ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture with Portsmouth. I’d like to extend that welcome to Kenny Jackett, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the long journey to Fleetwood this afternoon. I wish you all a safe journey home from Highbury following the match. We come into today’s game on the back of our fourth straight victory, following last Saturday’s terrific 2-1 victory over Peterborough United here at Highbury. I spoke to the players before the game and said that the match would be a real test of our culture and principles, and as the match played
2
out, it was evident how strong these both are within our dressing room. I’m so proud to work with this group of players and seeing the development that each one of them is going through, as we continue to strive towards our goals. I think for the first time in a long time, the supporters are now believing in the players and if we are to be successful, we need every person in Fleetwood to give the lads the support they deserve, because if they do they’ll be some incredible days ahead. I thought the fans were superb last Saturday and we look forward to creating an intimidating atmosphere today. To keep our run going, we know that it will tough against one of the powerhouses in our league in Portsmouth. Like ourselves, they are on
a good run and will no doubt be one of the teams who will be in and around the top six come the end of the season. They will know how good our home record is, having only lost once here all season. We don’t intent to add any more defeats to that record. Enjoy today’s game,

SAUNDERS FEATURE GHARVEY AFFER’ S NOTES
HARVEY FEATURE GAFSAUNDERS F ER’S NO T ES
SAUNDERS ENJOYING OPPORTUNITY AT TOWN WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL
Harvey Saunders has been involved in recent wins against Doncaster and Wycombe, and is looking to build on those experiences in the future.
A
s he dreamed of becoming a footballer, it is fair to say that Fleetwood’s Harvey Saunders wouldn’t have expected an Indian restaurant to have played a crucial part in literally getting the ball rolling. Born in July 1997, Harvey grew up in Staindrop, a village to the east of Barnard Castle. As befits a rural area, there were limited opportunities to play the sport. “My dad was always there to encourage me. “He supported Newcastle United and from an early age I was taught that they were the team to follow. “Alan Shearer was my hero. We all loved Shearer! “My family have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams and been there to support me.” Harvey started at the Barnard Castle club at an early age. “I was six or seven. Unfortunately, the club folded when I was thirteen because there weren’t enough kids around! “It was nearly all farmland where we lived! “There were school matches occasionally and I think I played for the district a few times. “I always looked forward to sports days at school with being a quick runner.” When the football club ceased to exist, Harvey turned to rugby. “I was always up for any kind of sport. Barnard Castle is quite a closely-knit town and I’d get a text or a phone call on a Saturday night asking me to go and play on the Sunday. I’d just pick my stuff up and join them. “I quite enjoyed it, actually, and played lots of different positions until I started
44
breaking too many bones and decided to pack it in!” At this point, the Indian restaurant enters the story. Harvey took a job at Spice Island in the centre of Barnard Castle. “Dad knew them and he wanted me to get some work experience so it was my first job. I’d work there at weekends. “They used to have a knockaround on a Sunday when it was shut and they invited me down.
"IT WAS A REAL SHOCK TO MOVE INTO MEN'S FOOTBALL BUT I WAS OVER THE MOON TO JOIN DARLINGTON RA HAVING THOUGHT MY CAREER WAS OVER" “Some of the young ones entered a little tournament and asked me to join in. “I thought, “Why not?” We won the competition and I was asked to go and play for a Sunday League team in Darlington. “From there I was soon playing for Darlington Railway Athletic. “It was a real shock to move into men’s football but I was over the moon to join RA having thought my career was over. “They were a really good bunch of lads but rough!
“I was a skinny seventeen year-old and got a few kicks in training but they always had your back on the pitch. I thought I’d made it because I didn’t have to pay subs!” Harvey qualified to play for the Darlington RA Under 18s for the last part of the season. “That’s where I started but pretty much straight away the first team got me into training and I played for them in Northern League Division Two. “It was a very physical league, particularly when you went from not really playing to a bit of Under 18s. It was a shock but definitely worth it. I loved every minute of it. “Dad and I are so happy that I’ve gone through it the way I have rather than academy football all your life into man’s football.” There were brief moves to both Bishop Auckland and Durham City. “Bishop Auckland were a league above but closer to home. “It didn’t work out for me but I did play a friendly against Darlington where I must have done well because, after a friendly for Durham City against Darlington, the Darlo manager, Martin Gray, came in for me. “It was a dream come true to go to a local club with such a history. “From not playing regular football everything was suddenly going so fast. “Martin was very black and white and it was a good learning experience underneath him. He wanted to win.” The twenty-two year old made his debut for Darlington in National League North in January 2017. His first goal came against Worcester City in March. “Tommy Wright took over as manager in the following October and he was more one-on-one with me.
