ORIENTATION 2011 WHEN IS ORIENTATION? Orientation Activities for ALL students run from February 21– February 25. In addition, there are other activities in February specific to degrees and/ or being an international student, listed on the following pages that many students will need to attend. So it is really important you check through all the tables on the following pages and make sure you attend all you need to. Use your ‘My Orientation Schedule’ on page 20 to plan what you need to attend.

WHAT IS ORIENTATION? Transitioning to university, like starting high school or a new job, involves many changes socially, emotionally, academically and environmentally. Here at Flinders we want to make this transition as easy for you as possible. Orientation is about becoming familiar with your surroundings and knowing where to go should the need for help arise. Flinders University Orientation Week activities are designed to assist with your transition to university by helping you become more comfortable and confident with the academic and social aspects of university life. Yes, you are expected to attend. With many important activities held during Orientation Week Flinders University considers it the official start of the academic year. All Centrelink payments, including the Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy, start at the beginning of O’ Week, so if you thought you couldn’t afford to spend the week at Flinders, think again. Orientation week is an essential time to be on campus as there are many opportunities to gain further information about your course, participate in programs designed to make study easier and make friends by participating in the many social activities facilitated by the Faculties and Support Services. As Flinders University is big, we recommend you arrive 30 minutes early. For students attending information sessions at Sturt buildings, please note this campus is a 15 minute walk from Flinders central, however parking is also available at Sturt. ... Enjoy your first year! 6

SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION TO UNI... TRANSITION TO UNIVERSITY IS A BIG AND EXCITING STEP! We’ve set up a special Get Connected web site for students in their first year, full of ideas on how you can make a great start at university. Visit www.flinders.edu.au/getconnected You will find tips from students, articles on strategies for leading a successful and enriching life at uni, and an easy reference online guide to Student Services.

1

YOUR FIRST STEP to settling in will be to find your way around, learn how things work, understand what’s expected of you and what you can expect of others. If you are unsure about anything, want advice, or just need clarification, then ask. Don’t worry - you won’t be the only person doing so, and chances are the person you ask went through the same thing once.

2

STEP TWO is to be sure about the study path you’ve chosen. Most people find their course exciting and rewarding, but some may sense quite quickly that their course decision is not working for them. It is usually possible to change direction - uni is quite flexible these days. While it’s important not to rush things, there are some important dates to be aware of, and it is best to talk it over with staff that can assist you here at Flinders.

Don’t forget - you can email your queries directly to us at: getconnected@flinders.edu.au or call the Transition Office on 8201 3121

GUIDE FOR RURAL, INTERSTATE AND INT SHIFTING FROM THE COUNTRY, INTERSTATE, OR OVERSEAS? Welcome to Flinders … and welcome to Adelaide. This section of the guide is specifically for students who are about to join us from country areas of South Australia or from interstate or overseas [and there’s information relevant for all new students]. We recognise there are additional pressures on those who are facing the “double change” – home and study – and we’ve got some tips on how to cope. If you’re moving to Adelaide the following pages will give you an idea of the issues you need to think about. To find out more, log on to: www.flinders.edu. au/students/rural or get in touch with the Transition Office by phoning 8201 3121 or email: getconnected@flinders.edu.au.

PLANNING FOR BIG CHANGES The key word here is “planning” – for a new life, not just a new course. Speak to friends and relatives about how to start looking after yourself. Get advice on how to develop systems and routines. Most importantly, discuss how – and how often – you’ll stay in touch with family and friends [See our tips on page 40 about bringing “home” with you]. If possible, work out where to live before arriving in Adelaide. You need a secure home base before you tackle everything that’s new on campus. And when you do get to Adelaide, make it a priority to find out where things are and how to get around. Once uni starts, work out your priorities and how best to fit them in to what can become busy days. What’s essential and what can wait? And be realistic about how much time it takes to get things done. It’s important to have things in your life besides study, but don’t crank up the extra activities too hard too early. We’ve set up a web site to help first year students make the transition to uni. It’s at: www.flinders.edu.au/get connected

ERNATIONAL STUDENTS WHAT’S UNI LIKE?

WHAT’S ADELAIDE LIKE?

