EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE HAWKS 27
FLOATING ASIA | SUMMER 2021
INTERVIEW - THE HAWKS TEAM
A far cry from its humble beginning, The Hawks Pvt Ltd is one of the leading importers and distributors of high-quality fuel in the Maldives. Staying true to their motto “Think Smart, Supply Fast”, the family-run company has developed an extensive product
portfolio with more than 14 years of experience; exceptional attention to the needs of
clients, revered customer service, and the ultimate satisfaction to its esteemed clients
across the nation. Having branched out into several related businesses as well as the tourism sector, The Hawks have become one of the most reputable and trustworthy fuel suppliers in the country under the guidance of Founder and Chairman Mr. Ahmed
Rasheed Hassan. In this comprehensive Group Interview The Hawks team gave us exclusive insights into their inspiring journey.
Please tell us how The Hawks Pvt Ltd – one of the leading 1 fuel suppliers in the Maldives – began its journey, and what’s the story behind its name? Just one fuel truck with a capacity of 5,000 litres. That is how we started our business back in 2007. Within one and a half years’ time, we controlled almost 80 per-cent of the fishing vessels’ market in the Maldives. We then focused on expanding our business portfolio and today, we are the second largest importers of fuel in Maldives, with the largest fleet; a total of 19 vessels operating just for fuel. We also own one of the largest fuel storage terminals with a capacity of 30 million litres. Now, our customer portfolio consists of all marine sectors in the Maldives including about 55% of the tourism industry. We have established our fuel-related services; our central storage facility and floating storages across Maldives; one in Baa Atoll with the capacity of 4 million litres, another 1.2 million litre storage in Dhaalu Atoll, and we are in the midst of mobilising an additional 1.2 million litre tanker in Huvadhoo as well. Currently, we deliver anywhere in the Maldives within 48 hours. By last quarter of 2021 we are hoping to cut down our delivery time to 24 hours. The Hawks has also gone beyond Maldivian borders, by supplying to Colombo, as well as international fishing operators in the Indian Ocean. We have other divisions such as our strong transportation fleet – 8 speedboats, 6 ferry boats. We provide boatyard services, a fuel terminal, mechanical workshops, plus a construction company for mega projects. We have also diversified into hotel industry with two boutique hotels, and we are building an additional city hotel in Baa Atoll set to open by the end of 2021. Our name “The Hawks” was inspired from the well-known music band “The Hawks Band”, formed and managed by our older brother, who performed in resorts and other events back in the 90’s with other members of the band. The creation of our brother was later evolved to
be the brand of our entire family business, The Hawks Pvt Ltd. The hawk in our logo represents family and courage. Over time, our logo and what we represent, evolved as well. Previously, it was just a sun with the hawk flying across the centre showing that golden globe, we operate only in daytime in the Maldives. Now, the sun has evolved into a golden globe. As it's always daytime somewhere in the world; meaning, showing that we now operate for 24 hours.
2
What are some of the key milestones you have achieved, to date? A huge milestone for us was the launching of our privately held, stateof-the-art fuel terminal. The entire terminal is fully automatic; discharging, loading, unloading – everything can be done with the touch of a button. We have one of the fastest terminals in the country in terms of loading and discharging – about 2 million litres per hour. Our fire-fighting system is very sophisticated and can be controlled from anywhere. Also, we are the only terminal in the country that owns Mass Floor Metres. These European-standard, internationally certified metres are extremely accurate with to-the-point readings. Some of the key challenges oil companies face are quantity issues, but these metres were created with such technology that guarantees the right quantity for suppliers and buyers. Additionally, we own and operate the largest oil fleet in the country. We also control a significant share of the resort market. We have a strong, reliable customer-base and uphold a good reputation with them. We believe this is a great milestone. Another significant achievement for us is that we have gone beyond Maldivian borders, as I mentioned earlier. Next year, some interesting projects are in the pipeline which I will not reveal just yet.
FLOATING ASIA | SUMMER 2021 28
