GrahamAlexander › Good afternoon and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for today’s Sky Bet League One match against Port Vale. I would like to extend our welcome to the staff, players, officials and supporters at Port Vale and wish them all a safe journey home after today’s game. Last week we made the short trip to Wigan for our first ever league game there. Over the course of the game we didn’t do enough to win and we left disappointed at our performance. It was a game we felt we could get a positive result from but after having a certain penalty turned down we conceded two poor goals from our perspective. The players showed a great desire to try and get back into it and after getting a goal back continued to search for the equaliser which we almost got when we hit the post in the final minute. We have a very honest group here though and we know we all could have done a lot better from the start. Our previous game here was certainly a tough, physical battle and I was very pleased to see the way the players responded to the challenge against a very strong and experienced Bradford team. We played some good football whenever we could but also stood up to everything thrown at us. It reminded me of the games from 15-20 years ago and the way both teams competed certainly gave the crowd real value for money. It was a good hard earned point.

Our squad has been really stretched over the last couple of weeks and hopefully we can welcome some players back into the fold but whenever this happens, I always believe it presents an opportunity for someone to grab their chance and stake a claim for a regular place. In the past we would have gone out and brought in a loan or two but these are now the times when we will show faith in the young players we have coming through. It is then down to them to show everyone what they can do and possibly kick-start their careers as first team players. They will of course need your loyal support as will everyone who pulls on a Fleetwood shirt. Get behind your team again today and enjoy the game.

Word from thechief executive › In the next stage of the exciting development with Uzbek club partner, Lokomotiv Tashkent, the Cod Army recently welcomed Sergey Prokhorov and Rustam Nartadjiev to the Club. Prokhorov and Nartadjiev are both members of Tashkent’s Under 21 side, and will spend three months at Highbury training with Barry Nicholson’s development squad.

Speaking ahead of their visit, Curwood said: “This is the next visible stage to the public of the relationship were forming with Lokomotiv Tashkent and our presence in Uzbekistan generally.

Town agreed a partnership with the Uzbekistan outfit in April 2015, as they identified Fleetwood as an ideal role model for one of Central Asia’s biggest football markets.

“A lot has been going on behind the scenes with regards the partnership, but this is the first visible sign that we can announce.

Since then, Chief Executive Steve Curwood and Technical Director Gretar Steinsson have both visited the country to learn about their culture.

“Sergey Prokhorov and Rustam Nartadjiev, two of their Under 21 players, have come over here for a three month stay.

Tashkent have recently invested extensively in its football facilities, and turned to the Cod Army to assist with their long-term development.

“Sergey is a centre half and Rustam is a goalkeeper, and they’re effectively coming over to experience England and British culture. “They will be training with Barry Nicholson’s development squad for a few months to experience a different style coaching, and a whole new environment.’’ “It’ll be completely alien to anything they’ve been used to, and hopefully Barry and the lads who are working around them will too get some different influences from their schooling.”

The Uzbek youngsters will not be able to feature in any of Town’s competitive fixtures, but plan is for them to experience practice matches. “Due to FIFA regulations the players can’t physically take part in organised competitive fixtures, but the relationship is about far more than that’’. “It’s about sharing ideas and principles, and understanding two different cultures of football as we work together to harness and share those ideas.

‘Both clubs do have a core strategy and a vision of what we’re trying to achieve from the partnership, which will come clear, however, sometimes the most exciting and fruitful part is about what you cannot see, and opportunities that arise while you are this sort of journey’

“The two players will stay at the chairman’s hotel accommodation in Blackpool, while three representatives from the club are also coming to meet ourselves again.

“In the meantime we’re looking forward to hosting two quality players who are currently playing at a competitive level in the Lokomotiv Tashkent Under 21 side.

“We’ll be talking with them about how we take things further from here, and there are some more exciting developments in the planning. “As we take this relationship further it will benefit both clubs, and in the forthcoming months we will have more to announce.

