fleetreview This month, editor Steve Moody looks at the implications of Brexit, the continuing success of the Fleet Show and why your fleet should consider electric vehicles...

What will Brexit mean for fleets? I’ve spoken to a lot of people in the industry about what might happen if we vote for Brexit this month, and the conversations I’ve had have been as nebulous as the arguments the politicians are making. Certainly there’s a sense of firms keeping their cards close to their chest, and waiting to see what might happen rather than having concrete ideas. Will cars cost more to buy? Will a mini recession on exit have an effect on lending and interest rates? Will there be more money for investment in infrastructure? The simple fact is nobody knows, and nobody seems to be able to tell us. And I think that is why, come this time next month we will have voted to stay in. I think that a lot of people, given a choice between knowns and unknowns, will take the risk averse option.

Fleet Show goes from strength to strength The Fleet Show at Silverstone was a great success, and it was fantastic to stand on the balcony in the Wing and watching hundreds of cars endlessly lapping the famous circuit. There was a real buzz in the three halls too, proving that there’s no substitute for people getting together and talking about their business, despite the digital age making face-to-face interaction less prevalent.

04 / fleetworld.co.uk

In this issue, we’re covering the driving element of the show, but such was its size that the industry products and services and exhibition will have to go in next month’s issue, so if you couldn’t get to the event, you’ll be able to get a feel for it. Next year’s show is already booked and in the diary for Tuesday 11 May 2017. So I hope to see you there.

Why wouldn’t you have an EV? I’ve been driving a Renault ZOE a lot recently, and it’s been fascinating to see how it changes the way you use cars. It is very much a second family car in size and price, but it has become the main everyday vehicle of choice in our family, even though there are often bigger, more powerful petrol and diesel car on the Moody drive. Once you have an electric car to nip to the shops in, to drop the kids off at the many clubs and activities they go to, or to run errands you tend not to use anything else. It feels a bit odd to be chugging around town burning fossil fuels when you could be swishing along in silence. So it will be interesting to see how EVs develop in a business sense. Surely they would make excellent salary sacrifice cars, or superb pool cars for those companies who run around a number of sites. If the price is right, and the journey requirements are met, plenty of businesses would be sold on an electric car.

Car auction independence at risk The independence of UK car auctions is at risk – that’s the message from Matt Dale, director of vehicle remarketing specialist G3. he bold statement comes in the wave of some of the UK’s most well-known auction brands acquiring peripheral motoring businesses that Dale (below) fears may monopolise the whole lifecycle of automotive retail. “It is now three years since British Car Auctions (later renamed BCA) acquired We Buy Any Car,” comments Dale. “This move that was quickly followed by Manheim’s purchase of We Want Any Car, and smaller car buying companies were also subsequently bought out. “At first glance such acquisitions appeared to make sense – the brands were leveraging their knowledge of the automotive industry and diversifying in their operations. But give it further thought and it means the lines have become blurred in the remarketing sector.” Dale’s concern stems from the fact that in every physical auction, there are prime selling slots that a vendor will strive to secure. However, in recent times, Dale claims these coveted slots have been increasingly allocated to the auction house’s own vehicles, to maximise the return from the cars they themselves need to sell.

T

10 / fleetworld.co.uk

“This is obviously to the detriment of other vendors,” he elaborates. “It’s entirely at odds with what an auction should be – an independent remarketer. “What’s more, because organisations such as We Buy Any Car buy the type of vehicles that main dealers and car supermarkets would ordinarily ‘recycle’ in the part exchange process, the playing field is further imbalanced. Of course, everyone has the same opportunity to purchase these cars from members of the public, and the consumer will simply go wherever they get the best return. But I do believe this situation represents a significant conflict of interest for any auction that buys and resells stock.” Believing that, in these instances, neither the vendor or purchaser truly comes first, Dale’s biggest fear lies in where the acquisition trail will end. “Will auction firms move into the fleet and lease markets next, to secure more guaranteed stock for their own remarketing operations?” Dale asks. “Only time will tell, but I think this is a paradigm shift that should be viewed with caution.”

Diesel debate revisited The Insider has been doing his sums on petrol vs diesel…

elcome is the news we are working towards a worldwide harmonised test procedure to identify actual fuel consumption figures based on real-world driving conditions. Except, of course, that these will be less than are currently published, possibly up to 20% worse, leading to an increase in CO2, which in turn will affect employees’ taxable benefit, Vehicle Excise Duty and Class 1A National Insurance contributions. Does the panel think we will see values increase on lower-emitting older cars, and hands up all those who will be hanging onto those cars for longer in an effort to protect our costs? But it reminded me it was time to check up on the diesel versus petrol conundrum again. So I dug out an old spreadsheet and reworked it again to see how the figures stacked up. Typically I check the P11D price differential between petrol and diesel cars to see how one or other will affect Employer’s National Insurance contributions. On a large run of the mill hatchback or estate, the list price differential between diesel and petrol seems to average at about £1,350. At the same time it’s only fair to check the employee’s view in terms of tax payable, and the cost of their private fuel; the latter being further affected according to whether you reimburse using advisory fuel rates or actual cost. Then there are calculations around actual fuel consumption and the real world differences between petrol and diesel engine cars; and the price of fuels, plus any differential between the two. Fuel prices are constantly moving, unfortunately upwards again, but with very little price difference currently between petrol and diesel. What I found interesting was that it wasn’t until average annual mileage dropped to 10,000 miles a year or below, together with a petrol cost which was 4p a litre less than diesel, that the net costs for both types – calculated including projected employer’s

W

12 / fleetworld.co.uk

NI savings on petrol cars – broke even. The net result on our fleet was that the drivers would be approximately £75 per year better off in petrol cars, which I consider negligible, but the company would save £75,000 by remaining in diesel. So you can guess what we’ll be doing. But we are not operating a significant number of cars within the proposed London ULEZ. Supposing I were, then I would have to be considering other factors. Take, for instance, the effect of a ban on allowing any diesel cars in central London. Anything I contract on now could be affected during its time on fleet if the new Mayor sweeps as clean a broom as he promises, and brings in changes before 2020. Euro 6 qualifying cars are accommodated within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) as it was proposed, but if the rules are changed to exclude diesel per se, then we may have a problem. At over £3,000 per year for just one non-compliant car visiting the zone five times a week, you don’t have to multiply that by many vehicles to wipe out the fuel saving. And whilst you may not have many vehicles popping in and out of the London zone, if other cities follow London’s lead, as seems likely, more fleet cars will be affected, and the costs rocket. At that point an all diesel policy becomes less attractive, and a mix of fuels has to be considered. Not such a tidy solution in terms of keeping one’s car policy simple, but cost-effective if you follow the school of thought which promotes seeking multiple small gains added together. And that’s why it’s so important that the Government gives us a clear steer on future policy, in order that we have time to plan and budget properly, in order to get the right cars on fleet. Changes of heart, such as reversing the promise to drop the 3% diesel surcharge, and then allowing the ULEZ to be brought forward whilst possibly changing its parameters, are significantly unhelpful to business.

Brand with a plan A new Vauxhall fleet initiative for servicing SME vehicles is to be welcomed. Curtis Hutchinson, editor of Motor Trader, reports. ast year was a record breaking one for the new car market with over 2.6 million units registered. The subsequent year on year improvements means 2016 could be even bigger. This is all very well in good years where genuine demand from retail and fleet customers is high and there is a hunger for new cars. However, what we've seen for the last five years is the market pushed more than ever as a result of the UK coming out of recession ahead of most west European economies. This prompted car manufacturers to divert cars otherwise destined for left hand drive markets to the UK and underwrite some incredible finance deals to generate retail sales. The process worked, although it means each year dealers are collectively obliged to pre-register hundreds of thousands of new cars to hit their quarterly manufacturer targets. How they go about retailing these cars afterward is pretty much up to them, although the pressure is on to do so quickly but without heavy discounts which could impact residual values. Not an easy task. So, in short, there's an awful lot of pressure on dealers to shift metal yet the dealer margins on new retail cars are slim and have been for years; margins on cars sold to SMEs and local businesses are even thinner, leaving their used car forecourts, where they set the prices and margins, and aftersales to return a profit. The latter obviously has wider ramifications for fleets who depend on franchised workshops to maintain and repair their vehicles. In recent months some car manufacturers have actually been pretty good at adapting to these new market dynamics and are delivering some welcome aftersales initiatives which should benefit SMEs across the country. Both Volkswagen and Mazda have focused heavily on delivering a better aftersales experience for their retail customers and dealers. Vauxhall, however, has gone a step further with a welcome fleet initiative. At the end of April the brand launched a fleet aftersales programme aimed at reducing fleet running costs, simplifying the servicing process and driving work through its dealers' workshops. The company teamed up with EMaC, one the country's leading independent service plan providers, to

