› Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury Stadium for this afternoon’s Sky Bet League One game against Chesterfield. I would like to wish Dean Saunders and his Chesterfield side a warm welcome to Fleetwood and hope they all have a safe trip home afterwards. Chesterfield have been a very progressive club over the last several seasons with good foundations being laid by their previous manager Paul Cook, which has been followed up by an encouraging start from Dean which finds them in a mid table position. The league table remains very tight as Chesterfield’s position shows, with them only four points off the Play-Offs and only six above the relegation zone. We were obviously disappointed to lose the services of the now Chesterfield player Richard Wood, who proved in his short time here to be an excellent acquisition. On a positive note, we are delighted to have secured the

2

Print Partner

services of Dionatan Teixeira who has settled into the group very well. He will now be with us until the start of January and I’m sure as his performances have shown will become a firm favourite with our supporters. Another positive for us is Club captain Nathan Pond’s return to training this week and also the matchday squad. Nathan epitomises the type of characters that we would like to have within our Club. The three games in quick succession against Burton Albion, Sheffield United and Barnsley on paper were very difficult fixtures, so for the players to have taken six points from a possible nine is very encouraging. I must stress that there are great improvements still to come and as a group we must show greater consistency on a regular basis. Philosophy is a word that is used regularly within the football industry, and yes as managers we all have our own beliefs but ultimately it is about winning games of football, and it is vital that within this Club that winning is at the forefront of everything we do. Enjoy the game,

Steven

IntroducingCHESTERFIELD › Chesterfield are the visitors to Highbury Stadium for this afternoon’s Sky Bet League One encounter against Steven Pressley’s side. There have been a number of changes at the Proact Stadium since last season, with manager Paul Cook deprating for Portsmouth and players such as Tendayi Darikwa, Sam Clucas and Gary Roberts all joining other clubs.

Jimmy Ryan was another to leave the club as he joined the Cod Army on a two year deal after rejecting a contract offer at his former club. The Spireites got their league campaign off to the best possible start with a 3-1 home win against Barnsley. At the end of August, they were in the top six after a terrific 2-0 win away to Millwall, but they let a 2-0 lead slip in the last ten minutes

at home to Wigan, which marked the start of a five game winless streak.

The Derbyshire outfit then picked up a much needed three points on the road as they beat Crewe 2-1. This month has seen them win back to back games for the first time this season, against Walsall and Southend respectively. Currently, the club’s top scorer this season is Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. The former Manchester United youth team striker has scored five goals, since joining in the summer on a free transfer. Today’s visitors are managed by Dean Saunders, who was appointed in May 2015 following Cook’s departure to Portsmouth. Saunders played as a striker for a number of clubs including Liverpool, Aston Villa and Galatasaray. He is also Wales’ fourth all-time international goal scorer with 22. The now 51 year old started his managerial career at Wrexham in 2008, before taking over at Doncaster in 2011.

In his first season, Saunders couldn’t help the club avoid relegation from the Championship, but led Rovers to the top of League One before Wolves came calling in January 2013. After four months at Molineux, Saunders was relieved of his duties as Wolves were relegated, and returned to management last season with Crawley Town.

Chesterfield 0-1 Fleetwood Town Despite beating Chesterfield 1-0 at the Proact Stadium in the second leg of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area final, Town fell to a 3-2 aggregate defeat to the Spireites.

Richards brought another save out of the Fleetwood shotstopper from Ritchie Humphreys’ lofted pass as the hosts finished the half on top. The second period began in a much cagier fashion with neither side able to create a clear-cut opening.

The Cod Army started brightly and home defender Ian Evatt was forced into an excellent last-ditch block to stop Jamille Matt converting a cross from six yards out.

With time starting to run out, Antoni Sarcevic’s goalbound effort was blocked and Fleetwood substitute Matty Hughes was booked for diving in the area.

In an entertaining opening it was the hosts who threatened next with Jimmy Ryan and Marc Richards both forcing saves from Chris Maxwell and Sam Hird seeing his shot blocked.

Home sub Doyle twice failed to finish Gary Roberts’ crosses when well-placed and he was made to pay for profligacy when veteran Parkin slotted in after poor defending.

Communitytrust › Uzbek goalkeeper Rustam Nartadjiev took part in a goalkeeping session with a number of local youngsters at Fuse Football. Nartadjiev, along with Sergey Prokhorov, is spending three months with the Cod Army as part of the Club’s exciting partnership with Lokomotiv Tashkent. The pair have been training regularly with Barry Nicholson’s development squad, and are one month in to their stay on the Fylde Coast. Speaking after a hugely popular goalkeeping session at the Club’s new training complex in Thornton, Nartadjiev discussed his time in England so far. He said: “This is my first time training kids. I have never tried training kids before but I really enjoyed it. Maybe in the future when I’m not playing myself I would like to become a goalkeeper coach. “Everything is really fine here in England. I arrived on the 18th of September and have already been here for a month. I am really happy to be here and it is a great experience for me. “England is excellent and I like the weather. In Uzbekistan it is normally very hot in the summer and autumn, but here it is a bit cooler and I really like that. “The boys in the team are really friendly and help me and Sergey a lot. They are helping us understand the language, and our English is getting better every day. I really like to be training with the team. “The training over here is hard and a bit difficult. In Uzbekistan the training is more simple and we do a lot of the same things every day. 6

Charity No 1079309 Company No 3876305

Here in England the training is different everyday, which I really like. “Normally in Uzbekistan we have one training during a day. Some days over here we train three times a day. “I already feel that I am getting better and stronger as a player, and when I go back to Uzbekistan I hope to have gained even more from the training.” › Fleetwood Town players Nick Haughton, Tyler Forbes, Jamie Proctor and Danny Andrew recently visited Flakefleet Primary School. All four players interacted and answered questions from the students as well as playing a fun game of dodgeball during their visit.

