gaffer’snotes Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s game against Sheffield United. We go into the game looking to bounce back from Tuesday night’s defeat against Bradford, and to get back to winning ways in front of our home supporters. In recent weeks we have conceded too many soft goals due to the fact we are failing to keep concentration for the whole 90 minutes. This is something which was an issue here at Fleetwood Town before I arrived in the summer. In preseason we conceded 16 goals in six games. We felt we had addressed that in the first seven games, but it’s began to creep in a little in the last couple of weeks. It’s something we will work hard to improve on the training ground and in the analysis session, I’m convinced over time we will see improvement on the mental side of our game. Saying that, I do believe that the players have given me everything they have and have performed well in all games so far this season, except maybe the opening 45 minutes at Rochdale. I think we have been better, and if not equal, to all of our opposition we have faced so far this season On Tuesday at Bradford I felt we were very unlucky to come away with a defeat, I actually think it was a game which should have won, let alone draw. But football is about moments, and taking your chances when they come. If we do that then I’m confident we can come away with a positive result this afternoon.

“I think we have been better, if not equal, to all of our opposition”

I’d like to welcome Chris Wilder, the fans, players and directors of Sheffield United to Highbury today, it’s a chance for us to test ourselves against another big club. There will be a lot of travelling fans here today, and hopefully that will make for a great atmosphere and an entertaining game. Enjoy the afternoon!

VICTORNIRENNOLD NIRENNOLD’S SOCCER AND STUDY By David Mitchell When Alex Jakubiak made his debut for Fleetwood Town against MK Dons last Saturday he became the hundredth player to represent the club in the Football League. Among the sixteen nationalities to feature are five French players, the most recent of which was Victor Nirennold, tucked in at number seventy-nine in the list. Nirennold has travelled arguably more miles than most before making his debut in English football, his journey taking him from Britanny in north-west France to Fleetwood via California and Miami. “I have always been interested in football. The first team that I supported was Stade Rennais. That is the local team in Rennes, the city where I was born in 1991. I was also a massive fan of Ronaldinho when he played for Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona. I would watch games just for him. He was a magical player.” Developing the club’s youth academy was an important feature in a period of stability for Rennes after they returned to the top tier in France in 1994 and Nirennold was one of many young talents that was nurtured. “I started playing football at around six or seven years old and it was at Stade Rennais. A lot of good young players came from away and stopped over but I had the good fortune to go home each day and live with my family. I think that it is best at this age to be near them if you can.” At this early stage, Nirennold was able to play different positions, as he does today.

“I started playing football around six or seven years old and it was at Stade Rennais” 4

“Throughout my career I’ve always played in more than one position, in midfield or defence. I have played full back and centre back, even centre forward in America.” The boy who was more than happy to play for his home town club and live with his family was to spread his wings in spectacular style.

“I found an opportunity to play college soccer in the States, get a scholarship and study for free. I loved it. I was in my early twenties and my family were fine about me going. They saw it as a good experience, the chance to pick up a new language and study for a degree. It was an easy move. People helped me a lot and I went to some great places, such as California! I studied business administration and international commerce. When I was younger I played football as a dream but now I changed my focus towards my studies.” Team names such as the Erskine Flying Fleet and the Nova Southeastern Sharks were exotic enough but the 25 year-old admits that the standard of football, or soccer as it was known, was not high. “I still enjoyed it, though. It was a bit better when I played for Miami City in the Premier Development League in 2014/15. I spent two really good years there. When I played there I made a video which I sent to a couple of people and Fleetwood gave me a chance. I had a two-week trial with Graham Alexander and played in three friendlies. I was offered a two year contract at the end of the fortnight. That gave me the chance to get used to the professional life and the intensity. The standard here is definitely higher than I met in America, there is no comparison.” Nirennold’s debut for Fleetwood came at Rochdale, almost exactly a year ago. “I remember it like it was yesterday.” His first goal came in a draw at Northampton on the opening day of this season. “A header at the back post. Nice! “I thought football was a comfortable life when I was studying but now I know it is a real job! A professional career can be very short, you can get injured, you need to be ready for a life after. I have two semesters left to finish my studies. I’m going to go online really soon and get that degree.”

