GrahamAlexander › Good afternoon and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for today’s League One match against Colchester United. I would like to extend our welcome to everyone at Colchester United and wish them all a safe journey home after today’s match.

goals away from home and take all three points was a great reward, especially for the players.

Today we’re back at Highbury after two tough away games with contrasting results if not performances. The first at Oldham left us very frustrated and scratching our heads as to how we came away empty handed.

They have all worked extremely hard since pre-season began and have bought in to everything we are trying to do here. We are still in the early stages of where the Club wants and needs to go and along the way we will have to take a bloody nose now and then.

We created enough excellent chances to score over the course of the game and when we conceded what was the winning goal, it was a bitter pill to take. We played on the front foot from the start and looked very dangerous but we just couldn’t find that finishing touch. We were of course disappointed with the result but pleased with the overall performance. We analyse every game and are always honest with our appraisal to the players and we believed that we saw promising signs of improvement. This belief was realised with our result on Tuesday at Bury. We had just as good a start as before but fell behind to a goal that was both against the run of play and controversial. The difference this time was our ruthlessness in front of goal. We played at a tempo with composure which was great to see and we took the game to the opposition at every opportunity. To score four

But when we do, we all need to remember how far our Club has come and it hasn’t always been plain sailing. If you want to be successful in life, you have to have strong beliefs, a great resilience and work ethic with an ambition that overcomes any setbacks along way. These are qualities I see in this group of players and all staff we have working here. Enjoy the game today and let the players hear your full support.

IntroducingColchester › Essex outfit Colchester United pulled off arguably one of the greatest relegation escapes in the Football League last season. The U’s looked destined for League Two football but a dramatic turn in fortune saw Tony Humes’ men survive on the final day of the season with victory over PNE in front of the Sky cameras. Winning four of their final eight league matches, United’s revival started over the Easter period with back-to-back wins against Port Vale and Barnsley. Their other victory came right here in Fleetwood, as two goals in the final six minutes from Gavin Massey and Chris Porter saw Colchester take maximum points away from the Fylde Coast in a 3-2 thriller. United will be looking to stay away from the bottom four this season, and Humes strengthened his squad during the summer months with the capture of former Newcastle United and Ipswich Town midfielder Darren Ambrose. Ambrose, on his arrival at United, told BBC Essex that he feels Colchester is a club that are certainly heading in the right direction. “I feel as though I’m joining a club on the up. The facilities are fantastic and it’s a young, vibrant team,” Ambrose told BBC Essex. “It’s a move I feel comfortable with. The team plays the right way and I spoke with Elliott Hewitt at Ipswich, who was on 4

Also through the Colchester Community Stadium entrance door is experienced goalkeeper Elliott Parish and highly thought of midfielder Joe Edwards from Yeovil Town. Colchester began their season at home to Fleetwood’s near neighbours Blackpool, securing a 2-2 draw with goals coming from Ambrose and a volley from Alex Gilbey. Two defeats have since followed for the U’s against Reading in the Capital One Cup and last weekend at Peterborough United. The U’s drew a blank at home to Oldham Athletic on Tuesday evening, but went close to winning the game when Sammie Smzodics hit the inside of the post. Athletic went close in the first half through Jonathan Forte and Liam Kelly, as they maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign. United improved after the interval, with Joe Edwards and Darren Ambrose seeing efforts go just wide.

