EDITOR Hammer to crack a nut? There’s no doubt we are at a tipping point for alternative-fuelled vehicles, but I’m wondering if the impetuous supply and UK charging structure can catch up in time.
With the extension till Halloween, the urge to leave the EU seems to have been put on the backburner for the time being. In its place, with recent London protests fresh in people’s minds, climate change is making headline news again. No, I’m not talking about Extinction Rebellion protesters gluing themselves to buildings and trains, but instead the call from the Committee for Climate Change (CCC) to bring the ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars and vans forward from 2040 to 2030. The report predicts that by 2030, electric vehicles will be more affordable and easier to run, all without subsidies or tax relief. However, for this to be feasible there will need to be at least 3,500 ultra-rapid chargers alongside motorways for long trips. Plus, a further 210,000 public chargers in towns and cities. With just 21,000 chargers of all types at the moment, and no sign of the network growing at pace any time soon, I wonder if this is feasible? The report also urges the implementation of Clean Air Zones to discourage the use of polluting vehicles. However, as we all know, this opens a whole can of worms over a national framework, which still remains unresolved and mounts extra pressure on fleets, with the likely variable costs incurred at each city for non-conforming vehicles. If all of this is a worry to you, and I believe it should be, I urge you to read our News Analysis on page 8, where Fleet World’s Business Editor, Natalie Middleton, approached environmental specialists such as ClientEarth, to ask how we should tackle the UK’s stubbornly high road transport emissions. In my opinion, the CCC’s plans are like using a hammer to crack a nut, as in the first instance, ClientEarth believes the Government should be encouraging retrofit and upgrade solutions, as an intermediate solution for drivers, rather than pushing people towards new vehicles, which are expensive and fast selling out due to battery shortages. There’s no doubt we are at a tipping point for alternative-fuelled vehicles, but I’m wondering if the impetuous supply and UK charging structure can catch up in time. As we slide quickly into summer, January seems a long time ago. Bill Plant switches to all-Volkswagen fleet Bill Plant Driving School has awarded a sole supply deal to Volkswagen, switching its fleet exclusively to T-Roc and Golf models. The deal comes some 18 months after the two firms partnered on the supply of Golfs to instructors, now expanded to cover the T-Roc too. Instructors can specify either the Golf Match model or the SE specification T-Roc.

Move petrol and diesel car ban to 2030, say Government’s official advisors The Government’s 2040 target of ending sales of new petrol and diesel cars/vans is too late to tackle climate change and should be moved to 2030, according to its official environmental advisors. The Committee on Climate Change’s newly published Net Zero report calls for a new UK emissions target of net-zero greenhouse gases by 2050 to replace the current target of an 80% reduction against 1990 levels; a move it says is “necessary, feasible and cost-effective”. But getting all cars and vans to be electric by 2050 will require all sales to be pure battery electric – not hybrids – by 2035 at the latest, and ideally by 2030; significantly upping the ante on the Government’s current 2040 ‘ambition’ on new cars and vans that does include hybrids. The report says that by 2030, electric cars will be both cheaper to purchase and run than conventional cars even without existing subsidies or advantageous tax treatment. But the switch will require 3,500 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers near motorways to enable long journeys and 210,000 public chargers in towns and cities. Today in total there are 21,000 public chargers of all speeds. Meanwhile smart charging solutions will be important in ensuring that electricity demand peaks are manageable. And the Net Zero report also calls on cities and local authorities to have input, saying they are well placed to understand the needs and opportunities in their local area and play important roles on transport planning, including providing high-quality infrastructure for walking and cycling and provision of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The report also urges the use of Clean Air Zones to discourage the use of polluting vehicles and other technologies.
SEAT optimises fleet aftersales service with wide-ranging perks SEAT has further enhanced its services for fleets and company car drivers with a new benefits package. Launched as part of the carmaker’s ongoing commitment to optimising its fleet programme – which saw it secure the coveted Fleet Manufacturer of the Year accolade in the 2019 Great British Fleet Awards – the new ‘Fleet Commitment’ initiative brings a wide range of services to boost the aftersales experience. This includes benefits ranging from cost-effective service regimes, breakdown assistance and free vehicle health checks to access to courtesy cars and free labour on jobs less than 12 minutes. The programme also covers a range of other areas to help drive
down the total cost of ownership (TCO) and improve customer satisfaction, including access to the SEAT customer care team, discounted parts, reduced labour rates and a promise to ensure lead times are no longer than three days. The commitment also includes fast booking via 1-Link, collection and delivery, as well as SEAT’s three-year, 60,000-mile warranty covering mechanical and electrical failures. The scheme is intended to boost convenience, reduce cost and deliver the highest levels of fleet aftersales service, and complements the brand’s other work, including the launch of its Easymove streamlined buying process and its four-day test drive scheme for business customers.

New Mercedes-Benz GLS aims to ruffle Range Rover feathers Introducing improved levels of luxury, the new GLS raises the bar to compete with Range Rover and the BMW X7, coming to Western Europe in the third quarter of 2019. Billed as the “S-Class of SUVs”, the third-generation GLS is the largest and most luxurious SUV the company offers. With a 60mm longer wheelbase and featuring a third row with fully electric adjustable seats, and the option of two individual seats in the second row, the new GLS is packed full of technology including rear seat entertainment, five-zone climate control and air suspension that can be lowered at the touch of a button. A choice of two straight-six diesel engines power the GLS, depending on the particular market launch: GLS 350 d 4MATIC with 286hp and GLS 400 d 4MATIC with 330hp, providing economy of 35.8-37.2mpg and between 208-201g/km CO2. Both engine versions comply with RDE2, which should mean the cars avoid the 4% BiK surcharge and first-year VED is lowered by one band. Even though the car does not feature a low-range transmission, its nine-speed automatic gearbox and 4MATIC all-wheel drive allows for a variable transfer of torque from 0-100% between the axles in order to aid off-road performance. Air-suspension is standard across the range, enabling variable ride height for either lower drag on motorways or a raised ride height for additional ground clearance when off tarmac. Driver aids include ‘Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC’ adaptive route-based speed and cruise control, and a new Active Stop-and-Go Assist that assists drivers while in a traffic queue and takes into account signposted speed limits. Equipment highlights bring an optional Android tablet in its own docking station stored in the rear armrest, massage functions and MBUX rear seat entertainment system.
RDE2-compliant Range Rover Evoque to escape 4% BiK surcharge The Range Rover Evoque has become the first luxury compact to meet RDE2 standards – ensuring that it avoids the 4% BiK surcharge. Mandatory for all new type approvals from January 2020 and all new car registrations a year later, the new emissions standard – which states that cars must emit 80mg/km or less of NOx – is already being met by the D150 manual front-wheel drive diesel in the new Range Rover Evoque, bringing a tax benefit for company car drivers. The early certification has been achieved by the use of advanced engine and exhaust technologies, including the use of AdBlue and efficient Diesel Particulate Filters, making the D150 manual FWD comparable in NOx emissions to a petrol engine, while offering the fuel consumption and CO2 benefits of a diesel vehicle, according to Jaguar Land Rover. Nick Rogers, executive director of product engineering, said: “Meeting the standards for this certification almost two years ahead of schedule is a real achievement and a result of collaboration within our engineering team to develop advanced engine and exhaust technologies.” The new Range Rover Evoque is available to order now, priced from £31,600 OTR.
APPOINTMENTS ARI UK’s Keith Allen to retire ARI has announced that Keith Allen will retire from his position as UK managing director at the end of 2019 – although he will continue in an advisory role until the end of 2021. Allen has been in the fleet and financial markets for more than 35 years including 13 years as managing director of ALD Automotive prior to his seven years as ARI UK managing director. ARI and Allen will work together to identify a successor for his role.
Volvo turns spotlight on large corporates Volvo has appointed a new business sales manager as it looks to create and rekindle opportunities with large corporates. Developed as part of an increased focus on fleet for the brand that has also seen it work to support SME customers, the newly created role has been filled by Carl Stanton, who will have a specific remit to seek new contract opportunities with businesses that may not have purchased Volvos for a number of years.
John Pryor to stand down from ACFO Fleet industry stalwart John Pryor is to resign from ACFO in June ahead of his retirement from his job as fleet and travel manager at Arcadia Group. Pryor said it was with “great sadness” that he was standing down from the board and chairmanship of ACFO. He will leave Arcadia in August and starts his retirement with a threemonth tour around the US with his wife Anne.

