gaffer’snotes I’d like to welcome you all to Highbury this afternoon as we take on Walsall. Last weekend we were delighted to earn ourselves the chance to be in the hat for the third round of the FA Cup, and we now have to complete the job in the replay against Shrewsbury on Tuesday evening. At the start of the season it was always our target to be in the FA Cup come January, and the possible tie against Bristol City offers us a big incentive to get through. However, today our focus is on league action as we meet a Walsall who arrive at Highbury on the back of a superb 1-0 win against Sheffield United. That result proved what a good side they can be and today’s game is a challenge we are all looking forward to. We know at Highbury we are a force to be reckoned with and anyone who comes here to face us will come up against a highly motivated side who are full of confidence. This week we have had to announce we’ll be without Jimmy Ryan for the Christmas period, adding to injuries to Ash Eastham, Martyn Woolford and Michael Duckworth. All of those are very experienced players and they will be missed over what will be a busy spell over the festive period. Apart from the muscle injury to Duckworth, all of the others were caused by impact, something we’ve been very unfortunate with and have no reflection at all on our medical team. We have an excellent medical department headed up by Luke Bussey and a superb Sports Scientist in Youl Mawene and they have done an excellent job in preparing the players so far this season. We wish all of our injured players a speedy recovery, they’ll certainly be needed in the new year.
0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm
While the injuries have obviously been a blow to us, like I’ve said before, it’s given other players in the squad a chance, and they are all keen to keep this excellent run we are on going. The unbeaten run is something we are very proud of and we are determined to keep that going in the coming weeks. In the last couple of weeks we’ve had no midweek games and I feel this has done us good, it’s given us the chance to reenforce certain things on the training ground and work with the players. I feel the team are in excellent shape to hopefully produce another good performance this afternoon. Finally, I’d like to welcome all the staff, players and management of Walsall to Highbury, and wish them a safe journey home this evening. Enjoy the game,

CIANBOLGER FROM GAELIC FOOTBALL TO THE EFL By David Mitchell Unlike many of his fellow professionals, Cian Bolger’s early life did not focus on football. “I was born in Celbridge, a little village just outside Dublin, and brought up on Gaelic football and hurling. I played both regularly to around fourteen or fifteen. My dad played Gaelic football for Dublin but the two sports weren’t professional so you couldn’t make a living.” “A friend of Dad’s had a friend who coached football with Cherry Orchard, a schoolboy team based in Ballyfermot near Dublin. I played there for a year before going to St. Kevin’s Boys FC who had a good team with the likes of Robbie Brady and Jeff Hendrick. Lads started to get snapped up and moved on. I signed in the summer of 2007 and Robbie had gone to Manchester United the following January. Seven or eight of us came across the water. At 16, I headed to Leicester. It was a good family club with all the youth team in one house. It was a struggle to be away from home. It took about six months to settle.” A three-year contract was awarded in 2010 but Bolger was to make his Football League debut on loan at Bristol Rovers. It was as part of a 6-1 defeat to today’s opponents, Walsall. “Not a great start but I would add that it was 6-1 when I came on! I had a really good time at Bristol, in three separate spells. It was a great stepping stone.”
“Not many can say that they have played in a Wembley final. It’s something to cherish” 44 || WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM
The low point was a posterior cruciate injury in 2012 which put Bolger out for about four months. It was in a 2-2 draw with Aldershot and the first game back was... a 2-2 draw with Aldershot! “I didn’t realise that, to be honest! I came back, trained at Leicester and rolled my ankle over so was out for another three or four weeks. Once fully fit it was back to Bristol.” In January 2013, there was a move to Bolton.
“It was a frustrating period, not getting the game time I wanted, but I enjoyed my time there all the same. There were some really good people.” While with Bolton, Bolger made loan appearances at Colchester and Southend. The period at Southend became permanent in August 2014, a season which would end with a Wembley appearance. “The play-off final against Wycombe went to penalties. I scored, our keeper saved their next one and we won 7-6. It was a great day and there were about eighteen members of my family watching! Not many can say they have played in a Wembley final. It’s something to cherish.” Having been in and out of the Southend team, the 24 year-old jumped at the chance to go on loan to Bury. “Bury came in with an opportunity to get some game time. It’s a traditional club but the Chairman has backed it with money and there are some great facilities now. I loved my time there.” The central defender’s contract at Southend ended in the summer of 2016 and a few clubs showed interest. “I was impressed by the facilities at Fleetwood but even more by where the Chairman wanted to take the club. I wasn’t in the side immediately, which I understood, but now I’m getting chances and enjoying my football. Scoring is a bonus. I used to nick a few at Bristol Rovers but then goals dried up. As a centre half you should be looking at five or six per season.” Bolger’s career has been heavily influenced by his father. “I never missed a training session because Dad would make sure I got to them, up and down the country. Now he comes over to pretty much every game. We have pubs in Dublin. He shuts them up and takes the early boat in the morning! He will get round any way he can! I am fortunate to have a great support network behind me.”

name: DAVID MITCHELL job: PRESS TEAM By Paul Collier David Mitchell’s association with the Fleetwood Town press team stems seven years. While his role has changed over this period, his importance to the club certainly hasn’t. He recently explained his typical match day. “I tend to arrive at the stadium at about half past one and go straight to the press box. I meet up with Gary Hunt of BBC Radio Lancashire with whom I do the Cod Army player and we confirm our partnership for the afternoon. “I am not required to be with Gary though until ten minutes to three. In the meantime, I tend to chat along the press box to people like Steve Bradshaw of Radio Wave and Rosie Swarbrick from the Gazette.

“This is perhaps to pick up some messages about players, injuries, or the likely team which will come out. “Having been at the club for so long there are many people I know, but you never know who might be here next. The minutes go by quickly but an important time for me is about half past two when the team sheets come out. I try to familiarise myself with the way the teams will set up. “I am in place for ten minutes to three and Gary will cue me in. I will then provide a summary to his commentary which has to be interrupted from time to time when Gary goes back to the BBC Lancashire studio for a match update. Gary and I dovetail well which comes from the
experience of having worked together. I have covered all the press areas and yet commentary has been a new departure for me in the past couple of years. “It is different in that it poses new challenges. For example, you cannot cross something out and replace it once you have said it. I do though find commentary very enjoyable. “At half time I will go to the press room for a sandwich and a coffee and may be catch up with one or two people which I might bring into the second half of the commentary. If there is a lull in play I may say that I caught up with up so and recall something pertinent which has been said. “I find that I have the skill for communication which I have learned from a career previously as a teacher and a head teacher. You learn how to speak at meetings and such like. “The skills have been transferrable and communication has always been very important to me. It is a pleasure to be involved in the press side and I thoroughly enjoy it.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 11 WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 11

ACADEMY DIRECTOR STUART MURDOCH had this to say about CONNOR FINLAYSON. “Connor is a last year scholar who joined us at the beginning of the season from Foxhall Juniors. He spent time in our coaching set up prior to becoming a scholar and has set about his full time training with enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard. After impressing in pre-season with his physical work, unfortunately he picked up an injury which limited his game time. A six foot two centre forward, he has played the central role recently in a front three. He is learning the requirements of the role and is showing steady progress. Now the first years have had time to settle into ‘football life’, the new environment at Poolfoot, being away from home at the Digs, of full time training, we look forward to seeing their progress in the New Year. ”
