Good evening and welcome to tonight’s Sky Bet League One game as we entertain Walsall at Highbury. The first thing I must say is that Sean O’Driscoll was a manager that I had a great deal of respect for. He’s done a great deal in the game and it was sad to see him go. But ultimately the club had to make the decision it sees best moving forward. Walsall are a club who have been punching above their weight when you look at their resource. They’re a club over the last three or four years who have been building towards this though. They’ve had great continuity as many of the players have been on that journey. They’ve stayed together and have stayed close, so it just shows you that quick fixes don’t always work and they’re an example of this.
This is the third attempt at this game as the weather in the north of England for the previous two fixtures was extremely difficult. We have a reasonably good home record and it’s something we remain proud of and it’s something we want to continue to improve on. Walsall still have a lot to play for, as have we and our focus is certainly on climbing the league table and surviving in this division this season. Their focus is promotion so there’s a lot at stake with regards to the game and we have to make sure we again apply ourselves and come out with all three points. I hope you all enjoy the game,
Steven

Having recently parted company with former manager Sean O’Driscoll, Walsall make the trip up to Highbury Stadium to play Fleetwood Town looking to continue their winning ways. Jon Whitney was Saddlers through until with O’Driscoll hot seat after the Barnsley, after only replacement last
confirmed as the man to see the the end of the current campaign, departing the Bescot Stadium recent 3-1 defeat at home to being appointed as Dean Smith’s December.
O’Driscoll lasted just 16 games as the manager of the promotion chasing side, who still harbour ambitions of going up to the Championship come the end of May.
Walsall are without a league victory in six outings, which forced the hand of the hierarchy at the club, with Whitney the man charged with taking the team forward in the short-term.
The former Bournemouth, Doncaster Rovers and Nottingham Forest manager was drafted in to continue the challenge of an automatic spot, but was at the helm in a run of form which saw the Saddlers dropp out of the top two.
Did you know? Top scorer Tom Bradshaw began his playing career at Aberystwyth Town.

Whitney, aged 45, has served in the Walsall backroom staff for over a decade, initially joining the Midlands outfit as a physiotherapist in 2003, working the way through to his current position of caretaker manager, which he has held before. During a prolonged stay in the lower leagues of the English game, Whitney started out as a trainee with Wigan Athletic in 1988, spending a year at their Springfield Park home before moving onto pastures new with Skelmersdale United.
The Nantwich-native spent time with Winsford United, Huddersfield Town and a second stint at Wigan in the early 1990’s, with a move to Lincoln City next on the agenda in 1996. Whitney was a member of the squad at Sincil Bank for three seasons, a period of time in which he appeared on a 101 occasions for the Imps, scoring eight times. He spent two-years at Lincoln’s near-neighbours Hull City from 1999-2001, and finally hung up his boots at non-league outfit Kings Lynn in 2002. Whitney combined his physiotherapy and coaching work with Walsall, an occupation he has undertaken for 13-years.

Bradshaw made just four appearances in the first-team for the Seasiders, before hometown club Shrewsbury signed him in May 2009 – the Shropshire side paid £30,000 in compensation.
Bradshaw linked up with Walsall 18-months ago, penning a two-year deal at the Bescot Stadium and has become an integral part of the side.
During a prolonged stay of six-years at the Greenhous Stadium, Bradshaw found opportunities hard to come by, and would find the back of the net 17 times in 89 appearances for the Salop.

Saturday 7th November 2015 - FA Cup first round Fleetwood Town met Walsall in the first round of this year’s FA Cup competition at the Banks’s Stadium. Despite a strong display, especially in the second half, the Cod Army were beaten by two goals in either half from George Evans and Anthony Forde. Evans, on-loan from Manchester City, opened the scoring with a low long range effort which whistled into the bottom corner.
And Forde struck a sucker punch in the dying moments as he broke upfield before slotting past keeper Chris Maxwell to secure his side’s passage into the second round.

