Good evening and welcome to tonight’s game as we welcome Graham Westley’s Peterborough United side to Highbury for a rearranged Sky Bet League One fixture. I’m expecting an open and expensive game of football tonight. It’s been no secret since Graham’s gone there that part of his remit is to play attacking football.
It’ll certainly enhance their confidence but like any game we have to put a real focus on what we can do, and we’ll be doing that tonight.
If you look at the results since he’s been there then that’s been the case, so they’re a side who will come here and attack.
They’re the league’s top goalscorers but their slump also coincided with losing their main striker Conor Washington to QPR.
In terms of our defensive strategy we have to be spot on, but on the flip side as well we’re an attacking team so it’ll make for an interesting game.
That’s going to have an impact on any group, but they seem to have found the solutions in recent games and are looking like the team from the early part of the season again.
They’ve turned the corner recently and had a very good result against Coventry as well as winning at Doncaster too, so they’ve had a couple of good results.
It’s a really important game for us. We’re at a crucial part of the season now and know if we win these fixtures between now and the end of season we’ll stay up. That has to be our focus and the players must head into every game wanting to win. We have to ensure our league status. hope you all enjoy the game,
Steven

Peterborough United are tonight’s visitors to Highbury Stadium for a re-arranged Sky Bet League One fixture against Fleetwood Town. The Posh make the journey up to the Fylde Coast from Cambridgeshire currently residing in 14th position within the third-tier standings, in a comfortable midtable position. Having notched up two straight victories over the Easter period, the London Road outfit will be hoping that they can subsequently see out the rest of the campaign in a positive fashion, starting by claiming maximum points in on a spring evening in west Lancashire. Manager Graham Westley took over the helm

at Peterborough in September 2015 – replacing Dave Robertson in the dugout. During a playing career which spanned 12 years, the Hounslow native started out on the books at Queens Park Rangers as an apprentice in 1982, where he spent fouryears at Loftus Road before moving to Gillingham in March 1986. Brief spells in league football with the Gills, Barnet and Wycombe Wanderers followed for Westley, prior to spending the rest of his career in non-league football, spending time with Kingstonian, Wealdstone, Enfield and Walton and Hershem, where he hung up his boots in 1994. Westley then decided to move into the managerial side of the game, having stints in charge at Kingstonian, Enfield and Farnborough Town, with a move to then conference side, Stevenage next on his agenda in January 2003 which would be his first of three spells at the Hertfordshire club.
Westley’s inaugural spell at Stevenage lasted just over three years, but after a short spell in the managerial role at Rushden and Diamonds, he was back at Broadhall Way in May 2008. In three-and-a-half years at the Boro, Westley won the FA Trophy in 2009, which was followed by promotion to the Football League in 2010 – he oversaw promotion to League One via the Play-Offs in May 2011. Preston North End came calling for Westley’s services, and he was appointed as the manager at Deepdale in January 2012, lasting just over a year at the Lilywhites before departing from his position in February 2013. After being out of work for a month, Westley returned to Stevenage in March 2013, where he spent 26 months back at the club for a third spell. Having left at the conclusion of the 2014/15 League Two campaign, the 48-year-old was back in a job in September last year when Darragh MacAnthony appointed him as the new Peterborough United manager.

Attacker Marcus Maddison is the Posh’s leading goalscorer this term after striker Conor Washington’s departure to QPR in January. The Durham born player has netted 11 goals in all competitions from an advanced position, and has been a key player for Graham Westley’s side this term. He started his career with Newcastle United but was released in 2013, and joined Scottish outfit St Johnstone but failed to make a single appearance. His form was rediscovered with Gateshead and his performances in the North East prompted Posh to make a move for him in August 2014.

Communitytrust Fleetwood Town Community Trust’s Football Education Programme will be holding an open evening at Poolfoot Farm on Thursday 7th April at 6.30pm. The evening is aimed at current year 11’s in local schools as well as parents, and is the perfect opportunity to view the state of the art educational facilities where students will learn and progress. Students and parents will gain a flavour of the educational and sporting facilities available which will contribute to their studies over the course of the two year programme. Once completed, students will leave the programme with a Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport, the equivalent of up to three A Levels. Other opportunities available to students will be practical work experience linked to the football club as well as an FA Level 1 coaching qualification.
BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport, the equivalent of up to three A Levels which could then potentially lead students to university, a scholarship abroad or a job within the sporting sector. As well as studying in the classrooms at the Club’s new £8 million training complex, the students will have access to the training facilities to continue their development. All of the students will be provided with different work experience opportunities throughout their two years in a sporting field that they are interested. For example in our current cohort we have students that are shadowing our first team physiotherapist staff and learning what this job entails. To confirm your attendance at these sessions please let Joseph Newson know on 01253 775080 ext.3 or via email on joseph. newson@fleetwoodtownfc.com.

