› Attention turns to the Capital One Cup this evening as we entertain Sky Bet League Two side Hartlepool United at Highbury Stadium. We were all delighted that the Football League season returned last weekend, and we were treated to an entertaining game against Southend United.
BES Utilities The power behind the Lights and your business
Declan McManus got his Town career off to the best possible start with a strike worthy of a goal of the season contender. A number of youngsters made their debuts in English football on Saturday, and they seem to have all gelled into the group which is pleasing. If we were to beat Hartlepool tonight, it would mean progression into the second round of this competition for the first time in our history. Previous results over the past three seasons have seen us lose narrowly to Nottingham Forest, Notts County and Rotherham United, so hopefully things will change tonight. We hope you all enjoy the game.

GrahamAlexander › Good evening and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for tonight’s Capital One Cup match against Hartlepool United. I would like to wish everyone from Hartlepool United a safe trip back home after tonight’s match.
undoubtedly provide the performance level needed to win games over the full season.
Tonight’s game is our first cup game of the season and one which we are looking to win as much as Saturday’s first league game.
I don’t usually talk about individuals but I’d like to say how good it was to see Jamille finally starting for us in League One after such a long time out. He’s been extremely unfortunate with injury over the last 18 months and the work he has put in with Luke Bussey to get back has been very demanding but he’s shown everybody the fighting spirit needed to overcome those setbacks.
The season is now under way and after all the hard work of pre-season it was good to get our first point on the board with a positive performance. Southend United were always going to be tough opponents after their success of last season but we felt we did enough to win the game. After a superb strike from Dec on his debut we had a couple of other good opportunities which if taken would have given us the cushion of a two goal lead but unfortunately we had to settle for the point. But our experience tells us it’s always good to take at least a point on the opening day and nothing is ever decided so early on. Overall I was very happy with how the players performed especially considering we had six debutants and four players playing their first game at this level. It takes time for a team to truly get to know each other and the division, but the early signs have been very encouraging for me. The players have an excellent work ethic both in games and training and between them a lot of skill and ability which will
He will need our patience and support to get back to the player we know he is but I know the staff and players are glad to see him back. As with any player who goes through tough times or are new to the Club, it’s important for them to know they have the full backing of those around them and we will always defend our players from anything negative from outside the group. We look after our own here and that will never change. Give your team your full support tonight and enjoy the game.

› Good evening and welcome back to Highbury as we begin our journey in this season’s Capital One Cup competition with a home tie against Hartlepool United. We wish Ronnie Moore’s side and their supporters a safe trip back up to the North East after the game, and hope they enjoy their evening on the Fylde Coast. The Capital One Cup hasn’t been the kindest of competitions to the Cod Army in recent seasons, as we’ve bowed out at the first round stage for the past three campaigns. Tough draws away at Nottingham Forest, Notts County and Rotherham United respectively have all ended our chances of progressing to the second round for the first time in our history. Tonight is the first time we will have faced opposition from a lower level, but we’re obviously not going to take them for granted. The Pools have improved vastly under experienced manager Ronnie Moore, and will pose a real threat to us over the 90 minutes. Having said that, tonight is a good opportunity for us to progress in this competition, but we must be wary that Hartlepool will be up for the challenge. An incentive for us is that some of the bigger clubs come into this competition at the second round stage, so we must take that into consideration too. Last season when we lost in extra-time away at Rotherham
United, they ended up drawing Barclays Premier League side Swansea City in the next round. The Pools finished last season strongly after being tipped to go down, and started the season well on Saturday with a win against Morecambe. They’ll take a lot of confidence from beating the Shrimps at the weekend, and will no doubt be looking to make it two wins out of two tonight. For ourselves, I thought Saturday’s game against Southend was a good one, and that the turning point in the match came when Dec McManus hit the bar early into the second half. If we’d have scored that and extended our advantage to a couple of goals then I think we’d have gone on to win the game quite comfortably. It wasn’t to be though and Southend kept on pushing and got slightly fortunate with their goal after a good save from Chris Maxwell in the first place. All the new lads have been welcomed into the group and have trained ever so hard, and didn’t look out of place at all on Saturday. Dec has obviously got quality and his goal summed it up, and he’s been brought to the Club to score goals so hopefully he
will continue his form.
for more information and prices.