A STATE OF EMERGENCY Hard-hitting actions from eco environmental activists over the last month are ensuring progress is being made on upping the climate change ante. Natalie Middleton asks the environmental specialists how exactly we should tackle the UK’s stubbornly high road transport emissions.
I
t’s been some 30 years in the making but there’s finally been some headway made when it comes to recognition of the fact that unless we stop carbon emissions, we are threatening the survival of the next generation. The actions of Extinction Rebellion – described by one of the founders, Roger Hallam, to The Guardian as the “biggest organised civil disobedience campaign in British history” – and Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg have ensured that climate change is not only back on the front pages, it’s also on the political agenda, with the UK Parliament now having responded to calls and declared an ‘environment and climate emergency’. It’s pertinent timing; although the Climate Change Act commits the UK government by law to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% of 1990 levels by 2050, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has just published a report recommending the UK strengthens the cut to net zero emissions. But what can be done about transport which, according to the DfT’s Transport Statistics Great Britain 2018, is now the largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK after noticeable declines in emissions from the energy sector. In fact, emissions from transport have barely fallen since 1990. In the spirit of Extinction Rebellion’s three main demands on climate change to the UK government – and in recognition of Greta Thunberg’s strict no-fly policy and the growing wave of ‘flight shame’ in her home country – what three immediate actions should the Government take on transport emissions? The CCC has said in its Net Zero report that the current government target of ending the sale of new conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040 – reiterated in last year’s Road to Zero Strategy – is too late and current plans for delivering this are too vague; it’s calling instead for the timeline to be moved forwards to 2030, focused on pure electric cars and

backed up by developments in charging infrastructure. But the report from the Government’s climate change advisers also sets out three ways for individuals and households to take action on the way they travel; from a switch to walking/ cycling/public transport, to opting for an electric car and charging it smartly, and also – in line with ‘flight shame’ – to minimise flying, especially long-haul. ClientEarth, which has won three legal cases against the UK government over illegal levels of air pollution across the country – and provided support for the new CCC Net Zero

report, agrees that the goal of phasing out petrol and diesel cars and vans should be brought forward to 2030 but the firm’s Andrea Lee, campaigns and policy manager, clean air, also says there are three steps that should be taken today. First, the Government should introduce a national network of Clean Air Zones (CAZs) that can quickly remove the most polluting vehicles from the most polluted parts of our towns and cities. CAZs should be backed up with help and support for people and businesses, in particular people on low incomes and small businesses. Secondly, the UK Government should make cleaner vehicles more affordable and accessible now. Retrofit and
upgrade solutions could also be a useful intermediate step. It should make the motor industry contribute to this, given its role in “producing diesel cars that were not as clean on our roads as people were led to believe”. Targeted diesel scrappage schemes could help people and businesses use less polluting hybrid or electric vehicles, including e-bikes, free public transport season tickets or subsidised car club membership, for example. And thirdly, there should be investment in public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure. Meanwhile Greg Archer, UK director of lobby group Transport & Environment – which also provided support to the Net Zero report, agrees with the CCC recommendation on 2050 net zero emissions, but also says stronger policies will need to accompany the target in order to drive radical changes to our cars and how we use them. He outlines: “Firstly, the Treasury needs to continue to support the shift to zero-emissions vehicles. The last car with an engine needs to be sold in the early 2030s, but electric car grants are under threat just as new models are launched. Tax reform is essential including bringing forward the 2% BiK rate; and a rebate on ZEVs paid for by a registration tax on gas guzzlers. “Secondly, we need to encourage a shift away from car ownership in cities and encourage new mobility services by adapting Finland’s new digital transport services law. But alternatives to car use must also be made more attractive by investing in regional rail and dedicating road space for bus lanes and cycle paths. “Thirdly, road pricing needs to be put back on the agenda. The marginal costs of car use are far too low to encourage responsible car use. Charges could be adjusted by the levels of congestion, vehicle emissions and car occupancy, thus tackling both the environmental and congestion costs of transport. It will be essential once driverless electric cars are the norm.”

IN BRIEF 350kW-ready charging station opens The UK’s first ultra fast charging station has opened in Sunderland, bringing a charging capacity of up to 350kW. Developed by technology group ABB and managed by Dutch company Fastned, the charging station offers four 50kW fast chargers and two 175kW fast chargers that are already enabled for 350kW charging. This will help ready the network for the next generation of electric vehicles with high-capacity batteries.

UK fleets invited to sign up to vehicle-to-grid trials Fleets from across the UK are being invited to sign up to a new project that will test the viability of vehicle-to-grid technology as a means of powering electric vehicles in London. The e-flex project is being run by a consortium of partners led by global IT and networking specialist Cisco and including Transport for London, the Greater London Authority, Cenex, Nuvve, Imperial College London and E-Car Club, and will test V2G with 200 operational electric vehicles in real-world fleets to explore the potential economic benefits. Fleets taking part in the trial will have the opportunity to: • Test and improve EVs in a real-world environment, receiving a free 10kW bidirectional charger(s) and installation, with annual maintenance and 24/7 support included. • Lower costs of running a zero-emissions fleet through energy savings and unlock new services and opportunities for customers. • Become a greener brand and have a positive impact on the environment, monitoring savings through a fleet monitoring dashboard and application. The deadline for applications for the trial is 31 May 2019.
New Ford Kuga to include 29g/km plug-in hybrid Solar energy to power expanding EV fleet Brecon Beacons National Park Authority has reported significant energy savings from new solar panels deployed as part of its ambition to become energy positive. The new panels, which will play a key role in charging the Authority’s growing electric vehicle fleet, were installed at the end of January and have already captured enough power to drive the BMW i3 on its fleet a total of 7,600 miles.
Reservations open for Peugeot e-208 Fleets and drivers can now reserve the new Peugeot 208, including the fleetorientated electric e-208 model as well as petrol and diesel variants. Customers can reserve the e-208 or the GT Line PureTech 100 S&S eightspeed automatic (EAT8) or BlueHDi 100 six-speed manual for £500. Actual orders can be placed from late summer 2019, with the car going on UK sale in early 2020.

Ford’s all-new Kuga SUV will include three ‘electrified’ drivetrains, including a plug-in hybrid with CO2 emissions from 29g/km. Launching later this year, the third-generation Kuga is wider and longer than before, and based on the same lighter, stiffer platform as the latest Focus. There are two full hybrid models, both based on a 2.5-litre petrol engine. The plug-in hybrid will be available from launch, producing 225hp and featuring a 10.3kWh battery that charges in around four hours using the port on the wing. Its 55km electric range contributes to CO2 emissions expected to start from 29g/km (NEDC Correlated). A second hybrid version, with no plug-in range, will follow next year with CO2 emissions from 130g/km and either two or four-wheel drive. Ford is also equipping its 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine with a 48-volt ‘mild hybrid’ system while the Kuga will still be available with conventional petrol and diesel engines.

New event to spotlight CAV developments UK low-emission vehicle research and consultancy organisation Cenex is to launch a new standalone event focused on connected and autonomous vehicle developments. Cenex-Connected Automated Mobility will take place alongside the organisation’s long-standing LCV low-carbon vehicle event on 4-5 September 2019 at Millbrook Proving Ground and will have its own dedicated exhibition, a seminar hall and networking area to focus on connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) related issues. Issues under focus in the seminar programme include: • Mobility-as-a-Service • Enabling technology for CAM • Physical and digital infrastructure • Testing and validation • Policy and market development The launch of the event follows increasing interest in the CAV Showcase previously run by Cenex as part of its LCV event, and will see Cenex closely with the support of the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV), Innovate UK and the Department for International Trade to showcase latest UK connected and autonomous vehicle as well as international exhibitor activities. Registration for Cenex-Connected Automated Mobility is free of charge and now open.

£232m Drivy acquisition to create global car sharing leader US car sharing giant Getaround has acquired European car sharing platform Drivy for around £232m in a move said to create the world’s leading car sharing marketplace. Headquartered in Paris, Drivy has a community of two and a half million users across Europe and enables drivers and fleets to rent out idle vehicles in 170 cities. The acquisition by Getaround, which is headquartered in San Francisco and has thousands of cars available throughout 140 cities across the United States, will combine the strengths of both companies to form a leading
global transportation and mobility company spanning North America and Europe. Getaround founder and CEO Sam Zaid said the acquisition would enable it to move closer to its vision of connected and shared cars. He added: “As the leading European car sharing marketplace, Drivy has built a strong business with products, teams, and values that closely align with ours at Getaround, making for a natural integration for our employees and users. Consumers all over the world are embracing the ease, flexibility and freedom that connected car sharing offers.”
Mobilleo gains ride-hailing Mobility platform Mobilleo has been updated with new ride hailing capability, bringing access to taxi, car rental, transfer and chauffeur services across Europe via one app. The new capability means customers can access ride-hailing services in towns and cities, with an initial eight providers signed up to the service.

Demanding satisfaction A company car off the road for servicing or repair work remains a painful experience for drivers of certain brands. The latest JD Power study reveals the winners and sinners. et’s face it, servicing, repair or maintenance jobs can be a cause of irritation for company car drivers. They require arranging a convenient date, hoping for a suitable loan car – preferably one that isn’t a mobile billboard for the dealer’s latest offers – and then planning the day around being back in time for collection. Admittedly some dealers now offer to pick up a car from home or work and drop it off afterwards. This was once the preserve of the premium brands but is increasingly offered by the volume players and is certainly appreciated by drivers. For dealers these jobs are an important, but often overlooked, customer touchpoint. Over the course of a car’s life cycle there are few opportunities for dealers to engage with drivers and nurture brand loyalty. While it may seem obvious that good impressions can have lasting benefits, it’s often forgotten in the cut and thrust of turning cars around in busy workshops. That’s why we rely on surveys to find out exactly what drivers think of the servicing offered by their local franchised dealer. For the last five years, JD Power – the global consumer research giant – has focused its attention on this part of the car usership equation to reveal which car makers excel and which ones disappoint. With nowhere to hide, underperforming brands are held accountable and have 12 months to introduce processes to better serve customer needs. And they do. The JD Power UK Customer Service Index (CSI) Study is extensive. This year’s recently published results were