L

14 / fleetworld.co.uk

deliver what it claims is the first manufacturer-backed fleet service package to cover both cars and vans. The Fleet Service Plan covers all routine servicing for vehicles in line with the brand's recommended schedules. Extras such as brake fluid and cam belt changes are covered and prices are fixed for the duration of the plan, enabling fleets to better control their costs. What makes the initiative particularly relevant to business customers is that vehicles are covered at any Vauxhall dealership in the UK, not just the local dealer that supplied the vehicle. In this scenario a driver based in Glasgow could book their next service in Birmingham to coincide with a meeting, thus minimising downtime. At the same time Vauxhall also rolled out an extended warranty package for fleets, underwritten by Allianz Global Assistance, which provides cover for up to five years and 150,000 miles on cars and vans. The warranty covers the cost of mechanical and electrical repairs or component changes and includes parts and labour and kicks in when the original warranty ends. Vauxhall said most mechanical or electrical parts fitted to the vehicle are included in the warranty with no excess or hidden extras to pay for. The package also covers the cost of a replacement vehicle rental costing up to £50 per day and a contribution towards overnight accommodation or onward travel if it’s necessary as a result of a covered electrical or mechanical failure. “Vauxhall’s new Fleet Service Plans and Warranties are built to ensure great value and a hassle-free aftersales experience,” said Paul Painter, Vauxhall’s fleet programmes and strategic channel manager. “The flexibility of the plans and warranties allows Vauxhall’s fleet customers to customise them to their individual needs and requirements and both are supported by a network-wide service commitment, delivered in purpose-built facilities with a team of dedicated Vauxhall trained technicians.” Vauxhall may well have hit a sweet spot for SMEs and it's highly likely that other brands will roll out similar initiatives as they move to protect both their fleet customers and dealers.

Q &A John Watkins, executive chairman of Trakm8, on developments within the group and the broader telematics marketplace. What are the plans for the Trakm8 group following its recent acquisitions of Route Monkey and RoadHawk? Trakm8 is currently embedding the Route Monkey optimisation algorithms and services into SWIFT Trakm8’s core fleet management system. Once the complete solution is ready, our customers will be able to run a fully integrated route optimisation, journey download, schedule monitoring, tracking, driver behaviour and ePOD system. A one-stop shop for the entire requirement to manage and monitor their vehicle fleet. The RoadHawk camera product line is being developed to provide better quality video and integration into our telematics solutions. The next development will be an integrated forward and into the cab camera with telematics functionality embedded. The 4G device will transmit high quality video data in real time. The product will also integrate into Trakm8’s telematics driver profiling algorithms for risk and economy. Are smaller fleets realising the benefits of telematics? Yes. Smaller fleets are increasingly finding the benefits in driver profiling and education to reduce fuel and claims. The complexity of telematics solutions is reducing from an ease-of-use point of view with mobile apps and although the solutions themselves are increasingly complex, this ease of use and the value that the data provides make even smaller vehicle fleet operators embrace the technology. Trakm8 has identified the challenges posed by managing smaller fleets and recently developed Trakm8prime. This will allow fleets of up to 75 vehicles to harness the benefits currently supplied to our corporate clients. Its features include real-time tracking, driver behaviour scoring, vehicle health and P11D mileage returns. How can fleets help avoid ‘data overload’? Data collected is now so much more than it was. Data can be collected at one second intervals and can now include the CAN bus data for driver profiling and vehicle service needs; it includes the accelerometer and in some case gyro data for crash detection and driver behaviour analysis. It includes integration into digital tachographs for driver hours and compliance. Some customers can absorb raw data and turn this

18 / fleetworld.co.uk

into useful management information as they have good in-house analytical skills so our job is to provide the best quality data possible. Other customers need us to turn data into quick-to-assimilate information in order to modify their operational behaviour as a result and improve their efficiency. It is both the quality of these insights and the ease in which they are presented that is key to not providing ‘data overload’. When selecting the telematics supplier, the fleet manager needs to be sure that the working system is installed satisfactorily whilst ensuring that those insights are properly delivered and the financial gains achieved. What can we expect from future telematics technology? Telematics technology is becoming less expensive to implement with lower cost hardware, communications and the elimination of installation cost through the use of self-fit devices. The data derived delivers ever better insights into the operational efficiency of fleets. I expect these trends to continue, with fully integrated cameras becoming commonplace. The growth of telematics implementation will enable better predictions around the vehicle repair requirements. Trakm8 already has an exceptionally accurate algorithm for predicting starter battery failures before they happen, with the service gains that brings. Using the automotive expertise within our engineering team, we’re working on an array of predictive service requirements using vehicle and diagnostic data. After fuel efficiency gains from better optimisation of loads, journeys and driver behaviour, the risk and crash detection gains, vehicle service and maintenance gains will be the third major derived benefit. How much should data hacking be of concern? Trakm8 takes hacking extremely seriously. We are privy to personal data and must take every possible precaution to protect it. There is also a need to protect devices connected to the CAN bus against exploitation. Trakm8 operates to ISO 27001 standards and has had external analysis of the company’s systems to ensure that we remain secure as the threat landscape evolves. While concerns exist, the telematics supplier should have them under control so that the fleet operator need not worry!

In Sight Camera-based driver assistance systems are adding vitally important calibration work to a windscreen replacement. As they become more common, Alex Grant finds out what the implications are for fleets. An extra eye on the road ADAS, an acronym for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, is a collective name for the semi-autonomous features fitted to a growing number of cars. It’s a transformative set of technologies with proven safety and insurance cost benefits for fleets, the more advanced systems including windscreen-mounted cameras for detailed monitoring of traffic conditions and lane markings ahead. These rely on accurate data, and even a small inaccuracy in the position of the camera can be detrimental to its effectiveness. Yet research by Autoglass found two thirds of UK drivers and a third of dealers lack awareness of these systems, while 68% of drivers ignore advice to have them calibrated after a windscreen replacement. And, with 40% of the vehicle parc – significantly higher among fleets, where the average age of cars is lower – set to feature ADAS by 2020, it’s about to become a common job.

What does calibration involve? The process varies by manufacturer, but the end goal is restoring the original alignment of the camera so it can function correctly. Some systems are able to self-calibrate by driving the car on the road and letting them recognise specific features, while plugged into a diagnostic tool. The rest require static calibration, which involves parking the car on level ground with the wheels positioned using tracking lasers and the forward-facing camera (or cameras) aimed at a target board – each manufacturer has

22 / fleetworld.co.uk

its own. Then the software is triggered using a handheld tool to check for alignment faults. The process takes between one and two hours, on top of the windscreen replacement, and, according to National Windscreens, around 75% of cars are calibrated this way. Until recently, static calubration has meant taking the car to a franchised dealer, but it’s now offered at 10% of Autoglass depots and all National Windscreens sites.

What does this cost? At the moment, it isn’t directly costing fleets anything. Thatcham Research says the costs are being picked up by insurers who view the systems as being too valuable not to be set up properly. The process varies depending what features are fitted to the car, but calibration work usually adds £200–£300 to the cost of the windscreen repair. While that’s a major outlay for insurers, Thatcham Research sees reduced equipment costs bringing the prices down, and is working with manufacturers to ensure that future systems and vehicles are designed with the windscreen replacement in mind. It will also publish a Code of Practice this year to make sure the work is done correctly. “Fleet managers need to ensure that when they get vehicle windscreens replaced, or refitted, that they ensure that correct recalibration procedures are followed by their suppliers,” says Andrew Miller, chief technical officer at Thatcham Research.

SPOTLIGHT Peugeot 3008

Tough stuff Likely to be a key model for Peugeot’s user-chooser presence, the new 3008 makes a decisive step into the centre of the crossover sector, as Alex Grant explains.

Less weight, more space While the outgoing 3008 scored well on functionality, it was a little hamstrung as a crossover by its MPV-like styling. That’s not a mistake Peugeot is making twice – the new version looks, perhaps predictably, like a scaled up 308, with a flat bonnet and smaller window line to give it more muscularity. Visually, it’s unmistakeably an SUV, and that’s important. Using the 308’s platform has saved an average of 100kg compared to the old car, despite a slight overall increase in size. Exterior dimensions are almost the same as the benchmark Nissan Qashqai, with more space in the cabin and almost a 25% increase in boot capacity – this is now one of the best in the class. All seats except the driver’s can fold flat, accommodating loads up to three metres long. They’re MPV qualities that crossover customers desire.

CO2 from 100g/km The engine line-up is similar to the 3008. Likely to be the preferred fleet option, diesels comprise 100 and 120bhp versions of the 1.6-litre BlueHDI engine, alongside the 2.0-litre unit with 150 or 180bhp and 1.2 and 1.6-litre turbocharged petrols. The BlueHDI 120 is the most efficient, emitting 100g/km CO2 – equating to almost 75mpg, which puts this among the most economical C-SUVs on the market. Automatic transmissions are offered on all except the BlueHDI 100, and Peugeot is offering its allterrain traction control system – Advanced Grip Control – in the 3008, which suggests there won’t be a four-wheel drive version, and there’s no news on a hybrid either. As a clever move to avoid sacrificing efficiency on top trims, speccing the 19-inch wheels doesn’t mean having wider tyres.

