GAFFER’S NOTES SPONSORED BY

G

ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture with Peterborough United. I’d like to extend that welcome to Darren Ferguson, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the journey to Fleetwood this afternoon. We have our fingers crossed that Storm Dennis stays away and we can all enjoy a game of football between two top sides in the division. Since my last programme notes, we have collected three straight victories against Doncaster, AFC Wimbledon and Wycombe. I spoke after Tuesday night’s win at Wycombe about my pride in this team and our young group of players

2

who have been first class, especially since the turn of the year. Each of the last three games have posed different challenges, and to see our players come through each one – mostly in difficult circumstances – has been brilliant to watch for me and the rest of the staff. A lot of things have happened since we faced today’s opponents Peterborough on the opening day of the season. They have had an excellent season so far and are comfortably the top scorers in the division, scoring 64 goals in 32 games, which makes our result at the start of the season even more impressive. They have multiple threats in attacking positions, but we know that if we can nullify them, we can hurt them at the other end,

as we showed at London Road this season. Our players are full of confidence after the last couple of weeks and are relishing the challenge. Enjoy the game,

GIBSON FEATURE GLEWIS AFFER’ S NOTES

GIBSON ENJOYING FINe

START AT TOWN WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

"IT'S NOT A BAD START, IS IT? IT'S BEEN A LOT DIFFERENT TO WHAT I'VE BEEN USED TO. I THOUGHT I WAS PHYSICAL UNTIL I CAME TO LEAGUE ONE! I'M REALLY ENJOYING THE ADDED PRESSURE OF LEAGUE FOOTBALL."

Defender Lewis Gibson has had a brilliant start to his time at Fleetwood Town, as the club have won all three games he’s played a part in.

W

ith just a few months left of his teenage years, Fleetwood Town’s Lewis Gibson stands on the cusp of a successful career as a professional footballer. If that proves to be the case, he will be grateful for the support of family, friends and a talented group of coaches. All have made their mark on an impressive young man. I caught up with Lewis after Fleetwood’s victory at AFC Wimbledon. It was a second successive win for him in senior football, following the home debut against Doncaster Rovers. “Yes, it’s not a bad start, is it!? It’s been a lot different to what I’ve been used to. “I thought I was physical until I came to League One! Another thing I’ve noticed is how I’ve had to head the ball a lot more. I’m already enjoying the added pressure of league football. “It’s not just about doing it for yourself but for your team mates and coaches, all of whom have responsibilities beyond the game.” Lewis’s accent betrays an upbringing in the north-east. He was brought up in Stanley, a former colliery town in County Durham, close to the famous Beamish Museum. “Stanley’s a small place. A lot of my friends and family are from that area and I enjoyed growing up there. “I remember going to Beamish on school trips! I can’t say that I loved school but mine was a good school, to be fair! “There were some great people there and they’ve helped us become the person I am today so I will always be grateful for that.” Like so many of his fellow professionals, Lewis had a ball at his feet from the start.

44

“I was kicking a football from an early age and had my heart set on being a professional. “Mam and Dad made the journeys with me so that I could get to places for training. “My grandparents were also around to help. I can’t ask for any more support from my family. “To be able to repay them match after match is kind of a massive, massive thing to do. “They’ve been brilliant, putting every last penny and every bit of energy into supporting my career. “They still come to games, especially my dad who’s everywhere around the country watching me. “He keeps all the tickets he gets from games and probably has over a hundred now. “He’s always watching stuff on the internet and listening to interviews. He’ll be keen on reading this one when it comes out!” The development of social media has helped to bring the players to the supporters and Lewis sees this as both a benefit and a potential hindrance. “It’s a massive part of the game now, giving a real insight into our lives. “Obviously, if my parents can’t make a game a quick look on Twitter or Facebook will give them a score instantly. “It works both ways though and you have to realise that everyone’s got an opinion and if form dips or mistakes are made you can be criticised. “You’ve got to accept that people will make their views felt, not take what you read to heart and try to avoid it. “My older brother, Liam, is also a footballer. He’s had setbacks with illness but hopefully it works out for him.

