be honest I was a little surprised that we would be able to bring Glenn in, but it’s a testament to the club that we have been able to attract a player of his calibre, who is still featuring for his country, into our squad. I’m sure those who were at Bristol Rovers last weekend will agree that he had a solid debut, in a game which we were
2
unlucky to not come away with the points. I’m sure you’ll give Glenn a warm Highbury welcome this evening. The league table is still very tight as we come towards the end of January, but we know that we need to turn draws into victories and take the points that our performances deserve. If you can string a few wins together then you can really climb the table, and that is something that we’re wanting to do starting tonight against a tough Coventry side. I have a lot of respect for Mark and the job that he is doing at Coventry in difficult circumstances. They have a young side which are performing well, both in the league and the FA Cup. Like always and as we proved in the first half of the reverse
fixture earlier in the season - if we play to our top levels, then we back ourselves to come away with a positive result. The lads have recovered well from Saturday’s long trip and are ready to go. Enjoy tonight’s game,

EVANS LOVING LIFE
AT FLEETWOOD
WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL
Forward Ched Evans is currently on nine goals for the season, and will be looking to his tenth in tonight’s game against Coventry City.
L
ast time I chatted with Ched Evans was some sixteen months ago, soon after his arrival at Highbury on a seasonlong loan from Sheffield United. Many eyebrows might have been raised at the time, but there has been no doubt that the Welshman has answered critics emphatically. At the time of writing, there have been twenty-six goals in sixty-five games. Five EFL goals in his first six games soon got the Cod Army on his side. A highlight was the away game at Scunthorpe, when he scored twice in a 5-0 drubbing, Town’s biggest away win in the league. “I remember that match well,” Ched told me, “We put our chances away emphatically against Scunny. “I know that it’s what we are paid to do but it was nice to get a good performance like that away from home and for me to get a couple of goals early in my Fleetwood Town career.” His brace came within the first twenty minutes and he further emphasised his value to the side when he turned provider for Wes Burns to execute a cool finish. It wasn’t a flash in the pan on the road for Joey Barton’s men. High-flying Doncaster had the screw turned on them, “Although we won 4-0, Donny was a tough game. I think I had a bit of a shoulder injury there. “Again, it was one of those occasions when our chances were put away. We were three nil up at half time against a good side. “I remember getting brought down early by their keeper and converting the penalty to get us going. “It was nice to come here and get going with a few goals.
44
“I enjoyed myself from the off and that’s why I’ve signed again this year. “The facilities at Poolfoot are brilliant and everyone from the chairman down is pushing in the right direction.” Eighteen goals, seventeen in the EFL, from forty-one games represented a successful opening season. Inevitably, there was much directed his way from opposition fans. “I was expecting it, particularly as I’m a combative type of player anyway. “Fans are going to have a go wherever you play. You just have to get on with it. It’s all died a bit this season.” There was much speculation over the close season as to whether Town could attract one of their star names back into the fold. It happened, not fast enough for preseason and the early games but better late than never. Instead, Ched made his start on 24th August, at home to Accrington Stanley, and, not untypically, scored, again from the penalty spot, after coming on just after the hour. “It was a busy summer for me and I’m confident that I’ve made the right decision signing on a permanent contract. “It’s been a good start to this season. We are creating chances but it’s vital when you are on top to score the goals and the Bristol Rovers match at home during Christmas was a good example of a game where we couldn’t get over the line. We dominated, which was pleasing, but just couldn’t get that finishing touch. “Credit to Bristol, who defended well, but we had twenty-three shots, I think, and the goalie pulled off some good saves. “I leathered one against the crossbar off the head of one of their defender’s and,
of course, there was the disallowed goal which had initially been allowed to stand. “Still, you are going to get games like that over the course of a forty-two game season. “We are close to where we need to be and if we can carry on playing as we are we can achieve success and be in with a great chance of promotion in what is a very tight division. “Championship football would be brilliant for the town after all the teams have given to their fans in promotions over recent years. “When you watch from the side, you can see just how good we are.” Watching from the side is something that Ched has had to experience as he has caught up fitness and sharpness-wise. After only two appearances off the bench in the whole of the 2018-19 EFL season, there have been seven so far out of nineteen, at the time of writing. “Regaining match fitness was key and you only get there by playing games. “I just had to bide my time at the start of this season, when we were playing well, and after not being around at the start. I feel I’m getting there now, though. “I know that we can deliver goals from anywhere and, as a striker, that is a good position to be in. “Paddy has been on fire. We work together well. Ash’s assists, particularly last season, have delivered the ball on a plate. “He’s not been as effective this season but that happens in football. Lewie Coyle has really improved on his crossing in the last two months, after being quite horrendous! “Then there’s Wes (Burns) who is always going to be a threat with his pace.”
"I LOVE BEING AT THIS CLUB. THERE ARE SOME GREAT LADS IN THE DRESSING ROOM. THE FANS HAVE BEEN BRILLIANT WITH A LOT OF TRAVELLING SUPPORT MAKING NOISE." A further accolade has been experience of captaincy, again something which might have raised the odd eyebrow at the time, but there is no doubt that it brought out the best in Ched. “I’d never captained before so it was an honour and I enjoyed leading the lads out. “I know that we have other good leaders in the squad such as Paul Coutts and Ash Eastham and I was determined to do my best in the role.” Ched has completed fifty EFL appearances for Fleetwood, only exceeding that figure at Sheffield United. “I wasn’t aware of that but it is something that pleases me because a milestone like that is always testament to the player. “It means you are wanted by the club and that you are playing well. A lot of players bounce from club to club and have no stability.” His goal tally of twenty-four, at a rate of one every two and a half games, puts him fourth in Town’s current all-time EFL list. Is there one that particularly stands out in his mind? “The only goal in the home win against Charlton Athletic last February because of the controversy surrounding that week when there was talk about me going out on loan in the January window.
“I came back in on the Saturday and the best way to answer critics was to score in a win against Charlton. “Ash and Paddy set it up for me and I fired home from close range. “A couple of games earlier, in January, I remember tap-ins at the back post at Wimbledon. “They helped keep me warm on a cold night down in London and it is always good to win on the road after a long midweek journey.” Although not scoring in the derby win over Blackpool in October 2018, Ched acknowledges the importance of that first win over the rivals from down the coast. “That was a massive victory with the towns being so close together. “Bragging rights are important for fans in derbies. You can feel their energy even though you may not be from the area. “I remember some big occasions in Sheffield, home and away.” He must be pleased with the success of his old club, the Blades, now performing well in the Premier League. “They are doing really well. I watch them as much as I can and still have friends at the club.
“I played there with Couttsy who was a top player before getting injured.’ One of the most physical, determined and competitive players on the pitch is clearly calm and serene off it and I sensed that Ched Evans is currently in a good place. “I love being at this club. The fans have been brilliant with a lot of travelling support and making a noise. “We’d like to repay them a bit more on the road, with a few more points. “There are some great lads in the dressing room. “Me, Paddy, Couttsy and Danny play a lot of cards on coach journeys and I’m good mates with Wes Burns. “We talk in Welsh most of the time. It’s nice to chat about the lads without others knowing what you are saying!” As we parted, I was left with the impression that this club has worked for the forward and vice versa. This is a man with most of his career behind him but still sure that there is much more to come and he is adamant that he can achieve that at a higher level with Fleetwood Town.