24 / fleetworld.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT_Pug3008_FW_June16_Layout 1 03/06/2016 18:58 Page 2

Moving upmarket The 3008 puts a big emphasis on technology. Like the 308, most of the physical controls have been moved to the eightinch central display, and the infotainment system features full Android and Apple smartphone streaming, a capacitive touchscreen and navigation with TomTom live traffic information. Early photography shows a 12.3-inch customisable screen in front of the driver, though this is likely to be optional. To be expected, there’s a full suite of driver assistance features available too, including active braking and lane-keeping, traffic sign recognition and a simulated topdown view for easier parking. The 3008 also features a docking station to charge an electric bike or scooter in the boot.

FLEET FACT Only the RenaultNissan crossovers offer lower CO2 emissions than the 3008.

What we think... The C-SUV segment is a part of the market defined as much by design as it is by functionality, and the 3008 finally looks right for the job. Peugeot says this sector accounts for 10% of European sales, and that’s exactly where its newcomer will aim. But with competitive newcomers from SEAT and Renault and the biggest-selling models looking better than ever, Peugeot will still have its work cut out finding a place on choice lists. AG

About the same size as a Volkswagen Touareg and about the same price as a Hyundai Santa Fe, it will help fill a gap at the end of its large car line-up, where the S-MAX and Galaxy have been partially doing the job of making up for the drop in D-segment car sales. Alfa Romeo Giulia Can Alfa Romeo emerge from the shadow of the German premium brands? Matt Robinson finds out. SECTOR Compact Executive PRICE TBC (from £32,000) FUEL 33.2–67.3mpg CO2 109–198g/km

arald J Wester, Alfa Romeo’s CEO, is a straight-talking man. The German-born boss of the Italian firm is trying to turn around the fortunes of a company that has fallen a long way from grace with a succession of mediocre products. In his own words, Alfa’s latest tactic is to ‘press the reset button’ and at the breaking of the firm’s new dawn is the Giulia saloon. When one journalist asks him at the press conference if the Giulia is make-or-break time for Alfa Romeo, Wester is blunt and to the point: “Yes. Absolutely.” The Giulia has a tough task ahead, though, because it enters a marketplace dominated by the Teutonic triumvirate of the Audi A4, the BMW 3 Series and the MercedesBenz C-Class. Things became trickier for Alfa when Jaguar launched the excellent XE last year, while a revitalised Volvo S60 – with that resurgent company’s Scalable Product Architecture and Drive-E technology – cannot be too far away. There’s also the Lexus IS and high-specification Ford Mondeos and Volkswagen Passats to overcome, let alone years’ worth of customer dissatisfaction that Alfa has unwittingly built up. design is, the 8.8-inch infotainment console screen looks However, relief. There’s also a 148bhp/280lb ft variant, but Alfa, not giving out all UK data yet ahead of the September on-sale date, only quoted one set of data: 67.3mpg and 109g/km. The 2.2 is an all-aluminium unit and it’s strong, providing the car with ample acceleration. What the Alfa really excels on is the ride-handling balance. On the former, it’s delightfully supple and comfy, no matter what the roads throw at it. High levels of sound suppression ensure incredible refinement, while the rear-drive platform makes it thoroughly entertaining to drive. It’s blessed with sharp, accurate steering and impressive body control, so while it can do motorway work as effectively as any fleet car should, it will prove endearing to drivers who take the time to seek out the quieter, less direct roads of the UK. There’s no doubt the new Alfa deserves to ‘make it’. This is a hugely likeable, supremely competent car and one that finally gives the competition something to fret about. It might lack polish in one or two areas, but the Giulia is a sparkling piece of kit and the best Alfa Romeo for decades.

And outside on the Copse Runway, Thatcham Research held demonstrations of a number of safety systems including crash avoidance technology and advanced road train technology. The event’s organisers were delighted with reactions to this year’s event from exhibitors and visitors alike. Fleet Show director and publisher of Fleet World, Jerry Ramsdale, said: “We are thrilled to hear that both exhibitors and visitors had a great day at this year’s Fleet Show. “As ever with the event, it was our intention to provide an educational event that comprises fleet training, an exhibition, networking and test-driving to justify spending a whole day out of the office. “We would like to thank the exhibitors for all their hard work, and the hundreds of visitors who took time out of their busy schedules to join us at Silverstone.”

KIA The new Sportage has more than continued the momentum started by its predecessor, becoming one of the UK’s fastest-selling cars in its first months on sale. The new model was available to drive at Silverstone alongside the brand’s expanding product portfolio, including a refreshed version of the cee’d launched last year and the new Sorento, which is attracting top-heavy demand in the UK.

BMW Having shown its potential in the i sub-brand, BMW’s electric vehicle technology will launch across its mainstream product portfolio under the iPerformance badge, beginning with the X5, 2 Series Active Tourer and 3 Series – all of which were on show.

CITROËN Citroën showed off the multi-award winning C4 Cactus, the spacious Grand C4 Picasso and was highlighting it ranges of engines: the PureTech petrol and BlueHDi engines. There was also the chance to see the all new Citroën Dispatch van featuring its clever hands-free sliding side door.

FIAT

MAZDA

Silverstone hosted the latest additions to Fiat’s globally popular 500 lineup, including the updated version of the chic city car and its crossover sibling, the 500X. This is to be a formative year for the brand in fleet, with the Tipo hatch and estate putting it back into core corporate sectors, while the new 124 roadster will offer open-top Italian motoring for user-choosers.

Mazda proved exceptionally popular thanks to passenger laps in the brilliant MX-5, while it also had the rest of its range available for more sober analysis once the adrenalin has stopped pumping, in the form of the new CX-3, CX-5 and Mazda6, among others.

→ TEST DRIVING VOLVO Volvo’s product revival is well underway, and the S90 and V90 executive saloons are due later this year. Silverstone marked the UK debut of the XC90 Excellence, a chauffeurhoned version of the SUV, alongside the 49g/km plug-in hybrid version, the latter of which was available to drive.

JEEP The iconic American off-road brand is expanding its business-friendly model range, offering genuine off-road ability and unmistakeable Jeep design with a line-up of competitive new diesel engines and twowheel drive versions for fleets. Currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, it’s promising plenty to get excited about in the near future.

TESLA The first half of 2016 has been busy for Tesla, with upgrades for the Model X SUV ahead of its European launch, and a major update for the Model S, which was on show at Silverstone. Both are precursors for the Model 3, which will take on the compact executive segment in 2018.

MINI

PEUGEOT Peugeot is rediscovering its sportier side, with acclaimed GTI versions of the 208 and 308 leading the charge. For company car drivers, that lineage is accessible through warm GT versions and stylish GT-Line models, each available with lowCO2 diesel engines to keep costs down.

A familiar name, but a new concept, the Clubman takes MINI’s unique character, and scales it up to a family-friendly premium hatchback. Sure to find favour with design-conscious user-choosers, the Clubman is soon to gain a 99g/km One D version, and was available to drive in core Cooper D and four-wheel drive Cooper SD form at Fleet Show 2016.

QUITTING LETS NICK BREATHE EASY

Aiming to halve corporate emissions and save £140,000* on contract hire and fuel. By quitting a conventional fleet for petrol full hybrids, Nick is helping to cut Itec’s CO2, NOx and particulate emissions by 50%. Thanks to lower BIK, drivers will also pocket average tax savings worth £1,200 each over the next three years. And, as contract hire and fuel costs will also fall by £140,000, Nick can breathe easy too.

HONDA MOTORCYCLES

INFINITI Infiniti has its sights set on significant growth in Europe, and the Q30 hatchback and its QX30 crossover sibling are the tools for the job. Both built in Sunderland – for global markets – they’re aiming to stand out with swooping bodylines and high technology, and established premium hatchbacks on their hit list.

ALFA ROMEO

SEAT Making its UK debut at Silverstone, the Ateca is a vital launch for SEAT, finally extending the range to include the first of at least two crossovers. Sharing its platform with the Leon, engines include 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels and a cost-effective 1.0-litre petrol turbo for low-mileage business drivers.

RENAULT The Fleet Show marked the UK debut of Renault’s crucial new Megane hatchback, with high demand for test drives throughout the day. Longer, lower and wider than its predecessor, it gets a tablet-like R-Link 2 infotainment system and offers CO2 emissions from 86g/km – next year’s mild-hybrid diesel will take that even lower.

44 / fleetworld.co.uk

With ongoing pressure on CO2 emissions and fuel costs, switching to two wheels has never made more sense. Honda’s range spans urban scooters to long-distance tourers and sports bikes, backed by the first specialist motorcycle fleet dealer network in the UK, to keep businesses moving.

