Good afternoon to all supporters and a warm welcome to Highbury for today’s highly anticipated local derby against our neighbours Blackpool. First of all my message to our supporters today is to get right behind the team. We want to create an environment and an atmosphere that can intimidate the opposition. The supporters have remained very much behind the team this year and we need one more push which I’d ask them to give us today. There’s no hiding the magnitude of the game as it’s a massive one for both sides. It’ll have a significant influence on who remains in the league come the last game of the season. We have to go out there and apply our game plan and win the game though, it’s as simple as that. There’ll be no hiding place for anyone on the pitch.

It’s a game where both teams must win for the same reasons, so it’s a very significant game and one I’m looking forward to. Neil McDonald has done a good job at Blackpool because people must remember that he inherited virtually no players at the start of the season. He’s had to build a group from scratch which is never easy and then during that period you have to then mould them and shape them into a team. He’s managed to keep a good spirit about them and has kept them in the race to remain in the division which is difficult considering the circumstances. I must end though by saying that I can’t wait to witness the great atmosphere that will be inside Highbury today. It’s a game where we want to take a big step towards survival. I hope you all enjoy it,

Steven

IntroducingBLACKPOOL Highbury Stadium stages its first ever Football League meeting between Fleetwood Town and Blackpool this afternoon, when the Tangerines make the short journey up the Fylde Coast to the home of the Cod Army. Pool currently occupy the final relegation place heading into the final few weeks of the League One season, after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to the hands of Rochdale at Spotland. Ashley Eastham gave Keith Hill’s side the lead on the stroke of half-time, prior to Joe Bunney and Nathanial Mendez-Laing completing the scoring for Dale in Greater Manchester, leaving Neil McDonald’s side two points adrift of safety. McDonald took on the managerial role at Bloomfield Road last summer, replacing Lee Clark at the Seasiders.

Did you know? Blackpool’s record transfer fee received was for Charlie Adam when he joined Liverpool in 2011.

As a player, McDonald learned his trade at Wallsend Boys Club, before moving onto Carlisle United and Newcastle United, penning a deal as an apprentice with the latter. After signing professional terms with Newcastle in 1983, the right-back made over 200 league and cup appearances at the Magpies. He made the move to Everton in 1988 for £525,000, spending a further two-years at Goodison Park, where he represented the Toffees in the FA Cup Final a year later. Later in his playing career, McDonald was on the books of Oldham Athletic, Bolton Wanderers, where he helped the Trotters win promotion to the Premier League in 1995, and Preston North End, remaining at Deepdale until his retirement in 1998. McDonald was a player/coach at North End

in his final season, before taking up a full-time coaching role following his retirement. He first linked up with Sam Allardyce in 2000, where he became the first-team coach at Bolton Wanderers, spending five-years at the Trotters before being appointed Iain Dowie’s assistant at Crystal Palace. A return to Carlisle United as the Cumbrians manager followed in summer of 2006, but McDonald departed Brunton Park a year later. He was back in management for a brief stay at Swedish side, Östersunds FK, and helped them survive relegation. McDonald was re-united with Allardyce at Blackburn Rovers in December 2008, as the assistant manager at Ewood Park, a role he and Allardyce would remain in for two-years, as they departed the East Lancashire outfit when Rovers’ new owners took control of the club. In the summer of 2011, McDonald joined up as assistant manager to Allardyce at West Ham United, helping the Hammers to promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt. He spent four years at Upton Park, as he became Blackpool’s new manager last June.

Mark Cullen has nine league goals for Blackpool so far this season and leads their goalscoring charts. He began his career at Hull City before spending time on loan at Bradford City, Bury and Stockport County. The 24 year old swapped Humberside for Luton in 2013, and featured over 70 times in a two year stint at Kenilworth Road.

Cullen later joined the Tangerines last summer, and has been a key player for Neil McDonald’s side during this campaign.

Communitytrust This year’s FA Girls’ Football Week will be expanded to two events to further drive female football participation. This year’s FA Girls’ Football Week will be expanded to two events to further drive female football participation. The first week, which is focused on encouraging primary and secondary schools to put on football sessions for girls, will take place from Monday 25 April. The second, 10-16th October, will aim at raising participation at higher and further education establishments. Clubs, community groups, wider educational establishments and other organisations are also being invited to run female-specific sessions during the week. In 2015, more than 16,000 people took part in the event, over triple the original target. It is aimed that 17,340 girls aged five – 16 take part in the first week, a 20 per cent increase on 2015. The weeks are being delivered in partnership with Independent Schools FA, English Schools FA, Association of Colleges Sport, British Universities and Colleges Sport, the Premier League and the Football League.