based on responses from 6,759 drivers running cars aged up to three years old. It measured customer satisfaction with their service experience at dealers across five measures: service quality, service initiation, service advisor, vehicle pick-up and service facility. This year the highest-ranked volume brand, based on a 1,000-point scale, was Suzuki (813), an impressive 22-point year-on-year improvement and further evidence of the brand punching above its weight. Japanese brands did particularly well this year with Toyota (800) rated second and Honda (798) third. Rounding off the top five performers were Hyundai (798) and Peugeot (791). Ford, the biggest fleet brand in the UK, achieved a commendable 790; with the average score across the volume brands being 786. Fleet brands languishing in the bottom half of the ratings included Nissan (784), Vauxhall (784) and Renault (781). There were some surprises. Volkswagen (778), which is riding high in new car sales, was rated the third worst brand, only slightly better than Kia (775). The worst performer though was Fiat, scoring just 759 points. What a difference a year makes. In 2018 Kia was the third highest, Vauxhall was sixth and Fiat was above average in seventh place. Notable year-on-year improvers include Ford, up from 15th place in 2018 to sixth for 2019, and Peugeot, up from 13th to fifth. Meanwhile Mini dropped from the top position in 2018 to this year’s 10th place. There were also mixed fortunes amongst the premium brands. Audi
emerged as a clear leader with an impressive score of 815, followed by Mercedes (802). With the average set at 800, the under-achievers were BMW (798) and Land Rover (793). The real surprise was the bottom placed Volvo (776); unfamiliar territory for a brand generally regarded as being in the ascendancy. Last year the rankings looked totally different with Land Rover at the top followed by Volvo, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar (excluded this year because its sample was too small) and BMW. Car brands and their dealers talk a lot about delivering the highest possible level of customer satisfaction and have sophisticated mechanisms in place to measure performance. However, what the JD Power research shows is a lack of consistency. “Top performers one year can end up below the industry average the next, so paying attention to the little things can make a huge difference in cultivating customer relationships,” says Josh Halliburton, vice president and head of European operations at JD Power. He has a point. One of the greatest frustrations of customers waiting for their car is not being told when it’s ready to be collected and being forced to make repeated phone calls; an inexcusable own goal in these days of instant communication. JD Power’s analysis shows that customer satisfaction improves by +39 points if they are contacted by the dealer as soon as a car is ready, yet this only happens 62% of the time. Fixing this is an easy win and a sure-fire way to make a company car driver think more positively about a brand when their car is due to be replaced.

Best known for windscreen repairs and replacements, Autoglass has launched its first-ever car care product. Called Rain Repel, it’s designed to help motorists prepare their windscreens for the driving rain and high winds. Rain Repel is basically a hydrophobic, or waterrepelling formula. Applied by a single-use applicator to the windscreen, it creates a chemical bond with the glass on application. The result is that when it rains, it will bead and run rapidly off the windscreen at motorway speeds. Easy to apply to the windscreen of my long-term Volvo, it works too, and even at lower

Things are about to change thanks to Avis’s latest app that allows users to take control of the hire car experience, select a car, upgrade and complete booking forms, as well as push notifications that update users on the exact location of their rental car. Members of the Avis Preferred loyalty programme benefit from enhanced features on the app too, including the ability to bypass the rental desk completely, with access to an instant view of the rental agreement and assistance on demand. Having already been rolled out in the US and Australia, Avis is bringing the app’s functions to Europe, starting with hire car desks at London Heathrow and Paris Orly airports, with plans to extend the service across the continent in the coming months. Ford has introduced new technology to combat the rise in ‘relay thefts’, which sees thieves use equipment to extend the signal range of a car key to unlock then steal a vehicle. Essentially, the issue is that keys remain in a state of readiness, waiting for the owner to approach the vehicle and operate seamlessly. Combating this, Ford has installed a motion sensor in the fob that if undisturbed for 40 seconds puts the key into a sleep mode that removes any chance of a signal being repeated and relayed by thieves. The technology has initially been introduced on current Fiesta and Focus models. New cars are already being shipped with the updated fobs at no extra cost, while owners of cars already delivered can buy them from the dealership at £65 for the Fiesta or £72 for the Focus, plus 0.9 hours labour to programme and test. TOP KAT Larger, sportier and with a plug-in hybrid version, the new Kuga feels well placed to continue Ford’s SUV momentum, explains Alex Grant.
BiG PlAns The outgoing Kuga was one of the largest cars in its class and, although the athletic silhouette and lighter platform hides it, its replacement is larger still. At 4.63 metres it’s now longer than a Discovery Sport, perhaps to make room in Ford’s line-up for the forthcoming Puma SUV – a Focussized newcomer positioned above the EcoSport. Ironically, that’s a gap the original Kuga used to fill. Predictably, it’s roomier inside as a result. Ford is claiming more passenger space in both rows, and class-leading legroom in the back – a tough task with a lower roofline and a hybrid battery to package under the second row. There are no plans for a seven-seater, despite the C-Max MPV being discontinued recently, but the rear bench now slides forward to extend the luggage capacity and the boot floor is reversible to avoid dirt and damage.

PlUGGinG in Ford has offered plug-in hybrids in North America since 2013, but the Kuga brings the technology to Europe. It uses two electrified motors to assist a 2.5-litre petrol engine, while the 10.3kWh lithium-ion battery rewards a four-hour mains charge with a 34-mile electric range and tax-efficient 29g/km CO2 emissions. A hybrid without the plug-in range, but with a two-wheel drive option, will follow later this year with CO2 from 130g/km. Around 70% of European Kuga customers opt for diesel engines, so the line-up is similar this time: 120hp 1.5-litre and 150hp or 191hp 2.0-litre ‘EcoBlue’ diesels with CO2 from 127g/km. All feature NOx-reducing AdBlue after-treatment but none are certified RDE2-compliant, which means they attract the 4%-point Benefit-in-Kind surcharge. Petrols comprise two turbocharged 1.5-litre units, with 120hp and 150hp, both capable of shutting off one of their three cylinders while not under load, to save fuel.

KeepinG it Simple Contrasting the broad engine line-up, the Kuga will only be offered in three trim levels. Ford is simplifying its entire model range by focusing on the most popular versions. The entry-level Zetec trim has been dropped and the range now starts at Titanium, with sporty ST-Line and luxurious Vignale models as alternatives. All include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay at no cost. The cabin layout is similar to the Fiesta and Focus, with a decluttered dashboard and a tablet-like 8.0-inch touchscreen perched on top, but it’s home to plenty of new technology. Ford is offering a fully digital instrument cluster, hands and feet-off automated parking and an on-board modem, enabling drivers to check vehicle status via a smartphone app. The 120hp and 191hp diesels can also be equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which adjusts to driving style, gradients and cornering angles.
in SUmmARY The Kuga has become an important part of the Ford line-up. At 40,000 UK sales it’s the company’s third best-seller, while 153,000 units sold across Europe during a record 2018 mean it outsold the Mondeo three to one. Certified RDE2compliance feels like a missed opportunity but, with a plug-in hybrid available and the Puma soon to offer a high-spec downsized alternative, Ford’s mid-sized SUVs are looking very strong. Audi e-tron Martyn Collins reckons the e-tron makes the transition to electric motoring painless – but at a price. Isn’t it great when something works so well you don’t even question it! Well, that’s what I thought after driving Audi’s first all-electric model, the e-tron, on UK roads. Why? Well, apart from the electric power, the e-tron feels every bit the proper ‘Audi’ model from the driver’s seat. So think quality, mixed with stateof-the-art technology, and you won’t go far wrong. It seems like a good time to launch a halo EV model too, with double-tonne range seeming to be the tipping point for acceptance, plus the success of rival models, such as the 2019 Car Of The Year, the Jaguar I-Pace. Personally, I think the biggest disappointment of this car is the way it looks. Considering the forward-looking technology, apart from the unique front grille, headlights with their distinctive light signature and aerostyle alloy wheel designs, this could be any other Audi SUV. The only futuristic highlight on the outside of the e-tron, are the optional £1,250 Virtual Door Mirrors. These basically replace the standard door mirrors, with a pair of rear-facing cameras. The feed from the cameras
is then sent to two small screens, at the corners of either end of the dashboard. Having tried them, despite making the car more slippery, which equals more range, I’m not convinced sadly. Why? Well, the screens are mounted lower than you’d expect, the adjustment is a bit fiddly and then there’s the price, as you need to order them with Audi Side Assist, and that’s priced at an extra £625! Inside, the e-tron feels spacious and well-equipped, as you’d expect for a car with a basic list price of £71,520. The three screens in the dashboard (one for the Audi Virtual Cockpit’s instruments, the other two for the infotainment system and MMI Navigation Plus system) add to the futuristic feel of this car. Plus, the 600-litre boot, which can be extended to a massive 1,725 litres. A 95kWh battery mounted beneath the e-tron’s seats powers the two electric motors, equalling 402hp with power boost. Power boost enables the driver to enjoy the full power for short bursts, of up to eight seconds. Having tried it, I can believe the 5.7 second 0-62mph acceleration – the way this two-tonne SUV eats tarmac is jaw dropping. Despite this performance, having driven a mixed 120 mile launch route, I think the 241 mile combined WLTP range is entirely achievable. Expect 80% charge from a 50kW CCS DC

charge unit, in 90-120 minutes, but the e-tron can also use next-generation 150kW chargers that are due next year, equalling 80% charge in just 30 minutes. The power flaps for the two charging sockets, located ahead of the front doors, are neat too. Standard 20-inch alloy wheels, air suspension and no engine noise equal a comfy and refined ride, which firms up nicely in Dynamic mode – although it’s not really sporty, in spite of the performance. The steering is reasonably precise and considering its SUV height, the low centre of gravity means body roll is kept well under control.