The Giulietta appeared at Silverstone following a complementary refresh inspired by the forthcoming Giulia saloon – a crucial launch for the brand. New versions include a 118bhp diesel engine equipped with the twin-clutch transmission, emitting 99g/km CO2, as well as a generously equipped Tecnica trim aimed at the corporate market.

TOYOTA Toyota’s expertise in hybrids is unsurpassed, and it used Fleet Show 2016 to illustrate this with the superb new Prius. While eco driving might not be the first thing that comes to mind on a grand prix track, drivers were achieving some remarkable fuel economy, illustrating just how well the technology now works. Also, the firm brought the new RAV4 Hybrid crossover and Lexus RX 450h SUV, as well as offering a glimpse at hydrogen fuel cell technology with the remarkable Mirai.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER The F-PACE was one of the stars of the Silverstone show and a number of the new sporting SUVs were on track from the start of the day until the end, illustrating the huge demand there will be for the car from corporate users. With new XEs and XFs also available to drive and the Land Rover and Range Rover products always popular for a cruise around the track, it was a busy day for the brand.

THE NEW ALFA GIULIETTA TECNICA. GEARED TOWARDS BUSINESS. The New Alfa Giulietta Tecnica has plenty to catch the eye. Its evolved, sporty exterior includes free metallic paint and privacy glass, while the new stylish interior is now even more refined. The long list of standard features include dual zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors and the new Uconnect LIVE service that keeps you connected to your world with real-time traffic reports, music, news and the latest social network feeds.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO...? New ‘Go Ultra Low Companies’ initiative acknowledges and rewards British companies that have taken the industry lead and included electric vehicles on their fleets. he UK has been leading the charge to switch over to electric vehicles across Europe, with 10,639 new electric cars registered in the UK between January and March 2016. That’s more than any other EU country and 23% higher than the same period last year. Overall there are now over 60,000 electric car drivers in the UK, helped by the number of organisations that have encouraged employees to choose electric. The number of electric vehicles registered to UK businesses has increased by 36 per cent so far in 2016, compared with the same period in 2015. To recognise these important contributions, Go Ultra Low, the pioneering joint Government and industry campaign to encourage take-up of EVs, has launched the ‘Go Ultra Low Companies’ initiative, to recognise organisations that are driving EV acceptance. Among the first companies to be awarded 'Go Ultra Low Company' status were: AMT Vehicle Rental; Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust; Environment Agency; Fleetdrive Electric; eConnect Cars; Gnewt Cargo; Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade; Manchester Metropolitan University; Microsoft UK and University of Birmingham. Six per cent of Microsoft’s car fleet is already made up of EVs and there are plans to raise this share to 15 per cent by October and 20 per cent by April 2017. The University of Birmingham runs 15 plug-in cars and vans, which represents 16 per cent of its total fleet. London Fire Brigade’s car fleet will become 100 per cent electric in 2016, with a current total of 57 vehicles.

T

Huge fuel and tax savings “I would encourage other businesses to learn from these Go Ultra Low companies and benefit from the huge fuel and tax savings offered by electric vehicles,” says Transport Minister, Andrew Jones MP, “The UK is a world leader in the uptake of low emission vehicles and our long-term economic plan is investing £600 million by 2020 to improve air quality, create jobs and achieve our goal of every new car and van in the UK being ultra-low emission by 2040.” To qualify for Go Ultra Low company status, public and private sector organisations must already be using EVs or offering them to employees as company cars and give a commitment to switch at least five per cent of their vehicle fleet over to EVs by 2020. This reflects Government forecasts that EVs will make up five per cent of total new car registrations by 2020.

Gnewt Cargo

To learn more about the Go Ultra Low Companies initiative and apply to become a Go Ultra Low Company visit goultralow.com/fleet Environment Agency Dale Eynon, head of Fleet Services at the Environment Agency, said: “The Environment Agency is fully committed to providing the most sustainable, cost efficient and fit for purpose fleet that supports the delivery of our vital work in protecting the environment. We operate a fleet of over 100 pure electric and electric hybrid vehicles (cars and commercials) and are looking to increase this over the next 12 months.” University of Birmingham

Monica Guise, Sustainable Logistics Manager, University of Birmingham (above), commented: “The University of Birmingham is actively committed to seeking innovative ways to reduce carbon emissions from its transport fleet and has seen a number of benefits through the use of electric vehicles. Being part of Go Ultra Low enables the University to share its best practice and learnings with other organisations looking to incorporate the use of electric vehicles in their day-to-day activities.” The Birmingham University fleet includes electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. These include SUVs, cars and light commercial vehicles. “The University has over 25,000 students and staff, so we operate very much as a small town,” explains Guise, “Our light CV fleet is very diverse including refrigerated vehicles, vans for tradespeople and waste and recycling vehicles.” The university also has a large fleet of cars working around the university sites and beyond. “Because of that diversity and the profile of our university, it has given us a good platform to increase the number of our EVs,” continues Guise, “Most of our vehicles cover less than 10,000 miles a year, which is a perfect profile for electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.”

Gnewt Cargo is a ‘Last Mile’, delivery company operating mainly in central London and the company uses all electric vehicles, “We were always of the opinion that drivers we recruited from outside the business who were used to a traditional diesel powered vehicle might be resistant to electric vehicles,” says Sam Clarke, founder of Gnewt Cargo (above), “Actually, the reality is that when they have tried the vehicle, they have been far more receptive to the vehicle than we ever would have imagined. They like the way that the vehicles drive – they’re smooth and comfortable with no engine ticking over constantly in London traffic. One particular driver had an issue with his left knee that has gone away now, because he does not need to use his left leg, whereas before he was forever back and forth on the clutch pedal. So there’s just a warming sensation for us that these drivers haven’t gone in thinking it was going to be the worst thing ever and then when they have driven the vehicles they have enjoyed the driving experience that is an electric vehicle.” Change, for the better... The growing number of company EVs means that companies are re-designing their car parks to accommodate EV charging points. This includes a major leasing company which is currently building a new head office. The car park will incorporate charging points and will also include ‘waiting’ bays. Car drivers whose cars have been re-charged will receive texts when the car is fully charged, the next waiting driver can then be sent a message telling them that they can now start charging.

SWOT_FW_June16 03/06/2016 19:23 Page 1

SWOTTeam This month the SWOT Team analyses the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for the new Jaguar F-PACE against its closest rivals. Here is what they have to say...

Strengths

Weaknesses

Opportunities

Threats

GA The new kid on the block – great looks in a dynamic package with an aspirational badge. Spot on in terms of MPG and emissions, strong RVs offset the higher price.

GA Rival products have enjoyed mega success and have very strong brand loyalty, which could limit Jaguar’s potential.

GA A mega popular sector and a fresh face won’t do any harm. There’s certainly enough appetite for it.

GA Some buyers will default to the rival German products, and Land Rover.

AC Although this will be the volume-selling engine, Jaguar may have missed a trick only offering the 3.0d engine in the top-of-the-range S version. This means forking out in excess of £50,000, which puts it out of reach for many.

AC Demand for this car will be strong and customers will be very happy with their decision. It offers more practicality than many of its main rivals and is among the very best driver’s cars in this segment.

AC Roomier than the X3 or Macan, which offer a similarly sporty drive. Slightly bigger than the segment norm, which makes it very good value. Should enjoy excellent RVs, and equipment levels in the R-Sport trim are good. Conquests from larger SUVs, such as X5 and Q7, are likely. MJ Established Jaguar brand strengths with dynamic handling. Complete standard equipment means no compromises for choosing the entry model. MW Drivers want a stylish, practical car with acceptable fuel economy, the F-Pace delivers at a great price. But so do rivals.

52 / fleetworld.co.uk

MJ A higher power diesel between the 178bhp and the 296bhp, and possibly in 2WD, will be important in future. Handling deserves more than the 178bhp delivers. Not intended for proper off-road work. MW Can this segment’s momentum be maintained? Demand is huge right now, but who will buy the used cars if there is a downturn? At some stage there will be losers.

MJ A huge opportunity to challenge the on-road biased competition including more exotic products such as Porsche Macan. JLR’s challenge is to manage UK supply, as demand is high. MW It will bring new customers into dealers, and pricing looks attractive. The gap between premium and nonpremium is narrowing, so there may be opportunities to take customers from other brands.

AC The main threats come from the others in this group, as well as the Audi Q5. MJ This car can take on both its peers and more costly products. But there is good competition with more to come over and above this group. MW This is the second segment to suffer (after sports cars) if the market downturns. The amount being sold might have a detrimental effect for the manufacturers and owners. The threat is from the amount that will be in the market over the coming years. While they are in demand and flavour of the month, then all will be fine.

