words from ChrisLucketti › Fleetwood Town’s interim manager Chris Lucketti spoke to the matchday programme about last weekend’s match against Scunthorpe United and previewed tonight’s JPT encounter versus Shrewsbury Town. Chris said: “The lads worked extremely hard last weekend against Scunthorpe United and there were some good performances. “Obviously the result was the main thing we were after which we didn’t get. They had one shot on target and scored the one goal which decided the match. “I can’t fault the players in any way shape or form for the amount of effort they put in last Saturday. “We created chances but we were not clinical enough in front of goal which has been a problem all season. “We made changes for the game. We changed the shape of the team and defensively we looked sound. “They put their bodies on the line. It was a massive improvement from the performance a week ago at Gillingham. Last week was a disappointing time for everybody but there were some positives from the Scunthorpe United match that we can take into tonight’s game.

“It has been well documented that we have had injury problems in defence. We signed two defenders and a goalkeeper in time for all three to be involved in the matchday squad at Scunthorpe.

“Every game is tough and we know tonight will be a difficult match against Shrewsbury Town. They have had a decent start and they have some very good players and a strong squad.

“Alex, a goalkeeper, has impressed David Lucas immensely since coming in and I think he will have a big future in the game. He has a lot to work with; he is young with a lot of promise.

“We reached the Northern Final in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy two seasons ago and we know it is an exciting competition to be involved in, especially when you reach the latter rounds.

“Joe Davis and Dionatan Teixeira have both come in on loan from Leicester City and Stoke City respectively. They are both good players and they have given the team a welcomed boost in the defensive department. “I have to give a special mention to the supporters, they have been great. They travelled a hell of a distance last week to go to both Gillingham and Scunthorpe. They have backed the team as best they can and the players and staff appreciate that. “The players and fans have to stick together. The players need the supporters to vocally back them. The players will always give it their all and to be successful you need the two together.

“Get behind the lads tonight and enjoy the match!”

a foot in bothcamps › Five current Fleetwood Town players have all had spells with tonight’s opponents during their playing careers, and we’ll be taking a look at the Cod Army players who have pulled on the Salop shirt in previous seasons. Prior to moving to Highbury Stadium, Andreas Arestidou, Conor McLaughlin, Jimmy Ryan, Bobby Grant and Jamie Proctor have all played for the Shropshire outfit. Goalkeeper Arestidou represented Shrewsbury Town during the 2009-2010 season, having signed on a permanent transfer from Blackburn Rovers. During his solitary season at the New Meadow, Arestidou was used mostly in the Salop’s reserve team, however he did make two-appearances for the senior side in that campaign. Following his departure from Shrewsbury, the 25-year-old spent time with Preston North End and Morecambe, before signing for Fleetwood earlier this summer on a short-term deal. McLaughlin is also another Fleetwood player who has links with Shrewsbury Town. The Belfast-born full-back signed a month-loan deal at Shrewsbury in March 2011 – making four appearances in a brief stay from his then parent club, Preston North End. McLaughlin signed for Fleetwood in July 2012, penning a deal with the Club who were set to embark on their inaugural season in the Football League.

In the three-years that have followed, McLaughlin has become one of Fleetwood’s leading lights, with the 24-yearold making 101 appearances for the Fylde Coast side, helping them to promotion to League One along the way. Conor’s form with Fleetwood has also led to him becoming a key member of the Northern Irish setup, featuring in all of the Green and White Army’s Euro 2016 qualifying games to date. Recent Fleetwood summer signing Ryan will also come up against his former employers this evening. The Liverpudlian spent time on loan with Shrewsbury Town from Liverpool as a youngster in August 2007, before he made the move permanent in January 2008, but Ryan would go on to to appear just the fives times during a short-lived stay with the Shrews. Following on from his time at Shrewsbury, Ryan would play for Accrington Stanley, Scunthorpe United and Chesterfield, moving to Fleetwood Town in the summer. So far, the 26-year-old has become a key member of the Cod Army’s midfield, and has made 12 appearances for his new club, scoring two goals against Colchester United and Bradford City. Proctor is another name who can be added to the list of players who have played for both sides.

