Yet it was, in fact, his burgeoning passion for photography that led Sendi below the surface of the ocean in the late 70s because, as he says with a smile, there are only so many photos of coconut trees that you can take. Hammerheads are returning to Rasdhoo in greater quantities than most can remember. Dive centres in the southern atolls are reporting an unprecedented number of sharks on almost every dive. It’s not only the numbers of sharks that is getting local divers excited, either. More and more frequently there are now stories of encounters with the rarer species. A narrow channel dive with a ‘thila’ (underwater plateau) at the centre, this site often experiences strong currents and is for more advanced shark-seekers looking for highadrenaline diving.

Maya Thila, South Ari Atoll: A small thila with a shallow top reef at 3m, Maya Thila presents the opportunity to see grey reef sharks from depths of 5m. A brilliant site for open water divers looking for an unforgettable shark experience and a favourite spot for night dives.

Fushifaru Channel, Lhaviyani Atoll: On the Eastern edge of this northern atoll, Fushifaru is fast developing a reputation as a shark hotspot. jeopardy. What’s more, it is undoubtedly hypocritical for a country so committed to the protection of its native sharks to continue to provide a demand for the death of sharks in foreign waters. Calling for a total ban on import is now the next step for Sendi.

Despite this heartening news, Sendi still has concerns. In a country that has been a global role model for marine protection, one might be surprised to see endless lines of gaudy shark jaws adorning the window displays of the gift shops of Male’. It is these decidedly tacky souvenirs that have been occupying Sendi’s thoughts of late. How can a country with a nation-wide ban RQ ERWK VKDUN ÞVKLQJ DQG H[SRUW VR RSHQO\ VHOO WKHVH SURGXFWV" 7KH DQVZHU LV IRXQG LQ RQH YHU\ VLJQLÞFDQW ORRSKROH LQ WKH ODZ Whilst its export is categorically banned, the import of shark products is not. This, of course, leaves those unsuspecting tourists who do choose to purchase these items at risk of being prosecuted when trying to leave the country with them.

As with so many previous campaigns for changes in marine law, it is the indigenous diving community that is pressing for the ban. Nevertheless, in a country that sees more than a million tourists pass through its borders per year, Sendi believes that foreign countries can also make an impact. A new wave of eco-tourists ready to pay for environmentally friendly experiences should not be underestimated.

A quick survey of these gift shops will show that jaws of all shark species are on sale. What’s more interesting, however, is a small fact that most might overlook. These jaws are the only product to be displayed outside the shops, rather than inside. There’s only one reason for this. They smell. For Sendi, it is this small detail that hints at something more ominous. “If they smell, it means they are freshâ€? he explains, “and if they’re fresh, it means they haven’t had to travel far to reach usâ€?. Does Sendi think that these tourist keepsakes are in fact RULJLQDWLQJ IURP 0DOGLYLDQ ZDWHUV , DVN" p, don’t think,â€? he replies, “I knowâ€?.
