I really like chocolate, but I don't have it very often. I'm afraid of getting fat again, as I was several years ago. But if it’s chocolate with a high cocoa content,1 I can’t resist 2 it. However, I don't have it more than once a month.

I like chocolate - it calms3 me down. But when I have too much of it, I put on weight. So I have to watch myself. I prefer milk chocolate, but I also like dark and white chocolate. It’s interesting how much energy we can get from just a piece of chocolate.

I don’t want to look like a sumo wrestler! I only have it on special occasions. My favourite is milk chocolate. I read somewhere that chocolate helps when you feel sad - and it’s true!

It certainly helps me.

I eat a lot of chocolate. I really like it! I prefer milk and white chocolate, but other flavours are good too. I usually have a bit in the afternoon when I come home from school and need something sweet after a hard day’s work. Or perhaps in the evening when I’m on the computer.

Kryštof, 15 Sure I love chocolate, but I don’t have it very often.

My favourites are milk chocolate and white chocolate. I usually only have one or two pieces of chocolate at once. I can’t eat a whole bar of chocolate:4 I don’t like sweet stuff that much.

So I only have chocolate when I want to… and that’s not often.

There are three main types of chocolate: dark, milk and white. Dark chocolate has more than 35% of cocoa solids5 and is made with some sugar, but usually no milk.

Extra dark chocolate contains 70–90% cocoa solids.

Milk chocolate is lighter in colour and sweeter than dark chocolate. There’s more milk, sugar and cocoa bu er in it.

White chocolate is made without cocoa solids, and is in fact mostly cocoa bu er, sugar and milk. In a lot of countries you can’t even call it chocolate!

HEALTH BENEFITS OF CHOCOLATE Practically everyone loves chocolate – kids and adults alike. Luckily for us, scientists love chocolate, too, and they give us a lot of good reasons to eat our favorite sweet treat. / RYAN KELLEY (USA)

If you feel bad about eating a piece of chocolate, don’t!

It’s not as bad as you think, no matter what your dentist says. Just choose high-quality chocolate, preferably dark; milk and white varieties contain1 too much sugar and fat. If you eat just a piece or two, you will be doing an excellent thing for your health. Dark chocolate is a plant-based2 food with many health benefits.

Happiness-Maker Chocolate contains serotonin, a natural antidepressant that makes us feel happier (or less depressed). Chocolate also stimulates endorphin production, which creates feelings of happiness and pleasure. That's why so many people reach for chocolate when they feel blue.*

Cancer-Fighter Several studies show that chocolate is one of the best cancer3-fighting foods. As well as green tea, garlic, red wine, blueberries and green vegetables, chocolate con4 |

tains a lot of antioxidants and flavonoids, which can prevent4 inflammation5 and cell6 damage. Antioxidants protect the body from ageing7 and flavonoids protect the body from UV radiation.

Heart-Supporter Dark chocolate is very good for the heart. It keeps the cardiovascular system running well because it helps to reduce8 blood pressure and LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol). Dark chocolate contains healthy fat (cocoa butter).

Mineral Source Minerals are vital for our health. Chocolate contains minerals like copper, magnesium, potassium and iron. Eating chocolate rich in minerals will keep us full of energy and appetite, and give us mental and physical strength. Minerals also help to prevent headaches and fatigue.9 Web task

CACAO

Chocolate is made from the seeds of the cocoa tree (also known as the cacao tree). There are about 30 to 50 seeds in one bean. The beans change color from green or purple to red. Chocolate-making companies buy them to produce many types of chocolate and chocolate candy. Warning: visiting a chocolate factory might be interesting, but risky.

Just watch out for Oompa-loompas!

Brain Power Many tests on rats show that eating chocolate improves memory, attention and problem-solving skills. Scientists must do more tests to see if it works with humans the same way. What do you think? Any volunteers?

There are many flavors: lavender truffles, banana chocolate, chilli and pepper, chilli and lime, almond dark, hazelnut milk, praline, mint, orange and many others. Try one, or try them all.

Sweets for the sweet – but only humans Dark chocolate contains fiber that is good for our digestion. It also contains caffeine and theobromine which stimulate the body. Theobromine is a good cough medicine, but it can be toxic for dogs and cats. They don’t have the specific enzyme to metabolize it as effectively as humans. Animals like dogs, cats and horses can get intoxicated by chocolate, or even die. So if your dog loves the taste of chocolate or your cat has got a sweet tooth,** don’t share your candy with them.

C H O CO L AT E S UR PR IS E What about chocolatecovered insects? On the Internet you can buy edible insects hand-dipped in chocolate, e.g. grasshoppers, worms, larvae and crickets.
