Words from theChairman › Chairman Andy Pilley was delighted to unveil new manager Steven Pressley to the national media earlier this week after appointing the former Sky Blues boss on a two-year deal. Pressley, a former Scottish international, put pen to paper on deal with the Cod Army on Tuesday and will take charge of today’s game against his old side.

Despite starting the 2013/14 campaign with a 10 point deduction and having to play their home games at Northampton, Pressley kept the Sky Blues up as they finished 18th.

His first permanent managerial position came north of the border with Falkirk during the summer of 2009 following the resignation of Eddie May.

He was relieved of his duties at the Ricoh Arena earlier this year, and was appointed as Graham Alexander’s successor at Highbury on Tuesday afternoon.

After leaving Falkirk, Pressley was appointed Coventry City manager in March 2013 and took over from Mark Robins who joined Huddersfield Town.

Pilley said: “I am really pleased with the appointment. Steven has done an excellent job in incredibly difficult circumstances at the two football clubs he has been at before. “We truly believe given the stability, the continuality and the facilities we have at Fleetwood Town, we have all the ingredients to supply any manager with a great opportunity and we think Steven will be a great success.

“There were various standards and attributes that we were looking for. We spoke to a lot of people in football and the feedback was consistent. “Steven is very hard working, he is intelligent and he has his own ideas on how the game should be played which appeals to myself personally and the other senior management within the Club. “We want to play an exciting style of football that will entertain the public. It is a matter of fact that Steven has done very well at clubs in difficult situations. We are convinced he will do very well at Fleetwood Town given everything that we have to offer him. “It has been very flattering some of the names that have applied for the position and a reflection of how far the Club has progressed. “We have got our first choice and the man that we wanted. We will work with Steven now to make sure it is a happy and successful time for Fleetwood Town.”

In focus:Steven pressley › Fleetwood Town’s new manager Steven Pressley has had a long and illustrious playing career, appearing for both of the Old Firm Clubs as well as Hearts. Pressley began his professional playing career with Rangers in 1990, and spent four seasons at Ibrox before a move to Coventry City.

A move to Danish side Randers followed after his release from Celtic in 2008, and he signed a four-month contract with the Superliga team. He left Denmark at the end of his contract, and moved to Falkirk on a short-term deal until the end of the 2008/09 campaign.

He spent only a year with the Sky Blues and moved back up north to join Dundee United, where enjoyed three campaigns. His most prominent spell in the game came with Hearts as he made over 250 appearances for the Edinburgh outfit between 1998 and 2006. After leaving Hearts, Pressley crossed the Old Firm divide and signed a deal with Celtic and made his debut in January 2007.

His first experience as manager came with Hearts in 2005, when he took charge of two games on a caretaker basis towards the end of the season. Pressley was appointed assistant manager of Falkirk in 2009 following his retirement, and was later named manager in February 2010. The Scottish international became boss of Coventry City in March 2013 and succeeded Mark Robins, before being relieved of

his duties in February of this year. Joining Pressley on the Fylde Coast will be Neil MacFarlane, who had a playing career with the likes of Hearts and Queen of the South. He assisted Pressley while in charge of Falkirk, and took up a similar role alongside him at the Ricoh Arena.

Introducingcoventry city › Coventry City are today’s visitors to Highbury Stadium and they make the trip up from the Midlands to face a Fleetwood Town side now managed by their former boss Steven Pressley. The Sky Blues have enjoyed a fine start to the season in the third-tier, having collected 19 points from their opening ten encounters, with Coventry sitting comfortably inside the Play-Off places. Managed by Tony Mowbray, the experienced Saltburn native took over as City manager in March, initially on a deal until the end of the season, before agreeing to remain at the club prior to the 2015/16 campaign. Mowbray started his playing career with his boyhood side Middlesbrough in 1982, and four years later he was made captain of the Teesside outfit. In his nine-years at Ayresome Park, Mowbray helped Boro to successive promotions in 1986/87 and 1987/88. He left Middlesbrough after making 348 appearances in favour of a move to Celtic in 1991, where the tough-tackling defender spent four years with the Hoops. A move back down south was next on 4

the agenda for Mowbray, who subsequently spent five-years with Ipswich Town, before hanging up his boots in 2000 after 554 appearances over an 18-year career in the professional game. Following retirement, Mowbray returned to Ipswich Town as a coach, filling in as caretaker for the Tractor Boys in 2002 following the sacking of George Burley. In May 2004, he took charge of Scottish side Hibernian before returning to England to take over at West Bromwich Albion two-years later. Brief spells at the Baggies and then a managerial post at Celtic followed, with Mowbray returning to where it all began in

October 2010, taking the vacant post with Middlesbrough, a position that he would hold at the Riverside Stadium for three-years. After parting company with Middlesbrough in October 2013, Mowbray spent over a year out of work, before he accepted the job with Coventry in March, and keeping them up on the final day of the season. Having finished 17th in League One last season, Coventry strengthened during the pre-season period, with the signings of Sam Ricketts, Marc-Antonie Fortune and Adam Armstrong all boosting their ranks. Should Coventry City come away from the Fylde Coast with all three-points this afternoon, then they could move level on points with an automatic spot.

Fleetwood Town 0-2 Coventry City Two late goals from Dominic Samuel and Frank Nouble earned Coventry City an away win at Highbury in March to ease their relegation fears. After making a goal-line clearance to keep out Jamie Proctor’s header, Sky Blues defender Chris Stokes then headed against the bar in the second half.