Preston-born Proctor signed for Shrewsbury Town in October 2012, having joined Premier League side Swansea City before the start of the 2012/13 season. Proctor made four appearances in a month-loan deal before moving back over the border to South Wales. He spent 18-months at Crawley Town, before moving north in the summer of 2014 to sign for Fleetwood, scoring eight times last season. Grant has also turned out for both the Cod Army and Shrewsbury, with the 25-year-old firstly joining Town in February 2014 on loan, before helping the Shrews to promotion to League One last season. Grant returned to Fleetwood permanently in the summer, and has scored twice in ten games.

IntroducingShrewsbury Town › Shrewsbury Town are tonight’s visitors to Highbury Stadium as they make the trip to the Fylde Coast to play Fleetwood Town in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy fixture. The Shropshire-outfit currently reside in 16th position in the third-tier following promotion to League One last season, under the management of Micky Mellon. Paisley-born Mellon took over the reins at Salop in the summer of 2014 having previously enjoyed a prolonged playing career in the game himself. Having started at Bristol City in 1989, he went onto make 35 appearances at Ashton Gate, which included a loan spell in Cork City before leaving for West Bromwich Albion in 1993. A brief spell at the Baggies followed, and his next port of call would be Blackpool, signing for the Seasiders in 1994. In three-years at Bloomfield Road, Mellon appeared 125 times for Pool, netting 14 times in a fruitful stay at the Tangerines. Following his spell with Blackpool, he would go on to have notable stays with Burnley and Tranmere Rovers, with the midfielder dropping down to the non-league level of the English 4

game later in his career, turning out for Kidderminster Harriers, Witton United and Lancaster City. After retiring from professional football, Mellon took his first footsteps into coaching and spent time in the management set-up with Lancaster City, before returning to former side Burnley as a youth team coach. His first managerial appointment would see him return to the Fylde Coast, when he took over at Fleetwood Town in September 2008.

relieved of his duties at Highbury, and a month later would take up the role of assistant manager at Barnsley. Mellon became David Flitcroft’s assistant at Oakwell, before returning to management in May 2014 with Shrewsbury. He won promotion with the club in his first season, as Shrewsbury finished runners up to Burton Albion. Mellon strengthened his squad prior to the new campaign with the signings of Matt Tootle, Abu Ogogo, Ian Black and Liam McAlinden amongst others.

During his time at Highbury, Mellon oversaw two historic promotions in the Cod Army’s history, firstly winning the Football Club Conference North Play-Off Final at the Name: Shrewsbury Town end of the 2009/10 season before gaining promotion to the Conference Founded: 1886 Premier.

The 2011/12 season would see Mellon make Town history again, as Fleetwood gained promotion to the Football League having been crowned champions of the Conference. In December 2012, Mellon was

Junior Brown and Liam McAlinden, who have both played for the Cod Army in the Football League, return for the cup encounter against Town.

of Ireland, McAlinden was sent out on loan to Shrewsbury Town in October 2013 and scored three goals in nine games.

Midfielder Brown joined Fleetwood Town in 2010, having started his playing career at hometown club Crewe Alexandra.

He was recalled by Wolves and featured in the second-half of the season as the Midlands side gained promotion back to the Championship.

Whilst with Fleetwood, Brown helped Town to promotion to League Two in May 2012, featuring 45 times in their inaugural season in the fourth-tier of the English game.

McAlinden made the first of his two temporary moves to Fleetwood in October 2014, scoring two goals in five games before being recalled by his parent club.

Brown would go onto play for Oxford United and Mansfield Town before signing for the newlypromoted Shrewsbury Town on a free-transfer this summer, with the player reunited with Micky Mellon at New Meadow.

However, he returned to Town in January 2015 for the remainder of the season, netting twice in a further 14 appearances. He returned to Shrewsbury for a second time in July.