Hello and welcome back to Highbury for tonight’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Coventry City. Let’s get behind Joey Barton and the lads tonight as they look to build on their draw against Bristol Rovers on Saturday! I would like to welcome Affinity Lancashire and Choice Meats, who are sponsoring our game against the Sky Blues. We hope you have a great night with us! We held a Fan Player Sponsor event last week at Poolfoot Farm and it was a huge success, with all the sponsors sitting down with their players and chatting, whilst eating lunch with them. We’ve also been busy behind the scenes here at Fleetwood, as we announced that Marksafety are going to continue to sponsor the Cod Army for the rest of the 2019/20 season. We are delighted to have them on board and hope to see you in the Parkside Suite soon!
CONTACT OUR COMMERCIAL MANAGER, JOE FLEETW0OD, BY EITHER RINGING 01253 775080 (OPTION 2) OR EMAILING JOE. FLEETWOOD@FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM

LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL ATTEND GIFTED AND TALENTED ACADEMY AT ROSSALL SCHOOL!
COMMUNITY TRUST HOST NCS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN AT FLEETWOOD HIGH SCHOOL!
Fleetwood Town Community Trust hosted their annual Gifted and Talented Academy at Rossall School, which saw 42 boys and girls from across Wyre attend the event. The day was delivered in partnership with Rossall and Lee Cadwallader from Wyre & Fylde School Sports Partnerships, and it allowed children to get out of the classroom for the day to test their skills in a variety of new activities. These sessions consisted of trampolining, indoor athletics and hockey in the morning, with swimming and golf in the afternoon, which the children all enjoyed! Community Trust would like to thank Rossall School for hosting and delivering on the day, as well as Lee for his co-ordination and delivery throughout the day.
Fleetwood Town Community Trust and Fleetwood Town came together on Thursday 23 January to spread awareness of the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Biggins was in attendance at the local school to take part in activities with the pupils - which ranged from Year 9 to Year 11. The event was to raise awareness of the upcoming NCS programme, which will see a group of students take part in a three week programme, consisting of a week away in North Wales, a residential week at University of Cumbria to work on key life skills such as cooking, self defense and much more. If you want to find out more about the upcoming programme, you can email john.hartley@fleetwoodtownfc.com today. You won’t want to miss out on the events!