The Hawks has seen an impressive growth with the increase in the number of professional services, supply vessels and 3 employees. What led to the diversification of your business portfolio from fuel supply to tourism and construction? Don't put all your eggs into one basket. Diversification is important for any business to ensure that risks are minimised. Your source of income should not be from just one area. That doesn't mean go beyond your control and get into every line of work. Control is very important; the minute you lose control of your business is the minute you fail. Majority of our diversification comes from related services; our transportation fleet, boatyards, the lathe and mechanical workshops – all created to support our core business. We created the lathe and mechanical workshop with one of the largest team of engineers, because we have up to 40 marine vessels. This way, we can control the pace of work. Same with our boatyard which was built for efficiency. We created our inhouse construction team, so that our buildings are of the best quality and standard – our fuel terminal was one of our biggest projects which was a 45-million-dollar project. In terms of tourism, “why tourism?”, you ask. Well, “why not tourism?” is what I would say. The reason a lot of businesses are limited in the Maldives is because the Maldivian market potential is quite small – about 400,000 people, more or less. But with tourism, we're talking about the world – billions. When you have a billion-people market potential, it makes sense for you to go into that area with the right tools.
Over the past 14 years, The Hawks has continued to evolve as a business, identifying market developments and adapting 4 to local and international trends. What are some of the challenges you have had to overcome during this time? Every single business goes through a myriad of challenges, and we've faced many. When we first started out, procurement was a huge challenge. In the Maldives, we have to rely heavily on importers, who are not very keen on supplying the small guys. They're usually interested in the big guys – which makes sense. We had to rely on the small guy to supply the even smaller guy – and we used to be that “smaller guy”. So, procuring fuel was the biggest challenge back then. Ensuring the quality of fuel entering the Maldives is another challenge. According to recent statistics, the entire country uses around 80 million litres a month; that's about 55 million litres of diesel, 5 to 6 million litres of petrol and 18 to 20 million litres of jet fuel. Populationwise that's a big number, but the Maldives doesn't have fuel testing laboratory services - we have to rely on the boat documents. Of course, we are blessed that the government is one of the largest importers of fuel, so they make sure the quality is not compromised. But when buying from a third or fourth party, we cannot ensure the
29
FLOATING ASIA | SUMMER 2021
quality. The Hawks no longer faces this issue as we are now direct importers; we know from where our product is being loaded and its quality. lMaldives is 99 per-cent water; you have customers all across the ocean, and you need a very strong fleet to ensure businesssustainability – especially in fuel. One of the reasons companies don't succeed in fuel is due to such infrastructural problems. Timely delivery of diesel is one of the biggest fears of resorts - almost every island here is generated by diesel. No diesel means no electricity. Thankfully, our chairman ensured a proper working infrastructure to support the efficiency of our business and we continue to build it even today. Having a bigger fleet can also be a challenge. It means more people to look after and more boats to maintain. Fuel is a sensitive product - it is expensive, so it is crucial to have a strong, well-trained team. Even with captains, you cannot have those who only stick around for a second. We are very proud that all our barge captains are hardworking Maldivians – it isn't easy to find the right people, and I believe our operations team does a wonderful job.
With over 400 employees of various nationalities at The 5 Hawks, how do you motivate and retain your staff in order to reduce employee turnover? At The Hawks, we practice an open-door policy. Our management team is very approachable for any level of staff. Also, according to our policy, annual appraisals and staff increments are to be carried out once every two years. However, if anyone performs exceptionally and exceeds our expectations, they would not have to wait two years. Promotions follow the same guidelines. We also try to bring everyone together whenever we get the chance to celebrate birthdays, company anniversaries, as well as achievements. We make sure they know that every achievement is only possible because of them. Another aspect is flexibility. Many individuals wish to continue their studies while working, which we encourage and support. If they wish to use the office to study after work hours, they have the freedom to do so. They can even use the boardroom if it is available. If they have exams during work hours, we never consider them absent. We also understand that there can always be emergencies such as waiting for a babysitter or various commitments and appointments - employees keep us informed and we do not fine them for being late. At The Hawks, we are more focused on the getting the job done in a stressfree environment. Above all, every employee is attended to with care by the whole HR team. If they have any concerns or personal issues they wish to address, they can consult with us and we try to guide them however we can. They know they can trust us, and everything is kept confidential. We are available 24/7.
INTERVIEW - THE HAWKS TEAM

