› Good afternoon and welcome to today’s Sky Bet League One game against Walsall at Highbury. Walsall are currently under the guidance of interim manager John Ward who is vastly experienced. I’m sure as a club they were disappointed to see Dean Smith leave as over his four year tenure he did a fantastic job and certainly maximised his resource. They are currently third in the league and are only outside automatic promotion on goal difference. This in itself shows the challenge that we face this afternoon. As a team we have won three of our last four fixtures and have won our last four home games. These statistics in themselves means that we go into today’s game with confidence.
The most important aspect of Tuesday evening was winning and progressing to the regional final of the JPT competition. We managed that by winning the game 2-0 against Morecambe, but what also pleased me was our performance. The players performed in an extremely professional manner, and although we did not manage the early breakthrough that our play merited, we continued to play in “our way”. As a Club we visited Red Marsh School in Thornton and Brian House Children’s Hospice in Bispham on Monday afternoon. Both of these organisations provide a fantastic caring service for the local community. Brian House in particular are extremely reliant on donations however big or small, this is something we should all consider during the festive period where it is a time for giving. Our own players will donate a percentage of their fine money to both organisations, which I think is a great gesture. As this is our final home fixture before Christmas, I’d like to wish everybody connected to the Club a very Merry Christmas. Enjoy the game.

Introducingwalsall › Walsall are today’s visitors to Highbury Stadium for a Sky Bet League One fixture against Fleetwood Town. The Saddlers are currently without a manager, after losing Dean Smith to Championship side Brentford, but remain in the promotion mix in the third-tier and currently reside in third position. In their last league game, Walsall came away with maximum points after a comprehensive 3-1 victory at local rivals Shrewsbury Town. Larnell Cole opened the scoring for the hosts at the New Meadow after 41 minutes, however Milan Lalkovic equalised for the Midlands outfit

on the stroke of half time. Paul Downing added a second with ten minutes to play, as Jordan Cook completed victory in the dying embers of the contest in Shropshire. Their attention soon turned to FA Cup action last Saturday afternoon, when they made the journey to face fellow League One side Chesterfield after getting the better of the Cod Army in the first round in November. Following the departure of Smith earlier this month, John Ward has taken over on a caretaker basis, as the club go in search of finding a permanent successor for Smith. The 64-year-old had previously been appointed to the backroom staff at the Bescot Stadium in September, after a prolonged career in the game. As a player, the forward started his career at
hometown side Lincoln City in 1970, turning out 240 times for the Imps and scoring 91 goals during a nine-year spell at Sincil Bank. Ward departed Lincolnshire in favour of a move to Watford in 1979, who were then owned by Elton John. Whilst at Vicarage Road, Ward featured 27 times for the Hornets, netting on six occasions before spending short spells with Grimsby Town. Following his retirement from the professional game, Ward went on to assist Graham Taylor at both Watford and Aston Villa. He moved into management with York City in 1991, before later managing both Bristol Rovers and Bristol City in the mid 90’s, guiding the latter to promotion from the old second division in May 1998. He became the assistant manager at Wolverhampton Wanderers later that year after the departure of Colin Lee, and was named caretaker boss at Molineux in December 2000. Keen to get back into management, Ward then spent time in the hot-seats at Cheltenham Town, Carlisle United and Colchester United over a nine-year period.

Saturday 7th November 2015 - FA Cup first round Fleetwood Town met Walsall as recently as a month ago, as the Saddlers were victorious in the first round of this year’s FA Cup competition at the Banks’s Stadium. Despite a strong display, especially in the second half, the Cod Army were beaten by two goals in either half from George Evans and Anthony Forde. Evans, on-loan from Manchester City, opened the scoring with a low long range effort which whistled into the bottom corner.
The Cod Army had chances after the break through Declan McManus, Jamille Matt and Nathan Pond, but were unable to find the net. And Forde struck a sucker punch in the dying moments as he broke upfield before slotting past keeper Chris Maxwell to secure his side’s passage into the second round.

Jonsson enjoying life athighbury › Eggert Jonsson believes the Cod Army can take heart from their recent performance against Walsall in the FA Cup when they welcome the Saddlers to Highbury this afternoon. Town lost at the Banks’s Stadium in November, however produced a battling second half performance which deserved more. And Jonsson, who has been deployed in his favoured central defensive midfield position in recent weeks, insists they can pick up three points today. In an exclusive interview with #codarmy, the Club’s official matchday programme, Jonsson discusses in-depth about his time at Highbury so far. He said: “I’m really enjoying my time here at Fleetwood. It’s obviously been a lot better
recently after we’ve picked up some good results. “I’ve been playing a lot recently, and the team has been improving all the time so from that perspective everything around us is good. “The training facilities when completed will be top class, so that’s another thing for all of the players to look forward to as well. “I don’t really mind where I play to be honest as long as I’m playing, but the main thing is that the team function well as a unit. The former Hearts and Wolverhampton Wanderers man netted his first goal in Town colours against Millwall recently, and admitted it was a special moment. “It’s always good to score goals and with it being my first for the Club it was a little bit more enjoyable. “I’m not known for scoring goals as I’m more of a defensive minded player, but hopefully I can get some more from set-pieces. “I don’t usually think about scoring goals

when I go into a game, but hopefully there’ll be a few more to come this season.” Jonsson has been impressed by the Saddlers so far this campaign, but insists the Cod Army having nothing to fear on the Fylde Coast. “When we played Walsall away in the cup I thought we dominated the second half, so we were disappointed to lose that game. “They’ve done really well this season and have been near the top for most of it, so I’m sure they’ll come here looking to win. “That doesn’t change anything for us because we can only focus on ourselves, but we have to be at our best to win the game. “We know we can match them because we did at their place, but we just need to add some goals because that was the only thing we lacked there.”

Myers aiming for professionalcontract › Youth team striker Louis Myers’ sole aim between now and the end of the campaign is to earn himself a professional contract with the Cod Army. The second year scholar has recently returned from a nasty injury picked up during the first game of the league season back in August. He has recovered well though and returned to the side to score against Accrington Stanley in the second round of the FA Youth Cup. Asked about his aspirations at Highbury, Myers is focused on earning himself a deal and forcing his way into Barry Nicholson’s development squad on a regular basis. He said: “I hope I’m in the running to get a contract at the end of the season. I picked up a
bad injury at the start of the season and I’m just starting to get back 100% again. “I’m happy with my recovery but I just have to push on from this now because it’s a big few months coming up for me and the other lads. “It was upsetting to pick the injury up during the first game of the season, and it was disappointing for my parents too who have supported me so much. “They wanted to see me play as much as I wanted to be playing, so it’s nice to be back amongst the lads now doing what I do best. “Andy Monks our physiotherapist helped me a lot when I was injured as he was someone I could speak to and ask for help. “But to be fair all the coaches did a lot for me too, and everyone was asking how I was every day and saying I looked better day by day.”
Myers has featured for the development squad in recent weeks, and is hoping to involved even more over the coming months. “I’m happy to be involved with the development squad and was happy to score in the FA Youth Cup against Accrington Stanley too. “That was my first goal back since being injured so I was made up with that. Everyone was happy for me and I want to be with the development squad as much as possible now. “The quality is much better and the football is a lot quicker. It’s more short sharp passing instead of the long pass and lumping it forward. “My aim is to get a contract at the end of the season and stay involved with the development squad this year, and hopefully push on from there. “We’re all trying to achieve the same thing as quick as each other. There’s a been a few setbacks this season so I think the pool of players who will get contracts will be narrowed down.”
