gaffer’snotes Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury Stadium for today’s game against Chesterfield. Danny Wilson’s side are no strangers to my players, having faced them away from home just last month. That night was a tough and competitive game which we managed to come out on top of, but we know Chesterfield have quality in their squad and will provide us with difficult opposition this afternoon. That said, I’m confident today’s game is one we are more than capable of winning should we play like I know we can. We go into this afternoon on the back of a positive result in the FA Cup on Tuesday, one which I feel the players showed real mental strength to go on and win in extra time. The players have recovered well from those extra minutes on the pitch and will be ready for action this afternoon. One of the most pleasing aspects of the recent weeks is the mentality of a number of players who worked hard to earn themselves a chance in the team. The likes of Alex Cairns, Victor Nirennold, George Glendon and Jack Sowerby are a real example of how hard working on the training ground can be rewarded with a place in the team. I’m delighted with how they’ve applied themselves and how they have performed when they’ve been called upon. It’s that sort of mentality I wish to create within the club, with everyone working hard on-and-off the field to push their teammates to places, that healthy competition is something which I feel is vitally important.

It’s been a busy schedule for everyone involved with Fleetwood Town, and I’d personally like to thank you all for your support throughout this period.
“I’d personally like to thank you all for your support”
During the last couple of games I’ve noticed a rise in the volume from the Cod Army and hopefully that’s something which can continue today. Finally, I’d like to welcome the Danny Wilson along with his players, staff and directors to Highbury. Danny is a manager I have a lot of respect for and someone I always look forward to competing against. Enjoy the game

BOBBYGRANT TOWN’S EXPERIENCED SCOUSER By David Mitchell As the young Bobby Grant kicked a football on the streets of Liverpool, he may well have pretended to be Robbie Fowler or Michael Owen, early heroes for the 26 year-old. “Both were great goal scorers and, along with Steven Gerrard, the players we local lads looked up to.” At the age of 16, Grant made his debut for Accrington Stanley, becoming the second youngest Stanley player to appear in the Football League. Unfortunately, a serious injury was to hinder progress just a few months later. “I still remember my debut as if it was yesterday. Manager John Coleman asked, “Are your parents coming to watch? If not, you’d better get on the phone and ring them.” I got the injury playing for the reserves and being so young it was worrying. I began to question whether I would ever pick up my career.” Thankfully, he did and his first goal was a spectacular volley from 25 yards against Chesterfield. “I’ll never forget that moment. It was a great ball from Peter Cavanagh. I hit it sweet. To be fair, the celebrations were a bit wild looking back! My time at Accrington made me the person I am today. When I first went there I barely opened my mouth! If I was to step out of line any one of seven or eight players could put me down and it was crucial in my development as a footballer.” In June 2010, Grant signed for Nigel Adkins at Championship club Scunthorpe United.
“I hit it sweet. To be fair, the celebrations were a bit wild looking back” 44 || WWW.FLEETWOODTOWN.COM WWW.FLEETWOODTOWN.COM
“Atkins is one of the most positive people I’ve met in football. I came home and said to my dad, “I’ve just got to take that.” The first game was at Reading. Adkins called me to say I wasn’t playing but he wanted me to sit next to him on the bench and he would talk me through the game. Slowly he brought me in to the action then left for Southampton!”
Grant was reunited with John Coleman in the summer of 2012, this time at Rochdale. “My strike rate has always been good under him. He knew how to get the best out of me in training and on the pitch and helped my confidence.” Coleman’s departure the following January prompted Grant’s own after one season. “I didn’t want to leave Rochdale but John had left and a Championship club had come in. I left on very good terms, two days after pre-season in Tenerife, and signed for Paul Ince at Blackpool. I have a lot of respect for Paul but thought I should have got more of a chance beyond the first few games.” There was an all-too-brief loan period at Fleetwood Town, thirty-eight minutes to be precise, before injury ended Grant’s debut in March 2014 at home to AFC Wimbledon. “That was a nightmare! I had been so looking forward to playing at Highbury. When I went back to Blackpool for pre-season there were only six or seven players! I got a call from MIcky Mellon at Shrewsbury and told my agent it was time to move on. I quickly realised I wanted to play with these lads. It turned out to be the most successful season of my career.” Grant was League Two Player of the Month in March 2015 and completed the season with promotion to League One. As it was, he was to start the campaign with another League One side, Fleetwood Town. It has been a much happier association than last time with 67 appearances and some vital goals, as well as striking up a special relationship with the Cod Army. “If I’m in the positions I’ll do my best to score but it’s what I do for the team that matters. I love speaking to the kids and parents who follow us. We have to be approachable and there’s nothing better than fans singing your name. Surely they deserve some of our time.”

Who is your best mate in the Fleetwood dressing room?
What is the best goal who think you’ve ever scored?
“I can’t narrow it down to one. Football gets you a lot of friends!”
“I remember the one from half way in pre-season at Southport. As for league football, it would be for Accrington Stanley against Crewe in 2009. It came from our keeper and I’ve hit it back over my shoulder on the volley from a tight angle.”
2
Who is the best player you have ever played against?
MID - Andres Iniesta DEF - Paulo Maldini
“Rio Ferdinand for Manchester United against Scunthorpe in the Carlsberg Cup was the best defender. Outstanding. I couldn’t get past him.”
GK - Gianluigi Buffon
3 You’ve seen Bobby’s dream 5-a-side team, but do you want to play yourself? What has been your best moment in your career so far? “My debut for Accrington Stanley, age 16, and promotion with Shrewsbury Town, particularly after the disappointment of Blackpool.”
4
What was the best stadium you played in whilst you were playing?
6
“Nottingham Forest, for Scunthorpe in 2011. It was an end of season game with a lot resting on it. They were pushing for the play-offs and there was an incredible atmosphere.”
“The training facilities reflect an ambitious chairman who I have enormous respect for.”
Finally, what is the best thing about being at Fleetwood Town?

