‘ gaffersnotes Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s game against Coventry City. It’s been another busy week at Fleetwood Town with the long trip to Southend followed by the Checkatrade Trophy clash against Southend. Last weekend’s display was one which left me delighted, it was a game we deserved to win. I was very happy for the players who rewarded themselves for the work they did in the conditions on the day with the hot weather. The result was also a reflection of the hard work they have put in since I arrived at the club. To go to a club like Southend and win so convincingly was a real boost for us all, especially when you consider it was the club’s just second away win in 2016. Tuesday gave us the chance to make some changes and also look at players who haven’t had the chance to play 90 minutes so far this season, and while it wasn’t the best performance I’m glad we managed to get the win. A medal always has two sides and one side is of course that we won, that is always a good habit to be in and I’m happy about the positive results we are having at the moment. At the moment everyone is working extremely hard and I think it’s starting to show on the pitch, I hope we can continue that for as long as possible. Wednesday saw the transfer deadline close and it ended up a very busy day inside of the club. One crucial bit of business was the signing of Kyle Dempsey last week, a player who we as a club are a big fan of, he was a big target of ours when we sat down to look at who we’d like to bring to the club.
“To go to a club like Southend and win so convincingly was a real boost for us all”
We met Kyle last week for talks and he appeared to have the sort of temperament which we want in the squad, he’s determined, committed and has real quality. I’m looking forward to seeing him develop with us. I’d also like to thank David Wagner for choosing to send him to Fleetwood and trusting us with one of his top talents. As for today’s game, I’d like to welcome Tony Mowbray’s Coventry side to Highbury, as well as their fans and directors.

MARTYNWOOLFORD AN INTERVIEW WITH WOOLFORD By David Mitchell Martyn Woolford was born in Pontefract and brought up in Featherstone. It is at the heart of Yorkshire’s rugby league territory. His was a family steeped in the sport. “Both my father and grandfather played for Featherstone and rugby was a game I played through school. I enjoyed it but preferred to play with my feet rather than my hands. I’m kind of the black sheep of the family going down the football route!” Woolford also bucked the trend in his choice of favourite team. “Supporting Manchester United was down to my dad and I really had no choice in the matter! I was a massive fan of Ryan Giggs. A lot of the people around where I lived were Leeds fans so there’s always been plenty of banter with my mates about that!” The 30 year-old’s own career began at non-league level. “I went on a few trials with league clubs as a child and got nowhere so took up with local non-league clubs Glasshoughton Welfare and Frickley Athletic. I’m glad I did. Coming up through the ranks teaches you a different kind of lesson.’” The first break came when signing for Conference side York City in 2006.
“I’m kind of the black sheep of the family going down the football route” 4

“I was working at the time so had a decision to make about giving up. The wages were similar but I had always wanted to be a footballer so there was no real choice for me. I needed to make it work and that gave me extra determination. I had a free role behind the strikers. I got forward and scored goals.” After two years at Bootham Crescent, Woolford signed for League One Scunthorpe United and experienced a special moment at the end of his first
season, scoring a late winner as Scunthorpe beat Millwall in the League One play-off final. “Scunthorpe had been another step up for me, the chance to play League football. The play-off victory capped the first year off. I will do well to top that. Bristol City came in and it was a big decision for me and my missus to leave family and friends. We started a family down there and it’s a lovely area so I’ll always look back on it with fondness.” London was the next destination and a contract at Millwall in 2013. “It was another enjoyable time with a great set of lads. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing end as we were relegated to League One. The chance to move back to Yorkshire last year, at Sheffield United, got me back home and looked like the perfect move for me and my family. It didn’t quite work out and I never really found my feet.” Woolford has been aware of the rise of Fleetwood Town for some years and played twice against them while at Sheffield United. “It was a huge surprise when I saw the training facilities at Poolfoot. It’s probably the best set-up that I’ve been at. That makes a difference because it is where you are spending most of your time. My experience and versatility will hopefully help. I have played left, right and centre. I’ll do whatever it takes for the team. I’ll even put the gloves on if needed!” Woolford has always been conscious of the importance of considering a career beyond football. “I had a pretty decent job before signing for York. They were really good in my first year. I was half way through my course and needed a qualification. They gave me Thursdays off to go to university and finish my HND. I’ve always had things in mind for after football.” The Cod Army will be hoping that is sometime off yet!

