› Good afternoon to all supporters and welcome to today’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Shrewsbury Town at Highbury Stadium. First of all due, due to printing deadlines, these notes were written before Thursday night’s JPT Northern Area final second leg against Barnsley.
A little over a month ago we played Shrewsbury at the Greenhous Meadow in a game that finished 1-1. We were disappointed with only a draw as we felt we deserved more.
I’d like to welcome Micky Mellon and his Salop side to the Fylde Coast, and hope everyone connected with their club has a safe trip home after the game.
It will be a different type of challenge today because Shrewsbury have recruited a number of additional players since we last met them.
Today’s fixture is a very important one for both sides considering our league positioning. It is vital that we pick up three points here.
I had a very frank and productive meeting with the players after the Bradford City game last weekend, and we all want to improve results. At this moment in time the feeling in the dressing room is that from 18 yard line to 18 yard line, we are the strongest team in this division. While I was out of the game I spent a day with Micky at Shrewsbury and greatly enjoyed watching his work. He is a very passionate manager who has done an excellent job in his period in charge. I hope you all enjoy the game,

IntroducingSHREWSBURY TOWN › Shrewsbury Town are the latest side to visit Highbury this season, as they make the journey from Shropshire to contest a Sky Bet League One encounter. Currently a solitary point and a place above Fleetwood going into the game, the Shrews will be looking to retain their third-tier status following promotion from League Two last season. Micky Mellon’s side have accumulated 29 points from their 28 outings so far this season, after Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat on home soil against Oldham Athletic – Carl Winchester getting the only goal of the game at the Greenhous Meadow. Mellon took over at the Shrews in May 2014 and led the club to an immediate return to the third-tier.

In a playing career which spanned 17-years, the Paisley-born midfielder started out at Bristol City in 1989 and made 35 appearances in four years at Ashton Gate, in a spell which also included a brief stay at League of Ireland side Cork City. After leaving Bristol City in 1993, he spent a solitary season with West Bromwich Albion before a move to Blackpool a year later. He spent three-years at Bloomfied Road, turning out 125 times for the Tangerines, and the Scot would spend time at Burnley, Tranmere Rovers, Kidderminster Harriers, Witton Albion and Lancaster City, bringing his career to a close in 2006 having made 490 appearances at club level. Following a spell coaching the youth teams at former side Burnley, Mellon took his first footsteps into management when he was appointed manager of Fleetwood in September 2008, succeeding Tony Greenwood at Highbury.
Mellon guided Fleetwood to promotion in May 2010 as the Club went up from the Conference North as Play-Off winners. A second promotion followed two-years later, with Town gaining promotion to the Football League as champions for the very first time in May 2012. In December 2012, Mellon departed Highbury but was offered a coaching role with Barnsley shortly after. Mellon found himself back in professional football management in May 2014, when he took over at recently relegated Shrewsbury Town. The 43-year-old was tasked with promotion at the first attempt, and he succeeded in doing that by taking his new side back into the third tier.

Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Fleetwood Town Saturday 26th December 2015 - Greenhous Meadow Ash Hunter made an immediate impact off the bench for the Cod Army on Boxing Day as he rescued a point at the Greenhous Meadow. The young striker was played in on goal by Tariqe Fosu, and made no mistake as he slotted beneath keeper Mark Halstead.
David Henen and David Ball were presented with opportunities to reply during the first 45, but both wasted chances. But in a second half which was dominated by the visitors, Steven Pressley’s side will have left Shropshire wondering how they didn’t pick up three points.
The home side started brightly and were rewarded as Liam McAlinden diverted Jordan Clark’s shot into the net.

Communitytrust › Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Chris Maxwell is set for an adventure when the season draws to a close in May as he is walking all 84 miles of Hadrian’s Wall. The Welsh shot stopper will be doing the walk with Joe Newson from the Club’s Community Trust, as well as Barrow goalkeeper Simon Grand. The trio will be raising money for Brian House and Ty Gobaith children’s hospices in Blackpool and Conwy respectively. Hadrian’s Wall was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, and begun in 122 AD during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. It runs from the banks of the River Tyne near the North Sea to the Solway Firth on the Irish Sea.
Maxwell said: “Myself and Joe Newson along with Simon Grand are all going to walk the full length of Hadrian’s Wall. “The wall stretches 84 miles and we’ll be doing the walk over a period of four days with nothing more than just a backpack and a supply of food. “I’m really passionate about the community side of things so to raise money for these two small hospices is really important to me. “We were originally going to do the walk from Barrow to Fleetwood but for safety reasons it’s difficult for us to walk along busy roads. “Hadrian’s Wall is obviously a nice walk to do and is a very common place amongst fundraisers, so hopefully we’ll raise awareness on our walk.
YEARS OF TRANSFORMING GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL
“It’ll be tough but I hope people sponsor us and sponsor us for a good cause. It’ll be something we’ll all enjoy and hope the money we raise will go to good use. “We’ll be setting up an internet link for anyone who wishes to donate, and the three of us will also have sponsorship forms should people want to do it that way. “We’ll then transfer the money straight from our online link to the hospices themselves, so any donations would be greatly appreciated.” This page is sponsored by: 6

