The 22ND ANNUAL FLICKERS’ RHODE ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (RIIFF), welcomes stellar filmmaking talents from all over the world to beautiful Providence, Rhode Island—one of America’s oldest and most beloved cities. For two decades, RIIFF has embraced its visitors with the sort of warmhearted, independent spirit that fosters long-lasting friendships, sparks exciting creative projects, and inspires guests to return again and again. It’s little wonder that Chris Gore’s Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide praises RIIFF as “the kind of intimate festival experience that will change your life.” In 2017, RIIFF presented 310 films out of 6,217 films entered in competition, representing 48 countries and welcomed 431 filmmakers, producers, cast, and crew. Now it’s gearing up to be even bigger and better than ever, maintaining its reputation as the largest and most visible film festival in New England. With a slew of unique offerings— including the Rhode Island Film Forum, ScriptBiz, The Future Filmmaking Symposium, Film Preservation Forum, Flickers’ Mentorship Program, Film Youth Jury, Virtual Reality Workshops, extended Filmmaking and Animation Workshops for kids featuring accepted filmmakers, and a closing night block party —RIIFF ensures each of its participating visitors is treated to an enriching, inspiring, and unpredictable festival experience. RIIFF is proud to be one of 10 Festivals in the world that is an Academy Award qualifier in the Live Action, Animation and Documentary Short categories and a qualifier with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). With vanguard programming that seeks to showcase new voices in independent filmmaking from across the globe, RIIFF serves as an exceptional platform from which to launch exciting careers. Ten films that have premiered at RIIFF have won Academy Awards with a total of 63 have been nominated, while many have gained distribution with the likes of HBO, Showtime, and IFC. A wide range of competitive categories—including Horror, Children’s, Gay & Lesbian, Documentary, Science Fiction, and Animated films—offers entrants and audience members a veritable buffet of great stories, surprises, and narrative formats. There’s even a screenplay and teleplay competition, designed to give talented screen scribes some welldeserved industry credibility. At RIIFF, there’s no shortage of ways to get noticed!

Welcome to the 22nd Annual Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival. The RIIFF has been a Rhode Island institution for over two decades. We are very proud of the festival’s continued commitment to local and international cinema and their celebration of filmmakers and filmgoers alike. The RIIFF is one of only 26 festivals world-wide that serves as an Academy Awards live action, animation and documentary short qualifier. This festival is world-renowned for showcasing innovative and impressive works of art, and as the largest film festival in the Ocean State, the quality of this year’s RIIFF is no exception. With the acceptance of 295 films, spanning 48 countries and 84 world or US premieres, Rhode Island remains a place where artists and fans thrive. The work of non-profit arts organizations like the RIIFF, are vital to New England’s future. None of this could be possible without their advocacy and encouragement, nor could this be done without the support of this festival’s sponsors. On behalf of the City of Providence, I thank everyone involved in this wonderful event. I wish the best of luck to all of 2018 RIIFF participants, and I hope you enjoy your time in the Creative Capital. Sincerely,

Jorge O. Elorza Mayor of Providence www.RIFilmFest.org www.RIFilmFest.org

Flickers held the state’s first International Film Festival in Newport in 1983, which laid the foundation for today’s Rhode Island International Film Festival. During its fi rst five years exhibiting fi lm, Flickers screened more than 475 titles, of which many were state and regional premieres. Some examples that demonstrate the breadth of films exhibited include “Amadeus,” “Flight of the Eagle,” “The Man from Snowy River,” “Parting Glances,” Truffaut’s “Confidentially Yours,” Bergman’s “Fanny & Alexander,” Fassbinder’s “Querelle,” Franco Zeffirelli’s lush “La Traviata,” Bertolucci’s uncut “1900,” the premiere of the independent fi lm “Coaster,” the restored print of Gloria Swanson’s epic “Queen Kelly,” Fellini’s “And the Ship Sails On,” and “My Beautiful Laundrette.” The society sponsored specialized film series, lectures, and forums including one at the screening of “Man of Iron,” which featured Cheslaw Kyanka, founder of the Polish Solidarity Union. The Society also presented lectures for colleges and organizations on topics from Italian Neo-Realism to fi lm programming. It even organized travel programs to study international media centers in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, and Athens. Over the past 36 years, Flickers has changed directions, taken detours, and charted new routes. The organization has been impacted by the hard work, vision, and commitment of so many people that it would be wrong to personally take credit for where we are today. No one person is responsible for the success of what was originally envisioned as a way to meet people, make friends, and share a common love of film. Some of these people have actually been with us for this quarter century. Others have drifted in and out, some have moved on, but all have been touched in some way by this organization. Today, programming efforts cover a broad range of areas -from arts to humanities to social services to production to educational outreach to programming on PBS -multiple linkages and numerous collaborations have been established. Flickers continues to evolve with the needs and demands of the community it serves. It has never lost sight of its mission, and continues its quest to create inventive and cutting-edge programming. It has been an amazing adventure and one that was completely unforeseen at its beginning. As we head into our 37th year this November, and celebrate the 22nd Anniversary of the Rhode Island International Film Festival. This year we mark a year-long salute to Women in Film and dedicate our Festival to the amazing, Winifred Brownell. We salute all the wonderful people who created RIIFF and sustained it over the past 20 plus years. It’s a long, long list of special folks who have touched my life All are linked by a passion and commitment you cannot find anywhere else: the love of film that served as Flickers’ founding inspiration. My sincere thanks!

