› Good evening and welcome to Highbury for tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern area semi-final clash against Morecambe. Because of both sides’ exclusion from the FA Cup, neither of the teams were in action last weekend so there should certainly be a freshness tonight.

Our last result against Blackpool was disappointing but in reflection it is a game that the minimum our performance deserved was a draw.

Morecambe have been under the stewardship of Jim Bentley now for over four years, and during that time he has done a terrific job. Four years at one club as a modern day manager is considered a lifetime!

We must respond to this setback in the right manner and must take confidence from the fact that we have won our last three home games.

I must stress again tonight the importance of this game because it is for clubs like ourselves and Morecambe realistically our greatest opportunity to win a cup competition. It is a huge incentive to potentially play at Wembley, our supporters and several players have fond recent memories of playing there.

The players have responded extremely well to the strenuous demands that we put on them, and I am seeing on the whole improvements in our performances. In recent games we have played with great intensity and purpose, and are also beginning to demonstrate the ability to control games. However, there are still big improvements that we must strive to make. The Club were disappointed to hear that David “Ballon D’Or” Ball missed out on the FIFA Puskas goal of the year for 2015. My question is, did the voters take into consideration the 100 mile an hour winds that were present at Highbury, and not so evident at the Nou Camp?! Enjoy the game,

Steven 2

IntroducingMorecambe › Near neighbours Morecambe make the short trip to Highbury this evening for a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy semi-final clash against Town. The Shrimps have performed impressively in this season’s competition, and have defeated three Sky Bet League One sides on their way to the last four of the northern section. Jim Bentley’s men saw off the challenge of high-flying Walsall in the first round as second half goals from Jamie Devitt and Tom Barkhuizen secured their passage. A trip to Bury awaited the Lancashire outfit in the second round, and they continued their good run with a narrow win courtesy of Shaun Miller’s late goal. It was a victory that set up another trip to Greater Manchester in the area quarter-final, this time to Rochdale’s Spotland to face Keith Hill’s outfit.

Did you know? Morecambe’s mascot, Christie the Cat, was named after their old Stadium, Christie Park. 4

And Bentley’s side were victorious once more on their travels, as an early Paul Mullin effort in the 17th minute was all that separated the two teams. The Cod Army were given a bye into the second round of this year’s competition having finished in the top 10 in the third tier last season.

In the area quarter-final, the Cod Army welcomed Nigel Adkins’ Sheffield United to the Fylde Coast in what was to be a nervy encounter. The game went to a penalty shootout after neither side could find the net in 90 minutes, and Nick Haughton netted the decisive spot kick to send his side through. Welsh shot stopper Chris Maxwell performed heroics between the sticks, expertly saving two Blades penalties as he helped Town progress.

This meant they entertained Shrewsbury Town at Highbury after the Shropshire side had beaten Oldham Athletic at the Greenhous Meadow in the first stage.

Despite the Shrimps’ good form in this year’s competition, their results in the league have been inconsistent as they sit in 13th position.

Despite going behind midway through the first half to former Town midfielder Junior Brown’s stunning strike, the Cod Army replied in the second half through Ash Hunter and Bobby Grant.

Last Tuesday night’s narrow 1-0 win at home to Dagenham and Redbridge was their first league victory since October 20th, which moved them up four places in the standings.

The pair came off the bench to make an impact, and Grant, who spent last campaign on-loan with Salop, crashed a sublime effort into the top corner in the dying moments.

VARDY: The start of things to come › Former Town striker Jamie Vardy gave an exclusive interview to the Club’s media team recently about his successful period at Highbury. The Barclays Premier League top scorer, who beat Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record of netting in 11 consecutive games against Manchester United last weekend, has been the standout player in the top flight this term. He joined Leicester City from the Cod Army for £1million three seasons ago, and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the country’s most lethal strikers. Vardy’s club form was rewarded in June 2015 by a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions side, and he made his debut as a substitute against the Republic of Ireland. He said: “My time at Fleetwood was the start of things to come for me and the Club, because they’re enjoying life in League One now. “Promotions through the divisions was something I always expected the Club to achieve, and obviously that’s what chairman Andy Pilley wanted as well. “As soon as we finish our games on a Saturday we get the scores up on the big screens and I always check for Fleetwood’s results. “I like to look out for how my old teams are

doing, and still keep in touch with some of the lads who were at Fleetwood when I was there.”

just dreams of, and luckily ever since that day I’ve been in every other squad.”

