Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for the game against Peterborough United. Today sees us return to League action after a two-week break, but it’s been anything but a break for our staff and players. We have used the free week to work hard on the training ground and also welcomed it as a chance for some of the players who had played a lot of football so far this season to recover. In mid-week a team made up of players from the first and development squads played a strong Preston side at Poolfoot Farm, and I was very impressed with the performance and the result. It gave some of our young players the chance to test themselves against some very experienced Championship players and I was delighted with how they responded.

This afternoon we welcome Peterborough for what we expect to be another tough game, as they are all in this division. It’s the start of a very busy period for us, with two away trips to follow in the next seven days, so we are hoping we can start it with a positive result this afternoon. Finally, I’d like to welcome Grant McCann and his players, staff and supporters to Highbury today and wish you all a safe journey back to Peterborough after the game. Enjoy!

MICHAELDUCKWORTH BORN IN GERMANY, RAISED IN YORKSHIRE By David Mitchell Check out Michael Duckworth on the new FIFA game and you will find a German flag alongside his name. Despite it being his place of birth, the full back’s roots are very much established in Yorkshire. “Dad was in the forces in Germany. I came to England after a few months and have lived in Rawcliffe near York pretty much all my life.” Football was a focus from an early age. “Dad was a big Liverpool fan and I started supporting them, the likes of Steven Gerrard. You can imagine how exciting it was to play against Liverpool in Fleetwood’s pre-season a few months ago! It’s every lad’s dream to play against the team they support. “I have played football since around four years old. Rawcliffe had a really good team and I always looked forward to tournaments. I got offered a trial for York City’s academy at the age of ten. After coming through the Centre of Excellence I signed a two-year scholarship in 2008 at the age of 16. Unfortunately, I was told at 18 that I was too small and was released.” After a few trials, Duckworth’s immediate future lay in non-league football, at Harrogate Railway Athletic. “It was a drop but I started to enjoy my football again and played up front. I decided that I’d give myself to 21 and if I didn’t have anything permanent I would go semi-pro and get a job. However, I was confident that I could make football my career.”
“Dad was in the forces in Germany. I came to England after a few months” 4

The following season, 2011-12, Duckworth signed for Bradford Park Avenue and was part of the team promoted to Conference North. A year later, he won both the fans and the players Player of the Year awards. His progress attracted attention. “I got a phone call. Hartlepool wanted me to go down pre-season. I’d had a bit of interest from clubs during
my second season at Park Avenue. The Bradford manager played in the England veterans’ side with Hartlepool manager, Colin Cooper, and that might have helped. I had just turned 21 and was now at full back. One of my mates had had an injury and I stepped in to his position. I had a good game and stayed there. You see a lot of the ball in both halves these days as a full back and my previous attacking experience helped me. I went on trial for about six or seven weeks but nothing was being sorted. I was travelling about an hour and twenty minutes a day and not getting paid. I seriously considered just giving it up and going back to Bradford.” Thankfully, Duckworth didn’t because things began to happen at Victoria Park. “Hartlepool offered me a month to month deal. After my first month they offered me a year’s contract. Before that ran out I had signed a two-year deal.” He made his debut at home in August 2013 against.... Fleetwood Town! Fleetwood won one nil on the day but Duckworth claims he should have had a penalty when he was tripped in the penalty area. He was to enjoy greater fortune when Hartlepool beat Town at Highbury a couple of years later in the Capital One Cup. He played 94 times over three seasons, scoring four goals. “Towards the end of last season my agent said that Fleetwood had been talking about me. Steven Pressley came to watch me and had been impressed when I played against his Coventry team.” The 24 year-old has made four league appearances for Fleetwood so far. “League One is a lot more demanding. I had a preseason unlike any I’ve had before. I was going home, lying on the sofa and not moving till the next day! It has benefited me as a player, though, in terms of fitness and condition. I feel that I’ve done well when called on which is important for a new player.”

Who is your best mate in the Fleetwood dressing room?
What is the best goal who think you’ve ever scored?
“Alex Cairns. We’ve just got on since day one and we both signed at a similar time and we’ve got mutual friends outside of the club so I’d say I’ve got on best with him.”
“Now this goal got votes the Goal of the Year for the League... It was against Carlisle in a 3-3 draw on the last day of the season a couple of years ago. I picked the ball up in my own half, ran past two players, played a 1-2 with Marlon harewood and then smashed it in the top corner! The rest is history.”

MID - Steven Gerrard

1
Who is the best player you have ever played against? “Probably Firmino for Liverpool. His touch never let him down and never gave it away but maybe if I would have played in the first half I might have said Mane!”
3 What has been your best moment for Fleetwood so far? “I’d say there are two. The survival year at Hartlepool and signing for Fleetwood, but signing for the club propbably just edges it for me.”
4
What was the best stadium you played in whilst you were playing? “Valley Parade - although I didn’t play this season I have played there before. It’s a nice ground.”
6
Finally, what is the best thing about being at Fleetwood Town?
“The opportunity to develop and get better as a player. It’s a good stepping stone in my career and obviously the facilities are amazing. There are probably people who would dream of training here every day and getting the opportunity to progress.”