Dream start for McManusat Highbury › Scottish striker Declan McManus enjoyed a fine start to his Fleetwood Town career when he netted a thunderbolt from distance against Southend United on the opening day of the 2015/16 Sky Bet League One season at Highbury. McManus put pen to paper on a deal with the Cod Army from Aberdeen during the summer, having enjoyed a successful season on-loan at Morton last year, where he finished the season as top goalscorer as well as being named the division’s player of the year. His goalscoring exploits in the Scottish League One attracted the interest of Town, with the youngster finding the net on 23 occasions, and helping his parent side to promotion to the Scottish Championship. He now hopes to replicate this form for Graham Alexander’s side, and has set himself an early target of 10 goals in his debut season in English football, but admits the main priority is to help the team achieve in their second campaign at this level. In an exclusive interview with #codarmy, the Club’s official match day programme, McManus discusses his move to the Fylde Coast and how he settled into life at Highbury after moving south of the border. He said: “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it so far at Fleetwood. I personally got off to a flyer in the league against Southend but every game has been tough. “The Hartlepool game was obviously a different kind of tie but sometimes that happens in the cup and it was a disappointment to be knocked out.

moment.

“We’ve shown in large parts of games that we’re a very good team, and have been the better team in all of our games so far.

“I didn’t want to sit there and do nothing on the bench, so that’s why I went to Morton to try and showcase myself and I managed to do that.”

“Unfortunately the results don’t show that but it’s early on and if we can pick up a win I’m sure it will look completely different.”

The opportunity to ply his trade in English football was one he admits he couldn’t turn down, and now wants to kick-on and help Town better their 10th place finish last year.

His introduction to the Cod Army faithful against the Shrimpers was a spectacular one, with his strike an early contender for goal of the season, as he beat visiting keeper Daniel Bentley from all of 25 yards.

“It was always an ambition of mine to come down south

“It was a dream start for me on my debut, but the most important thing that day was a win and we never managed to get that. “Hopefully I can score more goals for Fleetwood now. I’ll take any sort of goal really but ones like my opener at Highbury will do me nicely. “A striker’s job is to score goals and last year up in Scotland I managed to score a number of goals which was pleasing. “If a striker scores that many goals there’s usually a chance of interest, and that luckily happened for me and Fleetwood got in touch. “I’d made 13 or 14 substitute appearances for Aberdeen who are obviously a big club in Scotland and are on the up at the

and test myself, and I was delighted when the opportunity presented itself. “I always set myself a target of 10 goals at the start of a season, so hopefully I can definitely do that and set myself a new target from there.

Pulled it on inthe past › Dean Howell and Steven Gillespie are two former Town players to have donned the Colchester United jersey during their careers.

moving on to Altrincham and Warrington Town.

Steven Gillespie

Defender Howell joined Colchester in 2005 on a six-month contract but a double hernia restricted his appearances.

Gillespie spent four seasons in Essex but saw opportunities limited as his stay was marred by dogged injuries, but did manage to find the net 25 times in 98 appearances. The striker joined Colchester for a club record fee from Cheltenham Town in the summer of 2008 after enjoying a productive spell in Gloucestershire. He began his career in the youth set-up at Liverpool before moving south to Bristol City in 2004 and spending a couple of

seasons at Ashton Gate. It was during that time in Bristol where he first appeared for Cheltenham, joining them on loan on two separate occasions.

Dean Howell

After becoming a fans favourite at Whaddon Road, he made his move permanent in 2006 and scored 16 goals during the 2007/08 campaign. It was this form that made the U’s make a move for the attacker, and he later penned a deal at the club as they looked to regain their Championship status. Despite a promising start, injuries played a part in his progression and he struggled to make a real impact in Essex. His form improved when the U’s appointed former Cheltenham boss John Ward as their new manager, as he netted nine goals in ten starts. Gillespie committed his future to Colchester for a further two years in May 2011, and ended the season with 11 goals in League One, his best return in the Football League. The Cod Army snapped up Gillespie in June 2012 and he netted only four times as he failed to replicate his Colchester form at Highbury. He left Town during the January transfer window in 2014, and teamed up with Ward once again at Bristol Rovers, before

He featured only four times for the U’s after joining them from Halifax Town where he had caught the eye the previous campaign. Howell joined the Cod Army on a two-year deal in 2012 after being released by Crawley Town, and played a key part in Fleetwood’s first season in the Football League. He appeared 38 times for Town over two seasons, and spent time out on loan at Bury during the 2013/14 campaign.