IntroducingPORT VALE › Port Vale make the trip north from Staffordshire for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture against the Cod Army at Highbury Stadium. The Valiants make the trip to the Fylde Coast having lost their previous encounter against Bury last Saturday, with Nathan Cameron heading home a late winner for the Shakers which left Vale 15th in the third-tier. From their eight matches so far this season, Vale have picked up nine points, which puts them level on with Town heading into today’s match against Graham Alexander’s side. Managed by Rob Page, the Welshman took over the managerial vacancy at Vale Park in October 2014 having been placed in caretaker charge the previous month following Micky Adams’ resignation. A defender in his playing days, Page started his career in the youth team at Watford, turning professional with the Hornets in 1993. In an eight-year spell at Vicarage Road, Page would go onto make 215 appearances whilst in Hertfordshire. In August 2001, he was loaned to Sheffield United and subsequently made the transfer to Bramall Lane permanent the following month for £300,000. 4

A total of 104 appearances would follow for Page in the Steel City during a threeyear period, with the Llywnypia native also spending a brief loan spell back in his homeland with Cardiff City during the 2004-2005 season. After his campaign with the Bluebirds at Ninian Park, Page spent a further three-years with Coventry City, turning out 70 times for the club. Page spent time at Huddersfield Town and Chesterfield later in his career, eventually retiring from the game with the Spireites in 2011 after making 475 appearances in club football, and representing the senior Wales side on 41 occasions. After hanging up his boots after 18-years of plying his trade in the Football League, Page linked up with Port Vale as youth team coach before being promoted to a first-team coach in May 2012. Page was again promoted to the role of Micky Adams’ assistant manager in the summer of 2014, and was

appointed first-team manager of the Staffordshire outfit last October with the side struggling at the foot of the League One table. The 41-year-old kept Vale in the third-tier at the end of last season, achieving an 18th place finish after defeat by Town on the final day of the campaign. The pre-season schedule was a real changing of the guard at Vale, with seven players departing the club, including top-scorer Tom Pope on a free-transfer to league-rivals Bury. A further eleven players signed on at Port Vale, with the likes of goalkeeper Jak Alnwick, AJ Leitch-Smith and Uche Ikpeazu just a few of the names who joined over the summer.

Ball had nodded into his path.

Fleetwood Town ended their 2014/15 Sky Bet League One campaign with a comfortable 2-1 victory over Port Vale in Staffordshire.

Striker Tom Pope did go close to reducing the arrears though when he headed narrowly over Chris Maxwell’s crossbar.

The Cod Army took the lead in the first half when Josh Morris volleyed home from 12 yards for his eighth goal of the campaign.

The Valiants improved and asked a few questions of the visiting rearguard, however the defence stood firm to keep out the home attack.

Captain Mark Roberts doubled the advantage on 26 minutes as he tapped in from close range after David

Pope saw a late shot come back off the bar, before Michael O’Connor pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time with a deflected effort.

Communitytrust › The Free Kicks Foundation was founded in 2007 and gained registered charity status later that year. Bases in Peterborough, it is run on a voluntary basis by Steve Thorpe and Sam Downing. The charity arranges for children and families who are going through tough times to have experiences at their favourite football club. They call these experiences ‘Kicks’. The charity buys mascot and hospitality packages at clubs across the United Kingdom and then starts searching for families to whom it can donate them. These children may be suffering with an illness or a disability, have experienced the loss of a family member or be dealing with other difficulties in their lives. Recently, the charity were delighted to be able to offer two young Burton Albion fans, Sameer 6

and Blake, the opportunity to become mascots for the day and lead them team out onto the pitch. › Fleetwood Town hosted their first golf day in the basking sunshine at Fleetwood Golf Club on Wednesday, with players and management joining sponsors and supporters for a day of golf. First team players including Stephen Jordan, David Ball and Tyler Forbes were amongst a number of Club representatives from the squad and football management team forging links with sponsors on the day for 18 holes of golf. To launch the event, the players took part in the longest drive competition, with defender Jordan hit the longest drive to top the players bill whilst new goalkeeper Andreas Arestidou’s air shot in front of the expectant crowd saw him scoop some much needed golf lessons for the year! Manager Graham Alexander, keen to stress the importance of team bonding at events like this, said: “It’s a great opportunity for the players to have some fun and good for the sponsors and

supporters to get to know the players over a few hours golf. “The lads enjoy events like this, it’s always good for a bit of team banter and team spirit.” Fleetwood GC Professional Ian Taylor helped organise the event at the links course on Princes Way at Fleetwood. Barry Nicholson, development squad manager, stood out as FTFC’s player of the day, but the best round of the day overall was awarded to Kevin O’Toole from West Lancashire Electrical Contractors.