Right Mind is a six week programme run by the Trust in order to improve individuals’ mental health as well as boosting their energy levels.
“It’s about discussing real pertinent issues that affect us in everyday life such as health issues, and is also a way of socialising and meeting people who may have similar problems and to share common theses.
The group discussed the importance of positive thinking today and were taken on a tour of the stadium before enjoying tea and coffee at the end. The group will be getting physical next week, as they’ll undertake a number of difference exercises outside the stadium. Director of Community, Matt Hilton, said: “Right Mind has emanated from the funding we’ve secured from Lancashire Sports Partnership. It’s a programme to help men and women who are suffering from low self esteem and confidence issues.
“We’re using the footballing metaphors for the six weeks, and whilst it’s not directly connected to football we do use metaphors around personal and social development. “The individuals will look at bounce back ability during the six weeks as well resilience and ways to cope as we all suffer lows in everyday life.

a chance to use the studios, and it hasn’t hit home yet what they’re going to get.”
Williams, who began his career in Town’s youth set-up, earned a place amongst the substitutes for the 2-2 draw against Sheffield United at Highbury earlier this month.
A number of first year players have enjoyed more playing time as of late, with the process of recruiting new scholars well under way.
And Rooney is now eager to see members of his side follow in Williams’ footsteps, and make their mark in both Barry Nicholson and ultimately Steven Pressley’s teams. He said: “Some of the players told me after the game against Sheffield United that they’d love to feel the feeling Matty Williams had
when he was named on the bench. “The boys do say it a lot but it’s the boys who do say it that really want it. The boys who don’t let it all out aren’t really as bothered. “It is a quick transition for the players as you can be with the 18’s for one year, and within nine to ten months you could be first team.” Rooney is excited by the prospect of working day in day out on the brand new pitches at the Club’s new training ground in Thornton next season. “The new training ground will be very important for us, because when you’re a professional club you try to keep your standards as high as possible. “A lot of the enthusiasm comes from the coach, so to be able to train about ten feet away from the new facility means they’ll have a bigger support system. “They’ll have the classrooms, they’ll have the analysis work more often and they’ll have

“That’s been recognised in recent games and the recent match reports where the first years are getting longer spells and longer playing time. “That doesn’t mean a decision has been made on second years, but what it does is allows the players to feel a part of it a lot quicker. “We’re also getting the Under 16’s on the bench as well so the environment means we’ve got a 15 on the bench but also have an 18 too, so we’re looking after a three year gap.” Rooney admits he has enjoyed working with Steven Pressley so far, and looks forward to learning even more from him. “I’ve worked under two managers during my first season here, but have got to grips really quickly with Steven Pressley and love the new style of play and style of training.”

nicholson: development squad need toimpress Barry Nicholson admitted his development squad players are playing for their futures with a number of contracts expiring at the end of this campaign. Nicholson’s side have played the likes of Preston North End and Burnley in recent weeks, with the players keen to catch the management team’s eyes. Defender Matty Williams made the jump from the development squad to the first team against Sheffield United recently, and Nicholson hopes more will follow. He said: “It’s been a little bit of a tough time
for the lads because they don’t know what will be happening next season and are playing for their futures. “It’s a really important period for the 21’s as they’ve got to take on board everything we’ve been trying to get into them from the start of the season. “The big thing for them is that they have to keep on pushing every day in training as that way we see what their characters are like. “We’ve got a few good games coming up so the lads will be tested, and it’s up to them really to go and show us what they’ve got.” Nicholson appreciates that it’s been difficult for the players to stake a claim in Steven Pressley’s team given their current positioning. “It’s quite difficult for the first team to go and push a young boy forward given
the position they were in a couple of weeks ago. “It’s quite daunting to go into a first team set-up anyway, but even more so when the team is struggling somewhat. “It’s far easier to get in when things are going well and rosy, so like I say it’s been tough trying to put names forward. “Credit must go to Matty though who was named in the squad for the game against Sheffield United, and he’s an example to others.” The Scotsman praised Pressley and his assistant Neil MacFarlane for involving a number of the players in training sessions. “The manager has been absolutely brilliant with them. He’s got them involved with the first team pretty regularly so they do get a chance to impress him. “He comes to all of the development games and hasn’t missed one yet this season, so credit must go to him and Neil for taking a keen interest. “The lads have been with the first team about twice or three times a week, and I must say I’ve loved working with them again. They’ve been excellent.”