Who is your best mate in the Fleetwood dressing room?

What is the best goal who think you’ve ever scored?

“That would be... Aaron Amadi-Holloway. It’s tough for him at the moment being injured.”

“I scored a great goal when I was at college in America. It was a beautiful chip from outside the box!”

2

Who is the best player you have ever played against? “Sadio Mane. His pace and skill was amazing for me to watch and now he’s gone to Liverpool he’s kicked on again”

6

Finally, what is the best thing about being at Fleetwood Town?

“It’s the opportunity the club give me to improve as a person and a player every day. For a footballer, you don’t get better facilities than here too.”

3 What has been your best moment for Fleetwood so far? “My goal against Northampton at the start of the season. It meant a lot to me.”

4

What was the best stadium you played in whilst you were playing? “Probably either Wigan or Coventry. I’ll go for Wigan even though we lost 3-1 when we played there.”

name: MARTIN BOOKER job: HEAD OF COMMERCIAL By David Mitchell Martin Booker runs the Commercial operation at Fleetwood Town and his match day centres on the Parkside Stand, ensuring that the experience for visitors in hospitality is one to remember. Martin sees himself as part of a much bigger match day operation. “I will liaise with such as the bar staff and the ticket office. I also liaise with PA Announcer Rod Allsworth and Dale Dixon pre-match to ensure that we are giving correct information out on the big screen and verbally.

“If there are hasn’t been a function on the Friday evening we can set the Parkside Suite up the day before the match. experience in hospitality. We also interview our own players who might be injured or not in the squad that day.” “I probably only get to start watching the game about ten minutes in and will sit with guests. During half time I go upstairs and do a bit of compering in the lounge, previewing future games or promoting events. There may be activity at Poolfoot to talk about, whatever is topical. I can start enjoying the game in the second half. With about five minutes to go we locate our match sponsor and get a consensus over who is Man of the Match. It’s all about opinions. We like to present this award on the pitch at the end. It captures the moment.” “Then it is back upstairs to make the draw for guessing the correct score. The winner gets a hospitality voucher for the next game. That prize is always well-received. A player may come up post-match and we might grab a minute on the microphone with him. Then there will be a final set of thanks for everybody. Guests may hang around for an hour or so after the game. So we will join them for a drink after work is done over, networking and chatting. Hopefully, we will be celebrating a victory. The team is playing well and that can only help us commercially.”

Full Time AD PAGE

Back in December 2014, in Fleetwood’s first Sky Bet League One season, the two sides met for the first time. Antoni Sarcevic’s 53 rd minute strike cancelled out Bob Harris’ 8 th minute goal in a 1-1 draw. In the return leg at Bramall Lane, Fleetwood recorded a famous victory, as Josh Morris and Nick Haughton put the Cod Army 2-0 up. Matt Done pulled one back for the hosts just before the break but Town held on in the second half for a big three points. The Cod Army weren’t as fortunate on their next visit to South Yorkshire though, as Che Adams put the Blades 1-0 up within 30 seconds of kick off. Adams added a second with half an hour to go before Billy Sharp got his name on the score sheet late on to make the final score 3-0. The two sides also met in the now re-named EFL Trophy last season. With the scores 0-0 after 90

The last meeting between Fleetwood and Sheffield United was an exciting 2-2 draw in March this year. It took just two minutes for Ash Hunter to equalise after Marcus Nilsson’s own goal gave United the lead at Highbury. In the second half, Nilsson scored at the end to put Town ahead, before a Che Adams penalty in stoppage time denied the hosts a point. Nick Haughton was also sent off late on.