Upon his return to the third-tier, Brown has made seven appearances for Salop so far this season, as the Shropshire outfit look to establish themselves in League One. Brown is joined by striker Liam McAlinden in returning to the home of Fleetwood Town, with the Cannock-native enjoying two separate loan spells in the 2014/15 season. Communitytrust › Avid football fan Richard Anderson has set himself a challenge of visiting every Football League ground in the country. Richard suffers from pancreatic cancer and also has two brain tumours, and has challenged himself to walk thousands of miles across the United Kingdom. He visited Fleetwood’s Highbury Stadium for Town’s game against Port Vale recently, before later walking on to Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road and Preston North End’s Deepdale. Interviewed by the Club’s media before the game, he said: “I’m trying before I pass away to make sure I’ve gone to every Football League ground in the country. “I’m a football fan of all clubs and I love to just watch any game. To actually go around them all is a really nice thing for me. “I started my first walk on the 3rd August 2014 and just did Preston North End to Blackpool at the time because I didn’t know far I could walk. “It spiralled from me, my wife and my daughter to 30 people from church and it’s just taken over. 6

“I then decided I wanted some time to reflect and think about it, so I went from Swansea to Cardiff and then back up the Brecon Beacons. “I walked from Morecambe to Fleetwood at 6am today and am going to Blackpool after here before walking back to Preston North End. “I usually do these walks with my wife but she hasn’t been feeling too well recently so I decided to do this one on my own. “On August 2015 we’d raised £10,000 for cancer research and then thought to help out a smaller charity so chose St Catherine’s Hospice. “I’ve got pancreatic cancer and two brain tumours. I’ve got one at the back which pushes on the optic nerve and one at the front which makes me keel over.

realised how much need there is. “Places such as local charities should be government funded and shouldn’t have to just rely on personal donations. “Local charities are stuck with personal donations and so forth, so it’s hard for them but we’re hoping we can raise as much as possible. “I’ll keep going until I can’t do anymore. I’m aiming to do one a month and if I do that then I’ll be a happy man. “My next walk is in four weeks time at the end of October, when I’m walking the 312 miles from Brighton to Preston. “I’m aimig to do it in about a week if I manage 30 or 40 miles a day, and we’ll make sure we pop into different clubs when we pass.

“I’ve been through all the anger and the stress and the panic and the crying. I made my piece too with the people I’d hurt in the past. “I was never one for charity and didn’t care for anything or anyone until I got it, and then

grant knows salop better thananyone › Tonight’s game will be a special one for Bobby Grant, as the former Shrewsbury Town man will come up against his former side for the first time having spent the 2014/15 Sky Bet League Two season with the Shropshire outfit. It was to be a fruitful spell for the wideman, who featured a total of 37 times for Salop and scored on six occasions as they earned promotion back to the third tier under the guidance of former Town manager Micky Mellon. Grant’s goals in March proved vital for Shrewsbury as he netted twice at Accrington Stanley and Portsmouth, while also getting himself on the scoresheet at home to Cambridge United as he picked up the player of the month award in the process.

his time at the Greenhous Meadow and fond memories he has of Salop after helping the Club win promotion last year. He said: “I’ve got great memories from my time at Shrewsbury and can’t speak highly enough about the club. I’ve got a lot of respect for the manager and what he’s done for myself.

and be part of a successful team always helps you as an individual. “You know that if you keep your standards up you’ll have another ten players who will keep their standards high as well. “That’s what we had last year and I’ve got nothing but good memories. I’d like to think I payed them back just as good as what they did for me.

“They’re a group of lads who will be coming here to win. They’ve got a lot of quality in there but they’ve lost a lot of quality too.

“There was an important month towards the end of the season where I scored five goals. I scored two at Accrington, two at Portsmouth and one at home to Cambridge.

He penned a two year deal with the Cod Army during the summer after leaving Blackpool, and has scored twice to-date in games against Port Vale and Gillingham.

“It’s not about ex-clubs though, it’s about winning football matches and I’ll be going into the game, if selected, wanting to put in a performance for the team and the Club.

“That managed to get us seven points which in any month is a good return. For me that was a solid month and really helped us kick on and clinch promotion.”

Speaking exclusively to #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Grant discusses

“It was a very frustrating time for me at Blackpool, and have made that very clear in the past. I’ve never hidden away from the fact it was probably the most frustrating time of my career.