RHODE ISLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL | LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Letter from the Director

It was around 1979 that I started thinking about creating a small film society whose sole purpose was to discover and screen classic, foreign, and cutting edge film. I had picked up a book entitled “How to Organize and Run a Film Society,” and I played with the idea over the next several years. In 1981, I formalized my ideas and created “Flickers—The Newport Film Society.” It was very much a “Field of Dreams” experience: I built it and people came. Our first screening took place at the then-named Van Alen Casino Theatre in Newport. The screening was in January 1983. The film was Fellini’s “Amarcord.” One hundred seventy fi ve people showed up and from there, Flickers was launched.

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN FILM AND ARTS

JOSEPH M. ALVES THE MAKER OF DREAMS Joseph M. Alves, Jr. is a visionary master of production design, best known for his work on the three Jaws films. Alves has designed three features for Steven Spielberg starting with The Sugarland Express. He designed the three mechanical sharks for the movie Jaws (1975) with mechanical effects man Bob Mattey supervising their physical construction in Sun Valley CA. After the sharks were completed, they were trucked to the shooting location, and what happened next is part of film lore. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and won the BAFTA for Best Art Direction for his work on Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Alves worked on Jaws 2 (1978) in the capacity of both production designer and as second unit director. The model of New York he created for John Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981) has been described as "memorably derelict", and he was visual consultant on Carpenter's Starman (1984). He directed Jaws 3-D (1983), which took advantage of the revival in popularity of 3-D at the time. He has been married to Jerri Lauridsen since April 29, 1990. They have two children.

CELEBRATING A YEAR OF WOMEN IN FILM AND THE ARTS Beginning on Tuesday, August 7th, we are proud to announce a special yearlong “CELEBRATION OF WOMEN IN FILM AND ARTS” will be launched (#WomenInTheArts) by Flickers. In a recent study by The Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, at San Diego State University, RIIFF was one of 23 “ high profile” film festivals in the United States that was surveyed. What was striking about the study was that women accounted for 29 percent of directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the indie films screened at the examined U.S. festivals in 2017-18. At the Rhode Island International Film Festival, that number was 41 percent with films selected by an international team of judges for quality, not a quota. On Opening Night, we will be updating those statistics from numbers culled from this year’s Festival. RIIFF films are adjudicated on quality, not a quota. To celebrate this achievement, the Festival has dedicated this year’s event to Dr. Winifred E. Brownell, a groundbreaking educator and Dean Emerita of the Arts and Sciences at the University of Rhode Island. Her visionary work propelled the University to become a leading hub for film media studies and nurtured the Festival during its infancy, spurring it to become the internationally acclaimed event that it is today. The Festival is also establishing a $2,000 annual scholarship in her name that pays recognition to her career championing the arts and humanities at the University of Rhode Island and a leading female voice in higher education.

Shouldn’t all Rhode Islanders have access to the arts? The arts are more than just an important part of our state’s economy. For young people, the arts are a path to success. The arts contribute to achievement in school, particularly among disadvantaged students. For cities and towns, the arts promote civic engagement and encourage neighborhood and downtown revitalization. They make our communities more liveable. With all that’s good about the arts , shouldn’ t all Rhode Islanders be able to enjoy and participate in what our state has to offer?

That’s where we come in. Rhode Island’s investment in the arts is small (just 7/100 ths of 1% of our state’s budget). With that, we managed to reach over 1.2 million Rhode Islanders and visitors last year, including over 189,000 young people. Let’s ensure that all Rhode Islanders can benefit from the arts in the Ocean State.