McLaughlin focused on picking up points Town right back is solely focused on picking up enough points to keep the Cod Army in the third tier after returning from international duty with Northern Ireland. McLaughlin started for the Irish against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium recently, and came on as a second half substitute in a win over Slovenia. He looks set to be named in Michael O’Neill’s 23 man squad for this summer’s European Championships, and is relishing the challenge. However, he admits his main focus between now and the end of the season is to help Fleetwood climb away from the lower reaches of the league table. He said: “It was a great week away with the Northern Ireland squad. We ended up breaking the record for the country’s longest unbeaten run so it keeps out momentum going. “It was another good experience for me starting against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium, as it gave me the opportunity to play against Premier League and Championship players. “It was a good test for myself and the team and I really enjoyed it. It was just unfortunate 8

that we didn’t come away with a win as we conceded a last minute penalty. “Obviously they were missing Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale but they gave Holland a good game before that without those two, so knew it was going to be tough. “We then beat Slovenia who are a similar team to Ukraine who we’ll be playing against in the Euro’s, so it was exactly the sort of game we needed. “They actually played Ukraine in the PlayOffs and lost narrowly, but were a good team on the ball and looked quite sharp. “They didn’t really threaten us though and never looked like scoring. I was happy for Conor Washington who managed to score his first goal for us.” The Cod Army have seven Sky Bet League One fixtures remaining, and will be hoping for revenge against the Posh this evening having lost narrowly at London Road in November.
“I listened to the game against Chesterfield in my room when I was away, and it seemed like a tight game which on another day we could have won. “Every point at the moment is massive for us between now and the end of the season, and hopefully we can continue to pick up points.
“Now is the time we all have to step up because judging by our position we haven’t been good enough. We’ve played welling stages but haven’t put enough points on the board.”

club announce intention to developacademy Fleetwood Town’s brand new Poolfoot Farm training ground and community sport development in Thornton has opened its doors to the public. To coincide with the completion of the state of the art £8 million facility, the Club have announced their intention to further develop their youth academy. Under the governance of the professional game’s ‘Elite Player Performance Programme’ (EPPP), the Club presently operate a Category 4 academy, providing for elite development for age groups U17 through to U21. The potential roll out, which is currently under discussion with the Football League, could possibly see the Club move to a Category 3 status as early as next season, which would see elite level coaching operations at Poolfoot Farm from age 8 upwards.
CEO Steve Curwood said: “Our youth development and infrastructure has been growing rapidly year on year and we have been working with younger age groups for two seasons now and have already made successful inroads with these younger age group coaching programmes. “This work has seen scholarships offered for next season to some of those locally based players already in that coaching system. “With the outstanding community and Club training facility now almost complete, and with many aspects of what is required to operate a Category 3 academy already in place, for a Club of our size it is the next essential stage of our development if we are to compete at the highest level possible.
“This will not only ensure we are fully protected by our investment in players at all age groups from U9 upwards, but will allow us to develop our own true philosophy, style and strategy in producing our own players from a young age. “We want to consider a predominantly Fylde Coast focus to the academy, where we feel opportunities for a greater level of development time, commitment and loyalty can be achieved, also allowing improved focus and engagement with grassroots clubs and schools, with whom we are already working or are familiar.
“It is difficult enough for parents with all the homework and the other day to day commitments that boys and families have to contend with, without also having to arrange several trips a week to other parts of the county to football clubs with whom they have no real knowledge or affinity. We all firmly believe this can be achieved.
“It may sound a twee notion to create more local professional footballers, but we truly believe this can be achieved with the right focus.
“Working with locally based players also allows us to give them other opportunities around the Club, regardless of whether or not they make the progress in to the professional game.
“Poolfoot will be a fantastic hub to bring those players through, with the first team here on site, along with the community users. It is also a place with facilities that academy players’ parents can also enjoy and one where they can relax.
“This may be in community coaching, working at Poolfoot, match day roles, or working in our partnership programmes both locally and overseas.
