gaffer’snotes Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s game against Charlton Athletic. We come into the game on the back of a positive run of results, but no-one at Fleetwood Town is getting carried away. It’s been a strong start, but at the moment that’s all it’s been, a start. So far we’ve achieved good results and performances due to the effort and hard work everyone at the club is putting in and it’s great to see we are all pulling in the same direction, it’s something we have to maintain. In the past I’ve spoken about having a top six mentality at Fleetwood, but that doesn’t come over night. It is important we act, prepare, practice, recover and think like a club in the top six. If we can do that consistently then eventually results will follow and take us to where we want be. The project here at Fleetwood Town is a medium to long term one but something I am hugely excited about. Last weekend’s game against Coventry was a tactical battle, against a good footballing side and they asked a lot of questions of us. I was really impressed how my players responded to that in the second half and I thought in the end we were worthy winners, we scored goals at key moments and that was the difference. It was another clean sheet and two more goals, so I was really pleased. I think there’s more to come from this squad, we have plenty of work to do and plenty of improvement to come out of our players.
0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm
That is part of my job here, I knew we didn’t have the finished article when I arrived and that I would be building a team for the medium to long term. It’s something I did at Brentford successful and hopefully we can do it here.
“It is important we act, prepare, practice, recover and think like a club in the top six”
I’d like to welcome Russell Slade and his Charlton players, fans and directors to Highbury today, they are a big club and a team which has plenty of Championship quality and experience. I expect them to be challenging towards the top of the table come the end of the season. Today’s game will be a good chance to test ourselves against what I believe are one of League One’s best teams. I hope you all enjoy the game.

amari’ibell AN INTERVIEW WITH BELL By David Mitchell Amari’i Bell completed fifty league games for Fleetwood Town in their win against Coventry City last Saturday. It has taken just over a season, a tribute to his improvement and consistency. Only two games have been missed, due to injury, following a career of fits and starts with seven clubs. Born in Burton, Bell has lived most of his life in Birmingham but City was not his favourite team. “I have always been a Manchester United supporter, following my older brother. I loved watching Gabriel Heinze and Patrice Evra. Ronaldinho is probably my all-time favourite player, though.” Team football began at primary school and Bell also played for Sunday League side Royal Eagles. “I was ten years old and West Bromwich Albion came in for me. They played me at left back but for school I would play striker or centre midfield. I was at West Brom for just under a season but they trained in Walsall which was quite a way from where I lived. One of the coaches or scouts would pick me up but we couldn’t carry the arrangement on. It became a bit of a rush at times, arriving home from school and going straight out to training. I played in local Saturday and Sunday Leagues, went to college and got into Solihull Moors youth team.” Bell joined Birmingham City’s academy in 2011 and was offered a professional contract in 2012.
“I have always been a Manchester United supporter, following my older brother” 4

“I was given one year which wasn’t the best situation because you wanted security but it helped me get where I am today so I am grateful for that. I went on loan to Nuneaton who were doing well at the top of the Conference, then back to Birmingham but didn’t make the match day squad, so the next week I was back at Nuneaton. That loan eventually ended, I returned to Birmingham City and made my first team debut!”
It was January 2014 and Birmingham lost at home 2-1 to Championship leaders Leicester City, who including former Fleetwood Town striker Jamie Vardy! It was Vardy who scored the winner. “Yes, I remember!” Bell recalls. “He beat me on a oneon-one, to be fair. He was everywhere, hassling our defenders, chasing everything down. I was pleased with my performance, though, and got the sponsors’ Man of the Match. I felt quite comfortable so I was surprised that I didn’t play any more games for the first team.” Instead, Bell played at a series of clubs over the following year, starting with Kidderminster. “I enjoyed Kidderminster, playing either midfield or further forward. I scored a couple of goals at the end of the 2013-14 season. Then it was on to three clubs in the following year. I didn’t really get going at Mansfield while Swindon and Gillingham started off well but dipped towards the end. I spoke to Birmingham and we agreed it was best that I looked for regular football elsewhere.” This resulted in a journey north, to Fleetwood Town. The 22 year-old signed for Graham Alexander at the start of last season and kept the shirt through the most impressive run of his career. “It’s the furthest north I’ve been but not as far as Gillingham is from home! I was pleased to get so many starts in my first season. All three managers have helped my game. I enjoy the role that I play in the side but there are now one or two others who can play in my position which keeps me on my toes.” Amari’i Bell is not one to underestimate the opportunities that the game has given him. “My faith is very important to me. I always pray before games, thanking God for giving me the chance to do what I have always wanted from a very young age.”

