Fletcher Sibthorp Born in Hertfordshire, England in 1967, Fletcher Sibthorp has had a successful career as a painter since graduating with Honours from Kingston School of Art in 1989. Primarily a figurative painter, Fletcher draws his inspiration from many different sources: books, music, travel and in particular he is noted for his paintings of dance performances. Fletcher has always been attracted by the concept of movement and its effect on the human form. This naturally led to his interest in sport and abstract portrayals of gymnasts and atheletes, culminating in the exhibition ‘In Motion’ in London 1992. Fletcher was approached by Sadler’s Wells in 1995 to produce a painting for the Flamenco troupe Paco Pena. The movement and expressive quality in his work complemented the passion and the strength of Flamenco. He has continued his involvement with dance and this exhibition includes paintings and studies of Flamenco and other contemporary dance studies. The gallery will also be showing Fletcher’s figure studies and portraits. Unlike his dance paintings, these works are still and reflective, showing a comtemplative and atmospheric mood. ‘To interpret weight, form, light and then the flow and line of the human form is the challenge. To be able to create the body with as much economy as possible, like Gustav Klimt’s drawings, is the ultimate goal. As a figurative painter, I also like the way you are involving the viewer. You are asking them to interpret and add their own experiences to the painting. People cannot help but associate, or relate to a figurative work.’ Fletcher Sibthorp