The year 2020 has been very challenging for all businesses 6 globally. How do you foresee the recovery of your ROI in the coming years? Fuel is one of the most consumed commercial products – both, in value and volume – used by every resort, factory and company across the islands. These businesses are the key drivers of the country's economy and GDP. Thus, fuel is a most promising sector to rebound early, as the economy starts recovering. Now, with the favourable vaccine news, the market confidence is expected to lift better than before, which will allow us to access our customers again and resume our services back to pre-COVID volumes soon. We expect to recover back to our previous volumes a year from now – the point at which we will start building our ROI. As far as the future is concerned, the company has made large investments to lift its capacity on shore, as well as its fleet, in order to support operations. With its existing capacity and positive further market prospects we see more opportunities to increase our sales volume as well as to improve the ROI.

What are the key opportunities for the country’s youth in terms of employment and training at your company? We had actually been running internship programmes just until April 2020 year, when the lockdown took place. We look forward to restarting the programme once the situation settles more. We also offer placement opportunities for youngsters. They do not require a specific amount of experience – we will train them. When they apply, we give them the chance, and if we are impressed in the interview, we give them the job. We believe that everybody has to start somewhere. impressed in the interview, we give them the job. We believe that everybody has to start somewhere.
We also provide apprenticeship programmes. We provide schoolleavers with the opportunity to experience real-time work with each department; few days in HR, finance, operations, marketing and more. This is a great way to figure out your career path.

What are some of the CSR activities initiated by The Hawks? We are from Baa Atoll, Kamadhoo and we also have a sub-storage over there. Due to lack of maintenance, the Kamadhoo jetty fell apart. The community faced much difficulty due to this and of course, people were unhappy. So, we actually re-did the entire jetty by ourselves, using only Hawks funds. You see, in the capital, you have a lot of opportunities and activities, but these faraway islands, there isn't as much. So, we're always keen to find out if there is a futsal tournament, a Quran challenge, or any such activities that we can support in local islands. CSR activities are something that we at The Hawks carry out with our hearts. Many times, it is very personal and not done for publicity. Of course, we display our logo when sponsoring certain events or supporting certain causes, but there are many activities and causes we have supported that I do not wish to list out. You may call it CSR, but for us, it has a deeper meaning. If it's something that will improve the standards of the living, give opportunities for youth, and improve the country's economy, we'll be part of it.

What strategies have been put in place with regards to environmental sustainability? At the end of the day, everyone knows that fuel has its effects on the environment. But it is also a product that we humans cannot live without. Most of the world is run by various types of oil and gas. So, one of the initiatives we have taken is to make sure our products are lower in sulphur. The IMO regulation states that fuel must not contain higher than 0.5 sulphur (5000ppm), but the products we import have always had 0.05 sulphur (500ppm). If the sulphur content is too high, it will end up damaging the ozone layer significantly. Since 2019, we have also started importing an even lower 0.001 sulphur (10ppm), which is the lowest sulphur content you can find. It is called AGO – Automobile Gas Oil. For most countries in Europe, it is a requirement to use AGO in vehicles due to its super-low sulphur content - they tend to have very high standards when it comes to minimising the effects on the environment, and it's something that we wanted to start over here as well. It is an expensive oil, but we are thrilled that many of the resorts are keen on purchasing it. Another thing is, we carry oil across the ocean. Any amount of oil spillage will be harmful to marine life. So, in order to really ensure that our team knows how to avoid oil spillages and what to do in case of any such incidents, we have regular trainings every 6 months – sometimes every 3 months. We take utmost precaution to ensure that such spillages are avoided, and in case it happens, we have all the necessary tools and skills onboard every single barge to sort it out immediately. So far, we have not faced such incidences and hopefully never will.

Do you have any words of wisdom for the people that are inspired to join this industry? For business owners, you have to be the first person to enter the office, and the last person to leave – not your staff. You have to give your 200% to every single aspect of your business. Meaning, when you sleep and eat, when you're with your friends and family, the thought of your business must always be present. That's how you know you're very committed. Honesty in business is very crucial. The minute you start to lie to yourself is the minute your foundation will start to rust, crack and eventually, burst. When doing business your word has to be your first contract. It's not just the paper you sign. If you give someone a commitment, you have to make sure to honour it. The oil and gas industry is tough; you need to have a lot of strength to overcome the basic small challenges and you must have absolute control over your businesses. Otherwise, you will not be able to sustain it. If you fail, identify the problem and try again. Never forget your roots no matter how successful you become, always remember who you are and where you come from.

