ood evening and welcome to Highbury for tonight’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Coventry City. I’d like to extend that welcome to Mark Robins, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the midweek trip to Fleetwood. Since my last programme notes, we have been able to add to our squad by bringing in Glenn Whelan. To be honest I was a little surprised that we would be able to bring Glenn in, but it’s a testament to the club that we have been able to attract a player of his calibre, who is still featuring for his country, into our squad. I’m sure those who were at Bristol Rovers last weekend will agree that he had a solid debut, in a game which we were

unlucky to not come away with the points. I’m sure you’ll give Glenn a warm Highbury welcome this evening. The league table is still very tight as we come towards the end of January, but we know that we need to turn draws into victories and take the points that our performances deserve. If you can string a few wins together then you can really climb the table, and that is something that we’re wanting to do starting tonight against a tough Coventry side. I have a lot of respect for Mark and the job that he is doing at Coventry in difficult circumstances. They have a young side which are performing well, both in the league and the FA Cup. Like always and as we proved in the first half of the reverse

fixture earlier in the season - if we play to our top levels, then we back ourselves to come away with a positive result. The lads have recovered well from Saturday’s long trip and are ready to go. Enjoy tonight’s game,

CRAINEY FEATURE GSTEPHEN AFFER’ S NOTES

CRAINEY DEVELOPING

FUTURE STARS

WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

"I'M VERY GRATEFUL TO FLEETWOOD TOWN FOR GIVING ME THE CHANCE. I WANT TO PASS MY EXPERIENCES ON. THE MOST REWARDING THING IS WHEN YOU IMPLEMENT SOMETHING AND IT'S REPLICATED ON THE PITCH."

Development Squad head coach and former defender Stephen Crainey sat down to speak about his role of nurturing the younger players at the club.

T

he single-minded determination that characterised a successful playing career is already making its mark in Stephen Crainey’s coaching. Before we chatted at Poolfoot he had refereed a training game in driving rain. As he admitted to me, he barely noticed it! It is an attitude forged on the streets and terraces of Glasgow, playing football with friends and family and watching his beloved Celtic. “I’m the youngest of six, with four older brothers, and had to graft for everything I got. Mum and Dad supported me every step of the way. “I was so self-driven and knew from a real young age that this would one day make me a professional footballer. “In kick-a-bouts I would be Paul McStay or John Collins, heroes I watched from the terraces. It was where I learned my basic skills and developed a competitive edge.” Stephen started organised football at Lenzie Youth Club. “I played for three or four years from ten. Scouts came and I trained with other clubs during the week. Celtic was the right choice for me.” The full back’s debut was at home to St. Johnstone in March 2000. He was eighteen. “I remember going home afterwards. My family and friends were all there and emotion got the better of me. Even talking about it now sends shivers up my spine. “Someone handed me a bottle of champagne. I sprayed it all over the kitchen, much to Mum’s annoyance! To join the club I supported, play in the first team and win a couple of medals was a dream come true. “I played in two Old Firm games, one at Celtic Park and one at Ibrox. The time just flashed by.

44

“You are that focused on not making a mistake. It’s only when the ball goes out of play that you can pick up the crowd. The passion and rivalry between the teams is intense. It set me on my way.” The 38 year-old left his home city for the first time in 2004, bound for the south coast and Premier League team Southampton. “I was playing intermittently at Celtic and needed to advance my career. Martin O’Neill phoned me. He told me that Gordon Strachan was interested in signing me. “The gaffer wanted me to stay but, with limited opportunities, I decided to move south and I’ve been in England ever since. It was a long way from my family but my ambition outweighed all. I had tunnel vision. “When you play for Celtic a lot of teams put players behind the ball. It was the same for Rangers. In the Premier League, the games were more open. My first game was at Arsenal, against Henry, Bergkamp and Reyes. It was a tough start but a great experience.” He moved south as a Scottish international, having made his debut against France in Paris in March 2002. “I’ve played against a lot of top attackers through my career but that game stands out. We lost 5-0 to the World and European champions who had the likes of Desailly, Henry and Trezeguet in their side. That’s before you even mention Zidane who must be one of the top two players I’ve faced. “It was a great honour to represent my country. I had been watched by the manager in the 1-1 derby at Ibrox. He picked me on that performance. Very quickly, I knew what the top level was like and that helped my career.”