Grant wants the Cod Army to respond after a difficult start to the campaign, and is hoping that they can enjoy a cup run this season.

“Going to Blackpool on the back of a good season with Rochdale was very frustrating, so going to Shrewsbury was very good for my career. “To go there and play 37 games and score goals

“Everyone knows that it hasn’t been an ideal start for us. You want to win any game you play in and want to win any competition you compete in. “It’s only the clubs in English football that can pick and choose what they want to win. We’re Fleetwood Town and want to win trophies too.

“Not many players at this level will get the feeling of winning and being successful, but I’ve had that feeling and want it again. “I don’t think the board, the players and the staff are here to not be successful. We all want to be and if we manage to do that then it’s better for the Club.”

development squad secure passage to nextround › Development squad manager Barry Nicholson recently saw his side progress to the next round of the Lancashire Senior Cup after victory against Southport. Scottish Under 21 striker Declan McManus netted both goals for the Cod Army in a 2-1 win over their non-league counterparts. Town will now face Oldham Athletic at home in the next round, and will aim to continue their run in the competition against the Latics. Nicholson has been asked to assist caretaker manager Chris Lucketti with first team duties

after Graham Alexander parted company with the Club last week. After the game, Nicholson said: “I was really pleased with the performance from the lot of the boys on Wednesday night against Southport. “We had a little bit of help with Declan McManus obviously wanting to play the game. “Fair play to some of the lads who travelled back from Gillingham during the early hours of Wednesday morning. “A few of them actually played in the game which was brilliant. Nick managed to get himself 70 minutes, so too Victor. “Those three helped us out but overall it was a solid performance from a number of the younger lads. We were worthy winners. “The first half was

10 Print Partner

very even but we didn’t really have to deal with them having much opportunities on goal. “We passed the ball really well and created some really good chances. The second half was more controlled from us. “I asked them before the game to have longer spells of possession and have two or three touches and then move it quickly. “As I told the lads before the game, it’s nice for them to play competitive fixtures as a development squad. “It’s important we play these sort of fixtures as because we’re not in a league so it gives them that edge to win games.”

“I don’t want to stop doing that as I enjoy it so I’ll try to share the workload as much as I can.

Nicholson is now focused on assisting Lucketti with the first team, and will offer as much support as possible.

“I’ve got Nathan Rooney below me at the Under 18’s level who will probably take my lads on the occasions that I can’t.

“In the meantime I’ve been asked to assist Chris with the first team duties, so I’ll obviously still keep my foot in with the Under 21’s.

“At the moment though the most important thing is the first team and I’ll try and assist Chris as much as I can.”

wynne impressing in goal after return frominjury › Fleetwood Town’s youth team goalkeeper Elliott Wynne is pleased to be back between the sticks following his return from injury in last Saturday’s 2-0 win away at Wigan Athletic. Having sustained a knee ligament injury the day before the start of the Youth Alliance League season, Wynne kept a clean-sheet and made several vital stops in his first 90 minutes of the season. The 17-year-old shot stopper, who signed a two-year scholarship with Fleetwood Town in the summer of 2014, was pleased to return to the fold having been injured for the previous eight weeks. In an interview with #codarmy, Wynne said: “It felt really good to get back into the swing of things again, and being around the lads on a matchday.

“I was pleased with my overall performance, to get a clean-sheet on my return to action with the team is a nice added bonus. “I made some good saves that I’m happy with, but I’ve also got to give a lot of credit to my defence who were brilliant throughout the match. “It isn’t about me, it’s about the team and the fact that we all worked together for a solid victory, but we have to keep on performing like this on a weekly basis, that is what the gaffer has drilled into us.

“You win as a team, and you lose as a team, and that’s the one thing Nathan has installed into us, and that’s important for team morale going forward. “Having been out of action for a few weeks, it was always going to take a bit of time to get back to full fitness but I’m pleased that I was able to help us over the line.”

“I got a good run in the youth team last season, and it was unfortunate that I got injured prior to the start of this one. “Now that I am back to full-fitness, hopefully I can get more game-time from now on and if I impress with the youth team, I can hopefully become more involved with Barry’s squad, as that is the next step.”