Jaguar XE Jonathan Musk drives the refreshed XE – can it still cut it in the cut-throat compact executive market? Jaguar’s XE has been underrated for years. Sitting in the strongly fought compact executive sector, it was always going to have a tough time. That may be about to change, however, with the model’s refresh that brings a premium interior, restyled exterior and refined RDE2-compliant engine options. Fleets are expected to make up 33% of sales, although actual numbers aren’t anticipated to be enormous, based on the previous car’s success rate. However, waving an attention-grabbing hand in the air is the important business ingredient of the RWD D180 diesel that’s been RDE2-tested. This means it avoids the 4% BiK surcharge and bene-

fits from one band lower first-year VED – something none of the XE’s competitors can currently claim. This powertrain is consequently the expected best-seller, in either S or RDynamic S trim, despite the D180 commanding a small premium over the cheapest P250 petrol model of around £500. 2.0-litre petrol engines include the entry-model P250 or range-topping P300 variants, with RWD and AWD respectively. All the engines, whether petrol or diesel, come with an eightspeed automatic transmission. Trim-wise, there’s plenty of appeal compared to the outgoing model. Lots of I-Pace originating elements add a touch of much-needed class including metal-tipped wiper and indicator stalks, optional Touch Pro Duo infotainment and climate control system. Soft
touch materials have been used throughout, and a lot of effort has gone into the acoustics to isolate the cabin from the world beyond. New to the car is a segment first, ‘Clear Sight’, which introduces a digital display onto the rear-view mirror that shows an unobstructed view behind the car thanks to a roof-mounted camera – particularly useful if you’ve a passenger in the middle rear seat. It’s tech that’s steadily making its way onto options lists and helps reduce blind spots and therefore increases safety. And yes, you can turn it off. 18-inch wheels, electric seats, LED lights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all bundled in as standard – well worth noting that the latter two popular options are not included as standard and are expensive extras on BMW and Mercedes-Benz models.

Externally, the XE retains its sleek demeanour, which has been enhanced by slimmer front and rear LED lights, as well as revised bumpers and alloy wheel designs. It’s certainly handsome, but as ever beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, those sleek lines come at a price and if you find yourself regularly carting about giants and/or fridges, look elsewhere, as the XE’s low rear headroom and boot aperture are restrictive. Handling dynamics are where the XE shines. The chassis is playfully nimble and matched with the 180hp diesel unit offers a satisfying drive with plenty of poke. It’s refined and quiet once warmed up too (and more so than the same engine in other JLR products), with the signature diesel rattle only
noticeable in first gear or from cold. The eight-speed auto-box is perfectly matched too, though occasionally a little dim-witted at junctions, for example, when it’s left deciding upon a gear. Jaguar has always liked to play at the big boy’s table and so it should with a fine car such as the XE. However, if that’s the game it wishes to play, then inevitable comparisons with the competition ensue. Is the new XE ‘better’ than the new 3 Series or C-Class? Arguably, it’s a match for the 3 Series dynamically, yet it lacks the tech-appeal of each of the German offerings. Jaguar is in a slight predicament here, as the competition is fierce and capable in this segment, but that doesn’t mean the XE should be overlooked.

Toyota Camry Reintroduced after a 15-year absence, the Camry takes over where the Avensis left off, finds Jonathan Musk. Originally launched in 1982, the Camry has become hugely important for Toyota globally, selling 19 million units since its inception. Its departure from Western Europe in 2004 might have led you to believe the model was gone forever, but it’s been reintroduced to take up the mantle from the Avensis and with a hybrid-only line-up. Considering the model’s success in other markets – in 2017 it was the world’s 10th best-selling car – Toyota only expects to shift 500 units in the UK this year, with 80% destined for fleets. Forget how it drives or what it looks like, or the specification for a moment – first and foremost, the Camry offers no-nonsense business savings. First up, there’s low 23% BiK, which compares to around 30% for a diesel competitor, such as a Volkswagen Passat or Vauxhall Insignia. Then there’s its sub-100g/km CO2 (in Design trim on 17-inch alloys) and consequently lower VED. Though predicted RVs should always be taken with a pinch of salt, those of the hybrid Camry are good at 53% versus 39% for its diesel-
powered rivals. Total cost of ownership is also predictably positive, thanks to the brand’s proven reliability promise and low running costs that Toyota says make for a saving of around £55/month. Choosing the Camry might be a case of mind over heart, then. The UK will get just two trim levels – Design and Excel – with the former expected to take around 76% of orders. Styling is handsome enough, though perhaps a touch forgettable, but inside there’s more to make a noise about. Materials are premium with a good mix of top-drawer plastics and cow skin on show, as well as a swooping yet practical dashboard design. Controls fall easily to hand and there’s plenty of standard equipment to keep idle digits entertained including Toyota Safety Sense. However, the usual foibles are present; the sat nav is still difficult to comprehend yet there’s no option for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Oddly Tardis-like, there’s plenty of space in the cabin and boot too, thanks to the batteries being placed under the rear seats rather than under the boot floor. Out on the road, the first thing that strikes you is just how quiet the Camry is – and not only thanks to the electric motor but also plenty of acoustic insulation. The car is powered by the same

2.5-litre petrol engine that can also be found in the RAV4 and Lexus ES – with which the Camry shares many components as it’s based on the same GA-K platform. It’s potent enough, with a combined 218hp total system output, but Toyota’s quest to make the car more engaging to drive hasn’t been quite so successful. It’s on the good side of dull, but despite Sport mode’s best attempts to mimic engine braking, it’s best left in Eco or Comfort modes. Worthy of note, fuel economy worked out at around 60mpg during our time with the car – far above the official WLTP figures indicate.

Yes, there’s a new player in the popular Csector – Škoda. In fact, this isn’t the first time Škoda has played in this sector; it previously had the dated and forgettable Fabiabased Rapid, the model the Scala replaces. Although this was a bestseller in Europe, this wasn't the case in the UK! Instead, this time round, Scala is underpinned by the scalable MQB AO platform, which debuted on the latest SEAT Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo. But at 4.36m in length, the Scala is no supermini – in fact, it’s 10cm longer than the current Golf! This extra length means the Scala

feels exceptionally spacious – whether you’re in the front or back. Even the tallest passengers will have plenty of knee room in the rear and, more surprisingly, enough room for their heads not to be brushing the roof lining. Elsewhere, in the front of the Scala, all the switchgear is logically placed, the driving position is comfortable and the dashboard stylish. Look closer and all the switches are obviously borrowed from the Volkswagen Group parts bin. Plus, despite a general move to electric handbrakes, the Scala has a good old ratchet one. Sadly, the trim quality won’t worry a Volkswagen Golf, but is a match for our favourite, the Ford Focus. The boot is also a good size at 467 litres – even with the seats up.
Outside, the Scala shows Škoda’s next-level family look. At the front, the grille gets a more hexagonal look, blending in with the angular LED headlights and front air dam, plus power domed bonnet. At the side, there’s a sharp and distinctive beltline that arcs upwards. The most distinctive part of the rear design has to be the curvy, mostly glass tailgate, which, Focus-style, now has the Škoda name spread across the middle. The high-set rear lights are also LED-lit, and if you go for the range-topping SE L trim, it gets Audistyle scrolling indicators. The Scala’s engine line comprises one 115hp, 1.6-litre TDI diesel, and three petrol engines, made up of two 1.0-litre TSIs with 95 and 115hp and the 150hp 1.5 TSI. All of these engines are fitted with five and six-speed

manuals, plus seven-speed DSG auto. The 1.0-litre TSI in 115hp flavour with manual transmission is expected to be the top-seller for fleet with 56.5mpg fuel consumption (WLTP) and CO2 emissions of 113g/km (NEDC Correlated). All Scalas are well-equipped, but SE is expected to be the key fleet spec, with 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, manual air-conditioning, rear parking sensors, and eightinch touchscreen, Bluetooth and SmartLink+. Another attraction of the Scala being built on the MQB AO platform is the fact it’s fitted with the full suite of safety kit, including side and blind spot assist, rear traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and Park
Assist. ‘Simply Clever’ features such as the parking ticket holder on the A-pillar, the screen washer cap that changes into a funnel and the fuel cap-located ice scraper, which also doubles up as a tyre tread depth gauge, are nice touches too. On the road, the 115hp 1.0-litre TSI petrol feels willing and revvy and helps give a pleasingly light feel to this car. The engine is well-matched to the slick, six-speed manual gearbox too. Dynamically, the Focus is more polished and fun, but the Scala still drives well. The steering is reasonably precise, and this Škoda is a tidy handler, with body roll well controlled – the ride on the 16-inch wheels being refined and comfortable.

