Most influences are results of previous colonization, deriving mainly from the culture of Spain and the United States. It is a mixture of Malayo-Polynesian and Hispanic cultures with an influence of Chinese. Their art, music, architecture and dance are all influenced by the mixture of these people. Despite all of these influences, the old Asian culture of Filipinos has been retained and are clearly seen in their way of life, beliefs and customs. 80% of Filipino people practice the Christian religion, making up about 80% of the Philippine population (mostly Catholics) while Islam is 11%.

GULF CRAFT MARKS
Years
IN THE MALDIVES
Gulf Craft operates a world-class manufacturing facility in the Maldives and has announced new investment to develop the ‘Gulf Lagoon’ that will support the government’s strategy to strengthen the tourism sector. Building on its two decades of presence in the country, Gulf Craft will double its production capacity and focus on giving back to the community, said Gulf Craft Chairman Mohammed Hussein Alshaali.
19
One of the world’s premier boat and yacht manufacturers, Gulf Craft, is marking 20 years of its operation in the Maldives which has played a pivotal role in developing the marine transportation network of the island nation. With four generations of experience and pedigree that propelled the shipyard to its international standing, Gulf Craft’s growing portfolio features the ultra-luxury Majesty Yachts, the adventurous Nomad Yachts, and the Oryx sport cruisers. Gulf Craft provides almost 80% of the Maldives’s water transportation services which includes public transport, coast guard, emergency & ambulance services, resorts, and leisure boats. With a strong and established presence in the country, Gulf Craft is now developing a new production facility dedicated to the manufacturing of vessels for use in the Indian Ocean which will see its operations and production capacity double within 16 months.
20
In early 2021 the shipyard was awarded a government contract, through MTCC to manufacture a fleet of specially designed highquality speed boats for use across the Integrated National Public Ferry Network. The new speed boats will offer a convenient and efficient transportation system to all administrative islands of the Maldives, with capabilities to transport up to 53 passengers at a time and will connect the capital city to nearby islands. The vessels will be equipped with special packages for passengers travelling in emergency situations and will include access for stretchers and people with disabilities. The public transportation project is one of the largest government initiatives and will contribute to connecting the various islands of the Maldives upon completion.
21
Gulf Craft’s Chairman, Mohammed Hussein Alshaali, said:
“
The Government of the Maldives and its people have constantly been a beacon of support since the establishment of our operations without whom this remarkable feat would not be possible. We are grateful to the Maldives for entrusting Gulf Craft with projects that have played a part in the growth of the nation over these twenty years. The Maldives is our first international destination, where we have built incountry competencies by leveraging the opportunities that the country provides for the marine and tourism sector. With the expansion of our production capacity and the new training facility we hope to serve the local community even better through the creation of new job opportunities and in further boosting tourism.”
22
Gulf Craft Maldives launched its all-new SilverCat 34 Luxury in late 2020. The model was the first catamaran to the Gulf Craft Maldives’ production line which was a distinctive addition to the fleet of speedboats built by Gulf Craft Maldives. Additionally, the catamaran was the first solar-equipped speedboat, which runs all its equipment, including air conditioning, on solar power. This multi-purpose SilverCat 34 Luxury was built as a closed deck layout providing comfortable transportation. The inside and outside seating areas are generous, seating up to 14 guests. It also houses a dedicated washroom, fully equipped kitchenette, and an ample amount of storage spaces to welcome guests of high-end resorts and 5-star tourism industry stakeholders. The speedboat has attracted a lot of attention from tour operators and resort managers in the Maldives.
23
Specification of SilverCat 34 Luxury Gulf Craft established its operations in the Maldives with a 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility that has produced top-quality pleasure boats and rapid transport vessels. Gulf Craft is now focusing on further expansion of its operations in the Maldives to support the government’s strategy to strengthen the tourism sector. This will be driven by doubling its production capacity in the country and by giving back to the community through the new training facility for captains and crew. Last year Gulf Craft announced that it will invest in a

strategic development in the Maldives named ‘Gulf Lagoon’. The project will feature a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, a marina for seafarers and liveaboards, a maritime school offering captain/crew training for young Maldivians, and a resort, among others. Founded in the United Arab Emirates in 1982, Gulf Craft has over 1000 employees across its three facilities in the UAE and the Maldives and has a manufacturing capacity of 200 boats per year. The company has built more than 10,000 boats already, serving clients around the world. A work ethos of innovation with passion has been influential in making Gulf Craft as one of the top seven shipyards in the world, backed by a strong global network spanning Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Gulf Craft envisages success not as the reward for its innovation, but as a motivation to set out on a path of difference, with dedication and commitment, while creating ocean-going masterpieces that truly belong to the waters of the world. Gulf Craft’s manufacturing unit and marine service centre in the Maldives was the very first investment from the Middle East of its kind in the Asian marine industry, and has since grown immensely. 24
Braving the Blue with MOHAMED RAAIDH
Ahead of Maldives’ first international yacht rally to mark the 50th anniversary of the Maldivian tourism industry, we sat down for an exclusive interview with the man behind the ambitious project, Mohamed Raaidh, Managing Director of Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC). He kindly provided a journey of a mix that encapsulates everything about the “Savaadheetha Dhathuru” and MITDC is about.
“
I would like to see a generation of youth growing up in their native islands, where they will work and earn through these integrated tourism facilities and achieve economic freedom.”

