› Good evening to you all to tonight’s JPT Northern Area final second leg against Barnsley at Highbury in front of the Sky Sports cameras. Tonight is a massive game for the football club and one which is very prestigious with it being live on Sky and a winner take all scenario. We’ve been really, really excited about it and for any player, manager or coach you want to be performing at Wembley Stadium, and this gives us a real opportunity.

in what was an intimidating atmosphere at Barnsley, but a very exciting one. In front of our home supporters now though we’ve got a great chance. We have a really good home record and have to use that to our advantage.

I want my players to enjoy tonight’s game and have no regrets. They need to apply the methods that we continuously talk about.

Barnsley are very much the in form team in the division right now. They’ve got a very good squad of players and are one of the biggest clubs in the league.

It’s important that we play our game and not the occasion. We have to play with passion but be controlled in that because it’s vitally important.

It’s a good challenge for us but one which I genuinely believe that we can win. In the last couple of months I don’t think there’s been a game where we haven’t been the better side.

The encouraging thing for me was that we handled the first leg extremely well

Leading this team out at Wembley would mean a great deal to myself, my staff and the chairman who has put huge resource into the Club. For Steven Pressley it would be a wonderful achievement but more importantly for the town of Fleetwood and everybody connected. I hope you enjoy the game.

Steven

IntroducingBarnsley › Barnsley are tonight’s visitors to Highbury Stadium for a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Final second leg against Fleetwood Town in front of the Sky cameras. The tie is finely poised at 1-1 heading into the hugely anticipated clash on the Fylde Coast, and both sides will believe that they can reach the Wembley Stadium showpiece in April. In the initial tie at Oakwell back in January, Town took the lead when Ashley Hunter’s driven cross was deflected beyond keeper Adam Davies to put the visitors in front. However, the lead didn’t last long as Ashley Fletcher glanced beyond Chris Maxwell on his Tykes debut to leave the encounter all-square. Manager Lee Johnson took over at the helm in February 2015, after leaving fellow League One

side Oldham Athletic in favour of a move to the Yorkshire outfit. As a player, the Newmarketnative was part of the youth sides at both Watford and Arsenal, moving on to sign professional terms Brighton and Hove Albion in 2000. The young Johnson didn’t make the breakthrough at the Withdean Stadium, and was designated to mainly cup appearances during his year-long stay on the south-coast. He swapped Sussex for Somerset in 2001 when he joined his father, Gary, at then Conference side Yeovil Town. Johnson junior spent six-years with the Glovers where he made 192 appearances in total, and helped the club to two-promotions during that period. A brief venture up to Scotland with Hearts was sandwiched in a return to the south-west in August 2006, with the midfielder signing for Bristol City in a move which would see him

re-united with his father at Ashton Gate. Johnson spent nearly six-years with the Robins, which included short-term loan deals at Derby County and Chesterfield. At City, Johnson helped the side to promotion to the second-tier as well as just missing out on a Premier League promotion via the Play-Offs. After turning out 174 times for Bristol City, Johnson departed for pastures new in February 2012 when he signed a deal with SPL side Kilmarnock. It would be at Killie where he would hang up his boots in January 2013. Shortly after his retirement, Johnson was appointed as manager at Oldham Athletic in March 2013 at the age of 31. Johnson helped the Latics to survival before Barnsley came calling last February, with the new boss guiding them to a mid-table finish.

It was his superb second half strike which beat York City in the Northern Area quarter final to set up a last four meeting with Wigan Athletic.

Wolverhampton Wanderers made their move in 2011. Game time was at a premium at Molineux, and he was loaned out to both Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town, signing a permanent deal with the latter in 2013. He played 50 times for the Terriers before his contract came to an end and re-signed for the Tykes three months ago.