Big. Exciting. A bit daunting. But not entirely foreign. Think of it as a natural progression in your life and an opportunity to build on your strengths and focus on what you’re really interested in. If you’ve just finished school the biggest difference you’ll notice is the freedom, and with it the need to self motivate and discipline yourself. The best advice for students new to Adelaide is to make it a priority to meet people. In some courses this is easy because you all study together, but if you’re constantly moving between different lectures with different groups it can be very easy to get lost in the crowd. Get involved with whatever’s going on and don’t assume others will make the first move. Ask people to join you for a coffee to discuss a lecture or just chat. If you know people from your area who are starting at Flinders make a point of staying in touch. It’s easy to lose contact with people on a big campus.

The short answer is that, like most cities, it’s what you make of it. Adelaide’s great strength is that it’s big enough to have plenty going on but small enough that you can get around to everything. Here are some useful web sites to get a feel for the place: • Rip it Up www.ripitup.com.au • DB Magazine www.dbmagazine.com.au • Spinach: What’s on in Adelaide www.spinach.org.au/whats_on/calendar. htm • Go online: Pub Club Bar Guide www.goonline.com.au • Blaze: Out and About in Adelaide www.blazemedia.com.au • SA Central: Sports, Leisure & Entertainment www.sacentral.sa.gov.au/

GETTING AROUND

LIVING ON CAMPUS…

If you can afford to run a car, that’s great – but it’s not essential. Adelaide’s public transport system is pretty good and buses run to the heart of campus. A 10-trip ticket for students costs around $30.00 and you can travel for two hours, and change buses, on each “trip”. To find out how much it costs to park on campus check out: www.flinders. edu.au/campus/location/parking.cfm. Our Green Transport Office has information on everything from walking and cycling to bus routes and ridesharing. Check out: www.flinders.edu.au/campus/location

Flinders gives you the chance to live on the campus, just a five minute walk from the heart of the action – both academic and social. In fact, we are the only South Australian university with on-campus accommodation in the metropolitan area. There are two options: University Hall, which offers a stimulating communal environment without compromising your need for your own space, and the self-contained Deirdre Jordan Village. In both the Hall and the Village you’ll have your own furnished bedroom, with a phone and internet connection, and access to a full kitchen or kitchenette. In the Hall you enjoy 15 meals a week in the dining room. There are a wide range of social, sporting and cultural activities and facilities, and residential tutors are available to help with your studies. In the Village you share self-contained 2, 3 or 5-bedroom units and have the opportunity to become involved in a wide range of activities. Both communities are very multicultural and give you the chance to make friends from around the world ... You’re also near a bus stop providing direct services to the city, the beach and the nearby Marion Shopping Centre.

WHO CAN HELP? Visit our web site at: www.flinders.edu.au/ students/rural to find out more about your transition to Flinders or get in touch with the Transition Office for advice and assistance.

To find out more about living on campus or receive an application form phone (08) 8291 6000, email: flinders.housing@flinders.edu.au or visit: www.flinders.edu.au/housing

…OR SETTING UP ON YOUR OWN If you’d rather board or share a house or flat, we can help there too. The Flinders Housing Accommodation Service keeps up-to-date lists of what’s available, as well as assisting with issues related to bonds, rent relief, and your rights and obligations as a tenant. You can access a list of available accommodation at any time at: www.flinders.edu.au/housing/ accomodation.html. Remember, being close to uni is great, but if you’ll be catching the bus each day then direct routes are an even bigger consideration than distance. When renting, you’ll probably be required to sign a lease, pay a bond and provide a month’s rent in advance. Also keep in mind that if you are moving to Adelaide that most rental properties are not furnished so you’ll need to provide for some establishment costs.

MONEY MATTERS If you are concerned about costs and would like information and assistance with living on a low income while studying at Flinders University, you can talk to the Financial Counsellor in the Student Assist Office, located off the Plaza, on 8201 2371.

TOP 10 TIPS 1.

Give yourself time to settle in. Don’t feel you have to hit the ground running and be able to manage everything perfectly from the start.

2.

Make friends. And remember that most first years are trying to do the same. You’re not the only person who feels they don’t know anyone.

3.

Turn up to classes. Lectures aren’t compulsory, but it’s easy to fall behind if you start missing a few. Even if you’re not feeling great, make the effort.

4. 5.