YEARS OF TRANSFORMING GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL

The visit was quick off the back of Ashley Hunter and Eggert Jonsson’s visit to Larkholme Primary School as Fleetwood Town continue to maintain their high number of community appearances. Mike Lee, the Club’s community sports co-ordinator said: “It was great to see all six lads go along to the two primary schools and meet the children. “All six lads really enjoyed their respective visits and the Club are looking forward to more successful visits in the future.” This page is sponsored by:

Chesterfield years the best of mycareer › Midfielder Jimmy Ryan admits he has fond memories of his time as a Chesterfield player, but is focused on helping Town climb up the Sky Bet League One table. Ryan moved to Highbury from the Spireites during the summer months, and has gone on to establish himself as a key member of the team.

“We also reached the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley the year before, so I’ve got quite a few good memories.

The Liverpudlian helped Chesterfield reach the Play-Offs last season, where they fell to eventual winners Preston North End over two legs.

“In the dressing room we obviously knew our targets. That target was to get into the Play-Offs but I don’t know how many of us actually believed we could.

His performances in the middle for the North Derbyshire outfit caught the eye of the Cod Army, and he signed a two year deal with Town in June. Ryan will miss this afternoon’s game aganst his former club however, as he serves a one game suspension. Speaking to #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Ryan reflected on his successful couple of campaigns at the Proacat Stadium. He said: “I spent my last two seasons at Chesterfield and they were probably the best of my career to be fair. “Getting promoted and winning League Two was my main highlight with the club, but we also a good campaign last year and got into the Play-Offs. 8

Print Partner

“The longer the season went on though we did start to believe and knew we were a good side, and thankfully we made it which was a great achievement for us. “A lot of the lads left over the summer, with the likes of Tendayi Darikwa moving to Burnley, Sam Clucas joining Hull City and Gary Roberts going to Portsmouth. “The management team left too so there’s a lot of new faces there. There are still a few lads who I know and I’ve still got good friends there. “It’ll be nice to see them and catch up with them all again, but I’m just hoping we can pick up another win to help us move further up the league. “There was a bit of a rivalry between the two clubs when we were trying to get out of League

Two. We were both trying to go for promotion. “And then last year it was a bit nip and tuck for the Play-Off places at the later stages, but hopefully I can just do well for Fleetwood now.” Ryan has been impressed with new manager Steven Pressley, and believes it’s only a matter of time before they move up the league. “I’ve enjoyed my time with the new manager up to now. There’s been a few changes in training and the formation, and it’s been a lot more intense. “To be fair I’ve enjoyed the intensity in training and in games, and everything about the place now is really enjoyable. “For the Coventry game, even though the new manager had only been in charge for a couple of days, I thought we did well. “We adapted to the way he wanted us to play, and then we obviously took that into the Burton game which we got a great result in.”

Youth team want to go onebetter › Youth team forward Jordan Hancox says that the squad cannot wait to take on Hartlepool away in the FA Youth Cup first round. The young Cod Army will travel to Victoria Park this Tuesday evening looking to reach the second round, where they will play either Accrington Stanley or Basford United, again on the road. With the Under 18’s going well in the league, Hancox is confident the squad can take that form into the match and progress. He said: “We’re really excited about it because they’re very special games. We got to the third round against Sunderland last year which was a great experience. “I think we’ll be confident going into the game. We know what Hartlepool are about, but we

know we have enough quality to better them. “We want to go as far as we can in the cup and better last season. That’s our target. The way we’re playing, we feel that we can have a good shot at that.” The second year scholar is certainly proving to be a very important part of Nathan Rooney’s team, having scored four goals this season, and set up a handful for his team mates. “Everyone should put in 100% effort and hard work. You can improve your quality but I don’t think you can improve your enthusiasm.

“I do as much as I can for the team off the ball, so as when we do break we can create chances. My enthusiasm is one of the best parts of my game.” After a disappointing league campaign last season, Hancox believes the team has the ability to even challenge for top spot in the North West. “This season we’ve got a lot of better players, a lot more confidence within the squad and it shows when we are getting good results against difficult opponents. “We do want to challenge for the league title. I think with the quality we have, we have the ability to do that.” Hancox’s good form in the youth team has also earnt him recognition in the Club’s development squad, and the player is relishing the opportunity. “It’s a completely different experience. At the development level, it’s so much more intense. There’s bigger, better players, and playing with those kind of players improves your game as well. “I feel like I’ve done quite well in the youth team, and kept my position for this season. So now I need to show the manager [Barry Nicholson] exactly what I can do.” Print Partner
