gaffer’snotes Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s game against MK Dons. I’ll start on the game against Rochdale last week, we have to admit that we were below par. Until that game we had been on an excellent run, with some superb results and performances, but unfortunately we allowed our standards to drop, particularly in the first 45 minutes. That sometimes happens in football and it was very important we addressed it the right way on Sunday morning when I called the players into training to watch the game back to ensure it was out of our system as quickly as possible. As long as we are able to remember where we have come from, where we are and where we want to go, then we won’t have a problem in moving on quickly from last weekend’s defeat. From our work this week the message is clear to the players, we have to start today’s game in a completely different manner. I would like to use this opportunity to thank the positive away support we had from the fans at Rochdale, this hasn’t gone unnoticed by the players and the staff. This week was a good chance for me to watch some of the players who haven’t managed to get much game time so far, when we welcomed Wigan to Poolfoot for a Development game. We had a good mix of first and development players and faced a similar squad from a Championship side. A number of players impressed me during the game, particularly Alex Jakubiak in attack. He unfortunately arrived from Watford with a slight groin strain and because of that hasn’t managed to get any game time while here at Fleetwood Town, hopefully all that is behind him now. He’s trained well and was impressive against Wigan, he showed his quality and also managed to get on the score sheet, which is always good for any striker. I’m excited to work with him now he’s fully fit, and his performance proved to me he is ready to add real competition to our attacking line-up.

We are now heading into a busy period of the season, starting today against MK Dons, before games against Bradford and Sheffield United in the coming weeks. All three of those teams you’d expect will be battling for promotion come the end of the season, so it will be a good chance for us to test ourselves against those sides. Today’s game of course is the most important, and in MK Dons we face another side who have just been relegated from the Championship. We’ve watched a lot of their games and they will ask plenty of questions of us in the way the play, but I know my players are confident and are really looking forward to the challenge. I’d like to end by welcoming my good colleague Karl Robinson along with all the players, staff and directors of MK Dons to Highbury. Enjoy the game!

KYLEDEMPSEY DEMPSEY REVEALS ALL By David Mitchell Kyle Dempsey was born in Whitehaven, always a staunch rugby league area. In his early years he combined football and rugby. “I played rugby until I was 15. I was a stand-off at Wigan Warriors for a couple of years and involved in the England set-up. My dad had played professionally for Workington Town and Great Britain so it was in the family. At 16, I knew that I had a decision to make between the two sports, having been at Carlisle United from the age of eight. The pressure of deciding was beginning to affect my behaviour and studies. Having achieved at rugby, I wanted to prove to people in football that I could succeed there as well. Although Dad had a good rugby career, he backed my thinking and made the decision easier. I knuckled down and passed my GCSEs, all B’s. I can keep them for the future.” Carlisle United had watched Dempsey from an early age and offered him a trial. “When you are younger and scoring goals you can stand out more. Dad and Mum used to take me everywhere back then. I will always credit them with getting me to where I am today. I got an early youth contract at 14 and broke into League football with Carlisle in the second year.” It was manager Graham Kavanagh who gave Dempsey his debut in January 2014. The opponents were MK Dons, today’s visitors to Highbury.

“I got a twenty minute spell on debut and three more games before the end of the season. I particularly remember playing at Wolves in the last game when they were getting promoted. Unfortunately, we got relegated but I got a fifteen minute cameo in front of thirty thousand.” The 2014-15 League Two season was a major success with eleven goals and nearly as many assists in 47 games. He was voted Carlisle’s Player of the Year.
“I made a good start. Everything was working and I kept my place on the strength of it. It was a massive season for me. I showed that young players deserve to be given a chance.” The 21 year-old had to get used to long journeys down the M6 and beyond. “The distances involved were unbelievable. Portsmouth and Plymouth would be seven hours. Most grounds would be three or four hours at least.” By the end of this first full season as a professional, there was much interest in the midfielder’s talent. “Yes, there was a lot of interest from League One and Championship clubs. Barnsley was looking more likely when Huddersfield Town came in. Their manager, Chris Powell, showed a lot of interest in me and the facilities were brilliant. To play Championship football as a teenager wasn’t bad going.” Dempsey’s debut was at Hull City. “Playing at Hull almost made me prouder than making my debut at Carlisle. Being up against guys like Tom Huddlestone, who I had previously only seen on television, was a thrill. It was a big step up from League Two. You had to be smarter and cuter on the ball. Passes had to be bang on or you got punished. I think I coped well judging by reactions.” Dempsey’s first goal was at Brentford, although overshadowed by defeat on the day. “I went on when we were three down. There was nothing to lose for me. I hit a volley into the bottom corner. A nice goal.” He made an immediate impact on debut for Fleetwood Town, hitting a beautifully weighted pass for Chris Long to exploit with a goal against Coventry City. “The ball came from deep and I got forward, slipping a pass in. Being here will suit me and I can see more assists to follow.”