Wynne also said that he hopes that Fleetwood’s U18’s will be challenging for major honours come the end of the season, with Nathan Rooney’s side in a strong position in the table. “It’s early days so far but we’re hoping that we can now challenge for the Championship. It’s not just a case of finishing in a respectable position this season, because we all believe that if we continue this form there is no reason why we can’t be up there come the end. “That is what everyone involved with the youth team will be striving to do over the course of the season.” Having impressed for Town’s youth team upon his return, Wynne also said that he hopes to push on in the near future, and hopes to link up with Barry Nicholson’s development squad having already been on the bench for the youngsters in previous weeks.

oppositionview: paul coyne Firstly, your assessment of Salop’s season so far, Paul? It’s been a mixed bag so far. Consistent results haven’t come in the league just yet, but there have been some very good performances on occasions. Two particular highlights so far have been the Capital One Cup matches at Blackburn and Crystal Palace, where the players were absolutely outstanding, despite Palace scoring three in extra-time. I’d say the players are finding their feet at League One level at the moment, and I expect it to be a season of steady progress.

league for over 25 years and then look to progress further over the next couple of seasons. However, last time we were promoted into League One (in 2012) we finished 16th and we have a much stronger squad this time around, so I do think the potential is there for us to finish higher than 15th

You beat Oldham Athletic in the first round of the JPT Trophy to book a tie against the Cod Army, but just how important is this competition to you? Personally, I see it as a trophy that is there to be won and a chance to get to Wembley, where we have unfinished business after losing all three matches we have played there (Auto Windscreens Shield Final in 1996 and two League Two playoffs in 2007 and 2009). I think the earlier rounds are also a good opportunity to see players who haven’t featured as much so far in the season. It can be an exciting competition, particularly later on, if the clubs and managers take the competition seriously, which I know Micky Mellon does.

A number of talented individuals were recruited during the summer, most notably Abu Ogogo, Matt Tootle and Ian Black, so you must have been pleased with the Club’s transfer activity? Yes – I think Micky addressed a couple of issues in the summer with his recruitment. I personally think our one weakness last season was a lack of decent full-backs and Micky has attempted to rectify this with the signings of Matt Tootle and Mat Sadler. He has also recently brought in Larnell Cole and Sullay Kaikai on loan to add some pace and trickery to our midfield. Abu Ogogo has fitted into the midfield very well and put in a number of decent performances. I sometimes think his hard work goes unnoticed, but he’s a very good player and is proving to be a valuable member of the side. Ian Black hasn’t actually kicked a ball for the first team yet, so hopefully tonight could be the night we get to have a look at him!

What are the fans’ expectations at the Greenhous Meadow this year? As with all promoted clubs, it varies. Some fans expect us to be pushing towards the top half of the table; others will be content if we stay up. Personally, I will be happy if we finish 15th or above, which would give us our highest finish in the football

On the flip side, you lost the likes of Connor Goldson and Ryan Woods, so just how much of a blow was that to Shrewsbury? I think we would have all been surprised if there wasn’t offers for them but it was still sad to see them go. The two of them came through our youth system and developed into huge players for us last year. I firmly believe the two of them will

14 Print Partner

play in the Premier League at some point in their careers. They are two very good footballers and it was a pleasure to watch them while they were with us. What do you know about Fleetwood Town? I know the club has made rapid progress over the last decade or so, helped by a terrific manager who will be in the opposition dugout this evening…! If the last year or so at Shrewsbury is anything to go by, I know that the period that Micky was in charge would have been really enjoyable and you would have had a manager who made the club a good place to be, who appreciated the fans and whose team represented your town well. Since then, you’ve also experienced something that we haven’t at Shrewsbury, and that’s winning a Playoff Final at Wembley! So despite your start to this season, I guess it has been mostly good times at Fleetwood over the last few years! You’ve also got some ex-Shrewsbury players in your ranks, in particular Bobby Grant, who was excellent on loan for us last year and scored some important goals for us on the way to promotion. And finally, your prediction? A close game, but Shrewsbury to win 2-1.