INTERVIEW Keith Allen, ARI Fleet

Bringing greater insight ARI Fleet is geared up for businesses with highly complex, bespoke needs, MD Keith Allen tells Steve Moody. eith Allen is in a good mood. He bounds into the boardroom at ARI’s headquarters in Chippenham telling me about a number of deals signed just that week, which illustrate how the approach they are taking is beginning to pay dividends. The crux of the matter is that ARI’s growth has been steady rather than spectacular. This is totally understandable; the business has undergone some big changes with Allen at the helm as managing director since 2012, including a new management team (most notably sales and marketing director Jason Chamberlain and operations director Matt Cranny, also with Allen in the boardroom), new technology platforms and a readjustment of its target markets. While it still deals with car fleets, the “sweet spot” as Allen says, is in the commercial sector, where ARI’s expertise and ability to add value are maximised. Founded in 1948 by the Holman Automotive Group, ARI has grown into the largest privately held vehicle fleet management company in the world with a global workforce of more than 2,800 throughout North America, the UK, Europe and Hong Kong, managing more than one million vehicles. ARI now manages around 50,000 vehicles in the UK. While that may not sound a huge number in the context of some fleet businesses, it is the type of vehicle within ARI’s portfolio which perhaps tells the true story. ARI’s customers are not running high volume, low regard fleets where cars or vans are brought in, run for three or four years and defleeted having barely seen any fleet management in that time. They are generally “core to the operational running of the business,” notes Cranny, and as such are high value and very carefully managed. “Without wanting it to sound like a cliché, ARI is starting to motor,” says Allen. “It’s not your everyday, vanilla fleet management business. What we offer is a set of skills and technologies for those businesses where fleet is essential to their everyday operation. What we aim for is that every company we work with feels like they are our only customer. “I think the value of what we offer is that this is a familyowned business, looking to grow in a solid, sustainable way over the long term and deliver simple solutions for complex problems. So the investment in technology and systems is undertaken with that strategy in mind, delivering a family service with a corporate mindset and fostering customer loyalty. “We spend our customers’ money every day and we are acutely aware of the responsibility it brings. We recognise that we have to get it right first time, ensuring they get the best prices and service and delivering on our promises. “Customers can track everything through our fleet management platform ARI insights, and for us it’s about unbundling the services, looking at each area and then justifying what we are doing and why we are doing it. That’s why I say it’s not a

K

54 / fleetworld.co.uk

vanilla product – what we offer is a bespoke, managed service for businesses looking to really drill down into every aspect of their fleet and ensure that cost, efficiency, downtime and all other aspects are extremely closely managed.” Chamberlain adds: “That’s how we can add more value for the complex, vocational fleets and the commercial sector as a whole. We’re not trying to be all things to all people. There’s still a place for a business that wants to offer contract hire with all the extras bolted on for one simple monthly cost, and the customer is happy with that. Allen concurs. “More often than not, we work with firms which already have in-house fleet expertise, so that it’s 50% their skills and 50% ours,” he says. The result of ARI’s expansion is a wide range of new products and services designed to enhance complex commercial fleet operations. It has a rental product that won a Fleet World Honour for the scalable, flexible way it provides vehicles, a driver risk management programme, as well as a multi-bid product, Pay As You Go SMR and accident management, dealing with customers’ requirements 24/7, 365 days a year. One of ARI’s strengths is the technology it can bring to bear; an advantage of being part of a large American company. By coupling customers’ vehicle telematics data with its ARI insights platform, ARI is helping customers drill down to the minutiae of fleet running, to see not just where each vehicle is, but how it has been running, what its downtime is, itemised parts costs and the exact moments when it arrives at or leaves an ARI garage. All of the garages that sign up to ARI’s network are running technology which reports when the vehicle rolls onto its forecourt. So, when there’s a problem and the fleet manager is told the vehicle is at a garage or being picked up by a breakdown service, instead of the usual issue of wondering when or if work is being done, they can see exactly what is going on in real time. The technology ARI is developing is even allowing it to predict problems for specific fleets or vehicles by crunching the vast amount of data it has, in turn allowing it to come up with individualised service schedules that forestall issues, and so minimise downtime. It’s an impressively slick operation, with a lot of expertise. And there’s a sense around the ARI building of calmly getting the job done. Allen adds: “Everybody is talking about how you manage ‘big data’ and drill down to a more granular level. But we’ve been doing it for a long time across the globe and focusing on ‘smart data’. Just one vehicle will produce hundreds of data points a year, but that data means nothing without having the tools and expertise to understand, in real-time, what it’s telling you or what’s going to happen next as a result. After all, our customers’ vehicles are integral to the success of their business and no one recognises that more than us.”

flashback a look back at the company cars of yesteryear

model Citroën XM

era 1989-2000

he executive car landscape was rather different when Citroën launched the XM in the UK at the end of the 1980s. And, taking on a segment full of three-box saloons spanning what we’d now call ‘mainstream’ and ‘premium’ brands, the French company’s luxurious wedge was in a class of its own anyway. This was never intended to be a wallflower. Citroën stipulated a versatile hatchback, and the Bertonedesigned XM was unmistakeably part of the family, its long front overhang, flat ‘Kamm tail’ back end and kicked-up shoulderline linked back to the SM, while the heavily-glazed silhouette created less drag than a Nissan LEAF. Just as the BX had shared a platform with the Peugeot 405, the XM was co-developed with the 605. But the suspension was as unique as the styling, using a computer-controlled version of Citroën’s fully-independent Hydropneumatic suspension which was able to intelligently vary its stiffness based on the road conditions and driving style. Widely praised at the launch, it offered flat cornering and unrivalled comfort. It was generously equipped, too. All UK cars featured electrically adjustable seats and an electric sunroof, top-spec SEi and SED versions included air conditioning and soft leather upholstery and the XM was one of the first models to feature a flip key. For added durability, three quarters of the bodywork was galvanised to avoid rust, and vulnerable sections were treated with gravel-resistant primer for extra durability. At launch, the range comprised two 2.0-litre four-

cylinder petrol engines – 115bhp with a carburettor, or 130bhp with electronic fuel injection – and two diesel engines, only one of which was turbocharged, while senior executives could opt up to the 170bhp 3.0-litre V6. Matching the performance available elsewhere in the class, this was augmented by a 24-valve V6 with 200bhp from 1991, and a 141bhp 2.0-litre petrol turbo from 1992. That line-up changed very little during its 11 years on sale. Citroën added the Break estate in 1992, offering class-leading load space, and the heaviest update came three years later with a Xantia-like grille, reworked interior and refreshed engine range. None of which helped sales. The XM was marred by quality problems, particularly during its early years. Citroën had put the first 100 production cars through a rigorous durability test to iron out pre-launch issues, but it quickly developed a reputation for electrical gremlins, leaks and expensive repairs. Despite developing ‘complex surface’ headlights with separate dipped and main beam reflectors, drivers also bemoaned the lack of visibility at night. But – good or bad – that made this an exclusive choice, as well as an avant-garde one, for the Nineties executive. By the time production finished in 2000, the premium brands were diversifying into compact segments and mainstream brands were starting to avoid large cars. But, with newly independent DS Automobiles looking for customer conquests from the XM’s old rivals, perhaps the market hasn’t changed beyond recognition after all.

FEATURE Licence Checking

One year after the abolition of the paper driving licence counterpart, we look at how fleet software companies have risen to the challenge of integrating with the new online DVLA licence checking system. By Katie Beck.

FEATURE_LicenceCheck_FW_June16_Layout 1 03/06/2016 18:50 Page 2

WORKING IN

HARMONY fter years of toing and froing on the start date and concerns about how the whole system would cope with the upheaval, the DVLA confirmed that the paper counterpart of the UK driving licence would be abolished on 8 June 2015. From this date onwards, the driver’s licence (whether photocard or paper) remains the official document that shows what vehicles a person is permitted to drive; but the driver record held by DVLA is now the only legal source of penalty point and endorsement information.

A

DVLA online system The DVLA launched its own free-of-charge licence checking services a month before the deadline, building on the existing View Driving Licence service. The system allows GB driving licence holders to view their driving record online, and to generate a one-time use code to enable a third party to see their licence status for up to 21 days. Aside from a few, widely-reported teething issues during the system’s first week online, the DVLA system is now running smoothly. Many professionals agree that now the new licence checking system is fully operational, the changeover has, overall, had a positive effect on awareness of duty of care requirements, and the importance of driver details being up-to-date. For companies with more than a couple of drivers, however, using the DVLA system can prove inefficient and the task of checking licence validity can easily fall the bottom of a fleet manager’s to-do list. Overview of risk Citing a recent study that revealed that 87% of motorists wouldn’t tell their employer if they received penalty points whilst driving, Ashley Sowerby, managing director of Chevin Fleet Solutions, believes that having access to an easy to use licence checking system is essential to maintain up-to-date and accurate records. “That’s an incredibly high figure, representing almost nine out of 10 employees,” he says. “Having access to faster checks is very, very useful. We’ve certainly seen the effects of this and based on the interest we’ve seen (three times as many checks since the abolition of the paper licence); we believe that more and more fleet managers will opt to quickly and easily check drivers’ licences in this way.” Chevin offers a Real-Time Driver Licence Checking platform – available either as a standalone product or as part of Chevin’s fleet management offering. The Real-Time Driver Licence Checking software provides automatic batch check-

ing, alerts, reminders and instant updating of records. It works by connecting with the latest DVLA database to enable faster access to driver information – with a service guarantee that all checks are returned within an hour.