While Vardy has earned deserved recognition from football supporters far and wide in recent months, he has been quick to heap praise on his Leicester teammates. “I’m in a good team which is always helpful as it’s the players who get me into good positions so I have the chances to score goals. “I’ve obviously been delighted with my start to the season on a personal level, but I also know that it’s going to take hard work to keep it up.” His 14 league goals so far during this campaign has seen him make his mark on the international stage, something he admits he cherishes after making his bow earlier this year. “I can’t describe what it feels like to pull on an England shirt. Nicholson: A brilliant learning curve for me › Development squad manager Barry Nicholson says his involvement with the first team set-up at Highbury in recent weeks has been a great learning experience. Nicholson was appointed as the development boss at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, in what was to be his first managerial position since hanging up his boots. He has been the catalyst in bringing through the likes of Nick Haughton, Tyler Forbes, Ash Hunter and Jack Sowerby, who have all progressed through his squad. The Scotsman however now travels home and away with Steven Pressley’s side, and admits he has thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. In an interview with #codarmy, the Club’s official match day

programme, Nicholson gives an update on his squad and his new role. He said: “It’s been a little bit of a difficult time for the younger lads over the past six to seven weeks with the appointment of the new manager. “He’s come in though and integrated the development squad with the first team quite a bit to be fair, and has watched all of the games. “He’s had a good look at the lads in training so they’ve all had a great chance to try and impress him. They’re all really enjoying it. “Although the last two or three results haven’t been good for the squad, performance levels have still been pretty good. “As usual, we’re just trying to push these young lads as much as we can, and make sure they make the step up into the first team. “The manager always asks for two or three of the boys to train with his group, so

8

my job is to make sure the boys are ready for that level. “He’s been pretty pleased with what he’s seen so far, and we’ve just got to try and keep pushing them as much as we can. “The training is at a really high tempo and standard at the moment, so the lads are trying to get up to speed so they don’t let themselves down.” Despite extra first team responsibilities, Nicholson’s aim however is still very much to push as many young players through as possible. “On first team match days I now go home and away with the players, where as before I didn’t go to the away games at all. “The new manager has come in and said right away that he wants me to be with the team home and away. “It’s been excellent so far and I’m really enjoying it. Obviously the big thing for me though is getting the younger lads pushed through. “The things that go on at first team level are the most important at the moment, and

whatever they want they get. “But the development side of it is still really an important part and we need to keep pushing it as much as we can. “Eventually I want to be a manager or a coach at a first team level, but right now this role for me is a brilliant learning curve in my career. “The manager having me so involved on a daily basis is brilliant, and every coach I’ve worked under as a player I’ve always tried to pick up things. “Graham obviously gave me a great chance in my first coaching role and picked up loads of stuff from him.

“I’m now picking up lots of other stuff up from the manager now, so every day I just try and keep learning as much as I can.” Nicholson has been impressed with Pressley since his arrival, and believes the players are all buying into his new ideas. “I think Graham and the gaffer are pretty similar in the way they go about things. There is just a higher intensity to training now. “It’s really, really competitive and it’s starting to rub off on the players. The players all look comfortable at what he’s asking them to do.

you’ve got to give it everything.

“He plays a certain system on the pitch which allows the top three players to go and try and win games for us.

The former Cod Army midfielder is hoping Town can put the disappointment of the recent derby against Blackpool behind them, when they welcome the Shrimps to Highbury this evening.

“It’d be great for the Club and more importantly great for the supporters to get to Wembley once again.

“The other players in the team work exceptionally hard to try and create chances for the strikers, so it’s a system everyone has bought into.

“It gets exciting when you get to the latter stages of this competition. If you can get through the semi-finals then you’re only a couple of games from Wembley.

“We’ve seen some really good performances in recent weeks, and with a little bit more luck we probably would have had a few more

“But Morecambe will be thinking the same though and will fancy their chances with only four teams left in the competition.”