After tonight’s cup tie, we turn out attentions back to League competition as we travel to Oldham Athletic and Bury in the space of a few days. Oldham are established at this level and beat us twice last season. They were awarded a somewhat dubious penalty at their place to win the game which we felt hard done by. We’ll be looking to put that right when we head there on Saturday, so hopefully we’ll bring the three points back with us to the Fylde Coast. The game against newly promoted Bury will be another test, as they’ve made some good signings over the summer so it should be an interesting game. We must concentrate on tonight’s fixture first and foremost though, and fingers crossed we’ll be in the hat for the next round come 9.30pm. Enjoy the game,
Pondy

Communitytrust › Six members of Town’s first team squad visited the Community Trust’s summer sports camps at Fleetwood High School last week.
Are you aged between 16-18 and just left school? If so, come and sample the delights of what futsal has to offer.
Amari’i Bell, Chris Maxwell, Jamille Matt, Keano Deacon, Lyle Della-Verde and Nick Haughton were all present and enjoyed a fantastic visit.
The pre-season camps run every day from 1.30-4.30pm at the Club’s new training ground at Poolfoot Farm. Run by our very own qualified coaches, individuals work on fitness, technique and tactics, whilst also performing specifically designed strength and conditioning sessions.
The Trust’s sports camps will run throughout the month of August, and young children from the local area are all invited to come along.
A free bus runs from Highbury Stadium on a daily basis at 1.15pm.
Over 70 children have attended the sports camps so far, as they continue to go from strength to strength. Community co-ordinator Mike Lee said: “We had a good first event down at Fleetwood High School, with six first team players present at our sports camps. “Four of the lads went together and spoke to the younger
ones, while Chris and Jamille went with the big group of 50 associated with the community project.

Welcomehartlepool utd › Hartlepool United visit Highbury Stadium for tonight’s Capital One Cup first round one clash against Graham Alexander’s Fleetwood Town. After finding themselves ten points adrift in bottom place during the Sky Bet League Two campaign last season, the decision by Pools’ owners to appoint manager Ronnie Moore last December proved to be a critical one. A turn in fortune after winning four games on the bounce saw them escape the relegation places and secure survival on the penultimate weekend of the season. Former Rotherham and Tranmere boss Moore will hope that the
major summer overhaul of his squad can ensure that there is no repeat of last season’s dice with relegation. Recruitments have been made particularly in the forward line, with strikers Billy Paynter, Rhys Oates and Rakish Bingham being brought in. Liverpool born Paynter negotiated a move to Victoria Park from League Two rivals Carlisle United and will now work under fellow Liverpudlian Moore, who has appointed him as the new club captain. Oates penned an undisclosed contract following his release from League One side Barnsley, and despite making 10 appearances for the Reds, spent much of the campaign on loan at Chester and Grimsby respectively. Moore also wasted little time in signing former Wigan and Mansfield Town striker Bingham, who left the Stags to re-join Hartlepool after his loan spell, where he played five times and scored once.
Newcastle born Bartlett made 138 appearances during a three-year stint with his previous club Gateshead, and 23- year old defender Carroll signed as a free agent after being released by Huddersfield Town at the end of last season. Striker Marlon Harewood, midfielders Tommy Miller and Jack Crompton, goalkeeper Jonathan Maxted and defender Darren Holden have all departed Victoria Park. Hartlepool’s League Cup campaign ended prematurely last season after a 6-2 away defeat against Port Vale in the first round.
Other incomers to add to that list include goalkeeper Adam Bartlett and left-back Jake Carroll.