Intuitive design Chevin prioritises ease of use for its licence checking software.

When the software is integrated with Chevin’s fleet management system, FleetWave, users can set alerts and reminders for important dates such as license renewal deadlines as well as pull in information relating to fuel cards, repairs and accidents, allocations and costings. All of this information is quickly viewable within in a single location – enabling improved profiling of driver risk. More sophisticated licence checking regimes can also be implemented – for example, to specify more frequent checks for higher mileage drivers or high-risk drivers, such as those with more points on their licence. Reduction of administration As well as improved accuracy, reduction in administration time and paperwork is another key incentive to consider. “The DVLA does offer its own online service for employers to validate employees’ driving licences, but it is not scalable and is administratively time-consuming for any business wanting to check more than just a handful of licences,” says Martin Evans, managing director of Jaama Ltd. “The abolition of the paper licence means that there is simply no realistic alternative to check licences with the DVLA other than through approved suppliers.” Evans reveals that the abolition of the paper-based licence initially caused confusion for fleets; “However, that uncertainty was eased when customers realised there were straight forward methods of obtaining the required data,” he says. “Not only that, but the services available from the likes of Jaama mean employers can now be certain of the

validity of the checks and not be fearful that employees perhaps had two licences, for example. Such rogue drivers had the potential to present their original obsolete ‘clean’ licence, while their ‘new’ licence contained points or had possibly been revoked. With the online checking services, this kind of behaviour is flagged up straight away.”

Clear overview Jaama's online dashboard offers detailed information at the click of a button. Jaama has also reported positive feedback on its newly launched online eConsent service. “The new service is considerably more administratively efficient than previous versions,” says Evans. “Our customers are now able to send an electronic consent rather than producing paper mandates, posting them and then uploading them. A lot of paper-based mandates would previously go missing which would then mean that additional mandates would have to be sent along with the associated administration and postal cost,” he adds. Prioritising Duty of care First Travel Solutions has also developed its own system directly with the DVLA to check driver licences. Part of the First Group, this means that the system is used by First UK Bus to check the details of 15,000 bus drivers.

Call to action: First Travel Solutions' system immediately notifies the fleet manager of any discrepancies.

60 / fleetworld.co.uk

“By working directly with the DVLA, we can have checks performed quickly and efficiently, providing employers with a dashboard of all their drivers’ licence statuses, backed up with helpdesk and account management support from our team,” explains Colin O’Keefe, head of business development at First Travel Solutions. Raising awareness of legal requirements is an important part of bringing customers on board with a new licence checking system. “Organisations already working with us knew the requirements and were regularly checking their employees licences,” says O’Keefe. “By removing the paper portion it has in fact made the process simpler for them. Where education is required is with businesses and large public sector organisations as a whole – we’re having conversations where the awareness that employers have a duty of care to ensure their employees are fully licensed is lacking.” Meeting legal requirements O’Keefe explains that while job descriptions may require new starters to have clean or full driving licences, once details have been taken during the recruitment process, they are quite often filed away and rarely checked again, or rely on the honesty of drivers to admit to any misdemeanours. “Not only are we trying to highlight how we can help with licence checking procedures, we’re actually having to explain why this is required in the first place to some companies,” he says. “Any organisation that requires its employees to drive on business, whether regularly or occasionally, needs to make sure that those drivers have all the right paperwork and are qualified. “Bill in sales may have worked for you for 10 years, but if you haven’t checked his licence since he started you are trusting him to keep you up-to-date with any endorsements or convictions. There’s too much room for error in that approach, particularly when you consider how exposed organisations can be if a disqualified driver has an accident whilst on business. It’s here that a licence checking system can really come into its own.” As well as helping to ensure a fleet is legally managed, integration with a licence checking platform can have financial incentives, too; “We have some customers that have negotiated special premiums with their insurers or brokers as a result of the occupational road risk management programmes they have introduced following partnership with us,” Evans reveals. In some cases this requires notification when individual drivers have notched up more than a specified number of endorsements points (such drivers also attract an additional premium). “Access to such notifications is impossible if a fleet does not have a facility in place to check licences directly with the DVLA through software providers such as Jaama,” he adds.

our fleet Nissan LEAF 30kWh Tekna IN the five years since Nissan launched the LEAF, the electric vehicle landscape has changed markedly. And few areas show this better than public charging. Once a sector defined by small local schemes, roaming was difficult and the cars couldn’t travel far. These days, the range has improved, the points are fast and the network is widespread – particularly Ecotricity’s Electric Highway, which spans most of the motorway network. Behind that, battery chemistry has improved. So the 30kWh battery in the LEAF not only increases the range, but it also charges quicker. That is to say, it still reaches 80% in half an hour from ‘empty’ – not that you never arrive at a service

station like that – but that’s almost as much range as a full charge of the old battery. Granted, a typical range of 120 miles is still short, but my run from home in Cardiff to the office in St Albans is now possible with a single stop half way, instead of two. Aside from rolling the dice with a valet parking company’s driving style, route planning is usually all it takes to go further. Well, almost. Cheap long-distance travel is no longer a secret. There are bottlenecks in the network – Reading Services is one – where lines of EVs (and

often Outlander PHEVs) are waiting for the charging points. With the Electric Highway considering tariffs this year, it’ll be interesting to see whether the hybrid tailbacks alleviate. Alex Grant

Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Zetec Estate

FOLLOWING a recent influx of new options, the oncefamed ‘Mondeo Man’ is far more likely to be a BMW Bloke or Qashqai Chap these days. But Ford has form in this segment, and the latest iteration of its large family car is building on decades of experience. It shows. Aware that we’d be putting it through plenty of longdistance mileage, we opted for the larger 2.0-litre diesel engine rather than the entry-level 1.5-litre, giving it slightly longer legs. It’s proved an effortless way to move around

the country – quiet, never short of power and very efficient too. Ford might struggle to claim its hold as the driver’s car of choice in this segment, but the Mondeo is an easy companion for lengthy trips. It’s also a good looking car. Ours missed out on the scrolling indicators and it’s shod with the smallest wheels, which show up its bulkiness, but the ‘hint of Mustang’ styling bodes well and the bulbous tyres mean it rides brilliantly, with almost no road noise. That latter point is also a credit to Michelin. Over a lengthy winter, our Cross Climate tyres – a summer tyre which is certified for winter use – caused no detrimental effect on handling or fuel economy, even as temperatures rose out of cold-weather tyres’ comfort zone. High-mileage drivers take note next time you’re looking at new rubber. So while a little of the glow has gone from this segment, and Ford’s own products provide reasons to look outside the fleet staple, ‘Mondeo Man’ still has plenty to be very happy with. Alex Grant

Kia Sportage 3 1.7 CRDi

the figures

HAve you noticed that when you get a different car you start to see others on the road? You certainly will if you opt for Kia’s latest Sportage. They are everywhere. It’s hardly surprising to find that in March the fourth generation Sportage was Kia’s best selling new car, while previous generations made up the UK’s fastest selling used models. The latest Sportage is fairly noticeable too, with what Kia calls a ‘bold’ new look, thanks to the enlarged tiger-nose grille and separated lights at the front, slim glasshouse and bulging wheelarches from the sides. There are new petrol and diesel engines on offer, though the fleet-friendly 1.7-litre CRDi that we have is carried over from the last model. It delivers a rather average 114hp, given a kerb weight in excess of 1.5 tonnes, though there’s a more robust 207lb.ft of torque to push things along. Long gearing in the standard six-speed manual box means that progress is relaxed, with 60mph

coming up in 11.1 seconds. You need to drop one or even two gears for an overtake on country roads too. Things improve on longer journeys though, where the Sportage is happy to cruise at motorway speeds all day long. That said and bearing in mind that we’ve only covered a few thousand miles so far, the fuel consumption seems to be some way off Kia’s claimed 61.4mpg average, turning in low-40s in most driving conditions. Our Sportage ‘3’ sits about half way up the specification ladder and includes pretty much everything a business driver might want. It comes with heated leather trim, DAB, Bluetooth, sat-nav, a reversing camera and rear sensors, plus cruise control, auto lights and wipers. There is also a full suite of electronic driver aids on board. Over the coming months we’ll be finding out what makes the Sportage such a popular buy with UK motorists. Dan Gilkes

Volkswagen Passat 1.6 TDI SE Business Estate YOU’LL doubtless have heard about volkswagen’s MQB platform, but it’s not until you live with a car underpinned by it that you realise how good this set-up is. Despite being fractionally shorter than its

predecessor, our Passat has a longer wheelbase thanks to the MQB’s set-up which involves pushing the front wheels far forward in the chassis. What all this tech-talk actually translates into is a car which has masses of legroom in the back (it’s on a par with models from the executive class above), plus an extra 47 litres of luggage space over the old Passat estate. This clever packaging has resulted in a family car that swallows people and luggage yet isn’t too big as to be a problem to park in spaces designed for cars of 20 years ago.