On-loan Reading striker Samuel got the breakthrough on 88 minutes when he cut in from the left to slot home. Nouble then sealed victory in the fifth minute of stoppage time after his first effort had hit the post. City’s second successive victory under new manager Tony Mowbray moves them three points clear of the League One danger zone.

Jason Sharp from the Trust said: “We currently deliver FUNdamental football skills to a number of nurseries and preschool settings in the Wyre borough. “We feel it is an important part of a child’s development, and our early years delivery is based on fun, inclusive games and movements.

the positive outcome the women’s World Cup has had.”

› The female football development festival was recently held in Fleetwood for players aged 14-15. Six clubs were present at the festival which included Fleetwood, Preston North End, Accrington Stanley, Morecambe, Blackpool and Rochdale. The event was based on participation rather than competition, with an onus on developing female footballers in the area.

“This keeps the children engaged whilst learning at a rapid pace plus having lots of fun!

Town’s development players Kieran Dunbar and Gary Lavery were present to show their support to the Community Trust.

“Beehive nursery are the latest nursery we have forged a partnership with, delivering our activities twice a week.”

The ambition at highbury attractedme › Fleetwood Town’s new manager Steven Pressley stated that the ambition and the stability at the Club were two of a number of factors that attracted him to the post. Pressley succeeded Graham Alexander this week and was unveiled to the national media during a press conference at Highbury Stadium. He praised former boss Graham Alexander for the foundations he had built, and now hopes to progress the Club further. In an exclusive interview with the Club’s official website, Pressley admits he is looking forward to the challenge ahead. He said: “There were many things that attracted me to this job. Firstly the ambition of the football club and secondly the stability of the football club and the infrastructure. “When you come here you can feel the drive and the motivation from within the Club. It has grown dramatically over the past nine to ten years. “They have a fantastic stadium and incredible training base which is fit for the Premier League. It’s a wonderful Club with great ambition. “I spoke to the chairman during the earlier part of the week and we had a good conversation. I then spoke to my representatives who arranged for me to come up on Monday.

“The chairman had done all his research on me and probably knew me better than I did! The truth is that we seem to fit and that’s vitally important. “A manager has to fit the football club and I think the fit is good. I have the same thoughts and the same progression as the chairman. “There will be a lot of hard work as we are currently in a poor predicament in terms of league positioning, but that gives us a scope to really develop the players.” Neil MacFarlane has joined Pressley’s coaching team, while Chris Lucketti will remain as his assistant manager. “This is a job I’m so excited about and I know Neil is too. This Club has ambition and hopefully we can continue to enhance the very good work done by the previous managers. “There’ll be no hand grenade from me. We have very good reports on the current staff who have worked exceptionally well at this Club. “They can very much help us and Chris will assist Neil and help with me and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Pressley’s first challenge will be that of his former employers Coventry City who visit the Fylde Coast this afternoon. “It’s amazing and that’s the type of scenarios football throws up. I had two terrific years at Coventry but two challenging ones. “I think I experienced every circumstance that a football manager could experience, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. “After losing my job I was extremely disappointed, angry and bitter to a degree because of the work we had done there. “We worked tirelessly to stabilise and try and turn that club around. After the initial two months of anger you start thinking more clearly.

league and we have to be creative. The great thing for me is that I don’t have to reduce the budget here.

things to the team and principles we’ll work towards, but that will take several weeks to implement.

“When I was in charge at Falkirk I had to reduce the budget by 75% and at Coventry over a two year period it was 60%.

“Slowly but surely we can change the players’ mindset to the way we want to play, and that’s no detraction on what Graham has done.

“These are challenging and difficult situations, but here I come into a Club where there does not require a reduction.

“Every manager has a different philosophy and a way of doing things, and Graham’s philosophy is slightly to different to mine and mine is different to somebody else.

“The budget is tight and there isn’t a great deal of flexibility in it at this moment in time, but reducing is not the priority and that was very important.

“The important thing is over the last four or months, I’ve spent time analysing and looking over the initial five years I’d been a football manager. “It’s been the best period of my times so far and I think I’ve benefited from it immensely. I’ve come back in far better shape. “When you leave a club and leave it under the circumstances I did, it’s very easy to lay blame elsewhere but it’s very important to look at yourself. “I spent time with my assistant looking over the many notes that we’d taken and analysed many of the situations we were subjected to. 10 Print Partner

“There were a number of jobs that came up and I was contacted about several jobs during my time out. The timing of them weren’t right.” The former Scottish international feels his ambition matches that of chairman Andy Pilley’s, and believes this is the right move for him. “I certainly feel this Club is definitely the right fit for me and I’m very looking forward to working with an ambitious chairman. “Fleetwood is a remarkable story but the great thing for me is that it does stand on its on two feet. We have to be shrewd within the transfer market. “We haven’t the shrewdest of budgets in the

“I think the five years prior to this have been a great apprenticeship to myself. I didn’t want to go into a club where again I had to address this situation. “I like to play a very attractive brand of football by I also understand you have to win games. At times you have to find a way to win. “I’m hugely honoured to manger of this football club, and the one thing I can guarantee is I will be relentless in my pursuit to take it forward. “Anybody who knows me knows how intense I am. I am an absolute workaholic and I will work tirelessly with my players to improve them. “Over the next few days we’ll drip feed certain

“Graham is a terrific person and someone I know very well. He’s left great foundations for me as the next manager to try and move it on again.”