Cruising around the deep blue waters of Maldives is the best way to explore the colorful rich marine life and exquisite islands the Maldives offer. Visiting various dive sites and indulging in activities such as snorkeling, diving and game fishing have become an experience that no locals or tourist visitors would want to miss. For this reason, the boating industry have become a striving industry in the Maldives making it evident that the boatyards play a crucial role for the industry to advance. Boats that are frequently used can cause wear and tear which would require servicing and maintenance of the engines, electronics and other equipment used in these boats. Boat maintenance is not an easy process that can be done by an individual, it is a costly process that every boat owner has to bear for the safety and security of the staffs as well as the passengers. Boatyard fees, labor cost and insurance charges are not an insignificant expense. Hence, the wise decision would always be to have the ownership for smooth sailing. Gulhi Boatyard and slipways have been in the boat maintenance industry for over 20 years with substantial experience. It is a family owned business who spent most of the time on repairing and enjoying the boat rides who then decided to save a penny by having their own boatyard and slipways for smooth operations. Today, Beach Investment Private Limited owns and operate a fishing vessel, a passenger boat, two safari boats, two diving dhoanis and a small ferry boat. The company has recently ventured into maintenance services and boat repair. Beach Investment and K. Gulhi Island Council has successfully taken over the island’s boat yard and slipway. FLOATING ASIA | SUMMER 2021
INTERVIEW - JEAN-CLAUDE MONACHON
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
JEAN-CLAUDE MONACHON Vice-President International Business Development, Sales & Marketing
1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO SSI? HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN? After leaving the 9-5 world in 1986, I moved to the Maldives. It was my first real diving experience outside of a pool or a cold lake environment. Seeing this underwater world and the islands was fulfilling a dream of changing something in my life. I was hooked, I remember this magic moment when I decide to go “all-in”. Quit my job, sold everything, and kept only 50 kilos of necessary belongings to follow my dream. Following my passion, I climbed the stairs of success in the diving industry. Never left the Maldives out of my heart, however, diving gave me the possibility to visit the World and meet people from so many different cultures. In 2013, the organization I was employed for, decide to change course and shut down several offices in Europe. I was in charge of laying off over 70 people, close friends, people that shared the same passion than me. So I decided to quit as well and was even thinking of starting my personal business in the Maldives. That's when I had an opportunity to make a presentation about the diving industry in front of a large Mares Distributors group. Knowing the people in charge of SSI and Mares since years because the industry is small, I listen carefully to their vision. It came out that the vision was following mine and that's when I decided to join SSI with the aim of helping positioning the organization internationally with a new evolution, namely the digitalization of the education. Also the fact that SSI is close to the field was matching my approach. I am a field person and being close to the market gives you all the knowledge and needs that the market would have helping developing new courses or simply constantly improving.
2. FROM WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION IN THE DIVING INDUSTRY AND AS A PROFESSIONAL DIVER?
When you visit countries around the world, see different needs, talk to the pros and dive center owners but also resort operators, you start to understand where you can improve, add or modify the educational program. I do not see every person as a scuba diver, however, when a person enters the water, potentially this person can enjoy snorkeling or freediving and ultimately become a scuba diver. Our strength is that we can listen to the market needs and add more to bring business to our centers. That's what I also call freedom.
3. HOW MANY DIVE LOCATIONS HAVE YOU VISITED AROUND THE
WORLD AND WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT? WHAT IS THE NEXT STOP ON YOUR DIVE BUCKET LIST?
My profession opened me so many doors, as an avid traveler, I enjoy every minute I can be flying to a destination where I will meet local people and new dive spots of course. Sometimes, I don't have the time to dive, but if I can, I dive everywhere. From a river, lake to the ocean. I don't count the number of locations but the list of the ones I would like to visit is still long. My bucket list: the south of the Maldives where I have never been, Cocos, Galapagos, Raja Ampat. My favorite destination, you probably understood that the Maldives is my second country in heart.
It is a decision I never regretted.

