GrahamAlexander › Good afternoon and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for today’s League One match against Bradford City. I would like to extend my welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Bradford City and wish them all a safe journey back after today’s game.

different. They have an excellent attitude to improving every day with the work we do and the experienced lads set a great example to follow.

Today we play our second home game in succession and we’re looking to build on our performances so far and improve wherever we can. I was very proud of the spirit shown by our players last week in what was a difficult game against a very experienced team.

I believe strongly in our team ethic and the environment created at the Club dictates that you need to show full commitment to your job to be here and succeed. We expect nothing less every time we come to work.

We’ve had a healthy rivalry with Rochdale over the last couple of years and I thought it was a game in which both teams were aware of each other’s threats and it was always going to be a tight game. After going behind in disappointing fashion we gathered momentum and after hitting the post we finally got the deserved equaliser towards the end with a fantastic header from Jamma.

Show the team your full support today and enjoy the game.

Graham

All the good work was nearly undone right at the death but Maxy made a great save from the penalty and the draw was a fair result. The players always show a strong work ethic for the full 90 minutes and proved their excellent fitness levels in finishing the game yet again on the front foot. Our young players are constantly learning new lessons each week with the variety of opponent we play, and today will be no

Introducingbradford city › Bradford City make the trip across the Pennines to Highbury today for a Sky Bet League One fixture against Graham Alexander’s Fleetwood Town side. Following their 2-1 victory away at Oldham Athletic last Saturday, the Bantams currently reside in eleventh position, having attained eight points from their six matches to date.

Colchester United in February of that year.

Goals either side of half-time from loanees Reece Burke and Devante Cole put City two to the good, only for Joseph Mills to add an 81st minute consolation for the hosts.

Following his job at Colchester, Parkinson would spend time in charge of Hull City and Charlton Athletic, with his move to West Yorkshire next on the agenda.

Guided by Phil Parkinson, the 47-year-old Chorley native took over the managerial position at Valley Parade in August 2011. As a player, Parkinson began his career with Southampton before moving onto Bury in 1988 where he made 145 club appearances for the Shakers over a four-year period. The midfielder would move to Reading in 1992, and would spend a further eleven seasons in Berkshire, making 361 appearances and scoring 20 goals for the Royals. After finishing his professional playing career in early 2003, Parkinson would subsequently take his first footsteps into management with 4

During his time with the U’s, Parkinson oversaw the promotion winning campaign of 2005/06 as Colchester finished runners-up in League One.

Town loan man Josh Morris, amongst others to have signed on the dotted line. Should the Bantams come away from Highbury victorious today, a win could see them move just shy of the Play-Off places.

Bradford achieved promotion from League Two via the Play-Offs and also finished League Cup runners-up in what was a memorable term for the Bantams.

City enjoyed another fine cup run last season, reaching the FA Cup quarter final following victories over Premier League sides Chelsea and Sunderland, which further enhanced the growing reputation of Parkinson as a manager. Having finished seventh in the third-tier at the end of 2014/15, Bradford brought in eleven new faces during the off-season to bolster their ranks. Brought in were the likes of Brad Jones, Paul Anderson, Steve Davies and former Fleetwood

as the home side opening up a two goal advantage.

Late goals from Jamie Proctor and Nathan Pond rescued a point in dramatic fashion for the Cod Army at Valley Parade in March.

But Town pulled a goal back when Jamie Proctor expertly headed in Tyler Forbes’ cross before Nathan Pond fired home in a stoppage time scramble.

The Bantams went in front when experienced striker Jon Stead scored after converting Billy Clarke’s cross at the front post.

The result meant Graham Alexander’s side occupied 10th position, four point outside of the Play-off places with City a point further back.

Midfielder Christopher Routis later squeezed in James Hanson’s far post cross at the start of the second half

Communitytrust › With the summer transfer window closing recently, the Community Trust welcomed eight new recruits! They come in the form of our new football education students who have linked up with the Club for two years to study a BTEC level three course. Equivalent to three A Levels, it offers the perfect chance for students to study and play football, including futsal, the only form of indoor football approved by FIFA, UEFA, and the FA. After completing their two-years, they will have gained a qualification to go and work in the world of fitness and sport. The eight students have all joined from local high schools after completion of their GSCES. One of the eight, 16-year-old Josh, an avid Fleetwood Town supporter, told the Club website he can’t wait to start studying with the team he adores! “I want to do something related to sport and I am hoping I can find out what career 6

path I want to take during my BTEC at Fleetwood Town. “I support the Club and watch Fleetwood Town home and away, so this was the perfect course for me! It is a great environment to do my studies. “I found out about the opportunity when the Community Trust visited Fleetwood High. I am really excited about the next two years.” Recruitment for this year’s course is not over yet, with the Club still having opens for the new academic year. Futsal Director Dave Walton added: “We have started our induction week with the new students before their studies start next week.

