gaffer’snotes Today we welcome Oldham Athletic to Highbury for what is the final game of 2016. Due to printing deadlines I write this ahead of the Boxing Day game against Bury, and therefore am unsure of the result. But on reflection of the six months I’ve spent at the club I feel there has been a positive response from everyone so far. We had and have two good cup runs behind us, only losing to Leeds on penalties in the League Cup and being in the hat for the FA Cup Third Round which was always our target at the beginning of the season. When you arrive in a football club you have to quickly find a way of getting results. I’ve received great support from Andy Pilley, Steve Curwood, Gretar Steinsson and all the staff here and that’s the sort of environment I wanted to work in. We started the season reasonably well, and although we’ve had our ups and downs like side, we stand now in a good position going into 2017.

“I’d like to thank you all for the welcome and the support you’ve given me” As for the supporters, I’d like to thank you all for the welcome and support you’ve given me and my players since I arrived at the club, it really does help. First and foremost I’d like to thank the players, they have been a real pleasure to work with so far. I see a lot of potential and qualities going forward into the New Year and I’m excited for 2017 and seeing where this journey can take us in the League table. Today we welcome Oldham to Highbury, and I wish their manager, players and staff a safe journey home after the game. Happy New Year,

ASHLEYEASTHAM FLEETWOOD’S LOCAL TRAVELLER By David Mitchell It’s fair to say that as a member of a devoted Preston North End family, signing a professional contract with Blackpool did not go down too well amongst Ashley Eastham’s relatives and loved ones! “I had a season ticket at Preston from four years of age so spent ten years going to matches with my family. Aunties and uncles were all North End mad. I played at school and in Sunday League for Cadley Boys. A Blackpool scout asked if I fancied a six-week trial. I got a game straight away and they offered me a contract there and then. I signed my pro contract in 2009 at the age of 18 for Simon Grayson after two years in the youth team and one in the U15s.” Opportunities at Blackpool were limited. The team went from strength to strength under Ian Holloway who arrived shortly after Eastham signed. Holloway was a manager who left a positive impression on the young defender. “He connected with the players. It was a kind of ‘us against the world’ mentality and everyone bought into it. He was great for younger players. He gave you time on the training field and the chance to improve your game. However, I needed to play first team football and earn my stripes. A lot of young lads are reluctant to do that these days and by the age of twenty-one or twenty-two don’t have a lot under their belts.”

“I had a season ticket at Preston from four years of age so spent ten years going” 44 || WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM

Eastham’s journey took him to Hyde, Cheltenham Town (twice), Carlisle United, Bury (twice), Fleetwood Town and Notts County. It was an important period in his career. “It helped me forge a career in football. I had some fantastic experiences on loan. I changed from a boy into a man. There’s nothing like stepping into a first team environment and learning how to handle the pressure.”

At the start of the 2009/10 season, Eastham was recalled from Hyde to play for Blackpool in the Carling Cup at Stoke. “It was a crazy game. We lost 4-3 but it was a brilliant experience. A week later I got my league debut in the Championship at home to Peterborough when Ian Evatt got injured. The manager told me I was playing and I couldn’t quite believe it. I was nervous but we kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win.” In 2013, Paul Ince told Eastham that his contract at Blackpool would not be renewed. Not for the first time, the defender turned a setback into a positive and It was a decision that would set up the best period of his career so far. “I was fine with that. It was a chance to move on. Keith Hill at Rochdale offered me a two-year contract. I was really excited to join. It was League Two but my first promotion came after one season then I had a couple of good seasons in League One. We just missed out on the play-offs.” Eastham’s experience of League One was to be extended with the move to Fleetwood Town after a brief period and one appearance in 2012. “It’s good to be at Fleetwood now, seeing a club on the rise. I’ve got good experience at this level and I’m still only 25 so there’s still plenty to give. We have a few Preston lads in the squad which helps, including Pondy, of course. In fact, he’s one of the few from when I was here first time round! I call him an old man but his professionalism shines through. He’s in great shape and has been brilliant for me. We complement each other.” “We want to be a progressive and successful club, not just satisfied with mid-table or fighting to stay up. The recent switch of strategy in defence has suited us and allowed us to get attacking players such as Amar’ii and Conor into the game more. Meanwhile, us centrehalves are happy to do the dirty work at the back!”

“I had some fantastic experiences on loan. I changed from a boy to a man.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM || 55

1

Who is your best mate in the the footballing world? “Dom Collins of AFC Fylde. He was at Preston North End when I was at Blackpool Youth”

2

Who is the best player you have ever played against? “Best Player I’ve played against has to be Ricardo Fuller at Stoke City because he had everything, the size, the pace and crazy skills!”

3

What has been your best moment in your career so far? “Best moment has to be the promotion with Rochdale back in 2014.”