FRITH pleased with quality of highburysurface › Head Groundsman Dale Frith and his team are the men in charge of the Highbury surface, which is undoubtedly one of the best of its kind in the Football League. Along with Bristol City’s Ashton Gate and Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park, Highbury was nominated for League One’s best surface last year. Credit must go to Frith who has done a fantastic job in recent years, as the Cod Army have risen from Non-League to the Football League. In an exclusive interview with #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Frith discusses his role and the work that goes on behind the scenes He said: “We had the two friendlies at the start of the season against Burnley and Getafe, then

the back-to-back games against Southend and Hartlepool on the Saturday and Tuesday. “The pitch held up well considering we played a number of games in a short space of time, and we were really happy with it. “We are in the best part of the year for growing grass and the recovery of grass, so that does help us out when we have games in close proximity. “For instance, the Colchester game had forecast rain mid-morning onwards and into the afternoon which messed up our watering plan, whereas a few weeks ago for the Rochdale game it was forecast dry all day, so we can clearly plan what we are going to do with watering. “We do watering for our own benefit in terms of getting the soil wet enough to hold the pitch together, but the watering we do for when the supporters are in is literally for the players to create that skid on the ball and create a nice passing game for them. “If it becomes dry it then

starts getting stickier and stickier which slows the game down, and the players just don’t like it. “My job and my team’s job is to ensure that it is in the best condition possible going into winter, so the stronger and healthier you are going into that stressful time, the better chance you have coping with that and coming through the other side.

the surfaces at the Club’s new state of the art training complex in Thornton.

“At the moment we’re quite happy with it, but we’ll just see how it goes and keep on doing the maintenance.

“Poolfoot is going strong, the elite pitches are going well and it is really helping Graham and the lads’ preparation for the games.

“The breaks in-between games are vital so we can do aeration work and fertilising, so we’ll just keep doing what we can so we can cope with that stressful winter period.

“We’re still growing the other pitches in and have a little bit of work to do on some of the others. We are getting there though.”

“It’s not just a Saturday and then an immediate clean-up operation, it is pretty much a seven day operation, from clearing up the pitch after the previous game to mowing and watering it.” Frith also gave an update on the condition of

“Hopefully by the start of early October we’ll have some more pitches available for people to play and train on.”

Djabi impressing in front of goal for young codarmy › After impressing in front of goal in recent few weeks, youth team forward Mamadou Djabi is hoping to carry on his fine form for the youngsters and gain a regular place in the Cod Army’s development squad over the course of the season. The Liverpool born talisman has enjoyed a fruitful start to his second campaign in Town’s under 18’s, and added to his account on Saturday by netting a penalty in the 2-1 defeat against Rochdale at Ewen Fields. Having penned a two-year scholarship with the young Cod Army in the summer of 2014, Djabi has become one of the bright sparks for Nathan Rooney’s side, in what has

been a positive start to their North West Youth Alliance season. Speaking in an exclusive interview to the Club’s official matchday programme, Djabi reflected on the Dale game: “It was nice to get a goal, but overall the team was quite disappointed because we lost the game. It’s not just losing the game, it is the manner in which we lost the game in. “The manager keeps telling us the battle is won and lost in midfield, and on Saturday against Rochdale we definitely lost the game in midfield and that is what cost us. The in-form frontman, who opened the scoring early on from the spot, has netted previously

in away fixtures against both Burnley and Morecambe. Adding: “On a personal note, I just want to keep scoring and keep impressing for the youth team, as that is what all forwards want to do.

“I’ve seen what the likes of Nick Haughton and Tyler Forbes have done recently, proving that it is achievable to make it into the senior team, and that is what I will strive to do.”

“Obviously, getting a couple of goals will bring your confidence up and it allows you to play better than what you would if you didn’t have the confidence but the priority at the moment is the team. “If the team hasn’t played well it is going to have an effect on our performance, but it is always good to get goals and get your name on the score-sheet on a regular basis. In terms of looking towards the future, Djabi is keen to keep up appearances in Barry Nicholson’s development squad of whom he has impressed for in their past few encounters, which he hopes could potentially lead him to a place in Graham Alexander’s first-team. “Hopefully I can score as many goals as I possibly can in the near future so I can get into the development squad on a regular basis, and then hopefully push on into the first-team which is what every youth player wants to do.