Henen: Fleetwood’s style of play suitsmine › Everton loan man David Henen stated that one of the main reasons he extended his deal with Town until the end of the season was because he felt the Club’s style of play suited his. The Belgian youth international originally signed a month loan deal back in November, but after a series of impressive performances that agreement was furthered until May.
In an exclusive interview with #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Henen gives a background on his early career as well as his hopes with Fleetwood.
He has appeared nine times for the Cod Army since arriving at Highbury, and netted his first goal for the Club in the 5-1 drubbing of Swindon Town.
He said: “I started my career with Anderlecht in Belgium and signed my first professional contract when I was just 16 years old.
Henen has proved a hit amongst the Cod Army faithful, and is hopeful of continuing his form from now until the end of the campaign.
“Monaco bought me one year later and I went there because they were doing some good things. They wanted to be the big club in France with a new President and manager.
Print Partner
Adding: “I did very well for Everton’s Under 21’s last season and that’s why I signed my new deal with them. I’m here at Fleetwood now to gain great experience.
“I said yes to them and my intention was to get myself into the first team quickly, but it was nearly impossible with big players like Falcao and James Rodriguez there.
“A few good opportunities came my way but I was looking to play for a team which plays good football, so decided to come here after watching them play.
“They had some great players but felt I had to leave to develop my career, and that’s when Everton came in to try and sign me.
“The style of football Fleetwood play suits me so I spoke to the manager about it and I think it’ll turn out to be a very good decision in the end.
“It was a little bit difficult at first with Monaco because they have a relationship with Olympiakos so I had to go there for one week before signing for Everton.” 8
The attacker established himself in the Toffees’ Under 21 set-up last season, but was eager to go out and play competitive football this time around.
“What I like at Fleetwood is the fact I get the ball a lot of the time and have an opportunity to impress. I enjoy every game and am very happy. “Competition is the biggest difference between league football and Under 21’s in my opinion.
Teams want to win more and have to win every week. “My aim while I’m here is to take points from every single game. I want to score when I can too but the most important thing is winning games for the team. “We all want to move up the league because we have a good team. We have shown our quality recently but just need to pick up some more wins.”

Johnstone hopes to follow in brother’sfootsteps › Fleetwood Town’s youth team goalkeeper Max Johnstone is hoping to pen professional terms with the Cod Army once his youth contract expires in the summer. Johnstone is currently a second-year scholar, and is enjoying a regular run of games in Nathan Rooney’s young Codlings side.

been behind Elliot Wynne in the pecking order for the last few weeks.
“He’s got the lads going, we are starting to win games on a regular basis now and I think we have only lost the four this season so far. Things are a definitely a lot better when you are winning games and up there.
“Myself and Elliot have a friendly rivalry, we get on really well both on and off the pitch. He gives a good challenge for the number one shirt and has been ahead of me all season, but I’m hoping that I can challenge him when he returns from his injury.
Johnstone said: “I think that we have done well this season, we have put in professional performances in the majority of our matches and it’s been enjoyable.
“We have a few games in hand to play after some of our recent games were postponed, so hopefully we will be able to carry on the positive performances right through until the end of the season and we will see where it ultimately takes us.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to keep on playing in the starting line-up and keep my spot. I want to prove to myself and everyone involved at the club that I can do it, and get that professional contract with the Club.
“We were bottom of the league around this time last year, but Nathan has come in and
On a personal level, Johnstone is keen on making the number one jersey his own having
Johnstone is hoping that he can follow in the same footsteps as his brother Sam who is currently at Manchester United.
Fleetwood are currently sixth in the Northern section of the North West Youth Alliance League at the half-way stage of the campaign in what has been a positive start under the new managerial team.
Speaking about the relationship with his older brother, Johnstone continued: “He is a great role model to have as a brother, and I’d love to have a career like his and one day make it professional and play firstteam football.” Print Partner