Honda CR-V Honda's fifth-gen CR-V has ditched diesel and turned to hybrid power. Martyn Collins puts it to the test. One of the original models to start the compact SUV revolution, the CR-V is now in fifth-generation guise. Alongside the 1.5 i-VTEC petrol engine that arrived last year, it's now offered in a new fuel-saving hybrid version with two- or four-wheel drive, bringing similar CO2 emissions to the 1.6-litre diesel it replaces, despite the move to WLTP-derived fuel economy figures. Over the first few miles the CR-V feels more like an EV, than a hybrid. It is eerily quiet in EV mode with the only intrusion from the 2.0-litre petrol engine being under hard acceleration. This is because the 2.0-litre petrol engine works as a generator, which in turn charges the battery to power a second
motor that’s connected to the wheels. In fact, the only time the engine drives the wheels is under hard acceleration, and there is a direct connection via a fixedgear transmission. That the CR-V is impressively refined makes it all the more obvious when the engine does help acceleration, sounding noisy and strained. This is disappointing, as apart from this the CR-V Hybrid is a relaxing drive. The general feeling of smoothness carries on with the CR-V Hybrid’s ride – which is generally composed and comfortable. However, on the flip side, the soft suspension doesn’t make the CR-V feel particularly dynamic to drive. However, having tried the 1.5-litre i-VTEC

petrol CR-V, I found the Hybrid to have better steering feel, which gave more confidence on twisty B-roads. Elsewhere, the CR-V’s interior is spacious, although the hybrid kit has an effect on boot space, which is reduced to 497 litres compared to the standard car’s 561 litres. The SR trim has all the kit you need; LED headlights, lane keep assist, a seven-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and a reversing camera are all included.

Ford Focus Active A little extra height turns Ford’s popular hatch and estate into a softroading crossover, finds Craig Thomas Ford has joined the crossover fray, adding Active variants (in both hatch and estate guises) to the Focus lineup. With a 30mm increase in the ride height, plus some exterior styling features to make it look more rugged, the Focus Active looks every inch like a soft roader. The extra height doesn’t offer the same kind of command driving position of an SUV, so there’s no significant extra down-the-road visibility benefit. Neither is there any change to the cabin and boot capacities, both of which are identical to the regular Focus – which means that there’s enough room up front for driver and passenger, and in the rear for a couple of adults (three’s a squeeze), plus between 341
and 1,320 litres (5751,620 litres in the estate) of bootspace. The cabin fit and finish are the premiumaspirant levels that we’ve come to expect from Ford, while the infotainment comes from the company's Sync system, which works well enough (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are included). There are switchable driving modes to change the on-road characteristics of the car, but with the addition of Slippery and Trail modes for some mild greenlaning or when away from the tarmac. The increase in the car’s ground clearance has little effect on the ride and handling of the Focus Active, though, so it still feels settled and agile. The engine line-up is straightforward,

SEAT Tarraco 2.0 TDI 190 Excellence Tarraco follows a common path, but Martyn Collins reckons this SEAT has plenty to offer fleet buyers. It might not look it, but the new Tarraco is a pivotal car for SEAT in the UK. Not only does it complete the brand’s SUV line-up, started by the Ateca three years ago, but it also previews the Spanish brand’s family look for its nextgeneration of cars. It’s best described as handsome, though if you think the Tarraco looks familiar you’d be right, as it is based on the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. As such, this SEAT looks more Wolfsburg than Martorell – right down to the Volkswagen logos on its windows! No surprise then that it’s assembled alongside its sister SUV in the German factory. That Volkswagen feeling carries on to the interior of the biggest SEAT
SUV; think soft-touch plastics, quality trim and switchgear, plus high-tech features such as the easyto-read LCD instruments. Look closer however and savings have perhaps been made at foot level, with shinier, harder plastics. On top of the quality, practicality is another Tarraco selling point, with seven seats fitted as standard. Plus, the tall driving position is comfortable, the seats supportive and it feels spacious in the front and rear. There’s still 230 litres of bootspace – even with the third row of seats in place. Our 2.0 TDi 190 Excellence test car was well equipped with metallic paint, 19-inch alloy wheels, sat-nav and adaptive cruise control as standard. However, the navigation system on

our car was slow to boot up, and felt glitchy when trying to plan routes. It’s powered by the 191hp version of the 2.0-litre TDi diesel engine, yet despite all this muscle, I found it very slow off the mark and not particularly smooth – although it was refined and torquey on the move. On the road, the steering is reasonably precise, body control is also good for such a big, tall SUV.

BMW X7 xDrive30d M Sport The X7 successfully enters BMW into the high-end luxury SUV market for the first time. Jonathan Musk reports. Let’s face it; who drives an SUV off road anyway? The new X7 isn’t a true offroader, then, but if specced with the optional mud-plugging modes and hill descent, it makes for a surprisingly adept mobile apartment on the rough stuff, with on-looking (and disbelieving) sheep eyeballing you through the windows as you pass. You’ll wince, however,
each time the alloys glance past a rock. So this car can do all of that dirty business, but it’s best to think of it as a more fashionable 7 Series – taking full advantage of current luxury and SUV trends, as well as bringing to the table credible competition to the Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Considering BMW’s established ‘X-rated’ SUV range and its prestige 7 Series, it’s a little surprising that the X7 didn’t come sooner. Is it just a raised 7 Series then? Yes and no – many of the saloon car’s options have made it across including laser light options and acoustic windscreen, and of course at more than £70k there’s a bible’s worth of safety and tech acronyms to discover.

More importantly, all X7s come with seven full-size seats. It’s no surprise then that this is lorry-large on the road. At over 5 metres long, 2 metres wide and 1.8 metres tall, its proportions dwarf most cars and indeed SUVs too. Fortunately, it’s packed full of cameras and sensors to assist manoeuvring, as well as BMW’s useful ‘Reverse Assist’ that can retrace the last 50 yards driven. Engine options include two impressive 3.0-litre diesels (30d and M50d), as well as an inline-six 3.0-litre petrol. Each provides enough power to move the moon, enabling the X7 with impressive performance, yet our xDrive30d M Sport returned 36.8mpg average and emitted 171g/km CO2. As a grandiose statement, it’s difficult not to like the X7. It’s a fantastic first foray into the luxury SUV segment by BMW and will deservedly win favour amongst the elite.

AC The new Focus is a very good car to drive, with an agile chassis, that gives confidence when pushing on a little – yet delivers a smooth and comfortable ride when cruising. The Zetec is also well-equipped with auto lights, air-conditioning, remote central locking, LED daytime running lights, and a DAB radio.
AC Fun to drive and frugal the Focus may be, but the 1.5-litre, 120hp EcoBlue diesel feels like it could do with more torque at times – especially at lower revs. The result is that it can feel a little breathless and slow off the mark, especially when pulling away quickly.
AC The Focus has been known as a driver’s car since launch, and the new car carries on the same tradition. However, it is now more practical than ever, because it feels much more like a spacious family sized hatchback.
AC There are many threats to the Focus in the C-segment, with plenty of impressive rivals, plus new models coming soon from Citroën, Peugeot and Škoda – which should also prove popular with buyers.
MJ Although the Focus generally has quite aggressive good looks, the car can seem a touch plain in Zetec trim compared with the ST Line. It’s missing the sporty body kit, plus the standard 16-inch alloy wheels look a bit lost underneath the arches.
MJ Don't underestimate the importance of this sector. Although under perpetual threat from compact SUVs, lower medium sector hatchbacks represent huge volume and this car has the potential to regain Ford's share of this.
MW The blue oval badge still has a stigma attached, it is still regarded by many as a ‘rep’ car, and there’s no doubt other brands have a much better image. As such, this Focus could be tarnished by the fact it’s a Focus.
MW The Focus 1.5 EcoBlue 120hp has a quiet and refined engine. If Ford and its dealers can get potential customers in this car, then the opportunities are endless. Couple this with its handsome looks, and I reckon it’s a winner.
MJ You will know this is a new Focus from its looks, but the overall scale of change is huge. Of significance is that the car handles and rides really well, and the new EcoBlue 120hp is very responsive – with good economy too. Specification and interior kit are competitive. MW With previous Focus generations, especially in fleet, it was a case of you had one because you had to have one. With the new one, it will be more the case that you actually want one.

MJ Premium badge products, such as the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes AClass, have been taking volume in this sector and Golf was ahead of Focus last year, so this car needs to regain its sector leader status. MW As with any model, in any sector, regardless of size or price, the Focus will suffer due to the increasing demand, and popularity of the SUV. In fact, every one of these cars in this group has a strong rival, in this more practical and flexible sector. So, the threat will come from within.