"PLAYING AND TRAINING ALONGSIDE THE LIKES OF CHED AND PADDY HS BEEN GREAT. THEY ARE TOP STRIKERS, SPOT ON AND WILL ALWAYS HELP WITH ADVISE." “He was a great coach to have and played a big part for me. I got more game time.” Whilst at Darlington there were loan spells for Ryhope Colliery Welfare and Dunston UTS. “That was another good experience for me. “It was more like the Darlington RA days where the lads were fully in support but always prepared to give a good kick in training!” Harvey returned to Darlington from the Ryhope spell with a broken collar bone. “I was put through and one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The defender clipped me and I fell on to the keeper. “It was a bit of a weird one, to be honest. I just tried to get up and realised that something wasn’t right. I looked down and there was a massive bone sticking out! “Despite that, I was training again after five or six weeks. “Then it was off to Dunston to get some more game time.” The move to Fleetwood Town, on a two-and-a half year contract, came in January 2019. Harvey was the latest in a trend of signing players from non-league, previous examples including Jamie Vardy and Harrison Biggins. “I didn’t know much about what was happening regarding the move.
“I’d literally just left my job in a café and had decided to go to the gym during the day and train with Darlington two nights a week. “I got a phone call off Tommy saying that Fleetwood had come in. It was a massive shock and one that I never expected. “I was enjoying my football at Darlington and just never expected interest from someone bigger, never mind a League One club. “Never once did I think I would be training in professional football, to be absolutely honest with you.” Harvey initially finished the season on loan with Darlington despite training with Fleetwood during the day. Opportunities for game time started to appear as the new season started, beginning with the EFL Trophy at Accrington in September 2019. He replaced Ched Evans after 74 minutes. “It was a good game to watch, particularly from on the bench. “There were a few tackles flying in! I was over the moon to get my debut for Fleetwood so soon. “To begin with I was mainly with the Development Squad with the occasional call up to the first team training, which was great. “All the coaches have been really supportive. Stephen Crainey’s been a big help in the
Development Squad and Andy Mangan in his role as attacking coach. “Playing and training alongside the likes of Ched and Paddy has been great. “They are top strikers, spot on and will always help with advice.” Harvey’s League One debut was at home to Gillingham on 14th December. Once again, he replaced Evans, this time for the last few minutes. “Dad was there, as always! You have to tell him not to go to some away games. “I remember Crawley in the FA Cup. I don’t think he realised how far it was!” There have been two starts in the EFL Trophy, three further opportunities in the League and an FA Cup debut against Portsmouth. The EFL match at Wycombe so nearly produced a debut goal. “Yes, I can’t believe it! I was just waiting for it to drop but it wouldn’t come down. I was thinking, ‘No! No way!’” Harvey’s pace and impact have started to earn him admirers around Highbury and Poolfoot and he is savouring the opportunity. Meanwhile, the restaurant is still going strong in the Market Place at Barnard Castle! Who knows, one day there might even be an England shirt on the wall, from a grateful former employee!

COMMUNITY TRUST’S SPORTS CAMPS A SUCCESS IN FEBRUARY HALF-TERM!
PUPILS FROM CHAUCER PRIMARY SCHOOL ENJOY DAY AT FLEETWOOD TOWN!
Fleetwood Town Community Trust once again opened its doors for young children (5-12-years-old) to attend the popular Sports Camps. With fantastic numbers at Shakespeare and Carleton Green Primary School, and at Poolfoot Farm throughout the week, it was one to remember for all who attended the camps, despite the wind and rain! Those on the camps got to take part in a number of activities such as dodgeball, bench ball and of course football, whilst also getting a surprise visit from a number of Fleetwood Town’s first team players. Thursday saw the players attend all three venues, and get involved in the activity and signed autographs before the question and answer session. The Trust would like to thanks both Shakespeare Primary School and Carleton Green for allowing us once again to use their facilities for the sports camps.
A number of pupils from Chaucer Primary School in Fleetwood attended last Saturday’s match at Highbury as part of their Joy of Moving programme. Joy of Moving – a health and wellbeing programme delivered to Primary Schools pupils across Wyre – looks to educate children on leading a healthier and more active lifestyle, and with the Trust in 30 classes. Saturday saw the local school, Chaucer take part in multi-sports at Poolfoot Farm before making their way to Highbury, where they enjoyed a tour around the stadium, whilst getting to watch the warmups pitch side. They even got a picture with Town’s goalkeeper, Alex Cairns! Chaucer had received the special day out due to their work in and outside the classroom, and it was a pleasure to have them attend the match. If interested in the programme at your school, contact rob.larcombe@ fleetwoodtownfc.com for more details.