A brief period at Southampton was followed by a spell at Leeds United. “I was their first signing after they got relegated from the Premier League. It was a mixed period for me, though. Leeds is a massive club with a huge fan base and reputation. “I played ten games and then developed groin problems. I never got to show the fans what I could truly do.” Stephen was released in 2007, embarking on a period which, for many, is the definitive part of his career. “I had been released in the summer and got the fittest I’ve ever been. I met Blackpool’s manager, Simon Grayson, at the Tickled Trout near Preston. It wasn’t quite last chance for me. “I was only twenty-six and I wasn’t for stopping now. In my first year at Blackpool I got the Player of the Year award and I saw it as reward for how hard I had worked the previous summer. “Simon was very good at the time but then Ian Holloway came in. I remember training at Myerscough College and we were doing certain patterns on the pitch. “He was telling us that we were going to get promoted and we were laughing because the club had seemingly accepted Championship football. But the jigsaw came together and we had a group of lads whose camaraderie and work-ethic were second to none. “Once we got the way Holloway wanted us to play, there was no stopping us. We drove each other in training, our standards were high.” Blackpool reached the Championship play-offs in 2010. Their opponents were Nottingham Forest. “We beat Forest 2-1 at home and there was a really good atmosphere at City

Ground for the second leg. Rob Earnshaw scored early but we reverted back to a mentality we had adopted if someone scored against us. We were capable of scoring more than the opposition. “We won 4-3 with a hat trick from DJ Campbell but our performance on the night merited more. “The final was against Cardiff City and we had to recover again from an early setback when Chopra scored. “I thought that we showed great character and the signs that we were a top, top team. I’ve played at Wembley four times and am really grateful for that. “We started the Premier League well up to January and then teams perhaps sussed us out. “I remember Old Trafford on that last day. We needed to win to have any chance of survival and went 2-1 up after just over an hour. “As United kicked off again you could just tell that we had made them angry and from then on we couldn’t compete. “We lost 4-2. It was devastating to be relegated but to then bounce back to the play-offs the following year showed real character.” After overcoming Birmingham City in the semifinal it was back to Wembley against West Ham United. The Hammers won 2-1.

“We should have beaten West Ham. They were on the ropes. Sometimes you don’t get your just rewards in football.” After over two hundred games for Blackpool, Stephen signed a one-year deal with Wigan Athletic in 2013 before brief periods at Fleetwood and AFC Fylde at the end of his playing career. “I really enjoyed Wigan under Uwe Rosler. There was a similar camaraderie to what I’d experienced at Blackpool. We got to the Championship playoff semi-finals, where we lost to Queens Park Rangers, and an FA Cup semi, losing to Arsenal on penalties. With a wee bit of luck I could have had a Cup winners medal.” Wembley is clearly high on the list of most impressive grounds. What are the others? “Well, I’ve been fortunate enough to play at wonderful places like the Stade de France and the Mestalla in Valencia but I’d have to go for Celtic Park, which will always be special to me. “From a very young age football was the driving force and now I’ve retired I’m keen to get involved in the coaching side. “I’m very grateful to Fleetwood Town for giving me the chance. I came in to the academy working with the Under 10s on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I wanted to cover the groundwork to see what it entailed.