Keep up. Follow your weekly reading guides – don’t leave it all until exam time.

6.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Every other student on campus is a first year or used to be one. They know what you are going through.

7.

Keep a balance in life. Eat well, get enough sleep, go out and have fun, but don’t overdo the partying or the part-time work.

8. 9.

Use our support services. And do it as soon as you need them. They’re here for you, and they’re free.

Be positive about yourself. Your ability and attitude got you into uni so there’s no reason to have doubts!

Plan ahead. In the first week you’ll be given a course outline for each subject that will list your assignments and their due dates.

10. Reward yourself. Recognise your achievements (a successful assignment, getting to all your classes) and celebrate them.

DECIDING TO GO TO UNIVERSITY IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST ‘LIFE CHOICES’ ANY OF US CAN MAKE. This decision is significantly magnified for rural students because it marks not only a transition from high school to university, but also changing from life in the country to city living. …. let three rural Flinders students share their experiences with you…. Like many first-year Flinders students from rural areas, Brad, Eddie and Caroline were initially daunted by the prospect of attending university in the city. However, by utilising some of the University’s services and devising their own tools for coping with the change all three have managed to make a successful transition to university life on both counts. All three agree that, initially, their biggest concern with coming to a university in the city was leaving their friends behind and having to start anew. Eddie, a Behavioural Science (Management) student, says he found that if you lack the courage to simply walk up to someone new and introduce yourself, there are plenty of avenues on campus through which you can meet other people. “If you find meeting new people difficult, join a club or society that you are interested in. It is an easy way to make new friends as you would share a similar interest”, he said. International Business student Brad agrees with this, but found that joining a sporting club or society also provided him with an interest outside of university, which he believes is another essential step towards making the experience more enjoyable. “Everyone needs something to do other than uni – play sport, get a job, or join a club”, Brad says. “Without one of these activities you will find it harder to make friends and you will be more likely to want to go home”. For Caroline, who is completing a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, being part of several groups on campus helped her to feel more accepted in the university community and also showed her that, despite what she believed, she

wasn’t alone in being overwhelmed by her initial university experience. Another tool she used to combat those feelings was to make sure she was organised and remained on top of her study workload. “Don’t fall behind (with your study), remember there are lecturers and demonstrators to help you. However, you need to be mindful of the fact that there is a lot of extra work that needs to be done at home – it is very different from high school”, Caroline said. The increase in study workload is something Eddie also noticed when he first arrived at uni, but says he found it easier to deal with after taking advantage of the various study skills services available at Flinders. “O’ Week was very helpful in obtaining study skills information”, he says. “There is a study skills centre here designed to help students learn the different approach required to study at university which can help with the transition”, Eddie suggests if you are ever having difficulties with elements of your course work you are unsure of or if you are not convinced your approach to the next assignment is correct, never be afraid to approach your lecturers for help. He says he found that his lecturers and tutors were always willing to help him with any problems he had with his study, and on the occasion when they couldn’t answer his questions, they would point him in the direction of someone who was able to provide the solutions. Having the confidence to ask questions is something that Brad has found essential to coping with university life. He says that despite the preconception many rural people have that city folk are difficult to approach, Adelaide people will gladly answer any question you may have. “This especially applies to uni staff members and business people in the community”, he says. “You will not get far in the city if you don’t have the confidence to ask for directions, help or advice”, Brad also insists that having a positive attitude to the entire Flinders experience is of vital importance. “Be happy – Don’t let study get you down. Don’t let life get you down. Don’t let people get you down”, he says. “There are people and services available to you at all times all over campus; take advantage of them and enjoy the experience”.

BRINGING ‘HOME’ WITH YOU...

40

1.

Set a reliable schedule for phoning or emailing your family and friends. This will give you a chance to hear the news from home, share your new experiences – and have a whinge when you need to.

2.

Bring some pictures of your old hangouts, home, pets, family and friends to put up in your room. This can also be a good way to start conversations with new friends in Adelaide.

3.

Invite a friend or family member to visit you. Most of us are more positive when we are showing someone else around our new space.

4.

Are there local specialties that you miss from home; really delicious foods, unique smells, or something else? Ask someone from home to send a care package.

5.

There’s likely to be somewhere in town that is a little bit like home. Try hanging out there and starting your own new tradition.