was gazetted in December 2020 with these revisions and new additions.
What I noticed was the deficiency in developing tourism products for the mid-market segment. There is a huge demand for our luxury tourism. Private jets come to Maldives filled with VIPs & CIPs. However, it tells a different story when regular airlines fly to the Maldives with their first class and business class full, but with many empty seats in the economy class—the bulk of the carrier. And then, there is a significant income disparity gap within the Maldivian society too. These are reasons for fostering middle income earners, as well as mid-markets tourist facilities in Maldives. The government has a vision to close that gap, for which MITDC has a crucial role to play. The past two years of the pandemic was challenging. But I was very inspired by the leadership of the government and the bold decision to open up our

The aim of the organizers is to promote Maldivian culture & heritage, its rich history as well as nautical tourism and to exploit the benefits of strengthening these areas within the tourism industry of the country. 4) Speaking of Heritage Tourism, in 2019, the Maldives government asked World Monuments Fund (WMF) to assist in preparing a nomination file for submission to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for listing of the coral stone mosques of Maldives as a World Heritage site. What is your take on the constant efforts from Maldives to enter the permanent list of UNESCO’s World Heritage? This is a very important effort. It is very important that our rich heritage is recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. It was said by some historians that coral stone mosques, especially the ones that can be dismantled and assembled are only seen in the Maldives. Likewise, there is the UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve in Baa atoll in Maldives. 28

10. What precautionary measures have been taken by Luxury Yacht Maldives for a safe trip? Our vessels are EIFEC certified as per Health Emergency Risk Compliance Management System (HER-CMS) in epidemic context. Our onboard safety conditions are constantly screened and updated according to the rules and regulations of the Republic of Maldives. We apply very strict safety measures as per our approved and certified safety plans. For example, for boat cleaning and disinfecting procedures: • Boat is constantly washed with soap and water, especially in common areas where touch points can be multiple. • Boat is disinfected with diluted bleach solution 1 ml bleach to 9 ml water (keep for 10 minutes) • Boat is sanitized with an Ozone machine. No common rinsing tanks are used to rinse any piece of equipment, while stern showers are available for single use. Guests keep their own equipment in their individual basket, making sure no one else touches them except themselves. At the end of every safari, the crew 8. 9. How do you see the future of the Maldivian boating industry? What’s your advice for improvement? I believe that with the ever-high standards of cruising boats, this market will open up more and more to a demanding and sophisticated clientele. The preparation of the crew and the professionalism of all the staff both on board and in the organization will then be crucial. 46

The dive centre that I worked for offered SSI and PADI courses and required that all staff could teach SSI courses. The Lifeguard course, conducted by SSI Area Manager for the Maldives, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, and ex-paramedic Martin Langenberg, started with a grueling swim test of 400 meters. This was followed by an underwater swim of 15 meters, and a rescue approach swim of 50 meters, to make sure that the candidates are up to a swimming standard necessary to be able to save lives in the water. Upon passing the swim test, the Lifeguard course continued on with a combination of theoretical and practical training in and out of the water. This gave them the knowledge needed to recognize and respond to problems that can arise at the pool or beach. Once they had passed the requirements to become beach lifeguards, the additional training to bring them up to SSI Lifeguard Instructors began. Due to their current levels within the SSI system, this instructor training was a small step for them. They already have a very good knowledge of the SSI teaching philosophy - Comfort through repetition. “It is amazing that in a country made of islands and surrounded by water there was never a regulation to have lifeguards on duty, until now!” - Koen Zuurbier.
To allow for a wider range of inclusivity of candidates, SSI translated the SSI Lifeguard and SSI React Right (first aid & CPR, Oxygen provider & AED) courses into the Maldivian native language of Dhivehi. 54

With substantial support from the community, other NGOs, state institutions and the private sector, Save the Beach Maldives is able to conduct a host of events focusing on reducing the impact of waste and litter on the beach, reef and consequently, human health. Reflecting on STBM’s data over the ten years, the organization has removed an impressive 1000 tonnes of garbage through its various cleanups; with the waste data segregated into various forms of plastics, metals and general waste. As part of their waste management initiative, they also partnered with Muhyiddin School, situated in Villimale’, to carry out a school waste management pilot program with the help of Parley Maldives. By placing segregated bins in the school, the school acts as a collection point for plastic waste on the island. Approximately 30 jumbo bags worth of recyclables are collected and sent to Parley on a monthly basis.

#TAKEBACKYOURTRASHWITHYOU “Take Back your Trash with You’ is a joint campaign by the National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM) and Save the Beach Maldives, as a CSR initiative to clean publicly utilized sandbanks around the country. Beginning with its first cleanup in November 2020, the purpose of the project is to create further awareness on the steadily growing issue of public littering, especially the large amounts of waste left on sandbanks after having picnics or gatherings. The group of volunteers that participated in the first sandbank cleanup noted that waste was generally mixed between organic and inorganic matter, and that the organic waste had already begun decomposing on the sandbank. The collected waste was discovered to be infested with maggots and roaches, making it rather difficult to conduct the planned waste audit post cleanup. Despite such challenges, roughly 108 kilos of trash were successfully collected and delivered to appropriate waste collection services in Male’ City. Having kicked off the monthly initiative, Save the Beach will be announcing more trips scheduled with the help of the National Boating Association and guarantees equal opportunities for volunteers who wish to take part in the #takebackyourTRASHwithyou campaign. These trips could turn out to be an interesting way to experience a typical sandbank trip except you are actively experiencing the gross impact of our choices on the environment and all the forms of life we share this world with. According to volunteers, participating in these clean ups can make us reassess our collective choices and inspire us to pay attention to the well-being of surrounding ecosystems - which our well-being depends on.