n a climate where Brexit, WLTP, RDE2 and falling diesel sales are each taking their toll, Rob East lays out BMWs future fleet plans for the difficult years ahead. Business and uncertainty are not typically a match made in heaven and with the announcement of a Brexit extension until 31 October 2019, things aren’t about to get any simpler. In response, a new strategy to maximise growth is needed, he comments: “We have very strong channel performance in fleet, across the various different subsets but there’s more that we can do.” The influx of new emissions regulations has cost the company money, undoubtedly, as fleets have been unsure which cars to choose. BMW and Mini were both quick to ensure all models were WLTP tested and BMW has been an early player in the electrified scene that has become an important part of the business – the 330e plug-in hybrid is the second best-selling model in the 3 Series line-up, after the diesel and that success is expected to continue. “Of course, with a global changing structure, it’s about changing our EV footprint and again we’ve got great products having entered into the market early with the i3.” The perfect storm of industry changes will be topped off with RDE2 legislation. East adds: “Again we will make sure where we can that we will be ahead of the curve and can give customers as much clarity as possible [sic].” So what are the plans for the future of BMW fleet sales and how does it intend to up the ante? The answer is channel management, which is seen as key in the company’s 2019 plans and beyond, comments East: “For us, it’s about sustainable channel management. If you look at February year-to-date [sales], we grew in first price level customer channels, while we decreased our second price noncustomer channels (dealers, internal fleet). It’s a slightly different story for our competitors. We take [channel management] very seriously, but it’s about profitable growth for our retailers and the longer term effect of RV management. And this is a clear objective for us moving forward into 2019 and beyond.” Further corporate alignment has taken
place in the form of bringing together the corporate teams from BMW and Mini in the UK to align and complement rather than compete with each other. BMW plans to focus on five key pillars this year. “The first is ‘People’: making sure we have the right [team] structure to engage with an ever changing corporate market. That’s very much from an OEM and NSC (National Sales Company) perspective. But it’s also making sure we have the right infrastructure with our retail partners,” East comments. And leaning on BMW’s populist nature, brand loyalty hasn’t gone unnoticed and is just as relevant for fleets, “One thing I’ve been impressed by is not just the depth of the customer relationships we have but also the level of passion there is,” says East proudly. The next stage is recognising the company’s considerable and growing technological developments. This has led to a technological leadership, believes East, but using it to differentiate the brand in the market is no simple task. Of course, electrification has helped enormously with this image and the support the company has given to the likes of Formula E has allowed it to nurture this stance on a global scale. Finally, making it simpler to buy a BMW is key to recognising end-users and maintaining brand relationships. East’s focus here is simple: “Sometimes we have an arm’s length relationship with an end-user, but those endusers are the same as a retail customer and they expect the same. How do we make it really simple to buy from us, but more importantly to stay with us.”
New models 2019 is particularly active for BMW, with 18 model launches of which 9 are incremental and 8 are luxury models. Importantly, by the end of the year, the BMW range will be the youngest across the segment. Following the fun new Z4 and businessfocused 3 Series launches, the 8 Series convertible, new X7 (taking the fight to Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover’s flagships), will be joined by the 7 Series LCI (BMW speak

for facelift) and a new 1 Series. East believes most BMW models have a place in fleet, even at the higher end and sports cars, though he alludes to a new focus on the 7 Series for corporate buyers, likely based on his experience at Mercedes-Benz and its success with the rival S-Class.
An electric future As for BMW’s electrification plans, midway through the year will see the launch of an updated BMW i3 featuring a new 120Ah/42.2kWh battery that should offer a true range of 160 miles per charge. This will be followed by the new generation 330e that provides up to 37 electric miles and less than 40g/km CO2. The updated X5 xDrive45e and then the 7 Series plug-in hybrid will further expand the range. Next up, BMW will begin building the iX3 towards the end of next year, for intended sale in 2021. Designed from the ground up as an electric car, the i4 is also due in 2021, (likely arriving in the UK in 2022). However, Fleet World can reveal that the car will be offered with combustion engines as well. Powered electrically though, BMW has stated the car should be good for 372-miles per charge. “Our expectation is that there will be a significant market for these cars in 2021,” East adds. Looking slightly further into the future, Fleet World can also reveal the iNext (concept codename), that is largely based on an X5, won’t be called the iX5. This car is destined to introduce the next stage of the company’s autonomous driving technology, likely Level 3 – which should allow for full autonomous driving along certain road types, e.g. a
motorway, though legislation, not technology, is the restricting factor. In addition, at the start of 2020, and a full decade after the original Mini E, the new Mini three-door hatch will be released as a full electric version for the first time. “With 25 electrified models by 2025, the breadth and speed of change shows no signs of slowing down,” East concludes.
Mobility The industry buzzword of the moment, ‘mobility’ is one of those terms banded about that always seems to be placed at some indeterminable time in the future, and never ‘now’. However, with brands like DriveNow taking off and, with the general global shift to urbanisation and particularly the growth of countries including China, combined with the complexity in the automotive market with factors such as Low Emission Zones, BMW has a firm eye on a ‘mobile and shared automotive future’. East adds: “I think it’s very much about looking at shared mobility. There has recently been the joint venture formed with Daimler, which ten years ago would have been unheard of. Particularly around the DriveNow and Car2Go brands, it makes sense to combine those two and leverage the scale of them. But it’s also about the next stage of things and the innovations will continue. I think there’s now a real focus between two strong automotive brands.” And, while shared vehicle models are still in their infancy, at BMW the subject isn’t. “We describe this as ACES – Autonomous, Connected, Electrified and Shared. I think they are the four pillars of what will be our future mobility strategy.”

JAGUAR XF R-SPORT D180 AWD

JAGUAR’S XF replaced the S-Type back in 2007 and has accrued an envious selection of awards from various publications. Having added the custard to a slice of German apple pie, the XF managed to steal many company car drivers away from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi’s finest midsize executive saloons. However, in a difficult time for the industry, it’s anyone’s guess whether saloons will stand up to scrutiny in an SUVobsessed world, not to mention antidiesel sentiments aplenty. Business customers should take note that had our car been rear-wheel drive, it would have benefited from Jaguar’s recent spate of RDE2 testing and therefore in 180hp diesel guise would have avoided the extra 4% BiK, as well as increased VED first-year charges. The updated engines along with new lowrolling resistance tyres have also seen CO2 drop considerably, for example an XF Saloon 180hp RWD Manual Portfolio, falls from 134g/km to 126g/km CO2. Nonetheless, our all-wheel drive variant is the right choice for those travelling regularly on loose surfaces or needing to lug a trailer behind.
FINAL REPORT
Spec-wise, our car has been kitted out in R-Sport trim, which is the bestselling (and best-looking), and comes with a few optional goodies thrown in over the standard equipment list. Other than a variety of styling upgrades, this includes a multi-function steering wheel, ever-useful front parking aid and an auto-dimming rear view mirror. In addition, we’ve opted for a variety of winter-friendly options including auto-dimming plus heated side mirrors
(£370), heated/cooled front seats (£540), heated steering wheel (£195) and a heated front windscreen with heated washer jets (£265). There are more options which I’ll mention in my next report, but primary amongst them is the electric deployable tow bar (£990). Our XF looks the business, sporting its Italian-inspired Firenze Red (£705) with Ebony/Pimento Red (no cost option) interior too. Jonathan Musk
VAUXHALL GRANDLAND X Tech Line Nav Turbo D 130

I’VE been running the Grandland X for the last month and final 1,000 miles of its tenure with Fleet World and been impressed by its comfort, practicality and economy. The 1.5-litre turbo diesel has delivered a steady 48.6mpg, getting close to its WLTP combined rating of 51.4mpg; although it’s worth remembering this car achieved a super frugal 63.6mpg when taking part in last year’s MPG Marathon! Its final stint as a long-term test car saw it put through its paces. The car served as a motorway cruiser, where its punchy 130hp output was appreciated; a family run-around, with more than enough space to comfortably accommodate five adults; and a junk mover,
making trips to the local recycling centre, with the seats dropped to create a long, wide and flat load bay. In other words, the real-world demands typically placed on SUVs run as company cars. But that’s only half the story. In Tech Line Nav trim this Grandland X is also a well-specified car with no shortage of standard creature comforts and safety features, including blind spot alert and lane assist. Ultimately, the Grandland X takes full advantage of the flexible PSA platform it shares with the Peugeot 3008 to deliver a truly competent alternative to the likes of the Nissan Qashqai. MAZDA CX-3 Sport Black+ 2.0 2WD

OUR CX-3 has gone back to the good people at Mazda, to be replaced by its larger stablemate, the recently updated CX-5. As well as taking up a little more drive space, the CX-5 instantly points out some of the smaller model’s shortcomings, along with a few benefits. The larger Mazda is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel, which while only boasting 29bhp more than the 2.0-litre petrol engine in the CX-3, delivers a hefty 174Nm torque boost over its naturally aspirated cousin. Of course, the CX-3 is a lighter car and the petrol engine pushes it along quite happily. But on a run, the additional torque of the bigger car is very welcome, as are the lower noise levels. That said, a nine-hour round trip from Suffolk to Somerset in the CX-3 was easily accomplished and I walked away ache-free at the end of a long day at the wheel. The CX-3 competes in one of the toughest sectors of the market, with a new compact SUV seemingly arriving every week. The good news for Mazda is that the car can more than hold its own against the competition. If that’s the sector you are looking at, the CX-3 should be on your shopping list. Dan Gilkes

THE latest addition to the Fleet World long-term fleet comes from Škoda, a company that continues to re-invent itself within the Volkswagen Group family. Compact SUV, small crossover, ‘Best Family Car 2019’ (according to the UK Car of the Year Awards jury) – call it what you like, the Karoq ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people. One look inside and it’s easy to see what drivers and passengers like about the car. The interior might not be Audilike premium, but it is still high quality,

spacious and functional. There is plenty of storage space, a whole host of safety features including a driver fatigue sensor and parking sensors front and back and an infotainment system that is straightforward to navigate. There are also plenty of the useful additions Škoda has become wellknown for, including a torch, umbrella and ice scraper (integrated in the fuel filler cap). Not forgetting the velcrobacked supports for holding items in the boot in place (officially called ‘universal
fixing elements’) – they’ve already had a lot of use in the past couple of months. We’ve gone for the 1.5 TSI petrol unit over any diesel offering and – mated to a seven-speed DSG – it provides ample power and is quiet and refined. The front wheels occasionally spin with unintended throttle input from a standstill, a hint at the 250Nm of torque on tap. After just over 2,000 miles, there is a lot of love for the Karoq. It might not be big, but it is certainly clever. John Challen

WE didn’t tick many option boxes when speccing our A6 Avant, so which were the wise choices? Metallic paint is a necessary option at £685, bucking residuals and improving on the rather uninspiring standard paint choice of flat white or flat black. The 20-inch alloys are an inch too far – the £910
upgrade impacting on ride quality (especially in the back seats). And charging nearly £500 for privacy glass seems a bit steep when it’s standard on cars such as the Q5. Next time, we’ll look into the interior upgrades and run the same analysis. Julian Kirk