“I had always been taught to deliver what I’ve been coached rather than tell others what to do. “It took me a while to get used to that but in my third season I’m getting used to it and now I’m in charge of the Under 23s. “The other coaches have been great, including the gaffer. “It’s a collective effort, everyone is brought into discussions. “I want to pass my experiences on. The most rewarding thing is when you implement something and it’s replicated on the pitch. “I’m very content with what I’m doing and my aim is to get one or two U23s into the first team! “Throughout my football career I’ve taken pride in what I’ve done in training as well as matches. You train the way you play. “Whatever it was I was focused on being the best in the passing drill, the best in the defensive drill, whatever the activity. “I can look back with pride and say that, with the odd exception, and I mean odd, my application was bang on. “That approach is exactly what I want to take into my coaching career. “In front of me are lads not only representing the club, themselves but also me and my philosophies and what I want to do going forward.”

Fleetwood Town’s Under 18s coach Simon Wiles reflects on how the Under 18s have done over the last month, in the Youth Alliance, Youth Alliance Cup, Lancashire Cup and the FA Youth Cup. The New Year saw us come back from the Christmas holidays with a huge game against Millwall in the FA Youth Cup Fourth Round. The boys had done fantastically well to reach this round and made history by beating Watford at Highbury in November. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the job done but what an achievement for us and the football club. The match started off well with Kian Makepeace scoring from the penalty spot after ten minutes. We had chances to extend our lead, with Barry Baggley hitting the crossbar, but we couldn’t get that all important second goal for our play. We’ve learnt some really valuable lessons since that game and we bounced back the following weekend with a great performance and win against Grimsby Town in the Youth Alliance Cup Quarter-Final. The lads have been superb since I took the job, and we’ve built this environment where player can express themselves which has seen certain player excel and

earn themselves a first professional contract. I am delighted for both Carl Johnson and Dylan Boyle as they are the perfect professionals since joining the club. I can speak for all in the Academy and say we are excited to watch them two develop. I want to finish off by talking about last weekend’s Youth Alliance fixture which was away at Preston North End. What a come back from the team. We found ourselves 2-0 down at half-time but they picked themselves up and scored early after the restart. We were outstanding and in the end managed to win 3-2 and put ourselves top of the Youth Alliance League - thanks to goals by Barry Baggley, Kian Makepeace and Jamie Cooke. I am writing these notes ahead of our trip to the Montgomery Waters Meadow to face Shrewsbury Town in the Semi-Final of the Youth Alliance Cup, which is another opportunity for the lads to play at a big ground, and hopefully reach a final so let’s hope we can get the job done. There is still a lot of work to be done this season and I know all the staff and also the players will keep striving and working hard on and off the field to reach our end goals. FLEETWOOD TOWN HOSTING DEDICATED MATCH DAY FOR MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY MIND!

SIGN UP TODAY FOR OUR UPCOMING NCS PROGRAMME!

The Cod Army are hosting a special charity match day at Highbury for the mental health charity Mind this afternoon against Doncaster Rovers. Mind is joining with Town for the fixture to help raise awareness among fans about mental health and the support the charity provides. Alongside this they hope to raise vital funds to tackle mental health problems. Mind’s own research shows that over half of people (56%) feel that football fans find it easier to show their emotions at football matches than at any other time. Despite this the charity also knows that many fans, particularly men, are likely to be struggling in silence for fear of opening up about their mental health. Help support Mind’s vital mental health services by texting FOOTBALL to 70660 to donate £3. For more information about Mind’s partnership with the EFL and wider work in football visit mind.org.uk/football

National Citizens Service (NCS) is a four phase programme split over three weeks for young people aged 16-17 years old (Years 11 & 12). The Trust want to raise awareness of the upcoming NCS programme, which will see a group of students take part in a three week programme, consisting of a week away in North Wales, a residential week at University of Cumbria to work on key life skills such as cooking, self defense and more. We are happy to announce dates for our programmes, with the first starting on Monday 13 July 2020, as well as one later in August on Monday 3 2020. If you would like to sign up today please speak to our NCS team located across Highbury stadium. If you want to find out more about the upcoming programme, you can email john.hartley@fleetwoodtownfc.com today. You won’t want to miss out, sign up today!
