GrahamAlexander › Good afternoon and welcome back to Highbury Stadium for today’s League One match against Rochdale. I would like to extend my welcome to the officials, players and supporters at Rochdale and wish them all a safe journey home after the match.

certainly say that of our players. As true professionals we all take defeat badly but our response has always been positive and determined to win the next one.

Looking back to last week’s game at Doncaster we were all left feeling disappointed with the result in a game we felt we deserved more from. We started the game as we wanted to but fell behind to a deflected free kick which gave the hosts some vital encouragement.

We’ll be missing Conor McLaughlin and Declan McManus this afternoon as they play for their respective countries. We’re extremely proud as a Club for these two lads to represent not only themselves but us also at international level.

The second came not long after when we were probably guilty of trying too hard to equalise as quick as possible and committed too many bodies forward. It’s hard to criticise anybody when they make mistakes with the best of intentions so our feedback was constructive in how we could improve when we experience this kind of setback again. We dominated the majority of the game without having that vital scoring touch when we did create an opportunity. The team’s performance wasn’t too far from where we’d expect and the players’ attitude was first class as we tried everything in our power to get a result. Teams will always lose games over a season but it’s very important that when you do, you leave everything on the pitch and I can

It’s a great accolade and a sign of the rise of our Club when we have players of that calibre. We wish them both well while they’re away and we are sure that we can help others within our group reach this level at some point in the future. The atmosphere when we were last at Highbury was fantastic as the players showed the full extent of what they’re capable of with a great win and to score four goals in successive games was very pleasing. The players deserved huge credit for that performance and we will need that level of support again today. Get behind the lads and enjoy the game.

Word from thechief executive › The Club’s chief executive Steve Curwood gave an exclusive update to the matchday programme on the developments at Poolfoot Farm. Graham Alexander’s first team squad have been training on the elite pitches for a number of weeks, with Barry Nicholson’s development squad also utilizing the fantastic surfaces. The site is due for entire completion at the end of January, and Curwood feels it will take the Club onto a whole different level. He said: “The first team have been at Poolfoot for almost a couple of months now on the elite pitches which are being used regularly. “The steelwork structure is in place on the main

building and brickwork is going up at the rate of knots.

temporary accommodation which is still awkward for a number of logistical reasons.

“That is still scheduled to be completed by the end of January as some of the design processes are still on going at the moment.

“The facilities are adequate at the moment while we get the facilities in place.

“All the other grass pitches have been seeded and grass is growing on them, and some will be ready towards the end of September while others will creep into October. “By the end of October we hope all grass pitches will be available for use, but obviously we’ve got to balance it out depending on the growth during that period. “The groundsman’s building and accommodation is almost ready so they can move into their brand new environment. “We’re still in

“Once the building is in place and everyone is comfortable, it will take the Club again to another level. “There are a lot more exciting developments going on around the training ground, but I don’t want to go into to much detail. “Some of the plans and the ideas we have about how we use the facility will really set us apart.” Curwood recently took a number of local residents around the site to show them the developments. “At the outset there was a little bit of concern from the local residents about what was going on here.

“We’re still going to work alongside them to make sure we are good neighbours as we get used to them and them getting used to us. “We’ll definitely be doing more of those, and once the new site is open I’m sure people can have a look around all of the areas. “They can give us ideas and thoughts about how we appeal to so many more people as well.”

“But now they’ve seen what we are about and what we’re doing, they’re embracing what we’re trying to do. Print Partner

IntroducingRochdale › This afternoon sees Fleetwood Town welcome Rochdale to Highbury, who like the Cod Army have enjoyed a bright start to the new league season. Dale started their campaign win a 2-0 home win over Peterborough United before winning their first away game of the season by the same scoreline at Blackpool, with a Capital One Cup first round win over Coventry City on penalties sandwiched between. Rochdale were promoted alongside Town back in 2014 and are enjoying their second successive season back in the third tier after suffering relegation back in 2012. Formed in 1907, Dale were only accepted into the Football League 14 years later to compete in the new third division north, and have since been a permanent member of the league. In terms of honours, Rochdale twice finished as runners-up in the old third division north in 1924 and 1927, while also finishing as runners-up in the league cup in 1962, losing to Norwich City over a two-legged final.