Talking of parking, the Passat’s on-board crash prevention devices conspired to give me a fright recently. Reversing into a space the car suddenly came to a halt with an accompanying graunching noise as the brakes applied themselves. My first thought was ‘I’ve hit that car’, but then the dashboard informed me I had activated one of the myriad driver assistance systems. While it was a tight space to reverse into, the car seemed somewhat over-cautious – or perhaps it doesn’t have much faith in my parking skills. Julian Kirk

our fleet Renault Kadjar Dynamique S Nav FOLLOWING the departure of our last long-termer, I’ve now been passed the keys to the Kadjar, which is already turning heads. It might be helped by the optional Flame Red paintwork on our model but the Kadjar has already received a few comments from friends and neighbours – someone from my son’s nursery even stopped me in the supermarket and said her husband had spotted it parked up outside our house and he wants one. Already I’ve been impressed by the fuel economy – on the return journey home from the office I was getting just a smidgen under 60mpg with no effort. I’m still getting used to the features on the R-Link 2 multimedia system – there’s quite a lot on offer here but getting between the functions can sometimes feel a bit convoluted. However, it’s certainly keeping the kids happy – changing the display colours and guessing the results on the pollution detector are fast becoming as much a part of long journey as playing ‘I spy’.

One feature that has been switched off though is the lane departure system, which seems to be set off quite easily, including when I get just slightly close to one side of a lane or over old road markings. Thanks to the aforementioned kids, the Kadjar’s practicality is also appreciated. It’s great for rear legroom, although rear sliding seats would be appreciated, and I’ve already put the abundant boot space – 472 litres with the seats up – to the test, though I’ve not made the most of the multi-position boot floor yet. With the school holidays fast approaching, I’m sure it’ll be put to the test soon. Natalie Middleton

Vauxhall Astra SRi Nav 1.0 Turbo 105PS IT’S funny how, with every new innovation in modern cars, we tend to take certain things for granted. And our long-term Astra’s Onstar is a case in point. In addition to the obvious fleet safety benefits of being able to press an ‘SOS’ button if you're in trouble and having someone on the end of the line if you need anything at all – location advice, the nearest refuelling stop etc – it also has built-in Wi-Fi, through a 4G-LTE connection. You might be thinking “why do my drivers need Wi-Fi when they're on the road?”, but with cars increasingly acting as connected mobile offices, it’s a real selling point for new Astra. It also means happily streaming all your favourite smartphone music through the excellent CarPlay system, so long journeys pass by far more enjoyably than they otherwise would. Unfortunately, those recent long trips have been conducted with half a nearside wing mirror thanks to a local oik

mindlessly ripping off the colour-coded cover... Some people! Nevertheless, new Astra continues to impress with its refinement, the general excellence of the 1.0-litre petrol turbo engine and the easy 50+mpg it offers. No wonder petrol is making a fight-back against derv driven rivals... Luke Wikner

Ford Transit Ford has replaced the 2.2-litre engine in Transit and Custom with a new 2.0-litre, says Dan Gilkes. SECTOR Mid-heavy van PRICE Custom £19,245-£28,095 Transit £22,245-£32,395 CO2 Custom 157–179g/km Transit 174–212g/km

ord has developed an all-new 2.0-litre diesel engine, called EcoBlue, designed and built in the UK. The engine will be used in front, rear and all-wheel drive large Transit models and in Transit Custom, which is front wheel drive only. EcoBlue engines will eventually cover power outputs from 100-240hp. For now though both vans will be offered with three ratings of 105hp, 130hp and 170hp. The 105hp engine produces 360Nm, figures that are 5hp and 50Nm up on the previous 100hp model. The 130hp engine delivers 385Nm, up 5hp and 35Nm, while the range-topping 170hp motor has 405Nm on tap, a rise of 15hp and 20Nm. Despite the increased power and torque, Ford is claiming an average 13% fuel saving across the range, with emissions levels from the Euro 6 engines starting at just 157g/km. Available with variable service intervals, the engines offer up to two years/37,000 miles between visits to the dealer, cutting operating costs for fleets. Both van models have a 21-litre AdBlue tank, which Ford claims should last for around 6,000 miles. To offset the additional weight of the AdBlue tanks and dosing system, Ford has increased gross weights on all models below 3.5-tonnes, to maintain payloads. However the system will have a slight impact on payloads for 3.5-tonne van users. All three engines drive through the existing six-speed manual gearbox. However Ford will finally offer a sixspeed automatic transmission later this year on all front wheel drive models, which should allow the company to make in-roads into the competitive supermarket delivery market.

F

72 / vanfleetworld.co.uk

Though outwardly similar to the previous models, Ford has boosted the technology in both Transit and Transit Custom, with the addition of Side Wind Stabilisation and Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian detection now available on both vans. Inside the cab Ford’s SYNC 2 voice-activated connectivity system is available on large Transit models, complete with a 6” touchscreen for navigation. Transit CustoM continues with the existing SYNC system and a smaller 4” screen. The new engines also contribute to a 1.2dB reduction in in-cab noise, reducing fatigue for the driver. Suspension technology has been improved on the vans, with new rear dampers contributing to improved roll control and vertical control. Ford will also offer rear air suspension as an option on people-carrying Transit Custom models such as Kombi. The vans’ hydraulic power steering system has been upgraded too, to deliver lower driver effort and improved control. Certainly on the road both Transit and Transit Custom models are incredibly refined. There is a bit of a rumble under acceleration but once up to speed the engine all but disappears, even at motorway speeds. The 105hp engine has more than enough power to pull a half-laden 350 model Transit with ease on hilly terrain and things get even easier as you move up the power ratings, with the 170hp engine delivering very accessible pulling power from surprisingly low rpm. In the UK Ford is expecting the mid-range 130hp engine to be the popular choice in both vans, with its combination of increased torque and improved economy providing the ideal mix for most operations.

FEATURE_Transit_VFW_June16 03/06/2016 19:07 Page 2

EcoBlue engine Designed in the UK and Germany and built in the Dagenham engine plant, Ford’s EcoBlue 2.0-litre diesel engine uses an offset crank design first seen in the company’s award-winning EcoBoost petrol engine. It incorporates four-valves per cylinder with what Ford is calling mirror-image inlet manifolds, that have anti-clockwise swirl in cylinders one and two, with clockwise swirl in cylinders three and four. A low-inertia variable nozzle turbocharger that spins to 240,000rpm, eight-hole Piezo fuel injectors and a ladder frame cast-iron block with modular aluminium head complete an engine design that delivers a claimed 13% fuel saving over the previous 2.2-litre TDCi Duratorq design. To meet Euro 6 emissions standards the EcoBlue engine has internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with a close-couple oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter. Selective catalytic reduction completes the emissions package, cutting NOx by 55% over the previous model. The 2.0-litre engine is said to be Ford’s first commercial vehicle powertrain to meet passenger car levels of noise, vibration and harshness, while service intervals have been stretched to two years/37,000 miles.

what we think...

FLEET FACT Ford expects the 130hp engine to account for the majority of sales in both Transit and Transit Custom.

Downsizing has become increasingly popular, as manufacturers look for reduced fuel consumption and improved emissions. With increased power and torque across the range, there are big benefits for drivers with the EcoBlue engine, while fleet managers should approve of the improvements on the balance sheet. vanfleetworld.co.uk / 73

ROAD_VFW_Caddy_June16_Layout 1 03/06/2016 19:22 Page 1

Volkswagen Caddy Is it time for mainstream vans to return to petrol power? Dan Gilkes tries VW’s Caddy TSI.