He has played 13 times for the South Yorkshire outfit this season, and has found the net a total of four times in all competitions. Hammill started his career in the youth set-up at Liverpool but failed to establish himself with the Reds and spent a number of spells out on loan. Communitytrust › Fleetwood Town FC Community Trust is delighted to announce a new and exciting partnership with Myerscough College and our National Citizen Service (NCS) Programme. This past autumn, in partnership with the college, we have successfully delivered 2 NCS trips using students from the Sport department. NCS is an action-packed and proactive programme filled with fun and adventure. Young people take part in residential activities that will encourage them to take responsibility for their own actions and development. They will also have a real life opportunity to make a difference in their local community by planning and delivering their very own social action project! This helps to equip young people with the skills and experiences necessary to boost their CV and confidence. We have taken away 36 students to Lockerbie Manor for an actionpacked and proactive residential trip filled with fun, adventure and challenges aimed to empower and inspire them. This has given them the opportunity to learn valuable life skills that will help nurture their transition into adult life and prepare them for life in the real world but working within groups and overcome different challenges that they have faced. Myerscough lecturer and NCS ambassador for the college Gemma Watson, who has been present on both NCS trips, said: “The NCS programme is an excellent opportunity for our learners to engage in a community, outdoor activity based team building project.

“The programme supports the ethos of the college by providing opportunities for all whilst helping learners develop social independence and confidence through a range a fun filled activities”. Another of our ambassadors within the college is Director of Pastoral and lifelong Fleetwood Town fan, Bernard Pendleton. Without Bernard’s hard work, passion and support the partnership who never have been created and when asked about the programme, he commented; “Myerscough College has a fantastic partnership with Fleetwood Town FC and their NCS programme. “Currently we have had a large amount of students through the programme last term with a further 100 planned for this year.

YEARS OF TRANSFORMING GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL

“These are life changing opportunities, giving our students an ideal opportunity to have a break from their studies, trying out new outdoor activities, building their confidence, self-esteem and team building skills. “On return from the experience every student has commented on how enjoyable and amazing their experiences have been. They also complete community initiatives and projects and so, our local community also benefits.” This page is sponsored by:

Kiwomya: This is the next big step forme › Alex Kiwomya insists professional football is the next big step for him and believes he is at the right place to further his development. The highly rated young forward, on loan from Barclays Premier League champions Chelsea, penned a loan deal at Highbury last month. He made his debut for the Cod Army as a substitute against Doncaster Rovers recently, and showed great promise with his blistering speed. Kiwomya spent time on loan with tonight’s opponents last season, and made a total of five appearances for the Tykes during his stay at Oakwell. In an exclusive interview with #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Kiwomya states he is eager to

impress on the Fylde Coast. He said: “Professional football is the next big step for me and I’m looking forward to getting plenty of minutes under my belt and hopefully score some goals. “I heard about the interest from Fleetwood during the middle of January, and it grew stronger so it was a quick move for me really and one I had no hesitation in doing. “I’d heard a lot about Steven and just how good a manager he was, so I’m really looking forward to playing under him during my time here. “Fleetwood was a bit further than I thought it would be and it’s definitely colder here than in London! On a serious note though I’ll play in any condition. “I’m a player with real pace and like to think I am good technically. I score a lot of goals and like to make runs in behind. I’ll definitely bring more speed to the team.

“Things have been going good so far this season with Chelsea. I did have a setback at the beginning of the season though when I pulled my hamstring. “That curtailed my progress a bit but I’ve been playing a lot of games since then, and am back fully fit now and raring to go with Fleetwood.” Kiwomya feels his time in South Yorkshire helped him mature as a footballer, and admits his experiences with the club will help him during this loan stay. “Barnsley were the first club I had spent a loan period with last season, and it was hard because I didn’t really know what I was going in to. “My experiences at Barnsley will help me in this loan spell though, as I know exactly what to expect and what will be asked of me. “The game at this level is a lot

quicker and there’s far less time on the ball. You realise in the Under 21’s that you get the chance to run with the ball but here you have to pass and move. “It’s good to be involved here because the lads are nice and confident and they’re a great bunch so I enjoy playing with them on a day to day basis. “There’s always pressure when you play football, and being where we are in the table we know we have to start winning games.” And the forward is hoping his friendship with fellow new

signing Devante Cole will help the pair to flourish together on the pitch. “Me and Devante are very close as we’ve known each other for a number

of years. Hopefully we’ll link up well together and play more. “We’ve played against each other when I was at Chelsea and him at Manchester City, and we get along well so that’s a good partnership.”

