Good afternoon and welcome to our fi nal game of the league season as we welcome Steve Davis and his Crewe Alexandra side to Highbury Stadium. As a group there’s no doubt that we didn’t do ourselves justice at Walsall on Monday and we were all hurting from that this week.
We have a responsibility as a management team and as players to put a type of performance in that excites our supporters, but we also need them during this diffi cult period.
We’ve always been a competitive team and the games have always been very tight since I’ve been here, be that win, lose or draw.
Crewe’s result against Doncaster last weekend is a clear indication that they haven’t switched off at all since being relegated.
We felt we didn’t do ourselves justice so it’s taken several days to get over that disappointment, but we have one fi nal chance to put this to bed.
I watched their game and they worked exceptionally hard. They’ve got a lot of young players in their team who are playing without fear.
What I would say is that there’s a little bit of a grey cloud hanging over the Club just now, so I would ask our supporters to create a positive atmosphere today.
They’ve got an energy about them now which is credit to Steve as he’s managed to keep them very focused. It’ll be a really diffi cult game. When I fi rst came here my fi rst remit was to keep us in this division this year and help to develop us as a Club. The fi rst step is today and if we do that then we can build for the future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Club’s fans for their fantastic support throughout the season. It has been greatly appreciated.

The Railwaymen have already been consigned to relegation to the fourth-tier of the English league system, but signed off their term in front of their own supporters in style with a 3-1 win against Doncaster Rovers at Gresty Road last weekend.
In 1987, Davis made the decision to swap Cheshire for East Lancashire, as he penned a deal to sign for Burnley.
Davis spent fi ve-years at Nantwich, leading them to two promotions and an FA Vase triumph, with his success at the non-league side attracting the interest of Crewe Alexandra in 2009, where he became assistant manager to fi rstly Gudjon Thordarson and then Dario Gradi.
Despite going behind just shy of the half hour mark from Tommy Rowe’s effort, Crewe roared back courtesy of Callum Ainley’s strike before the interval. In the second half, the Cheshire outfi t made the
three-points safe through goals from Marcus Haber and Brad Inman. Born in Birmingham in July 1965, current manager Steve Davis started out his career as an apprentice with Stoke City, but never made an appearance at the Victoria Ground.

A prolonged stay at Turf Moor followed, with Davis subsequently turning out 147 times in the colours of the Clarets, managing to get on the score-sheet 11 times in total. Davis moved over the Pennines after his four-years had come to a conclusion, as Barnsley became the next club on his list. He played 107 games at Oakwell, before having spells at York City, Oxford United, Macclesfi eld Town, Northwich Victoria and Nantwich Town. Crewe’s lead didn’t last long however, as David Ball latched on to a pass and fi red an exquisite strike into the top corner.
Fleetwood Town picked up a point against the Railwaymen at Gresty Road earlier in the season.
The Cod Army created a number of chances in the second half as both Ball and Eggert Jonsson went close, with the latter hitting the bar.
Ryan Lowe had given the hosts the lead in Cheshire as he fi red low into the far corner after just fi ve minutes.

Communitytrust Fleetwood Town Football Club will be supporting the Know the Score campaign at today’s game against Crewe Alexandra. Know the Score, supported by the Professional Footballers’ Association and League Managers Association, aims to raise awareness of bowel cancer signs and symptoms. Bowel cancer is the UK’s fourth most common cancer, with 41,000 new cases each year. It’s also the second biggest cause of cancer death. Every 90 minutes three people die of the disease. That’s 44 people each day - the equivalent to four football teams - but it needn’t be that way. - If you’ve had bleeding from your bottom, blood in your poo or suffered a persistent change in bowel habit that has lasted three weeks or more, especially if you’ve been going to the toilet more often or experiencing unexplained looser stools, tell your doctor.
bowel cancer is an old person’s illness – in fact it affects men and women of any age. Director of Community, Matt Hilton, said: “Bowel cancer can affect anyone at any age so it’s really important everyone is aware of the symptoms as early as possible. “We’re supporting Know the Score because it’s great that football is coming together to raise awareness of the disease during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.” Throughout football ‘Star of Hope’ badges are being worn during the campaign, which is also supported by the Men’s Health
- You’re not wasting anyone’s time by getting it checked out. If it’s not serious, your mind will be eased, but if it is bowel cancer, we know that when it’s diagnosed at the earliest stage, more than 9 in 10 people will survive their disease for fi ve years or more, compared with less than 1 in 10 people when diagnosed at the latest stage.