Kelly Simmons, FA director of football participation and development, said: “Following the success of last year’s event it was decided that we could have an even bigger impact on participation levels by running two weeks, focusing on different areas. “We hope that if more schools and groups put these sessions on that it won’t just encourage girls to start playing football, but they will carry on playing regularly, particularly for teenagers where sport drop-out rates can be high. “2015 was a landmark year for women’s football and there’s no doubt that big occasions such as the SSE Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley and the Lionesses achievements at the World Cup had a big impact on inspiring more girls to play. “We are confident, along with our partners, that even more progress will be made this year and we encourage as many schools as possible to sign up and help us to get more girls playing football.”

The FA is offering free-to-use resources to participating schools and institutions, which include session guides and promotional materials. This can be accessed by registering the session at TheFA.com/ GirlsFootballWeek.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON HAILS FANTASTIC POOLFOOT FARMFACILITIES Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the fantastic facilities at Poolfoot Farm after he officially opened the Club’s new training ground on Wednesday afternoon. A number of people from the local community were in attendance to witness the ceremony with the former Manchester United manager.

“I always admire people with a bit of foresight to plan and prove your set-up. From what I’ve seen at Fleetwood it seems exactly like that.

Ferguson paid tribute to chairman Andy Pilley’s efforts in transforming the Club, and believes the new complex will benefit young footballers.

“There’s an incentive for any kid to come here and practice and improve themselves. This facility certainly lends them to do that.

He said: “It really is fantastic when you see the magnitude of what’s happening at Fleetwood. The facility has surprised me and it’s absolutely superb.

“Today’s generation have to have a platform to play and it’s up to clubs to give them the enthusiasm to enjoy football.” Chairman Andy Pilley admitted it was a fantastic

day for the Club and one he’ll cherish for the rest of his life. “I was a fantastic day for the Club. Sir Alex Ferguson was superb and he was genuinely wowed by how wonderful the facility is. “It was a first class event and a great honour for us as a Club to have somebody who is a true footballing legend to come along and cut the ribbon. “He’s a proper footballing man and is very down to earth. We’ll certainly take his constructive criticism and the pointers he gave us on board. “I’m hopeful the masses of people who came along to get his autograph or to just capture a glimpse will be telling everybody what a great facility we have. “It’s primarily football based here but there’s a lot more happening such as allotments and a children’s park going in, and we now have a great bar and restaurant too.” And Town manager Steven Pressley added: “It’s was a massive day for the Club on Wednesday. It was great for Sir Alex Ferguson to give up his time to come along here.

“He’s an inspiration to all young managers like myself and it’s great to see him here. He’s always been supportive of myself. “I’ve met him on a number of occasions and like I’ve said he’s a true inspiration. I think he would appreciate what this facility can do to a football club. “He’s always been a manager who’s promoted and developed young players, and a facility like this not only helps the first team but also the young lads.”

ROONEY REFLECTS ON YOUTH TEAMCAMPAIGN Youth team manager Nathan Rooney recently reflected on his side’s campaign and his delight for Nathan Sheron and Mamadou Djabi as they earned professional contracts. The young Cod Army have seen an upturn in results throughout the 2015/16 season, and currently sit in a healthy position after beating Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday night. Sheron and Djabi have been key players for Rooney’s outfit, and were rewarded for their consistent performances with a 12 month deal. Rooney is now relishing working with the young players coming through the academy system, and hopes to develop their game over the coming months. He said: “The season has flown by really as we haven’t had much time to stand back and think

about each day and each week as its gone. It’s been a very quick circle of events. “In terms of football it’s been a great year for us in terms of the players we’ve got through, but now as the season nears the end it’s about keeping standards high. “We’ve got the young guns coming through the system for us now so we’re looking to inherit our own players and a new group of talent.” Rooney praised his players for a fantastic first half of the season, but admitted lessons need to be learnt after slipping away after Christmas.

“August to Christmas time was a breath of fresh air with regards to winning games and having that winning mentality. “We’d left pre-season on a high having a 100% winning record and they maintained that performance for five to six months. “We’ve unfortunately been on a little decline as of late and I can’t really put my finger on it, but like I say I haven’t really had a chance to look back and think about things. “The positives for us though is that we’ve managed to get two boys on professional contracts, and I want them both to progress. “I don’t want Nathan Sheron to stand still. The lad has show this year he can play two games a week for the 18’s and the 21’s. “I want Mamadou Djabi to come back as Mamadou but more of an outgoing personality which will allow people to look at him and think he’s ready to work.”