“We had some feisty games as kids, kicking lumps out of each other! “We both tried to do as much as we could to achieve our ambitions as footballers. “Back in the day I was a tricky winger and goalscorer. My hero at around nine or ten was Cristiano Ronaldo. ince then I’ve been pushed further and further back! “However, I enjoy defending. It’s my best position and where I want to be. “I was in and out of development centres at Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. “I kind of signed for Middlesbrough when I was under eight. I spent two years there but the distance was a bit too far for my parents. “Straight after school, I would leave the house around four o’clock and be back around half nine. It was an even longer day for Mam and Dad. “With my brother at Newcastle at the time, they would be travelling to places every night of the week. “I moved to Newcastle United, the club I supported. “I had a season ticket for about ten years before I left the area and all I ever dreamed about was playing for Newcastle at St James’ Park. “As I got older and new opportunities presented themselves I realised that it wasn’t going to be the place to make the next step to becoming a Premier League player.” With a number of big Premier League clubs showing interest, Lewis and his family opted for Everton, in the summer of 2017. “The thing that drew me more than anything else about Everton was the effort they put in to persuading me that they

wanted me at the club. Jamie Hoyland (a familiar face at Highbury) played a big part in persuading me to sign. Jamie’s a great guy. “He was a huge help to me and my family, particularly at a time when my brother wasn’t so well. We are still in touch and I’ll always be grateful to him.” Ironically, it was Everton legend, Dave Watson, who had played a big role in Lewis’s development at Newcastle. “Dave Watson didn’t actually have a part to play in getting me to Everton but he did a huge amount for me at Newcastle. “First and foremost, he was a fantastic person. You had that feeling that he wanted you to do well, no matter what. For me as a defender, he was a great coach to learn off. “I’ve been very fortunate to have had brilliant coaches for as long as I can remember and I’m grateful to all of them. “To have been in and around football from the age of six with such quality coaching has been a big thing for me.” The move to Everton was a first chance to live away from home. How easy was the change of circumstances? “It was made easier by some wonderful house parents who I stayed with on Merseyside for a year.

“Henry and Sandra were brilliant in helping me settle. “I was there on my own and they kind of made their home my home. “I couldn’t have asked for more. They had a son who I got on with and we still meet up.” At Goodison Park Lewis came under the influence of another Everton defensive legend, David Unsworth, and was playing for, and captaining, the Under 23’s at the age of seventeen,. “Unsy is a great coach and guy. Him and his coaching staff put a massive trust in me and my ability. “They realised that I was a leader and gave me the honour of being captain. “Playing regular football for the Under 23’s helped me in all ways, especially physically.” Lewis’s progress was noted at first team level and manager Marco Silva brought him into preseason training last July. “To get some matches under my belt at first team level was pretty special. “I think I had one of the most number of minutes on the pitch. “In the last game I played I scored against German club, Mainz, in a pre-season tournament.” With a new two-and-a-half year contract secured, the next stage of the defender’s development was a period of loan football.

“The level of interest shown by Fleetwood Town before I came here was similar to that shown by Everton when I left Newcastle. “Fleetwood rang contacts around me a few times every day to try and get me on board as soon as possible. “Before I came here I was told how good the group was and the staff. “I haven’t been disappointed in that. Everyone’s been amazing. The lads at Fleetwood have been great so far in helping me to settle in.” No doubt there would have been some contact with Fleetwood keeper Billy Crellin. The two shared a room during England Under 17’s World Cup win in India three years ago. “Playing for England has been a huge honour. The Under 17’s was my first call up and I’ve played quite a few games since then. I don’t know how many to be exact but my dad will no doubt know!” One fixture etched on the nineteen year old’s mind is at Sunderland later this month, a particular attraction for a fan of their bitterest rivals! “That’ll be great! It’ll be a massive occasion for me and the team as well. I can’t wait and I’ll have a few requests for tickets no doubt!” I’ve only had one conversation with this young man but he has made an instant impression. He has all the attributes needed to achieve his ambitions and dreams.

COMMUNITY TRUST RUNNING HALF-TERM SPORTS CAMPS!

THE TRUST’S EDUCATION PROGRAMME PRODUCING OUTSTANDING WORK!

The Trust are once against running three sports camps throughout the February half-term (Monday 17th–21st February), and it’s one that you don’t want to miss. The camps will be held at Carleton Green Primary School, Shakespeare Primary School and Poolfoot Farm – Fleetwood Town’s training complex in Thornton. It’s just £10 per day for children at wanting to go Poolfoot Farm and Shakespeare, whilst it’s £12.50 for the day at Carleton Green – if you book for the whole week, you will receive a £5 discount! With plenty of sporting activities to take part in at the two primary school venues, and lots of football to be played at Poolfoot Farm, we can promise it will be a week you wont forget! Feel free to call the Trust on 01253 208442 for further details.

The BTEC Education programme is nearly halfway through their academic year and the students have completed a tour to Spain, enjoyed a cup run playing the likes of Derby County and Sheffield United and have also producing some outstanding work within their assignments. With our second year students, there is still so much to look forward to. In the next few weeks, they will be going out on work placements, which will give the students the opportunity to work in their chosen field. The first years will be supporting the local secondary schools cricket tournament in the upcoming weeks. This will give those more opportunities to learn more out of the classroom environment. If you are just starting Year 11 at school and are interested in studying sport at college, please email education@fleetwoodtownfc.com to find out more information.