4

What was the best stadium you played in whilst you were playing? “That would have to be Stoke City. The crowd singing ‘Delilah’ as we came onto the pitch made the hairs on my neck stand on end.”

Finally, what is the best thing about being at Fleetwood Town?

“Best thing about Fleetwood has to be the story behind the club.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 7

TheVisitors INTRODUCING OLDHAM ATHLETIC Stephen Robinson brings his Oldham side to the Fylde Coast today for a Sky Bet Football League One New Years Eve fixture against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. 2016/17 season form: w 3 d 9 l 9 Oldham have struggled to get off the mark this season as they sit at the bottom of the Sky Bet League One table at the Christmas break. Robinson and his side have not been at their best this season as they have only won three out of their 21 games. Their last win was when they beat Walsall 3-1 at Bescot Stadium a couple of weeks ago. Today’s man to watch is striker Billy McKay. He has played in 25 games so far this season and has the ability to fool defenders and earn his side pivotal points.

myMATCHDAY name: BARRY NICHOLSON job: FIRST TEAM COACH By David Mitchell Former Scotland international, Barry Nicholson, has been both player and coach at Fleetwood Town. His matchday begins at Poolfoot between half past ten and eleven o’clock. “The coaching staff go over the short presentation which will be shown to the players. The gaffer will have his team sorted by then but will run it past us to make sure we have covered everything. The lads report at quarter to twelve, sit down for food and maybe watch some of the televised match. We meet with them around quarter to one. “I let kit man Danny Moore know the team around one. He sets the gear out at Highbury before the lads arrive. When I get to the ground I will sit and write out the team sheet. I’ll let goalkeeping coach, Dave Lucas, double-check it before Rob Kelly takes it to the referee at quarter to two. “Once we have news of our opponent’s team, we go through set pieces again. There will be templates on the walls of the dressing room so that players can familiarise themselves as they are moving around, going to the toilet, or stretching. Between ten and twenty past two we will be in the dressing room getting players ready for the warm-up. We have had good starts to a lot of games this season and I believe it comes from being switched-on right away when the warm-up begins. “I’m on the pitch with fitness coach, Youl Mawene, and we will take the players through

our sequence of activities. Youl deals with the dynamic side, I concentrate on passing and possession. Then we split off. Rob Kelly takes the defenders and I take the strikers. “I’m in the dugout throughout the game. I’m usually the one who writes down what the gaffer or Rob have seen and want to remember. Depending on when the note is made, it could be addressed at half time or in our Monday debrief.” Traditionally, the coaching staffs meet after the game and for someone like Barry Nicholson there will be many familiar faces. “We will get together for a drink. Generally we don’t speak about the game. I’m always bumping into people from the past. There’s plenty of Scots as well! If you know others well there might be family updates, otherwise we might chat about who we face next. After they’ve gone we will quickly talk about Sunday training plans if we are in or just get off. With a lot of Tuesday games we have been regularly on Sundays. Then it’s in the car by six and home for a relaxing evening.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 11 WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 11

COMMUNITYTRUST Over the last 12 months, the Trust has delivered quality outcome focused and innovative programmes, engaging with over 3000 residents in sport, health and education projects across Wyre. We’ve achieved significant growth in our portfolio of projects and we’re really proud to say our work has been recognised both locally and regionally. Indeed, the Trust were recent winners at the Wyre Business Awards in November 2016, for its work within the local community. The increased number of projects delivered has resulted in our full time staff increasing from nine to 14 with the non-contracted staff doubling to 12. Our new offices at the £8million Poolfoot Farm sports complex has enabled the Trust to thrive in state of the art facilities. Collaborations with local organisations have proven vital to our advancement this year and a prime example of this has been the establishment of our traineeship programme delivered in partnership with GP strategies and Regenda Housing. Other examples include our partnerships with Myerscough College and League Football Education in the successful delivery of our NCS and football education programmes respectively. Of course, our fantastic level of growth could not be possible without the vital support we receive from our trustees, partners, the

various funding channels we are able to access and our relentlessly hard working team. As Fleetwood Town Football Club’s official charity, we are clear that it is our responsibility to use the immeasurable power of the football club, and its brand, to create positive change in our communities – and this is what we are doing, every day. And looking to the future, we’re excited about all the opportunities 2016/17 will bring as we look to build on our achievements over the past year. I would like to express my gratitude to our trustees, staff, volunteers, local businesses and all our funders for their continued support. Matt Hilton Director of Community Development & Education

COACH'S THOUGHTS Head Coach NATHAN ROONEY had this to say about JACK BISHOP. “Jack is in the first year of his scholarship. He came through the Under 16’s ranks as a central midfielder and was used in the latter stages of last year by the Youth Team. He’s developed well over the last couple of weeks with his confidence and the way he gets himself on the ball. He had a really good impact when he came on against Rochdale where he created three goals for Gerard Garner.”