Star man:Billy Paynter › Striker Billy Paynter became one of Pools’ summer signings after joining from Carlisle United in June 2015. The 31 year-old was born in Liverpool on the 13th July 1984 and began his career at Port Vale, signing a professional contract with the club in the year 2000. At the age of 16 years and 295 days old, he became the youngest Vale player for 20 years to make his first team debut under manager Brian Horton. During the 2001/02 campaign he went on to play seven further second division games and became the club’s youngest goalscorer for 24 years after bagging his first senior goal against Notts County on the 17th September 2002. He scored five goals in 34 appearances that season and at the tender age of 17, and hit 14 goals in 48 matches the following season, finishing only second to Stephen McPhee in the clubs scoring charts. After being rewarded with a long-term contract, he became the club’s top scorer during the 2004/05 season, netting 13 goals in 50 games and was voted as the club’s player of the year. His form attracted the interest of a number of clubs, and Paynter moved on loan to Championship side Hull City in 2005 to team up with Peter Taylor. The move later became permanent when the two clubs agreed an initial free of £150,000 in the January transfer window. Despite his primary position of a striker, he also played for
12 Print Partner
the Tigers as a right midfielder and scored three times in 23 appearances before moving to Southend United. Paynter scored his first and what turned out to be his only goal for the Shrimpers during a 3-2 League Cup victory against Brighton in 2006. After being loaned out to Bradford City for a month, he scored a last minute equalizer to earn the Bantams a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forrest. The Liverpudlian then played fifteen matches for Bradford after a loan extension, scoring on four occasions. His next venture was at Swindon Town in 2007 where he formed a formidable strike partnership with Charlie Austin. During the 2009/10 season, a total number of 49 goals were scored between the two Englishmen, marking his best goal scoring ratio in a single season with 29. Paynter soon joined newly promoted Leeds United in June 2010 and went on to play for both Doncaster Rovers and Carlisle United, however he picked up an injury at Elland Road which halted his goalscoring form. He starts the 2015/16 season as captain of Hartlepool United under manager and fellow Liverpudlian Ronnie Moore.
Three of thebest › We take a look at three of the Pools’ stars who will one’s to watch this evening at Highbury.
Trevor Carson
Goalkeeper Trevor Carson became Ronnie Moore’s sixth signing of the 2015 summer when he arrived from Cheltenham Town.
The Northern Ireland international still had a year to run on his contract at Whaddon Road but Moore was determined to land his man and struck a deal with The Robins.
The former Chelsea starlet was one of Town’s key players during 2014/15 as they finished third in the Conference last season only to be beaten by Bristol Rovers in the Play-Off Final. Comfortable in either full-back role or in the centre of defence, Magnay picked up no fewer than six awards at the end of last term, including the Supporters’ Player of the Year prize.
Voted Town’s Player of the Year for 2014/15, Carson was thrilled to seal a move back to the north-east after spending six years at Sunderland whom he joined as a sixteen-year-old.
Born in Gateshead, he spent two-and-a-half years with his hometown club before leaving to join Grimsby in the summer of 2014.
During his time at the Stadium of Light, the agile shot-stopper built his senior experience with loan moves to Chesterfield, Lincoln City, Brentford, Bury and Hull City.
Magnay came through the ranks at Leeds United’s Academy and, following his release, found an unusual route back in to the professional game when he won the second series of Sky One’s Football Icon show to earn a deal at Chelsea in 2007.
In 2012 he was released by The Black Cats and was quickly snapped up by Bury on a permanent deal and subsequently also starred during an extended loan stay at Portsmouth. Carson joined Cheltenham for the start of the 2014/15 campaign but, despite a series of heroic performances, he couldn’t stop them slipping in to the Conference.
Carl Magnay
Highly-rated defender Carl Magnay left Grimsby Town to sign for Pools during the summer of 2015 after a very successful season for The Mariners.