Saddle up for Football toamsterdam › Prostate Cancer UK, the Official Charity Partner of The Football League, will stage its fourth annual football fundraiser, Football to Amsterdam from June 3-5, 2016. The hugely popular cycling challenge will now kick off from two locations – a northern leg starting from Oakwell, the home of Barnsley FC while the southern leg will start from the iconic Olympic Park – in a bid to recruit 500 riders from the football family to ride together for Men United. Earlier this year a 250-strong peloton including former international football stars Terry Butcher, Matt Holland and Luther Blissett, not to mention riders representing clubs throughout The Football League – and beyond - raised more than £350,000 by cycling from London to Amsterdam.

Preston North End manager Simon Grayson made the trip in honour of his close mate, Stephen ‘Garby’ Garbett, who died in September 2014. He joined Stephen’s son David, who also completed the 145-mile ride, at an exclusive behind-the-scenes event hosted by Professor Norman Maitland at a research facility at the University of York earlier this month to find out how the fundraising efforts are helping Men United make important signings for the season ahead. Whilst the North End manager has sharpened his squad for their return to the Championship, the team at Prostate Cancer UK have also made

some important decisions to allow a new generation of prostate cancer researchers to rise up through the ranks. With a respectable transfer budget of £500,000, Prostate Cancer UK can add five new PhD students to strengthen their Men United squad and provide creative and attacking flair to tackle the disease. Grayson said: “To ride in memory of my close friend, Stephen, and to do it with his son and some other great lads was an emotional journey. I won a medal for getting Preston to the Championship, but the medal I received for completing the challenge meant so much too.

”Mark Bishop, Director of Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “Riders who represent clubs up and down the land show a brilliant demonstration of what we call Men United: people joining one team to fight a common opposition – prostate cancer. These vital funds raised – our transfer kitty - will help us fund research to help fight the disease and will help us provide dedicated support and information to men and their families affected by prostate cancer.” For more information about the ride visit prostatecanceruk.org/amsterdam, call 0203 310 7034 or email: cycling@prostatecanceruk.org.

Murdoch praises Rooney’s work with the youthteam › Academy Director Stuart Murdoch has praised the work of youth team manger Nathan Rooney since his appointment to the role over the summer. Rooney has been at the helm since July, and alongside Murdoch has seen the youth team enjoy a successful campaign to date which sees them occupy the higher positions in the league.

“It’s important we get them their first professional contract at the end of their scholarship, and that is the ultimate aim for us as staff.

Murdoch hopes their impressive performances during the first half of the year will continue when they resume their season over the coming weeks.

“Winning games and finishing as high up as possible in the league isn’t always the priority, but it does indeed help with their confidence and gives a good feel around the place.

He said: “Nathan has done very well in his role. The importance of the youth team is to get players through to the first team eventually but certainly the development squad.

“We have to teach the players the importance of winning games and not losing them, because it’s a part of their education for when they progress in their careers.

“The players are under the microscope every day and every training session is important. The time is now short for the second years because they’ve got from now until the end of the season. “We want to see as many of the scholars as possible being given professional contracts. How that fits in with the rest of the club is dictated by what happens further up. “The only thing these boys can do now is influence the things they can influence and not worry about other things which are out of their control. “As far as they’re concerned they’ve just got to perform at the top of their ability from now until the end of the season. Hopefully it’ll bring with it a few more wins and keep us in a good position.” Murdoch admits it has been a frustrating

time as of late for the players and management, with a number of games postponed due to the weather conditions. “It’s been difficult for the boys since Christmas as we haven’t had a game. They had a short break over Christmas but since they’ve come back we haven’t managed to get a game on the grass. “We’ll have an enormous number of games to fit in to a short period of time, but a lot of those will be home games because of the unavailability of pitches prior to Christmas. “The first half of the season has gone well but this is youth team football and during the first half of the season most of the second year players will play. “This is the case with all clubs as the second years need the chance to show what they can do in order to earn contracts. “The Under 16 players will start to get involved and the older players will begin to move up to the development squads of clubs. “The first half of the season has been very good, and the boys have adapted to a new system of play very well along with a new coaching team.”
