Good afternoon to all supporters and welcome to today’s Sky Bet League One fixture as we welcome Barnsley to Highbury Stadium.

Since early December Barnsley have been on an incredible run and have gone from the bottom of the league to within the reach of the Play-Offs. That in itself tells you the level of challenge that faces us but again as we’ve proved recently we’re capable of beating anyone on our day. If you look at our last three games against Barnsley they’ve been very tight. We beat them in the league 1-0 and then drew 1-1 with them twice over 90 minutes in the JPT. Those results prove there’s very little between the two

teams, so it’ll be a very tight contest but we’ll be doing our utmost to win the game. They’re a big club at this level with a big resource but I’m really looking forward to the game. We’ve got ten to go and every one of them is as important as the next. They’ve got a very good group of players who have had continuity to their team selection which I think is really important. With the exception of one or two players the core of their group has remained very constant, so in that respect we have a good idea of how they’ll come here to play. We have to concentrate on ourselves again though and how we can improve on recent performances. If we do the things I know we’re capable of then we can win these games. I hope you all enjoy,

promotion via the Play-Offs in the 2005/06 League One season.

The Tykes are one of the form teams in the division, and sit in eighth place, just three points off the final Play-Off position.

The now 38 year old also played in defence for Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City among others in a 15-year professional career.

Jack Payne opened the scoring after just four minutes for the Shrimpers, before Michael Timlin’s stoppage time thunderbolt wrapped up the points.

That is despite losing their influential manager Lee Johnson to Championship outfit Bristol City last month. Though under the caretaker management of Tommy Wright and Paul Heckingbottom, they have continued their promotion push, with five wins from their eight games in charge. However, the South Yorkshire club suffered a 2-0 defeat last time out at home to Southend United.

Striker Sam Winnall is the club’s top goalscorer this season, with 17 league goals, with only Swindon’s Nicky Ajose and Coventry striker Adam Armstrong have more strikes to their name in England’s third tier.

Dunfermline-born Wright had successful playing spells with Leeds United, Oldham and Leicester City in the 1980’s and early 90’s, and made 455 professional appearances, scoring 86 goals as a forward.

Heckingbottom is now in his second spell as caretaker boss at Oakwell, having been in temporary charge after Danny Wilson’s sacking in 2015. He was previously Barnsley’s development squad manager.

The last meeting between the two sides was of course in the JPT Northern Area final, where Barnsley prevailed on penalties. They face Oxford United in the final at Wembley on Sunday 3rd April.

Midfielder Conor Hourihane has established himself as one of the Tykes’ key players over the past couple of seasons. The 25 year old started his career in the youth team at Sunderland but failed to make a single senior appearance at the Stadium of Light, and later moved to Ipswich Town.

Opportunities were limited for the Bandon born play at Portman Road, and he signed a deal with Plymouth Argyle in 2011 where he was to enjoy three fruitful seasons. His form for the Pilgrims saw Barnsley make a move for his services in 2014, and he has gone on to score over 20 goals in just over 70 games at Oakwell.

Communitytrust Fleetwood Town Football Club will be supporting the Kick It Out campaign during this afternoon’s game against Barnsley at Highbury Stadium Kick It Out is a campaigning organisation which enables, facilitates and works with football authorities, professional clubs, players, fans and communities to tackle discrimination. This campaign has been pivotal in persuading and supporting the game’s stakeholders to take their equality responsibilities seriously. The vision is that football will be a sport where people flourish in a supportive community, and where fairness is openly and transparently practiced and enforced for the good of all participants. Town’s Community Trust will visit local schools over the coming weeks to tackle discrimination in society in order to increase awareness of inclusion and diversity.

“It’s a campaign to raise awareness of inequality within society and discrimination as well, so really it’s about going out and educating young people about the consequences of such behaviour. “It’s also about reinforcing the importance of living and being inclusive and respectful of one another. It’s all about valuing diversity. “The campaign it is very much about raising awareness amongst our home supporters, and of course for the players to support it too.