He spent five years on the books at Stamford Bridge during which he gained senior experience through loan spells at MK Dons and Northampton Town, while also gaining international recognition for Northern Ireland Under-21s in 2009. A serious knee injury brought an end to his time at Chelsea but he made a swift recovery and a successful trial earned him a contract at Gateshead in January 2012. His form for Grimsby last term means he had no shortage of admirers during the summer but Pools boss Ronnie Moore
moved swiftly and decisively to win his signature in early June 2015.
Michael Woods
The talented midfielder signed a deal with Pools at the beginning of the 2014/15 campaign after enjoying a successful pre-season trial. Woods began his career with Leeds United before being lured away by Chelsea in 2006 where he went on to spend time in the Reserves before making his Blues First Team debut against Macclesfield Town in January 2007. The former England Youth international moved on loan to Notts County in November 2010 before having short stints with Yeovil Town in 2011 and Doncaster Rovers in 2012. A spell in non-league football with Harrogate Town helped Woods re-ignite his love for the game and, after earning a deal with Pools, he made his debut in the Capital One Cup game against Port Vale in August 2014. After that he was in and out of the side until the turn of the year when he enjoyed a run of games in the starting eleven and emerged as one of the key creative sparks under Ronnie Moore. However, his great run of form was cruelly interrupted when he suffered a season-ending dislocated ankle and fractured fibula during the game against AFC Wimbledon in February 2014.

A new era for Town’syouth team set up › Fleetwood Town’s recently appointed youth team coaches, Nathan Rooney and Daniel Gregson, spoke of their delight about their new roles with the Fylde Coast club. Rooney and Gregson replaced Craig Madden and Mark Bowley, who left their positions with the Cod Army at the end of the 2014/15 season. The pair enjoyed time with their new squad in Austria during pre-season, and put the young Codlings through their paces alongside Barry Nicholson’s Development squad. Rooney revealed that he is relishing the opportunity to manage the Club’s youth squad on a day-to-day basis. He said: “I’m over the moon, it is a fantastic opportunity. It all came really quick, and I’m glad that we’re at the final hurdle now and ready to go for pre-season. “The family of Fleetwood are fantastic, the staff are very welcoming, there’s always a smile on everyone’s face and it always puts you in the right mood for the job. “The lads want to be motivated, they want to see people demonstrating things rather than just demanding things. “It is about mirroring what the first-team do, and to get heads together making sure all the lads come out on top. “We know the plan, there are targets to hit and the staff around me and the staff around Dan have all got good track records in our expertise. Rooney also stated that he hopes the youth squad can work
closer with the Club’s first team, and has already spoken with Graham Alexander about his plans for the forthcoming seasons. “It is about that pathway and bridging the gaps nice and early. If the lads know what they are doing three years prior to the first-team, they won’t have a problem when they step out onto the pitch at Highbury. “The gaffer has already told me his plans and told me the way he wants them to play. He’s given me the freelance to go ahead and develop the lads as a group of players and a group of staff.”
and the youth lads, to bring them all together is going to be massive. “It will be massive for the community as well. I am going to play a major role in coaching the younger kids as well as the youth team. “This training facility is going to inspire them to become professional footballers, and what better team to play for than their home team. “In the modern game, the prices of players have become so expensive it becomes difficult to pluck the best players out from different clubs, so the best way to get the best players is to develop them.”
Rooney’s assistant, Daniel Gregson, is also looking forward to the challenge ahead having previously plied his trade in the game with Stockport County and Weston Super Mare. “I’ll hope to bring a lot of enthusiasm as I’ve been playing the game to a decent standard since I was a young lad. “There are a lot of coaches out there who have had a long coaching career, come out of the game and do very well. “I’m starting my career as a coach a lot earlier, but I still think I’ve got experience and expertise, and with the help of Nathan who is obviously a really experienced coach, we’ll do a great job with the lads. “For the Club as a whole, the first team, development squad