4. AS SSI CELEBRATES THE 50 YEARS OF ANNIVERSARY, WHAT ARE YOUR STRATEGIC PLANS / VISION FOR THE UPCOMING YEARS?
SSI's vision was to be the largest training center organization and rely on real structures to provide an ultimate experience to the people. SSI also started the vision of being digital 7 years ago and it has proven to be an extremely powerful asset in pandemic times. This evolution will continue. With SSI, we will also make sure that we continuously improve with new courses answering the market demand. One of the biggest example was the creation of the Mermaid course, when I brought this idea, people where smiling or even neglecting it, because the message behind that was not understood. The mermaids are the ambassadors of the sea, it's powerful and obviously brings more people closer to the water activities and the environment. SSI will also continue to have quality and accessibility at place number one in any development. My vision for the upcoming years are already confirmed. Diving has never followed trends. Every country coming out of the pandemic shows a massive uptake in scuba and freediving activities. People had enough of being locked down, they want to enjoy life, discover new things, be closer to nature or simply get an adrenaline shot. This will boost the industry for sure. Also on the professional side, many people will continue to leave their 9-5 life and start a new career seeking more freedom and we can offer that.
55
FLOATING ASIA | SUMMER 2021
5. WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE WORLD OCEAN DAY? A large international campaign has been supported by SSI. But also the fact that we are “live” underwater planting corals in China is a fantastic event. Thousands of people are following us at the minute I am giving this interview. Also our aim is to continue to bring new environmental programs to the public. With our Blue Oceans structure, fully financed by SSI, Mares and the Head Group, we offer free programs to both divers and training centers to further ocean conservation. I encourage everyone to check our website on that subject.
6. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE IN THIS INDUSTRY AND HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THEM?
The first and biggest challenge is the opportunity to travel freely again. This brings a lot of unknowns in the sector and certainly our support will be needed here. Therefore we have been running over 350 virtual seminars over the past 18 months to prepare our professionals and training centers for this situation. The digital approach is changing the way centers have to position themselves while using the power of social media. So this is definitely something new for them. When I started diving, travel was not the preferred way to engage in diving (freediving or scuba diving), so diving locally was highly positioned and this was lost over the past years. Today people are discovering that they can dive locally and this becomes again an activity they can do outside of their holiday time.
INTERVIEW - JEAN-CLAUDE MONACHON
7. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PROUDEST MOMENTS IN THE SPHERE OF DIVING?
The very best moment is when you teach your first open water scuba diver and you see this smile in the face of person that gives you a great recommendation because you did a good job. This I will never forget. Then of course, having successfully helped positioning several programs, sometimes overcoming a lot of objections and ultimately being able to make a change, makes me very proud. I received several awards and this of course makes me proud because it shows that you can make a difference by still being yourself. But most of all, I would say that I am very proud to meet people around the world and they come and shake my hand and we have a chat together. So they know me and are happy to talk to me, this is the best moment of course to realize that you could leave a little trace.
8. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE UNDERWATER CREATURE TO OBSERVE, AND WHAT SORT OF CHANGES IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT HAVE YOU SEEN OVER THE YEARS?
Without any doubt, sharks in all their forms. I am fascinated by them and I am a strong advocate of protecting them.
Of course I did see changes over the years but I have also seen an adaptation of nature in many ways. Nature is stronger than us! Surely, the divers cannot be blamed for the damages under the surface, there is such a high level of consciousness in our community. The damages are coming from pollution and other disasters. The divers are always the first ones to actively protect the oceans.
9. FLOATING ASIA HOPES TO HIGHLIGHT SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS
PRACTICES AND CONSERVATION PROJECTS IN ORDER TO ENCOURAGE OUR GUESTS TO LOOK AT HOW THEY TRAVEL AND WHAT THEY CAN DO TO CONSERVE THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT. AS A PROFESSIONAL DIVER, DO YOU THINK DIVE TOURISM HAS A ROLE IN CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM?
I applaud Floating Asia for their initiatives and yes I am fully convinced that dive tourism plays a very important role in conservation and sustainability. When scuba divers can influence fishermen to change their businesses, it helps. When divers are explaining and sharing their emotions, pictures, videos, to non-divers, people start to realize that every simple step that can be taken in protecting the marine environment (also in rivers and lakes) are critically important. Here too, I see divers as ambassadors of the sea.
10. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR KEY ADVICE TO THE MILLENNIALS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN CHOOSING DIVING AS A PROFESSION?
Passion and communication are the first words coming to my mind. If you are introvert, this job will help you finding contact with the world talking about things that are common. It will help you breaking the barriers of languages, cultures and age. You'll be able to position yourself as an authority and well respected person if you do your job with enthusiasm and enjoy every minute with students, divers or anybody aligning with you. If you are willing to spend every minute on your mobile phone and not talking to people, you are not a good fit for this industry. If you think that you can just take it easy and not take any responsibility, it's not for you. You will learn to take responsibility, face various situations, sometimes critical, and you'll learn so many skills that you will be able to apply in other fields too. The Diving Professional job is one of the most multi-faceted you can have: learning, teaching, communicating, social media relevant and more…