Spotland has been somewhat of a hotspot for striking talent with both Rickie Lambert and Grant Holt both donning the Rochdale jersey, so too Adam Le Fondre and Matt Done. Cod Army midfielder Bobby Grant has also spent time with Dale, when he enjoyed a loan spell during the 2010/11 season before signing permanently in 2012/13. Manager Keith Hill is in his second spell in charge of Dale having previously been in charge between 2007 and 2011. In his first spell he guided them to automatic promotion at the third attempt having fallen in the Play-Offs in the previous two seasons. The first of those seasons Hill took Dale to Wembley for the first time in their history where they faced Stockport County in the 2008 League Two play-off final but lost 3-2. In 2008/09 they finished in

the Play-Off places once again but were eliminated in the semi-finals after losing to Gillingham. But in 2010, Hill took Dale up automatically and ended their 41-year wait for promotion, despite winning just one of their last nine fixtures. Following promotion, Hill guided the Spotland outfit to a ninth placed finish before departing for Championship side Barnsley in June 2011. Without Hill Dale struggled under Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman and were relegated back to League Two, but Hill returned and 18 months later. In his first full season back with the club, Rochdale were promoted for the second time in four years and for the third time in the club’s history before finishing eighth in League One last time out.

They have once again proved immensely popular, and six first team players visited the camps earlier this summer to give an insight into their careers. Sarcevic said: “It’s always good to take part in these community events as they’re big things for us as a Club. “It was nice to see the kids at Fleetwood High and I hope they all enjoyed themselves.”

MATT hoping to prove apoint › The relief on Jamille Matt’s face after netting Town’s fourth goal in a recent home win over Colchester United was plain to see to all inside Highbury. Why? Well, it was the first time the striker had netted for the Cod Army in 17 months, with his last strike coming in a win over Portsmouth at Highbury in March 2014. The former Kidderminster Harriers man endured a nightmare 2014/15 campaign and missed the entire season through injury picked up in a pre-season fixture against Patrick Thistle. But now back to his best and featuring regularly for Graham Alexander’s side, Matt feels he has a point to prove to the Town faithful during their second season in the third tier.

as it’s in the past. I’m looking to the future. “When you do suffer a nasty injury you realise that football isn’t as serious as you take it as there are other things that go on too. “When you step across that white line it obviously becomes serious, but it helps you to react a little bit more to know that you need to enjoy it while you can. “An injury can cut a career short at anytime so you just need to make the most of it, and I’ve definitely grown as a person in that way.

Speaking exclusively to #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Matt opens up about his torrid spell with injury, and how he wants to make up for lost time.

“The injury came in the last minute of the game against Patrick which doesn’t make it any better because if it had been another minute then the injury wouldn’t have happened.

He said: “My injury has been well documented but it’s something I want to put behind me now

“I remember going up for a header and not being able to reach it and just coming down and realising my leg was not where I was expecting it to be.” Matt was offered a new deal by the Club during the summer months, and admits he was grateful for the faith shown in him. “I’ve always wanted to prove and show the best of my abilities to everyone at the Club. I want to repay the faith shown in me and I’ll try and

8

score goals. “That feeling when I scored against Colchester was amazing. We live for that feeling and that buzz of scoring a goal. “I went to celebrate with Luke the physio because he’s obviously been there for me over the past 12 months. It was good to share that moment with him. “I probably set my expectations a little bit too high at the start because I expected to come back and play exactly the way I know I can play. “It’s all about learning my body now and learning to adapt my game at the minute. I’m taking it game by game and looking forward to carrying on improving.”

Young cod army beginimpressively › Fleetwood Town’s youth side have enjoyed a fine start to their North West Youth Alliance League campaign having picked up seven points from nine so far. The young Cod Army drew their opening game at Port Vale before picking up impressive wins on the road at both Carlisle United and Burnley. Manager Nathan Rooney, who was appointed as the new boss during the summer, has been pleased with his side’s progress since taking over. It is a position Rooney is relishing alongside assistant Dan Gregson, and he believes there is more to come from his young side. He said: “Most people would say it’s been a rocky roller coaster but it’s been quite a smooth start and the environment and the staff have helped that.

“It didn’t take much hesitation for me to take this job because I know where the Club has come from, but it wasn’t just that. “It has allowed me to put my stamp on things and get myself out there a little bit more. I was excited when I found out my teamsheet.

has also been fresh. We’ve introduced new ways of training and self reflection for the lads.

“The place is a positive one and it doesn’t just come from us. It comes from the foundations and the good people around us.

“We’re doing this properly now from an education point of view and are incorporating that into the football scene.

“I’ve got to say a big thank you to Stuart Murdoch as he steadies the ship and takes the stress off certain people at the Club.

“Dan’s getting loads of hours to apply his expertise, and I told him when we were out in Austria that we’ll keep his standards up when we got back home.

“From our behalf the mentality has been right this season and

“The programme is 50/50, I do a lot of the technical work but Dan makes sure the lads are up to scratch on and off the ball. “Everyone at this age looks at stats and numbers that come out of games, however the lads need to understand only a small majority of them will move higher up in the system. “The way we do that is remaining the same intensity and the tempo in training, but it’s been a great start to the season for us. “All three professional teams at this Club are very close and the way the first team play with individuals is the way we replicate and mirror it.”