TheVisitors INTRODUCING CHESTERFIELD Danny Wilson brings his Chesterfield side to the Fylde Coast today for a Sky Bet Football League One game against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. 2016/17 season form: w 3 d 3 l 11 Chesterfield have not had the ideal start to their season but with a recent rise in form, they cannot be counted out from today’s game. Wilson’s side have only won three out of their 17 games in the league this season which leaves them rock bottom of the table, now behind Shrewsbury. Their last result, which was a 4-1 loss to Sheffield United, saw them gain the lead at the Proact but four second half goals dropped them to bottom. The man to watch today is Ched Evans. The Welshman will be tipped to start as he comes into this game with five goals already this season, four in the league and one in the cup.

name: SAM DUFFY job: PRESS OFFICER By David Mitchell Sam Duffy has been Press Officer for a couple of months now, having crossed both the Pennines and sports after working previously in Rugby League at Halifax. His match day begins between ten and eleven.

“A lot of my early activity will involve promoting the match on social media and the website, looking to attract as many people to the game as possible as well as delivering engaging content for fans. The opposition media team will normally arrive between twelve and half past. The local press and national press journalists will join our own staff over the next hour or so. Just after two o’clock I will distribute the team sheets. You can put in all the preparation possible ahead of the game but ultimately it all comes down to the 90 minutes on the pitch. I see the game as the pinnacle each week in what we work towards, so it should always be enjoyed – because after all, there are worse jobs! I tend to look after the social media output. Like in any sports club there are fans across the world and we must make it as easy as possible for people to follow the game.”

“Will Watt and I will begin to decide which player may be the subject of press interviews after the game. Someone may have scored twice, for instance or have made a great defensive tackle. We will give the press box the heads-up about possible subjects. It is important that everyone has their needs met. It reflects well on the club.”
The media world is fast-moving and at the final whistle Sam is ready for a quick response on the various outlets. “After the game, Will and I will supervise and conduct the post-match interviews. The EFL’s basic requirement is to make the manager available after the game but we like to provide a player as well. I will either be pitchside waiting for Uwe Rosler, or by the changing room making sure our selected player doesn’t leave! Again, it’s about making the press happy. We want as much publicity as possible. “The match report and reaction pieces go online straight away and we try to push that on social media. We have some fancy graphics to accompany stand-out quotes from the manager. I will make a mental note of any examples as I listen to his interview so these can be selected quicker. I put pressure on my team to ensure we get content out immediately as we are up against local and national press. “My match day will end just after six. I want to leave knowing that everything has been done and done well before heading off home on the M62. It will not be long before the process starts all over again!” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWN.COM | 11 WWW.FLEETWOODTOWN.COM | 11

“Healthier Fleetwood” is about making Fleetwood a healthier place to live for current residents and generations to come. It focuses on “what makes me well” rather than “what’s made you ill”.
ARTIFICIAL
Nationally the gap in life expectancy between the richest and poorest in society is widening. The traditional Public Health messages around stopping smoking, drinking less alcohol, losing weight and doing exercise just aren’t being listened to in deprived communities.
PITCHES
Parts of Fleetwood are areas of significant deprivation with high prevalence rates for all long-term conditions and lower than national average life expectancy levels.
GRASS
AD PAGE
Since 2000, the Football Foundation has invested in £1.3 billion of grassroots sports projects and has developed more than 600 artificial grass pitches, 1,000 changing pavilions and 3,000 natural grass pitches. Find out more at: footballfoundation.org.uk
Detecting cancer, symptoms of heart disease or helping with depression would improve their health, but this is more about managing illness rather than keeping people well. Over these past 25 years the overall health of Fleetwood hasn’t really improved much at all. Modern sedentary, high calorific life styles are certainly bad for your health. When I suggest to patients to stop smoking, drinking or and eating healthier food, a fairly common response is “why should I? What’s the point? My life is rubbish. Getting through today is hard enough, so why bother about tomorrow? Just give me some pills and I’ll be out of your way”.
People don’t need a pill for wellness, they need hope. They need to be able to look forward to tomorrow. They need to choose to be healthier today so that they can enjoy tomorrow. Hope, a sense of purpose and control over your own life and your environment will bring major health benefits for individuals and the whole community. This is Health Creation. We talk about “The 3 C’s”. Connecting to others, gaining self-confidence and being in control of your own life and your own decisions. There are already a number of NHS Services, local authority community projects, Fleetwood Town FC initiatives and self-help groups around that put some of this into practice. Walking Football is a great example. The first phase of Healthier Fleetwood is to connect people together using these existing things. The really powerful stuff will come when residents start to take control and become the “doers”, rather than the people that are the “do to”. This is when the alchemy of Health Creation really starts to happen. We want to know what really matters to you, rather than what’s the matter with you. It isn’t just about physical health but probably even more importantly about mental health and mental wellness. This is only the start of our journey. Please visit our website to learn how to get involved, www. healthierfleetwood.co.uk.

Under 18’s coach Nathan rooney had this to say about HARRISON HOLAGTE. “We signed Harrison late in pre-season. He had a few spells with Middlesbrough and Manchester United in the past. He’s a good technical player, excellent around the building, and a top lad, which obviously we’re looking for in our new batch of players coming in next year. A steady centre-half who can be pushed into midfield. Very rarely loses the ball and recently he’s proven to us that he’s a solid out and out one v one defender and has built a really good relationship with some of the second years in the back line, but never a bad word to say about Harrison. I look forward to working with him for another 14-15 months.”