“All the players want to do well so it’s a really good chance for us. Not many players get to play at Wembley so when you’re that close Print Partner

Pulled it on in thepast › Fleetwood Town and Morecambe renew a local rivalry this evening in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, and two players who featured in the Cod Army’s recent history return for the Shrimps. The defensive pair of Alan Goodall and Shaun Beeley both played pivotal parts in Fleetwood’s rise into the Football League. We take a closer look at the duo, focusing on their careers at and away from the Fylde Coast, with both set to play a part for Jim Bentley’s side in tonight’s anticipated cup fixture. Birkenhead-born Goodall spent four memorable years at Fleetwood, however prior to his move to Town in 2011, he started his career just over the border at Welsh outfit Bangor City where he turned out 91 times before signing for Rochdale in 2004.

During a three-year stay at Spotland, Goodall played 120 times and spent further spells at Luton Town, Chesterfield, Newport County and Stockport County. In June 2011, he signed for then non-league Fleetwood, winning silverware in his inaugural season at Highbury, and helping Micky Mellon’s side to the 2011/12 Conference Premier title, making 34 appearances in a historic campaign. Following promotion from the fifth-tier of English football, Goodall made a further 31 appearances in Fleetwood’s first term in League Two, before witnessing another promotion the following season as he played in the Play-Off final victory over Burton Albion in May 2014. At the end of a season which saw the centre-back loaned out to Grimsby Town, the 34-year-old linked up with Morecambe at the Globe Arena. Goodall returns for

tonight’s game under the floodlights having made 21 appearances for Morecambe so far this season. Another player who has played in the colours of both sides is fellow defender Beeley, who too will be returning to a club where he tasted prolonged success. The Stockport-native began his career within the youth side at Oldham Athletic, and then joined Conference National side Southport in 2007 as he made the jump into senior football. After just two games for Southport, Beeley signed for Fleetwood Town in November 2007 when they were plying their trade in the Northern Premier League. Beeley was part of the Town squad which enjoyed numerous promotions, and tasted success immediately when the Cod Army gained promotion to the Conference North in 2008. A further three promotions would follow, culminating in Town achieving Football League status in 2012.

In that time, the 27-year-old was loaned to Salford and Bury, before leaving Fleetwood permanently in January 2014 for Morecambe. Whilst with the Shrimps, he has made 69 appearances for the League Two side.

had a lot of draws in our fixtures which shows we’re defending quite well.

The young Cod Army have picked up some impressive results over the past few months, and are enjoying a fine league campaign.

earn professional contracts at the end of the season, with five months of the season remaining.

“We’re not putting the ball in the net like we were at the start, so that is our main focus now as time goes on.

Rooney has seen the likes of Andy Smith, Nathan Sheron, Michael Tetteh, Jordan Hancox, Louis Myers and Mamadou Djabi all make appearances for Barry Nicholson’s development squad.

The boss gave an update to the Club’s matchday programme on how things have been going over the past few weeks, and insists the squad must focus on the task.

“Overall we thought we were going to have a better youth cup run. We felt we had enough quality for that but unfortunately it just didn’t pan out for us.

He said: “The last few weeks we’ve had a mixture of youth cup and league games. We’ve

“The talk at the start of the season was about our strikers and how they’ve been putting the ball in the back of the net.

And he is hoping to see as many of his players

“We started with some excitement in pre-season and that grew into the season by winning three out of the first four. “I’m now looking at some of the lads in the team who can step up, because I don’t want us

to just rely on certain players. “I do have to congratulate the lads on how they’ve taken the new information and ideas on board though. They’ve done ever so well. “I feel we’re doing a great job with the amount of staff we’ve got in the youth set-up. There’s only really two or three of us at it every single day. “The players have bought into the ideas early on but then also I’ve taken a new point of view with the new manager coming in. “The lads enjoy my company and I enjoy their company, and that’s the most important part because it’s about getting to know your players. “It’s a long season and the young lads aren’t always going to be at the top of their games. The message is though if you’re not at the top of your game don’t show any disappointment. “The training has now changed so we can get the second years their contracts, and some of them are doing well and impressing the staff. “It’s an individual programme at the end of the day and not a collective one. If they can work well as a team then they’ll bring the best out of themselves individually.”