NATHAN POND BREAKS CLUB’S ALL TIME APPEARANCERECORD Club captain Nathan Pond broke Fleetwood Town’s all time appearance record against Walsall at the Banks’s Stadium last Monday afternoon. Pond surpassed Jack Ainscough’s remarkable total of 421 games for the Cod Army, but couldn’t prevent defeat in the West Midlands as Town lost 3-1. The centre half is now focused on today’s crucial fi xtute, and knows that the players will have to be aggressive in their play to beat the Railwaymen. He said: “Personally it was a very proud moment for me at Walsall on Monday but it
would have been a better moment had we have got a result there.
“It’s a good achievement to break the record but staying in the league with this team is a bigger achievement for me. I’d be prouder of that.
“Crewe have been professional in the way they’ve gone about their business since going down. They beat Doncaster last week and will want to beat us too.
“I didn’t really celebrate the moment too much because we’ve got business to take care of, so hopefully we’ll do that on Sunday afternoon.
“I’ve said this a few times over the past couple of seasons but I really enjoyed going to Portsmouth. It was the fi rst real big crowd I’d played in front of.
“They’ll probably play with more freedom than what they have done this season so it will always makes for a dangerous game.”
“There’s plenty of memorable games I’ve played in over the years, and I’m hoping Sunday will be one of them because we need to keep Fleetwood Town in League One.
“I’d played in front of about 6,000 or so at places like Luton but winning at somewhere like Portsmouth in front of 18,000 was special.” He admits the Alex will be dangerous opposition when they travel to the Fylde Coast, but insists Town must be positive. “The lads have got to stay positive. We know we let ourselves, the Club and its staff down on Monday and we have to put that right. “We’ve got another chance to do that but it’s our last chance. If we are positive and aggressive in our play then hopefully we will get the job done.

nicholson: a productive campaign for the developmentsquad Development squad manager Barry Nicholson feels this campaign has been another productive one for his talented group. The youngsters have picked up a number of impressive results against the likes of Burnley, Tranmere Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Nicholson has been pleased with the progression shown from his players, and hopes they can push themselves into the fi rst team plans. Refl ecting on the season, he said: “I think it’s been another really good season for the development squad. It’s been another productive one as we’ve managed to push boys towards the fi rst team. “Obviously with the position the fi rst team are in at this present time it’s been a little
bit diffi cult to probably throw a few of the younger ones in. “If we were safe the fans would have seen another batch of young one play, and the manager would have probably given a few more boys a chance. “It’s really diffi cult when you’re scrapping for results and are down towards the bottom end of the table. Every bit of experience counts. “They’ve been a great group to work with
and we’ve pushed on from last season. The players who we brought through from last year have progressed. “They’ve all become better players and they defi nitely look fi tter and stronger. Hopefully they’ve also become better people as well. “It’s not just on the pitch we’re trying to develop them but it’s off it too as we aim to make proper people out of them. They’ve been a pleasure to work with.” The Scotsman has also been heavily involved with Steven Pressley’s fi rst team since the former Coventry manager took over, and has relished every moment. “It’s been quite tough really juggling between my duties with the development squad and the fi rst team. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it though. “I’m still a young coach who is learning about the way I want to play and how I want my teams to do things, so picking up any type of information is vital for me.” Print Partner