“We have eight first year students and eight in the second year. We will continue to play futsal but now we have opened it up to 11-a-side matches.“ › Fleetwood Town’s development midfielder Harvey Hodd attended Fleetwood Town’s U9s kit launch. The youngster, who joined Fleetwood at the start of this calendar year, was in attendance alongside the Club’s popular mascot, Captain Cod. The visit signifies how not only first team players are out in the local community playing their part as the Club continues to build strong relationships with a number of key stakeholders.

YEARS OF TRANSFORMING GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL

Following the visit, Community Sports Coordinator Mike Lee said: “Harvey enjoyed interacting with the Fleetwood Town U9s and attending their official kit launch. “We have had a positive start to the season in terms of player appearances with more to follow in the coming weeks.” This page is sponsored by:

Shot stopper Maxwell has welshambitions › Chris Maxwell was the hero for Town last Saturday afternoon as he kept out Ian Henderson’s stoppage time penalty to earn his side a share of the spoils. The Welshman dived low to his left to keep out the attacker’s effort from 12 yards, and ensure the Cod Army’s unbeaten home record in the league remained intact. His performances between the sticks for the Fylde Coast outfit have been recognised by Chris Coleman, with the 25-year-old named in Wales’ preliminary squads for recent qualifiers. And with the Red Dragons on course to qualify for next summer’s European Championships, Maxwell now has aspirations of breaking into the 23 man squad. He said: “All I can do is play well every week for Fleetwood Town. Hopefully my call-up to the Welsh squad will come one of these days. “I was sitting in my front room watching the game against Cyprus as a football fan cheering and jumping around the room when we scored. “It’s a great achievement what Wales are doing and they look on course to qualify, so to be a part of that would be something special.” Discussing his penalty heroics against Dale last weekend, Maxwell was always confident in his own ability to keep out Henderson’s strike. “He put the ball to my left, I dived to my left 8

and saved it! What more can I say?! “You can find yourself contradicting yourself a lot when you study penalty takers. Players these days take so many penalties that they put them either way. “Even if the research is done it’s never 100% accurate as it’s more like 50/50. You just have to see what it’s like on the day and luckily it was my day against Rochdale. “The penalty was a tough one for the referee to give as their lad is getting a shot off and he’s shifted the ball quite well and is brought down. “We performed really well but Rochdale did too and it was a typical League One game really. There was a lot of football played and a lot of physicality to it as well. “We switched off a little bit for their first goal as they’ve put a good ball in which their 6ft 5” winger isn’t going to miss. You’d have fancied him to score from there all day. “It wasn’t an easy one to defend but if we make slight adjustments and improvements we can stop conceding those sort of goals. “I did feel as if we deserved something out of the game, but on the flip side they did too and

the draw was a fair outcome. “Hopefully my save at the end will help us to kick on and that we can build over the next few weeks and this season. “Every single player who is on the pitch each week has a big part to play even if they’re not in the limelight. “A lot of hard work goes unnoticed for many players. I was in the spotlight against Rochdale for making a save from 12 yards but it’s part and parcel of being a goalkeeper.”

sterling proud to pull on northern irelandjersey › Fleetwood Town’s Tre Sterling recently returned from Slovenia where he had been representing Northern Ireland’s Under 17 squad. The youngster, who is a part of Nathan Rooney’s youth set-up, started two games for his country whilst out on the continent but was on the losing side on both occasions.

“To walk out onto the field and be able to sing your national anthem gets to me every time, but at the end of the day we’re there to do a job for our country.

Sterling, who hails from Belfast, signed a two-year scholarship with the Club during the summer and has impressed so far whilst at Highbury.

“I’ve been involved with the set-up for the past two years. It started out with a few friendly games against Finland and Poland which then led to the Victory Shield.

Speaking exclusively to #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Sterling discusses his time in Slovenia and what it meant to don the Northern Ireland jersey.

“It’s a great experience for me as I get to travel to a lot of different countries. It’s good to be able to see how different countries work and what they have to offer footballing wise.

He said: “It’s an honour to be selected for your country but to start both games recently with my international teammates was incredible and the best feeling in the world.

“The standard at this level is a lot higher than what people imagine. I didn’t expect it to be as competitive as it was when I first stepped into the squad. “You’ve got to be fit for it as you’re giving everything for your country anyway, but the standard itself is very high. “There was a good buzz about the team during the recent trip to Slovenia. A lot of the boys are now playing

over in England. “To be able to meet up with them and hear their stories about how pre-season with their new clubs has gone is fantastic.” The midfielder has also enjoyed a good start to life on the Fylde Coast, with the young Cod Army winning three out of their first four opening league games. “My time here so far has been brilliant to be fair. The players and the coaching staff have all been very welcoming. I’m starting to fit in well now. “I haven’t really been involved with the games that much so far due to international clearances, but I played my first league game last Saturday. “We came away with a 3-2 win but it wasn’t the greatest performance. We did the job though which continued our great start to the season. “I’ve got the EURO’s coming up in October so I’m going to work hard to hopefully be selected for that squad. “I’m hoping over the next year or so I can get a taste of Under 21 football with Fleetwood, but all I can do is keep working hard and impressing.”