Who is your best mate in the Fleetwood dressing room?
Who is the best player you have played alongside in your career?
Amari’i started his professional football career at Birmingham City in 2012 and stayed there until 2015. Within these years, he went on six loan moves.
Even though Amari’i has represented Championship and League One clubs, he hasn’t managed, as of yet, to be part of the England National Team.
Throughout Bell’s career, he has played down the left-wing. Due to this, he has found his main position in the Fleetwood side as a left-back.
Within three years of his career, Amari’i was sent out on loan to Nuneaton Town twice, Kidderminster Harriers, Mansfield Town, Swindon Town and Gillingham.
“Devante Cole. He’s the player I’m closest to, we are roommates on away trips and he’s an all-round good guy.”
“Demarai Gray. Played with him at Birmingham and he was always a special talent. There’s no surprise he’s gone onto bigger and better things.”
AMARI’I BELL #3 | fleetwood town signature
3
Who is the best player you have ever played against? “Riyad Mahrez. What he’s done in the last twelve months speaks for itself.”
4
What is the best goal who think you’ve ever scored? “I don’t score many. I’ll have to go back to my youth team days at Birmingham. Picked the ball up, back to goal, turned past two players and fired it in the corner.”
5
What was the best stadium you played in whilst you were playing? “St.Andrews. Always enjoyed playing there, great stadium and a special atmosphere.”
6
Finally, what is the best game you have been a part of?
“Has to be my debut for Birmingham City against Leicester City. I played the full 90 minutes and although we lost 2-1, I won sponsors man of the match, it was a great day.” 6

name: ROD ALLSWORTH job: PA ANNOUNCER By David Mitchell
Highbury Stadium announcer, Rod Allsworth, recently reached a 250 match milestone. I spoke to him just after the home victory over Coventry City. “It was all pretty straightforward this afternoon. The only issue was with the fourth official’s board not working but you wouldn’t have noticed there was a problem. Working with the officials is an important part of match day.

“We normally meet around two o’clock, half an hour or so after I have arrived at Highbury. I get the team sheets about five past two. If there are any difficult names I will check them out either in the away dressing room or with the away press. I want to get pronunciations right. The help is always there. “Dale Dixon and I meet around quarter past two. He is my colleague in the Control Room. At 2:30 we do a safety announcement and at 2:40 the ‘dry-run’ as we call it where I welcome everyone from inside the Control Room.
“I might not be sure who is coming off at that stage but I will give Dale a chance to prepare the screen for a change so that when it happens it’s nice and slick. “A minute or so before the end I will have messages in my ear such as ‘away fans will leave under the big screen’ or ‘it is happy hour in Jim’s Bar’. For my final line, I wish everyone a safe journey home.
“Then it is down to the tunnel, working with Dale and the team to verbalise what is on the big screen before bringing both teams out on to the pitch.
“I love doing what I’m doing, I love the way we’ve been encouraged to move with technology. I want my little team to be the best we can.
“During the game I will watch for substitutions. Normally I can pick up from the benches when they are likely, for instance Martyn Woolford obviously coming on against Coventry.
“I was talking with a Sheffield United fan in Tenerife. He was complimenting the match day at Highbury, mentioning the guy on PA. He didn’t know it was me! It’s nice to hear such comments.”

COACH'S THOUGHTS Under 18’s coach Nathan rooney had this to say about Lewis Baines. “Lewis Baines was captain of the youth team for a couple of games this season. He’s looking to come out of his shell this year with a taste of under 21s football, in games and in training. Hopefully, the more exposure he gets, the more confidence he builds in the game to be a better centre half.

“He has strengthened up since last season to be a bit more of a nasty centre half, he’s put that into his game and since he’s come back, he’s not dropped at any point and has been consistent throughout all of his games.”