FOUR months into its time on the Fleet World long-term fleet, and my Volvo V60 has faced its toughest test yet in the form of a family holiday. Despite its 529-litre boot being somewhat smaller than the 560 litres of the last estate I ran – the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer – I'm pleased to report that all my family and I needed for a week away still fitted, even if I couldn’t see out of the back window! Thankfully, with Volvo’s Surround View Monitor optionally fitted, this wasn’t an issue. The trip from home was pleasingly uneventful too, with me making the most of the adaptive cruise control on a busy pre-Easter schlep up the A1. It is a very simple system to use too, with all the controls on the sports
three-spoke steering wheel. With almost 3,500 miles on the clock, the V60 feels properly run in now, and as much as I love its easygoing character, extra performance and a more responsive auto box would be welcome and I reckon work better with its sportier R-Design trim. Martyn Collins
I HAVE covered a fair amount of miles behind the wheel of our AlphaCity Astra over the past few weeks, visiting clients far and wide. In my opinion, the Astra offers a comfortable driver experience, far superior to the BMW 3 Series we had before it. The only slight downside is a creaky dashboard that makes itself known when driving faster than 5mph – however, I have found that all of Motorhead’s albums rectify this situation perfectly through the useful Apple CarPlay connectivity. Another great feature of Apple CarPlay is that it reads your text messages, and tries (sometimes with hilarious results!) to get each word correct. The sat nav is also easy to use, plus the fuel economy seems to be decent – even at motorway speeds. With regard to the AlphaCity bookings, we do tend to put the system through its paces here, as there are a lot of people sharing the one vehicle. This makes booking appointments to see clients extremely challenging at times – especially when you can’t see who has it booked! Lost cards are also a problem – it would be great to see the system working through a mobile phone handset instead. Darren Brett *WLTP

Back a few months ago I said that one of the over-riding first – and ongoing – impressions of our Honda Civic has been the sheer wealth of safety equipment on board, due to the standard-fit Honda Sensing package of active safety technologies. I’m still impressed by these but there’s a couple of niggles with other safety-related things. Like the fact that I have to press the button agreeing that I’m responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle before I can do anything, even if it’s to switch off a traffic alert that’s suddenly blaring out. Or there’s the fact that the phone functionality on the Honda Connect system won’t let me dial any number, I can only select ones from my phonebook. Only it doesn’t store any that are on my phone’s SIM, only the ones saved direct to my phone. I guess slightly thwarted drivers are better than distracted ones though. Natalie Middleton

LIVING with a car beyond the usual week-long loan is always a learning experience, and the Outlander PHEV is generating plenty of talking points. A couple of months in, and I’ve discovered that it fits my new freelance lifestyle almost perfectly. I don’t have a typical working week; I’m mostly home-based but with frequent long trips, and I pitch in with school runs and other errands depending on deadlines and workload. The Outlander gets charged overnight, and for five days a week (if not six) it’s an electric vehicle. A 2530 mile electric range sounds short, but that’s usually plenty for a full day of local journeys – and those are mostly urban trips, where it’s desirable not to be adding to Cardiff’s noise or air pollution. On longer trips, the engine kicks in just before the Severn Bridge, so I’ve taken to finding opportunities to plug in. A lot of my meetings are with leasing companies and manufacturers, who often have chargers, so I’ve had chances to top up while parked. On a recent 300+ mile, double-meeting day trip, I averaged 49mpg with help from two short charging sessions. Plugging in during a trip to ALD Automotive in Bristol, I returned home averaging 89mpg. Renault looks to maintain LCV leadership with updates and an electric vision, says Dan Gilkes. Renault has updated its Trafic and Master vans, shown a concept version of the next generation Kangoo and launched a two-year trial of the electric, connected EZFLEX urban delivery vehicle. As part of the redesign, Trafic gets full LED headlights, standard on all but the most basic trim levels, offering a 34% improvement in visibility on dipped beam. Renault has installed a new 2.0-litre Euro 6d Temp diesel engine, delivering 120hp, 145hp and a range-topping 170hp. The 170hp engine delivers a 25hp boost over the previous generation, with a 40Nm uplift, to 380Nm, though Renault claims that the single variable turbo engine will offer up to a 10% fuel saving over the previous model. Renault will also offer an automated gearbox option in

Trafic, with the availability of a six-speed EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) gearbox on both the 145hp and 170hp engines. The van also benefits from an improved overall specification, with front and rear parking sensors and a rear parking camera on the options list, along with Trailer Swing Assist. The updated Master comes with a more upright grille and bumper, a higher bonnet line and LED headlights with the C-shaped daytime running light signiature that will be carried across all models. Inside, there’s a new dashboard design, with a 5” digital screen, revised steering wheel and improved seat fabrics. In-cab stowage has increased to 105 litres, with the availability of a smartphone charging pad and a choice of multimedia solutions, including Renault’s R-Link Evolution with media, nav plus Android and Apple connectivity. Euro 6d Temp/Euro IV, depending on version. Power has been boosted, to a maximum 180hp, with up to 400Nm of torque. Lower ratings include 165hp, 145hp and 130hp. There are updates to safety and driver assistance options, with Lane Departure Warning, Rear View Assist and Side Wind Assist on offer, while Autonomous Emergency Braking remains an option. The internal and external changes are adopted by Master Z.E. which can now be had in six versions, with two heights and three lengths. There are also two platform cab options available for the electric model, for conversion to high-capacity bodies of up to 22m3. We have to wait until next year for the new Kangoo, but the Kangoo Z.E. Concept previews much of the styling and appearance of the van. This includes the C-shaped lighting signature, more rounded shoulders and pronounced wheel arches, creating a tougher looking van than the current Kangoo. Renault has also unveiled the EZ-FLEX, a connected urban delivery vehicle that could be provided with a range of bodies. The company will be testing 10 of the vans with customers in Europe over the next two years. However, EX-FLEX will not stay the same throughout the two-year period, but will be constantly updated to meet changing customer needs as part of the development process. Renault’s commercial vehicle division is hoping to build on global sales of 620,000 vehicles in 2018, its best year ever and more than 34% up on the year before. With a €10bn turnover in 2018, Renault took a 6% share of the global LCV market. Much of that growth has come from China, where the company sells vans through the Renault Brilliance Jinbai company. Looking forwards, as with other manufacturers, Renault is looking at other services and transport solutions that can be sold alongside the actual van.

This will be driven by its Pro+ dealer network, which will grow from 660 dealers today, to a global total of more than 800 outlets by 2020. “We are not just selling a van, we are selling a full solution, finance, the vehicle and a range of services,” said Thierry Plantegenest, vice president of sales and marketing.

Plenty to see at the NEC Electric drive and connectivity the main features at a packed Commercial Vehicle Show, says Dan Gilkes. Hot on the heels of a very strong first quarter for van and truck sales, which may have been driven in part by a rush to register before the original Brexit date, there was no shortage of visitors to this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show in
Birmingham. Those making the trip were rewarded with plenty of new and updated vehicles, with electric vans in particular proving popular. These are some of the highlights and a few of the stories behind the headlines.
PSA GROUPE While Vauxhall was the first of the three PSA companies to take the wraps off a new van, unveiling the British-built Vivaro for the first time, Peugeot and Citroen were not to be outdone, surprising everyone with a duo of electric Relay and Boxer vans. Vauxhall’s fortunes have certainly taken a turn for the better under its new French parent company, with van sales up 28% year on year and new Combo sales rising by an incredible 70% so far this year. The addition of the latest Vivaro, based on the Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch, should continue that trend. The company has invested £100m in the Luton plant, taking capacity to 100,000 vans, so Vivaro needs to succeed. It will be offered in three trim levels, with six powertrain options and on two wheelbases. The van will come with Vauxhall’s Connect Box, providing access to a range of connected services, including e-call. This will be added to Combo in 2020. Vauxhall will also benefit from the recently updated Renault Master, which is built alongside its larger Movano model, bringing updated engines and a new look to the heavyweight van and completing a range-wide overhaul. The company will not stop there however, with news of an electric Vivaro in 2020 and a battery electric Combo by 2021. Arriving just in time for the show to open, Citroen’s Relay Electric and Peugeot’s Boxer Electric are converted by Turkish electric vehicle specialist BD Auto. Available with two battery options, the L1 and L2 vans will deliver up to 141 miles of range (NEDC), while the larger battery in L3 and L4 models will provide a 169-mile range. The vans are currently undergoing homologation, with no launch date announced. However, PSA has said that it will launch electric Expert and Dispatch models in 2020 and will update the existing Partner Electric and Berlingo Electric in 2021. The electric vans will come with an eight-year battery warranty. For those more interested in diesel power, Relay and Boxer get a new 2.2-litre engine, offering 120bhp and 140bhp in panel vans and 165bhp in chassis cab. Relay and Boxer, along with the mid-weight Expert and Disaptch, will also move to the four trim level line-up that has already been launched on Berlingo and Partner, including Worker and Grip models. Berlingo and Partner also now come with PSA’s connection box, providing access to a range of telematic and connectivity solutions. Dispatch and Expert will get the connectivity box in the summer.

