gaffer’snotes Good evening and welcome to Highbury for the Emirates FA Cup Second Round Replay against Shrewsbury Town. This evening’s game has the makings of a very entertaining clash, featuring two sides on decent runs of form. Our visitors enjoyed an excellent victory at Millwall on Saturday and full of confidence, they are a much improved side since the arrival of manager Paul Hurst. Shrewsbury are a hard working and organised side and we will have to be at our best to win through to the Third Round of the FA Cup this evening. For the winners awaits an attractive tie against a good Championship side in Bristol City, putting yourself up against opposition from a higher level is something which players relish, and should act as motivation for us tonight. We go into the game in good spirits following Saturday’s win against Walsall, it was a performance I was delighted with. Our aim is to continue our run of performances and results and today’s game will be a tough ask like the first tie was at their stadium.

“I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing Kyle a speedy recovery”

0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm

In Saturday’s programme I talked about the injury pileup we have at the moment, something which got worse over the weekend with Kyle Dempsey adding to the players unavailable this evening. I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing Kyle a speedy recovery, hopefully the injury isn’t as bad as it maybe looked to us all at first on Saturday, although we aren’t yet able to put any timescale on a return. Finally, I’d like to wish all the players, staff and directors of Shrewsbury a safe journey home this evening. Enjoy the game,

DEVANTECOLE COLE - FROM CITY TO FLEETWOOD By David Mitchell

Is having a famous father a help or otherwise?

Devante Cole was born in May 1995, just four months after father Andy had signed for Manchester United. Despite this, Cole junior was to begin his football career at an early age across the city with the Sky Blues.

“It’s never been a problem for me,” answered Devante. ‘Other people will always see it differently, though, judging me because of him. That’s how it’s going to be. There might be some similarities between us but I don’t think we are the same type of players. Dad has given me good advice, particularly in the last two or three years. He just wants me to do my best.”

“I trained with Manchester City from about the age of seven. Fleetwood’s George Glendon was around at the time. Another was Reading’s George Evans. We’ve moved up the ages together and are still very close. We started on Tuesday nights and then it built up as we got older. When you are young you don’t appreciate the size and history of such a club. You just enjoy playing football. Thierry Henry was my hero growing up.” Devante became part of the England set-up at the age of sixteen. “When you get to 14 and you see people playing in the Victory Shield games you start hoping you can get that chance. I was buzzing when it came. I had a few good years and it helped my development. “By around fifteen or sixteen you start realising what the game is all about. It felt as if it was what I wanted to do. I wasn’t interested in doing anything else. We learnt a lot of lessons at City, what to watch out for and how to handle social media. It’s all part and parcel of growing up. There was a lot of good advice and some great coaching. I had Patrick Vieira as my coach for two years. He was really good for me.’”

“When you are young you don’t appreciate the size and history of such a club” 44 || WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM

There was a chance to see Champions League football close up. “The Champions League experience was really good. If the first team were playing Bayern Munich, for instance, the youngsters of the two sides would play each other earlier in the day. Then we would watch the first team and fly back together if away.”

Devante was grateful for the upbringing at Manchester City but it was eventually time to gain experience in the real world of football. In the 201415 season he played on loan for two clubs, some miles apart. “Barnsley was another world. I really enjoyed it for about half a season. It’s one of my favourite places where I’ve played. There was a good set of lads and fans. Manager, Danny Wilson, was very helpful. MK Dons was a newer club and flying at the time.” Devante tasted success as MK Dons were promoted to the Championship behind Bristol City. It had been a good season with contrasting clubs, 38 appearances and ten goals. Then it was back to Manchester City. “My contract was up. There were thoughts of signing a new one but I decided it best to go out and sign somewhere else. Bradford City had history and a huge support. It was really good to play there. I scored on debut against Port Vale, a great moment which did me a lot of good with the fans!” After twenty-four games for the Bantams, Cole joined Fleetwood Town in the 2016 January transfer window. His debut was at home to Doncaster. There have been thirty-nine appearances so far. “It took me a while to find my feet but I feel I’ve done it now. I want to keep putting in the performances like I have been doing. I just want the goals I’ve scored at other places. I’ve always been used to scoring goals.”