“Then it’s upstairs in the Parkside where guests have been since around midday in hospitality. I’m mainly checking toilet areas and emptying bin bags. I’m constantly walking round! I’ll also pop over to Jim’s Bar. At kick off I go to the Board Room and bring out the dirty pots. They are washed and cleaned for half time and I’ll help get the buffet in. It’s close to where I’m based. “I sometimes manage a cup of tea at half time but my half hour break can be interrupted by radio calls if something needs to be cleaned up. Someone was ill in the Highbury Stand recently and I had to go across with mop and bucket. I used to sweep dressing rooms after the players

“I arrive now between half eleven and twelve to take over from the cleaner who is already on duty. I will have done a couple of hours at the Lodge before then. For the next hour and a half I am checking various areas around the ground from the front entrance, then on to bar areas, the referee’s room, the Control Room, the Board Room and the Press Room. This could involve a last sweep, providing sandwiches, milk and water or just making sure that people have got everything they need.
had left. Now I leave around four o’ clock to go back to the Lodge. I stay there on Friday and Saturday nights and clean Saturday and Sunday. “I wouldn’t say that I was that keen on football. In fact, I’ve only been to watch once, home or away. I’ll never forget it! The lads were at Doncaster on August Bank Holiday. I was watching them warming up when I got a football full in the face from Antoni Sarcevic. It was an accident but I spent the rest of the game in the First Aid Room! “Everyone knows me as ‘Ann the Cleaner’ at the club, not my proper name! I’ll walk into Asda and someone will say “There’s Ann the Cleaner!” I started off when the Parkside Stand was being built about six or seven years ago. I absolutely love my work for Fleetwood Town. I might only be the cleaner but I could be the first face someone sees on arrival so it is important you give the right impression.”

codcoLUMN CLUBNEWS 100 Club From Ameobi to Woolford, 99 players have represented the Cod Army since the Club’s promotion to the Football League following the 2011/12 season. Kyle Dempsey – who joined the Club on loan from Huddersfield Town last month – became number 99 after making his debut in the recent home win over Coventry City. Today could see one of his recent Deadline Day signings; Kieran Wallace or Alex Jakubiak become the 100th player to represent the Club in the Football League. From the XI that started at Torquay in 2012, to Dempsey a few weeks ago, 99 players have featured in the remarkable rise of Fleetwood Town’s recent history, but could we see our 100th player against MK Dons this afternoon?

CATCHINGUPWITH In today’s programme... Gareth Seddon Gareth Seddon’s career has changed a lot since he left Fleetwood in the summer of 2012, with the model turned TV star now venturing into a new career in football.
Full Time
The 36 year-old visited the Club’s Poolfoot Farm training ground on Tuesday to watch the Development Squad triumph over Wigan Athletic 2-0. The former Cod Army striker was watching as part of his work for his own sports management company. “Everyone thinks about what they are going to do after football, so I’ve started a sports management business, so basically I’m working as a football agent,” said Seddon, who scored 26 goals in his three years at the Club.
AD PAGE
“It’s been good, and a bit of a change for me personally. You discover what it is to become an agent. I’m still passionate about the game and always want to be part of it.” The ex-Bury and FC Halifax Town front man is now known nationally for his career at Salford City, under the ownership of former Manchester United stars Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt and the subsequent documentary that was shown on the BBC.

“They told us they were going to focus on a few characters in the dressing room and I got picked out, not that I know why!” Seddon has been impressed with the work the Club has done off the field too, as well as praising the solid start to the season by Uwe Rosler’s side in Sky Bet League One. “The facilities here are amazing and I only wish I was still here. “The players have got everything they need. It is now like a Premier league club. I know Andy (Pilley) has put a lot into this club to give everyone from the first team to the academy gets a chance. “It was disappointing on Saturday because you’ve played the big teams like Charlton who will be up there and they’ve performed really well. Hopefully they can get back to winning ways on Saturday.”