FORD Ford will launch a 185bhp version of its 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine in both full size Transit and Transit Custom, while the larger rear-wheel drive model will also be available with a 10speed automatic transmission. There are bigger changes in store for Transit however, with the option of a 48V mild hybrid driveline that can deliver up to an 8% fuel improvement in stop/start travel, cutting CO2 emissions to 144g/km. Ford has been cutting weight on Transit, with an aluminium bonnet, a composite bulkhead and spin-formed wheels, to deliver an additional 80kg of payload in some models. The company is also incorporating a range of connectivity features, through the FordPass Connect onboard modem that is now standard on many Transit models. Those looking for approved conversions will welcome the news that Ford’s Qualified Vehicle Modifier programme now includes more than 35 bodybuilders and specialist converters. The latest additions include Bespoke Biodies, Alfred becker API, Ingimex, Clark Vehicle Conversions and Truckcraft Bodies among others.
TOYOTA
Toyota is building on the successful launch of the mid-weight Proace van, with the introduction in 2020 of the smaller Proace City. Based on the PSA Berlingo/Partner/Combo van, Proace City will come in two body lengths and two trim grades. Though displayed at the show, it is thought that Toyota UK will not bring in people-carrying car versions of the van. There have been changes elsewhere in the LCV line-up, with Hilux getting a cosmetic update in Invincible X form and additional equipment in lower grades. This includes standard Toyota Safety Sense equipment in lower trim models and the availability of vinyl seating in Active grade single and extra cab models, to meet customer demand. Also meeting buyer requests, Toyota will offer a higher Active trim level in the Land Cruiser Commercial models. Originally conceived in a back to basics trim, there will now be a second level with an automatic transmission, satnav, 17” alloys, dual zone air conditioning and a rear camera and parking sensors. Likewise, in Q4 Toyota will introduce a third trim level for Proace. The range-topping Proace Design will come with alloy wheels, a 7” ProTouch navigation system, Toyota Safety Sense and front and rear parking sensors.

LDV LDV will add a second model to its electric van line-up in 2020, with the launch of the EV30. Available with two battery options, the electric-only van offers up to 200 miles of range with the 53kWh battery, or 127 miles using a 35kWh battery. The company is claiming a rapid charge time of just 45 minutes, with a full AC charge of five hours. The EV30 has a 5m3 load capacity in standard form, rising to 6.3m3 in the longer wheelbase model. Thanks to an aluminium monocoque construction, the van boasts a full 1tonne carrying capacity. Importer Harris Automotive will provide full details nearer the January launch, but said that prices will start from just £22,000. LDV has also updated the V80 and EV80 vans, with a revised front end, improved interior design and the adoption of a Euro 6b diesel engine. The vans incorporate a 10” touchscreen with standard reversing camera and Apple and Android compatibility. The electric EV80 is proving a popular choice, with dairy delivery business Milk&More ordering more than 150 of the electric vans.

VOLKSWAGEN Volkswagen will finally bring electric vans to these shores later this year, though we will have to wait until 2021 for the largest e-Crafter model. The e-Caddy will arrive first, later this year, followed by e-Transporter in 2020. Converted by partner company ABT, the e-Caddy will come in Maxi form only, boasting a 4.2m3 capacity and a 636kg payload. The NEDC range is said to be 136 miles, from a 37.3kWh battery pack. The larger e-Transporter will also be offered with the 37.3kWh pack, offering a 129-mile range, or with a 74.6kWh battery delivering up to 250 miles. Payload range from 1,186kg for the single battery model to 695kg for the longdistance e-Transporter.

and double-cab layouts. The vehicles have been factorypainted in SSE’s Sapphire Blue livery and come with dedicated rear bodies and all-terrain tyres. Isuzu has also won business from the RAC. Working together with Strongs Plastic Products, Isuzu and RAC have developed a breakdown patrol vehicle that can carry the All-Wheels-Up recovery system. This allows the trucks to haul stranded vehicles up to 2.8-tonnes in weight, covering 90% of today’s passenger cars. The first 50 RAC Heavy Duty patrol vans will be deployed across the UK.
Isuzu continues to add to its D-Max pickup range, with the launch of the D-Max SAFIR, from Arctic Trucks and the even more extreme D-Max XTR. The XTR will sit between the standard Blade model and the Arctic Truck-modified pickups. It boasts a suspension upgrade, with an aggressive body kit and styling, amongst a host of specification upgrades. Of more interest to business users, Isuzu is winning in the fleet arena. The company has announced a deal with energy supplier SSE for 215 D-Max trucks, in a mix of single, extended

MAN Truck & Bus has added to its TGE van and chassis cab line with the launch of a Flatframe Chassis Cowl. Built specifically for conversions, the front-wheel drive chassis cowl sits 190mm lower than a standard TGE chassis cab, for high volume Luton and box body conversions. With no back to the cab, the chassis cowl can be easily integrated into bespoke bodies, such as motorhomes. MAN has also added a 17-seat minibus to its ready-built range of TGE conversions. Built by Minibus Options, the 5tonne TGE 5.180 can be configured to carry the driver plus 16 seated passengers, 14 seated passengers and a wheelchair user or 10 passengers and two wheelchairs.

BD AUTO Turkish electric vehicle specialist BD Auto was not only present on the PSA group stand, where its Citroen Relay Electric and Peugeot Boxer Electric conversions were unveiled. The company also had its own BD Ducato conversion on the Paneltex stand, where the electric van had been converted for refrigerated goods use. BD Auto was formed in 2009, but has been developing electric driveline products since the late 90s. The company started providing van powertrains in Europe in 2015, to TNT and DHL in the Netherlands. It then moved into the UK in 2016 and to France in 2017. The deal to convert PSA Groupe vehicles will see a big expansion in BD Auto’s activities, particularly in the UK. It currently has a UK base near London providing sales and service to customers including Ocado and Sainsburys. The company can supply electric vans at 3.5, 4.0 and 4.25-tonnes gross weight and with a choice of single or double battery packs. It also provides long-term rental of electric vans, to supermarkets and other customers, from its London base. Conversions are not limited to the Sevel product (Fiat and PSA), though most other manufacturers now have their own electric van supplies.
MITSUBISHI
Mitsubishi took the wraps off a Shogun Sport SVP concept at the show, boasting the usual combination of larger wheels and tyres and upgraded suspension. Of more interest however was a standard Shogun Sport in a Police livery, showing that the company has been able to maintain its links with the emergency services since the dropping of the previous Shogun and Shogun Commercial last year.
SMMT The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has produced a report that demonstrates that one in 10 UK workers uses or depends on a van for their work, a total of 3.4m people. The report – Light Commercial Vehicles: Delivering For The Economy - states that vans contribute £56bn to the UK economy from wages alone, which is 11% of UK GDP. Figures show that there are now 4.4m vans on UK roads, along

with 605,000 trucks, delivering 200,000t of goods every hour. “The UK’s van fleet is the backbone of our society, driving our economy and allowing millions of workers to carry out jobs that our country relies on,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive. “To continue to thrive, this vital sector needs policies and incentives that encourage businesses to invest in the latest technology, that best suits their needs to help them deliver for Britain.”

SsangYong Musso The updated Musso offers a lot of pickup truck for the money, says Dan Gilkes. When SsangYong changed from the previous Korando Sport pickup to the Musso truck last year, the company offered buyers far more than a name change. Musso represents a totally new appearance, both inside and out. Power, from a 2.2-litre diesel engine, is increased to 181bhp at a rather heady 4,000rpm, with 400Nm of torque available from a much more useful 1,600rpm. You can choose between a six-speed manual gearbox or a sixspeed automatic, for a very reasonable £1,000 extra. If you are looking to tow, it’s worth considering that only the auto-equipped truck can pull the full 3.5-tonnes, with the manual limited to 3.2-tonnes. Both versions can still carry a full 1.0-tonne load in the back though, even when towing at full capacity. That said, the SsangYong does have a fairly short pickup bed in comparison to some competitors. It would have been nice to have a ladder rack or styling bar to tie longer items to at the back of the cab on this working model too. The company is talking about bringing in a Musso Grand, with a longer bed, later in the year. SsangYong was the first pickup manufacturer to offer coil spring rear suspension and this is carried over to the Musso, with double-wishbones up

front. This makes for a very civilised ride, with accomplished handling for a truck of this size. Indeed, the Musso cab is a comfortable place to spend the day, with low noise levels and a relaxed cruise. There is more than enough power to keep pace with traffic and the high riding position provides good visibility. It has fairly light steering, making it easy to manoeuvre in town and off-road, though it can initially feel a little light at speed on the motorway. A simple rotary switch brings the front wheels into play in four-wheel drive high, while you need to stop to engage the lower gear ratios for more serious off-roading. All Musso models are double-cab and four-wheel drive and the range kicks off with this fleet-spec EX model, at just £20,995 without the VAT. Though an entry-level truck, the Musso EX comes with 17” alloys, manual air conditioning, electric windows, rain sensing wipers and auto headlights. The infotainment is a bit basic, but the radio provides Bluetooth connectivity for safe mobile phone use. You can go up through Rebel, Saracen and Rhino trim levels, with specifications and prices rising in equal measure. Yet, for many, this EX manual truck offers all the pick-up that you need and at that price it comes in considerably less expensive than most of the competition.
The company claims a reasonable 35.8mpg should be possible, with CO2 ratings of 211g/km for the manual model. Service intervals come around once a year, or at 12,500-mile intervals and all Mussos get SsangYong’s market-leading seven-year/150,000mile warranty, which should provide peace of mind for fleets.
