Good afternoon and welcome to you all to today’s Sky Bet League One game against Sheffield United as we look to continue our recent impressive form. What pleased me on Tuesday night against Gillingham is that we won in a different way, as we showed a real determination to pick up the three points.
We’re still very much in the relegation dogfight but we have to ensure that in the coming weeks we continue to put distance between ourselves and the bottom four.
We didn’t have as much domination of the ball as we have recently due to the conditions, but showed the correct mentality that we require to get out of the position we’re in.
We all know that we’ve drawn too many games recently but we’re now starting to turn those into wins. There’s such a fine line in football sometimes.
The players have certainly put their foot down on the accelerator now after two fantastic wins against Coventry City and of course Gillingham.
What I expect from Sheffield United today is a very talented group of players. They have a manager who has a wealth of experience. He has also seen it and done it in this division, and possesses a group of players who on their day are potentially the best in this league.
But I must say there’s no complacency in this group because we don’t feel as if we’ve achieved anything as of yet.
This means that we can’t in any way be complacent heading into this game because we are aware if they turn up and play at their optimum level then it’ll be a really interesting game. I hope you all enjoy,
Steven

IntroducingSHEFFIELD United Sheffield United are the visitors to Highbury this afternoon as the Blades look to push towards the Play-Off places in Sky Bet League One. Nigel Adkins’ side currently sit 12th place, just four points off Coventry in sixth, albeit having played a game more. Billy Sharp is their top scorer this season with 15 league goals so far. Their last away trip ended in a 2-0 away loss to Rochdale last Saturday. Peter Vincenti opened the scoring midway through the second half, before Grant Holt ensured United left Spotland empty handed. The Blades were beaten on Tuesday evening by Burton Albion, with former Nigel Clough enjoying a winning return to Bramall Lane as his side won 1-0.

They are managed by the vastly experienced Adkins, who took over from Clough in June 2015. Adkins has experience of getting teams out of League One, having done it twice with Scunthorpe United and once with Southampton. His career is quite unique, having swapped the club physio role at Scunthorpe, for the manager’s hot seat in 2006. He continued from where Brian Laws let off, guiding the Iron to the League One title, but they were relegated back to the third tier in the 2007/08 season, before he achieved his second promotion in 08/09, with a thrilling 3-2 Play-Off final win over Millwall. Adkins joined Southampton as manager in September 2010. The now 50 year old enjoyed an outstanding tenure at St. Mary’s, taking the Saints from 21st in League One to back-to-back promotions and the Premier League.
FactFile In the Championship, Adkins’ side maintained a top two spot for the entire season, and for the first time in his career, he started a campaign as a Premier League manager, but was sacked in January 2013. That same season, he took over at Reading in the Premier League, but couldn’t avoid the drop with the Royals. The Berkshire club then missed out on a Championship Play-Off place in 2014 when Brighton pipped them to sixth place on the final day. Adkins also enjoyed a successful playing career, making 336 club appearances as a goalkeeper for Tranmere Rovers, Wigan Athletic and Welsh side Bangor City, where he was player-manager from 1993 to 1996.

Sheffield United 1-2 Fleetwood Town Saturday 7th March 2015 - Bramall Lane Fleetwood Town picked up one of the most famous results in the Club’s history last season as they beat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. First-half goals from Josh Morris and Nick Haughton saw Town come away with a memorable three points.
Morris, on loan from Championship side Blackburn Rovers, opened the scoring for Town with an accurate finish from the edge of the box before Haughton netted his first professional goal for the Cod Army. Matt Done pulled a goal back for the Blades just before half time as converted from close range at the back post.

Burns:My form has been down to the staff andplayers Welsh striker Wes Burns has created an instant impact at Highbury since his arrival on loan from Championship side Bristol City last month. The youngster netted his first Town goal against Coventry City last weekend, and followed it up with another at home to Gillingham on Tuesday night. Burns has featured 17 times for the Robins so far this season, and has netted once in the second tier in a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough in January. He admits he has been pleased with his form on the Fylde Coast so far, and puts his impressive recent performances down to the staff and his teammates.
He said: “My form so far for Fleetwood has been down to the staff and players for welcoming me so well. The first day I came in everyone was really helpful and showed me how they wanted to play. “Everyone was really hands on so it’s my time to repay them for that now. To get two goals so far in two starts is obviously a way to do just that. “The goal against Coventry was a great ball from Ash and all I needed to do really was get my head on it, but any goal gives any player that deal of confidence. “What I like here is the fact we always try to play football. We keep the ball which means everyone will get touches and it’s only a positive players like myself.” And with the Cod Army keen on securing his services all season, Burns was finally pleased when the move came about. “I’d heard about the interest from Fleetwood throughout the season really. I knew they were keen to get me early on but circumstances at Bristol City didn’t allow that.

“Now that the opportunity came about this time it was always going to be a good move for me as I knew how Fleetwood liked to play football. “It’s always good for a young player to get experience no matter what level it is. To be able to play 70-80 minutes each week is a massive plus.” He expects a difficult encounter against Nigel Adkins’ Blades side this afternoon, but sees no reason why Town can’t extend their winning run. “I don’t see why we can’t make it three wins on the bounce against Sheffield United on Saturday as they’re having somewhat of a disappointing time of it recently. “We’re on a run at the moment and have nine points from twelve which is massive, so it’s all about taking that momentum into Saturday. “We just need to take each game as it comes really and the more points we stack up now will be better for us come the end of the season.”

STERLING PROUD AT MCLAUGHLIN’S EUROExploits Fleetwood Town youth team midfielder Tre Sterling says he is taking inspiration from fellow countryman and first team right back Conor McLaughlin. McLaughlin helped Northern Ireland qualify for this summer’s European Championship, and looks set to be named in Michael O’Neill’s 23-man squad in France. Sterling, who joined the Cod Army in the summer from Northern Ireland Premiership side Glentoran, spoke of his pride at Conor’s achievements. “I’m buzzing for Conor and the team,” he said.“He and I have a great friendship. I look up to him even though he doesn’t play in my position. “I’m proud of him and I’m really proud to say that a Fleetwood Town player will make it to the Euros.”
Sterling himself has represented the Green and White Army in their UEFA European Under 17 Championship qualifying campaign where they were eventually knocked out in their group last year by France and Israel. Despite not progressing, the 17 year old has relished being a part of the international setup. “It’s been incredible. Obviously it’s an honour for any player to play for their country, to walk out wearing your national badge. It’s been a great experience, and I’ve got to travel a lot. I’ve seen a different side of things and how other countries play. “I’ve played at a lot of great stadiums [around Europe], and [played] on some great surfaces.”
In his first year on the Fylde Coast, Sterling has proved his versatility, playing both in a midfield three and at centre back, and although he prefers playing as a defensive midfielder, he has enjoyed filling in in the absence of Andy Smith. “I love that role. I’ve played centre half for the national team a couple of times. Obviously it’s nice to fill in and have a couple of decent performances in there. It’s been good. “We have a great combination [Michael Tetteh, Lewis Shorrocks and I] in midfield. We’re actually great pals off the pitch as well which helps. I think we work well together.” Sterling will be looking towards his second season and sealing a professional contract, but thinks Nathan Rooney’s team should aim for a top three league finish this season. “It would have been nice to go and win the league, but at this stage of the season, I think we’re aiming for the top three.”