By David Mitchell In his five and a half years at Fleetwood Town, Paul Collier has held diverse roles covering media, finance, PR and publicity. Now he combines a weekly role on behalf of the club, co-ordinating local and national requests for charity help, with a matchday role as a host, based in the Red and Whites Bar next to Jim’s Bar in the Memorial Stand. It is eminently suited to an engaging man who likes nothing more than to chat about all things football. “I arrive at Highbury around eleven to eleven fifteen. After checking emails, I will wander over to the Red and Whites about twelve o’clock and make sure that everything is set up as it should be. As well as being a diner for a sit down meal, it is also a guest lounge for visiting officials, club guests, scouts and players’ families. It is somewhere to relax before the game. “The referee and his three assistants will come across at about twelve thirty. Sometimes there might be a referee’s assessor as well. It is important to make them all feel welcome. Every detail matters.” The rise of Fleetwood Town has attracted more scouts over the years. “There might be as few as four, sometimes up to 15 or 20. I will get a list each time from Steve Metcalf in the Ticket Office. It gives me a chance to see who is with us and I usually have a couple of minutes chat here and there, subtly trying to gauge where they are from!

“The scouts receive a team sheet off me at around two o’clock and some might jot down a few pre-match notes. I make sure all my guests have the team news and take some copies into Jim’s Bar as well. “Red and Whites empties by five to three. The people I deal with are usually pretty mindful of the time. I will watch the first half from either the Highbury or the Parkside Stand and be back at my post about five minutes before half time. “A few minutes before the second half starts there is another exodus. I follow them out and watch the rest of the game.” There will be more engagement for Paul afterwards, in Jim’s Bar. “I will chat with supporters, including away fans. The club are keen for me to get feedback on the match day experience and it is something that I really enjoy. I might be there until half past seven, even eight sometimes! Many comments are positive which shows that we are doing lots right but we don’t rest on our laurels. It is important for the image of the club that we are attentive to every detail.”

Fleetwood and Shrewbury meet tonight in the Second Round Replay of the Emirates FA Cup, but how did both sides get here? Emirates FA Cup First Round: Southport 0-0 Fleetwood Town Uwe Rosler’s side travelled to face National League North side Southport in front of the BT cameras. Jimmy Ryan had a direct free-kick tipped onto the bar by Southport stopper Magnus Norman, while former Town man Jamie Allen had Southport’s best chance. The game ended goalless with both sides forced to go again at Highbury. Emirates FA Cup First Round Replay: Fleetwood Town 4-1 Southport (AET) Aaron Amadi-Holloway marked his full return from injury with a first half strike against Steve Burr’s side at Highbury. Town looked comfortable for large periods before a late Ashley Grimes header forced extra time for the spirited Southport side. However three goals in five minutes from Cian Bolger, Ashley Hunter and Amari’i Bell sealed Fleetwood’s place in the Second Round. Emirates FA Cup First Round: Shrewsbury Town 3-0 Barnet Shrewsbury hosted Sky Bet League Two outfit Barnet at Greenhous Meadow in the first week of November. First half goals from Mat Sadler and Ajay Leitch-Smith and a third from Jack Grimmer meant it was a very comfortable afternoon for Shrews after struggling in the league. Emirates FA Cup Second Round: Shrewsbury Town 0-0 Fleetwood Town Both sides met on the 3 rd December at Greenhous Meadow with both dreaming of potential cup ties against Premier League opposition. The home side had the better of the chances, with Louis Dodds missing a great chance to seal the game, only hitting the inside of Alex Cairns’ post. Junior Brown and Ivan Toney also hit the bar, but both sides will play again tonight to see who will travel to Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City in Round Three.