LESS MISSED OUT MORE IN THE MONEY
TheVisitors INTRODUCING PETERBOROUGH UNITED Grant McCann brings his Peterborough United side to the Fylde Coast today for a Sky Bet Football League One game against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. 2016/17 season form: w 4 d 5 l 3 Peterborough United have kept a steady form in this current season so far and will hope to continue the same way. McCann’s side have won four games out of twelve with their win against Bury last week and that places them in 9th place in Sky Bet League One ahead of this game. In their game against Bury, Marcus Maddison picked up a brace and Tom Nichols added another. Maddison will be the player to watch in the game against the Cod Army as he has already scored six goals this season and will be hungry for more but he couldn’t even find the net as they fell short in their 1-0 loss against MK Dons.

name: NICOLA GROVES job: TICKET DISTRIBUTOR By David Mitchell As part of the club’s ticket staff, Nicola Groves has occupied her white booth for five years and in various different positions around the main entrance at Highbury Stadium. “I’ve been here in all weathers, wind, rain, extreme cold. I arrive at the ground around half eleven, quarter to twelve on matchday. I will find out the specific ticketing details for the day from the main office and sort out the reserved tickets into alphabet order. I deal with referees, officials, agents, scouts and the family and friends of the players. I will also have the online orders. Scouts start to arrive about an hour before kick-off. They get a team sheet and a pass to the Red and Whites Bar in the Memorial Stand.”

“There can be situations that need a bit of unpicking. I might get someone expecting a ticket which isn’t there, for instance, while some people might not remember names so I have to use my initiative but after a few years doing the job I tend to know who’s who. If necessary, I can use my radio to speak to the office.” “I am one of the first club officials that visiting supporters tend to see and sometimes think I’m a human Google! I get asked where the nearest chippy is, which is the best pub, whether there is a shop nearby, whether they are allowed in Jim’s Bar, where the nearest cash machine is..!” Nicola is clear about the qualities needed in her job. “Definitely good personal skills as well as an ability to be calm under pressure. would be another quality. Sometimes you get someone who insists they are right, whatever I say. In situations like that you have to be able to laugh and joke because it can calm people down if they are getting slightly aggressive.” Her work complete, Nicola gets into the ground at about five to three in time for kick off. “At half time I will stand on the corner of the Parkside Stand, at the Memorial Stand End, and watch who is passing through to the Red and Whites Bar. Passes are limited and as I have already given them out earlier I know who is around each day.” Ticket distribution has not been Nicola’s only matchday job, having previously worked in the bars. Fleetwood Town means so much to Nicola. Home and away, she has not missed a match in six seasons. Sadly, this record will be broken when Town play at Bristol Rovers on 1st November. “The date was moved late because of the international weekend and I can’t get time off work! I would say that 95% of my leave revolves around football.”

codcoLUMN CLUBNEWS A big thanks to the Free Kicks Foundation Our next home against Peterborough United will see two very lucky children become mascots for the day at Highbury stadium. The Free Kicks Foundation is a Peterborough based charity whose aim is to provide football-related activities for ill, bereaved and disadvantaged children, to give them a day to remember with their favourite football club. The charity is run on a voluntary basis by Steve Thorpe and Sam Downing. Steve’s main responsibility is fundraising as well as using his extensive media contacts to gain publicity. Sam is the Kick Co-ordinator, she liaises with clubs, hospitals and families to ensure that the children have a day to remember.
Thanks to the tireless work of The Free Kicks Foundation we were able to offer two children from Flakefleet Primary School with the opportunity of being today’s mascots. The children will be treated to behind the scene access to the stadium before having the opportunity to head in to the changing room to meet the squad and management. Once they have met the players the children will head out on to the pitch to have a kick about before leading the teams out for kick-off, they can then take their seats to watch the game. We hope that both children will enjoy their experience and we look forward to welcoming them and their families next Saturday. Thank you again to Sam and Steve of The Free Kicks Foundation and to find out more about the amazing work they do please visit their website www.freekicksfoundation.org or @FreeKicks.

Under 18’s coach Nathan rooney had this to say about SOLOMON ABUBAKAR. “Solomon has shown good progression since the start of the season. We discussed at the end of the year that his athleticism was a strong part of his game and this year we’ve asked him to come back as a mature young man. He plays his football in the right way and he’s a strong character around the group. I think Solomon’s strengths are the way he communicates with his teammates and how he tries to keep the group together. Let’s see how the next six months pan out for Solomon.”