t’s been a long time since petrol engines were the norm in most vans, unless the intention was to convert them to LPG gas use. However a growing number of manufacturers, including Ford and Fiat Professional, are now offering petrol as a regular choice in smaller LCVs. Volkswagen has also opted to make petrol power a viable proposition in its latest Caddy van range, with no less than three petrol engines on offer. While the three Euro 6 diesel engines being offered in Caddy are all based on a single 2.0-litre motor, the petrols differ in capacity. They start with a 1.2-litre TSI that boasts 84hp, there’s a 102hp three-cylinder 1.0litre engine and finally this 1.4-litre TSI, that puts out a healthy 125hp. There is little doubt that VW’s emissions woes have pushed the installation of these Euro 6 petrol engines alongside new Euro 6 diesels. However they are also being launched in answer to growing customer demand. Concerns over diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration in an urban environment, where some van drivers find it hard to reach the necessary speeds and operating temperatures to burn off the particulate filter, are becoming increasingly common. Add in much improved fuel consumption and lower noise levels and it’s easy to see the attraction of petrol for city use. Talking of which, VW claims up to 47.9mpg should be possible in mixed use, resulting in a CO2 rating of 136g/km. Neither figure is a million miles away from the diesel models and with no requirement for AdBlue, running costs should be similar too. Both the petrol

and diesel Caddys are offered with variable service intervals depending on use. This compact petrol engine also boasts an impressive 220Nm of torque, across a relatively wide rpm plateau. While the two lower powered petrol motors come with five-speed manual gearboxes, the 1.4 gets six forward gears. This boosts acceleration and the van’s ability to cruise. Even the base Startline models gets electrically heated door mirrors, electric windows, height adjustable driver’s seat, a full bulkhead, DAB radio with Bluetooth and a side loading door. All Caddys also boast as standard a host of driver assistance systems, including ABS, EBD, Electronic Differential Lock, ESP, Auto Post-Collision Braking, Engine Drag Control and automatic hazard light activation under emergency braking. The vans also have BlueMotion Technology equipment, including Hill Hold Assist, low rolling resistance tyres, regenerative braking and Stop/Start. The Highline specification that we have here includes Climatic air conditioning, leather steering wheel and gearlever covers, auto lights and wipers plus an auto dimming rear view mirror, Thatcham Cat 1 immobiliser, front fogs, a heated windscreen and the 16-inch alloy wheels. With a base price before VAT, options and on the road costs of £16,790, the 1.4 TSI Caddy Highline is just £100 more than the Highline diesel model, equipped with a 102hp version of the 2.0-litre TDI engine. That diesel returns a claimed 61.4mpg against the petrol’s 47.9mpg, despite only being equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox.

ROAD_VFW_Berlingo_June16_Layout 1 03/06/2016 19:21 Page 1

Citroën Berlingo Euro 6 engines bring fuel and driving benefits to latest Berlingo, says Dan Gilkes.

ith Euro 6 engines set to take over in light commercial vehicles from 1 September this year, few fleet managers have been rushing to make the change before they have to. Manufacturers have offered a growing number of Euro 6 engines alongside existing Euro 5 powerplants, but with a substantial on-cost, the adoption in many cases of AdBlue and little to show for it in terms of fuel consumption improvements, take up has been predictably glacial. However, with more power and torque on offer, reduced fuel consumption and a much improved driving experience, the 100hp BlueHDi engine in this Berlingo could be enough to change a few minds. Power rises from 90hp to 100hp, but more importantly torque leaps from 215Nm to 254Nm in the Euro 6 van. Despite that, the fuel economy of this BlueHDi 100 S&S engine rises to 67.3mpg, against 56.5mpg for the same van with the Euro 5 HDi 90 engine. That results in a CO2 drop from 132g/km to just 111g/km. The BlueHDi engines use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with a 17-litre AdBlue tank mounted alongside the diesel filler. With a range of around 14,000 miles between refills, that means that drivers will have to top up themselves, rather than leave it to the service engineer, as regular maintenance intervals are set at 16,000 miles. Though still driving through a five-speed manual gearbox, the additional torque contributes to considerably quicker acceleration and much more relaxed cruising. It’s not just the performance that is noticeable

W

what we think Citroën’s BlueHDI engines show that Euro 6 emissions can lead to improved power and torque, plus quieter driving , which should prove popular with drivers.

specification MODEL

Citroën Berlingo BlueHDi 100 S&S L1 625LX BASIC PRICE £14,395 ENGINE 4-cyl/1,560 cc FUEL INJECTION common-rail POWER 100hp @ 3,750rpm TORQUE 254Nm @ 1,750rpm Weights (kg) GVW 1,970 KERB WEIGHT 1,317 PAYLOAD 653 MAX TRAILER WEIGHT 1,250 Dimensions (mm) LOAD SPACE LENGTH 1,800 LOAD SPACE WIDTH 1,620 LOAD SPACE HEIGHT 1,250 LOAD VOLUME 3.3 m3 Cost considerations COMBINED CO2/MPG 111g/km/67.3mpg OIL CHANGE 1 yr/16,000 miles WARRANTY 3 yr/100,000 miles

though, the Euro 6 engine is so much quieter and more refined. There is no longer a need to reach for the radio volume control as speeds rise, even with this van’s mesh bulkhead. The difference between the 625LX van with the Euro 5 90hp engine and this 100hp Euro 6 version is around £400, though the Euro 6 engine comes with Stop&Start as standard. If you are putting in the miles it could be money worth spending on fuel alone. Certainly drivers will thank you, as the Euro 6 van is far nicer to drive, despite minimal changes to the Berlingo cab. Citroën is offering to improve the interior specification of the cab for a reduced outlay however. While there are two dedicated Enterprise models on offer – a BlueHDi 75 L1 625 and a BlueHDi 100 S&S L1 850 – customers can now order an Enterprise Pack on any LX trim model. This includes air conditioning, a touchscreen audio pack, anti-theft alarm, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and USB connections, for an all-in price of £800 plus the VAT. That’s a saving of around £730 against ticking all of those option boxes separately and, while it can’t disguise the age of the Citroën’s interior, it does make things more comfortable for drivers. The 100hp engine also proves that Euro 6 need not be bad news for fleet managers, with the promise of improved fuel consumption going some way to offset the additional purchase cost though AdBlue costs should be added into the equation too.

FTA warns of rising costs for London vans

inshort

he Freight Transport Association (FTA) has reacted with caution to new London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s proposals on air quality within the capital. The Association has warned that the proposals will add substantial costs to companies operating within London and may even put some firms out of business. There are three areas of concern. Firstly the plans suggest an additional charge on the Congestion Charge, which would impact vans and trucks. Secondly the proposal calls for all vans and trucks to have Euro 6 engines when driving within inner-London, possibly as early as 2018. Thirdly, the FTA said that the proposal will require all trucks to be Euro 6 throughout Greater London by 2020. “Freight operators and service industries could find themselves being charged extra for their vehicles before they have had any reasonable chance to upgrade,” said Christopher Snelling, the FTA’s head of national and regional policy. “Many businesses could lose trade

first in central London, then the whole of inner London and for businesses based in the zones involved, the impacts will be even worse. “The tipping point where these regulations become less disruptive to business is around eight years after the Euro standard was introduced, when a third to half the fleet is compliant and the second-hand market is fully developed allowing all companies to upgrade if needed. “FTA is concerned that these new proposals could see lorries charged extra just three years after their Euro 6 standard came in, and vans just months after, as their Euro 6 standard does not start until this autumn.” Mr Snelling added: “These disruptive proposals will put businesses at risk and add massive costs to all, especially to those who need the services that vans provide.” FTA chief executive David Wells has written to the Mayor of London to request a meeting to discuss the impact of these plans on the freight sector.

V6 power boost for VW Amarok aving led the move to smaller engines in pick-ups with the 2.0-litre Amarok, Volkswagen is upgrading the trucks with the addition of no less than three V6 3.0-litre diesels. The Euro 6 V6 engines will be offered with 163hp, 204hp and 224hp, with the top engine boasting a massive 550Nm of torque, 130Nm above the previous highest powered Amarok. However, equipped with an eightspeed automatic transmission, VW claims up to 37mpg from the 225hp model, with emissions as low as 199g/km. Amarok will get a mildy tweaked exterior and a revised cab environment, with the option of ergoComfort electrically-adjustable seating for front seat occupants. complete a cab that is far more angular than the current model. There will be three driveline configurations, from rear wheel drive, through 4Motion with selectable four-wheel drive, to full time allwheel drive with a Torsen centre differential and the eight-speed auto box. All models will now come with Servotronic steering. Full pricing and specifications will be available closer to launch later this year.

Nissan offers a glimpse of new NV300 Nissan has almost revealed the look of its soon to launched NV300 midweight van. The rest of the vehicle will be familiar though, as it is based on Alliance partner Renault’s Trafic. That means that behind that distinctive V-motion grille, already seen on Navara and NV400, will beat the same line-up of single and twinturbo 1.6-litre engines. Nissan will aim to differentiate itself though, by offering the vans with the same five year/100,000 mile warranty that is now available across its LCV models. Full details and pricing will be available at the Hanover show in September, with vans arriving in dealers in the Autumn.

Six-speed auto for petrol Citans Mercedes-Benz is to introduce a sixspeed dual clutch transmission on petrol powered versions of the Citan van. Both van and Citan Tourer models with the 112 petrol engine can be ordered with the 6GDCT transmission, with prices starting at £15,820 for the 112 panel van long model.

Rigid trucks drive UK growth The UK truck market was up by 19.2% in the first quarter of 2016, with more than 10,000 vehicles above 6tonnes registered in the first three months. After a number of years of high tractor sales, the growth this year seems to have come in part from rigid trucks, with rigids over 16tonnes up by 48.1%.