YEARS OF TRANSFORMING GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL

“We will also be going into local schools in the Fleetwood and Thornton locality to look at providing educational workshops for children.”

The Club have recently supported the Football vs Homophobia campaign, along with international women’s day to celebrate equality and diversity in the local community. Director of Community, Matt Hilton, said: “Kick it Out is a national campaign which is carried out at every football club in the country across the season, be that at Premier League or Football League level. 6

Walking 10 marathons in 10 days? That’s unbelievable! Hartlepool United (via Middlesbrough) to Wembley by Jeff Stelling Within the next ten years Prostate Cancer UK believes they will find the answers to ensure the disease is something men and their loved ones no longer fear. I’ve met the scientists who pledge to do this and I can see how dedicated they are. So the idea of doing something ten times came from there.

I’ll be walking with my mate Russ Green, the Chief Executive of the club, and members of the football family on the way. Why? Us Hartlepool fans have never been to Wembley, and this is our chance to take them there while supporting Prostate Cancer UK, the Official Charity Partner of The Football League.

Two hundred and sixty miles from Victoria Park, home of Hartlepool United, to Wembley Stadium, divided by ten; twenty six miles. The distance of a marathon: 10 marathons in 10 days. It just all fell into place like a jigsaw really.

On Monday 21 March 2016, I’ll be kicking off the epic 262 miler from my beloved Victoria Park. Find out more about walking with me at menunitedmarch.org

Prostate Cancer UK should be a charity close to every man’s heart because we know, or we should know, just how vulnerable we are. I like my statistics – but the ones I’m dealing with here are shocking. One in eight men will get prostate cancer, and one in four if you are black, it’s a scary thought. 8

I’ve got friends and colleagues, people that the public know, Bill Arthur and Eddie Hemmings both big rugby league men who I have known longer than I care to remember. All great guys who’ve suffered from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is not discerning, but it can be treated if caught soon enough. It doesn’t just hit the bad guys; it’s the good guys as well, like Bill, like Eddie.

In 2016 I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something where people could see I was feeling the pain on behalf of a fantastic cause. Walking 10 marathons in 10 days to help beat prostate cancer, a disease killing over 10,000 men every year, seemed like an ideal opportunity.

TETTEH TARGETS TOP THREE FINISH Fleetwood youth team midfielder Michael Tetteh believes this season has been a success, although admits there is still work to do. Nathan Rooney’s side currently sit mid-table in the North West Youth alliance, but still have a possible 24 points to fight for until the end of April.

that have come in have made the squad even better. I do feel like we do have more to do, we can get better. So far, the improvement has been good.

Tetteh has become a key youth team player, alongside Tre Sterling and Lewis Shorrocks in the Cod Army’s midfield.

“It’s more demanding. We’re more switched on as to what we need to do, off the pitch, to maintain our high standards on the pitch. We’re trying to get some consistency, as in if we don’t win the game, at least leave the game with a point.

The 18 year old is eager to finish the league campaign on a high, and is still hopeful of a top three finish. “I think it’s been a fruitful season,” he said. “I think most of the players we had last season have improved and the first years

“I think we’ve still got another gear. I think if we get a few good run of games, I’m still saying top three.”

Tetteh has chipped in with a few goals recently, including the decisive strike in a 2-1 win over Carlisle United last month. He said he is eager to add more goals to his game, including free kicks which he regularly practises. “Last season I didn’t [score as many goals]. I kept getting the assists, but this season I’ve been able to get the assists and add goals to my game. “I try and stay behind after training [and practise free kicks]. I model my [free-kick] technique on Juan Mata.” The second year scholar is eagerly waiting to know whether he will be given a professional contract to prolong his stay on the Fylde Coast, but he is solely focussed on proving his worth on and off the pitch. He added: “I don’t think you can dwell on that too much because it may affect your game. You’ve got to go into every game, every training session, and try and better yourself. Try and prove to them you deserve a [contract].” Print Partner