TheVisitors INTRODUCING COVENTRY CITY Tony Mowbray brings his Coventry side to the Fylde Coast today for an Sky Bet Football League 1 game against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. 2016/17 season form: w 0 d 3 l 2 Coventry City will be looking for some winning form in Sky Bet League One as they have gained three points from their last five games. With three draws and two losses, Mowbray’s side haven’t started out their season the way they would have wanted but scoring goals doesn’t seem to be the problem for them. In their last two games, they earned at home against Northampton Town, which was the same result and scoreline that Fleetwood Town managed at Sixfields Stadium on the opening day of the season, and a 4-2 win against West Ham United in the Checkatrade Trophy.

staffstories name: dale frith job: head groundsman Dale has been in position at Fleetwood Town for six years, during which time his outstanding efforts have brought Groundsman of the Year Awards at both Conference and League Two level. But he hasn’t let it go to his head as even he admits that his dialy routine has not changed since the beginning of his career. “My match day routine has remained essentially the same over the years but with growing staff numbers we have been able to give the pitch a cut on the day. “I normally move some mowers down from Poolfoot training ground to help out. We may have three motors going and the line markers so can get started at half past eight. “The manager likes it watered as do we. It keeps the soil together.” But even the experienced Dale admits that getting his work done on time can be stressful and completely depends on other factors. “I tend to try and get everything completed for midday. If the weather is against us we might have to stretch beyond that point. “Occasionally there are exceptions, such as Scunthorpe last year when we were fighting the rain. We continued right up to kick off that time.” Even though Dale does not play football himself, he is stressed whenever Fleetwood play, but he doesnt watch the players, he wacthes the turf.
“I watched the Liverpool game pre-season particularly closely as it was a new pitch. “We had put a lot of work into preparing it and after the first five or ten minutes I could see that all was well so I was able to relax.” And even when he isn’t at Highbury, he is still working as the bulk of the play goes on at the Poolfoot Training Complex, which he admires. “The pitches at Poolfoot are fantastic,’ says Dale. ‘The drainage systems are first class, a lot better than at Highbury because they have to be used four or five days a week as opposed to once a fortnight. “Come match day our preparation has been such that we don’t need to be rushing around like headless chickens. “The bulk of the work has gone in after the last game and if you have a longer gap, like now, it helps a lot because we can do aeration and fertilisation.” Print PrintPartner Partner

COMMUNITYTRUST Fleetwood Town Community Trust has been chosen as one of only seven new clubs to join the Ferrero Sport Move and Learn project from September 2016 with a grant of £11,000 to engage 900 children. The project is aimed to encourage children to take part in physical activity, build awareness of the importance of a healthy diet and adopt an active lifestyle in partnership with Ferrero and the EFL Trust. The +Sport Move and Learn Project is part of Ferrero’s global Kinder+Sport initiative designed to encourage healthy and active lifestyles in children across the world. In the UK the programme has a national target to move 21,300 children, through 192,000 hours of activity and education across the UK and Ireland. Over the course of six weeks, children from Year 5 classes (nine – 10 year olds) will spend nine hours learning about the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Each week the children will take part in a 90 minute session; spending 45 minutes in the classroom covering six different topics related to the body, nutrition, the importance of exercise and information about food groups, in line with the recommendations in the Government’s eatwell plate; and then they will spend 45 minutes taking part in a practical session made up of football, handball and dodgeball (two weeks per sport). Matt Hilton, Director of the Community, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to
deliver such a worthwhile programme having beaten off stiff competition for this opportunity. “This provision will build upon our existing work in schools to educate young people of the importance of leading a healthy active lifestyle.” The + Sport Move and Learn Project is a UK inschool programme developed by Ferrero and the Football League Trust as part of Ferrero’s global Kinder + Sport initiative. For 2014/15 each Community Trust will deliver the programme to around 30 schools in their local area. Over the course of six 90 minute weekly sessions, children will learn about the body, nutrition, the importance of exercise and food groups and take part in a practical session of football, handball and dodgeball. The programme content has been developed by nutritional and educational and sporting experts in line with the recommendations in the Government’s eatwell plate and its learning outcomes are in line with the National Curriculum for PSHE and Science.

COACH'S THOUGHTS Under 18’s coach Nathan rooney had this to say about dan mooney. “Dan’s had a really positive start to the season. He’s currently the top goal scorer for the youth team and is moving position from a left winger to a No.9 because we thought he had the energy and the strength to do that. “He’s had a taste of under-21s football in training and he hasn’t looked out of place. The lads respect him for his ability on the ball and his pressing capabilities, which the manager has seen as well.”