ABOUT THE OLIVE RIDLEY PROJECT The Olive Ridley Project (ORP) was established in 2013, and is a registered charity in the UK (Reg. No. 1165905). ORP have three main charitable objectives:
1
To promote the benefit of public conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of the Indian Ocean in particular, but not exclusively by: a) the removal of ghost gear from the marine environment reducing the negative effects on coastal communities and marine animals particularly the Olive Ridley sea turtle, and b) by promoting the recycling of end of life fishing nets.
2

To advance the education of the public in conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of the marine sea turtle, in particular, but not exclusively the Olive Ridley sea turtle by the provision of talks, workshops, training and research.
FLOATING ASIA | SUMMER 2021
3
To promote human behaviour towards the Olive Ridley sea turtle by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for animals which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage and to educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among animals. N.B. Although ORP strives to achieve all three objectives you will be predominantly working towards charitable objective 3.
FEATURE - OLIVE RIDLEY PROJECT
THE PROBLEM In the last ten years, over 900 sea turtles have been reported entangled in ghost gear (abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear) in the Maldives. The majority of these entangled turtles were olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea); however, green (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) have also been reported. Local fishers, marine biologists, recreational divers, and tourists have all rescued entangled turtles, but many are not so lucky and likely float by unnoticed. Some suffer injuries so severe they are unable to recover without rehabilitation. However, there is hope! The Olive Ridley Project (ORP) opened its first Marine Turtle Rescue Centre in February 2017 with a mission to provide the best medical treatment to all entangled and injured turtles in the Maldives. Transporting injured turtles between atolls and islands have been challenging, but thanks to the relationships the team have built with the resorts to coordinate a speedy delivery for the turtles in need of care. Recently, an exciting collaboration partnership was agreed between ORP and Trans Maldivian Airline (TMA) to provide a platform to transport injured turtles to their centre via sea planes. They strive to create greater awareness of their centre among local fishermen, resort staff, and the general public so that more turtles can be safely brought to them.
FACTS > More than 10 tons of ghost gear removed from the Indian ocean > 1001 entangled turtles reported in the Maldives > 147 injured turtles treated at the Marine Turtle Rescue Centre > 76 turtles successfully released > 65.5% victims of ghost net, plastic, or marine debris entanglement > 4,800 sea turtles identified in the Indian Ocean
ORP is on a mission to protect sea turtles and their habitats through rescue and rehabilitation, education outreach, and scientific research.

ORP RESEARCH PROJECTS Under the guidance of the Olive Ridley Project several scientific research projects are currently being undertaken with which you can assist our researchers. The first uses the data provided by recovered ghost nets. This is a citizen science project and relies upon those who find ghost gear to input the details of the nets and any turtles entangled on their website. This invaluable information allows us to begin to assess and determine the origin of the nets. ORP can then target those fisheries or geographic areas that are responsible for abandoning or losing fishing gear and provide education to further their understanding on the negative impacts that these nets are having on our oceans. Furthermore, they can determine which net characteristics increase the probability of turtle entanglement and allow policy makers and net manufactures on net design. As a team member you will be inputting data when you find ghost nets on local beaches or while snorkelling. ORP CEO, Dr. Martin Stelfox, recently completed his PhD at the University of Derby in the UK. His research focused on the impact of ghost gear in the Maldives. He was able to identify drift patterns of ghost gear and used this information alongside statistical modeling to identify which fisheries are most problematic in the region. This helps guide ORP to be better informed when dealing with the issue. Another part of Martin's research tried to identify to which population entangled olive ridleys found in the Maldives belong. By comparing DNA samples of entangled olive ridleys rescued in the Maldives to neighbouring populations in India, Oman, Sri Lanka, Reunion Island, and Madagascar, Martin was able to pinpoint that these turtles are coming from eastern India and Sri Lanka. Sea turtles that comes to the centre may have a small amount of

tissue removed and for genetic analyses as part of a research project into sea turtle population dynamics in the Indian Ocean. You will assist the veterinarian with sampling and learn correct sampling techniques. Another area of ORP research is photographic identification (or photo-id) of foraging and nesting turtles. ORP have a database of over 25,400 sightings of 4,000+ identified individuals where they collaborate with marine biologists, dive professionals and tourists all over the Maldives. The goal of this work is to recognize residency patterns, determine population trends over long time scales, and recognize environmental “hot spots” that could warrant additional legislative protection. ORP has helped to organize two photo-ID workshops in association with the International Sea Turtle Symposium. They are working with an international group of turtle photo-ID experts to develop a groundbreaking photo-ID software and “The Internet of Turtles”, which will provide a unique set of open source software for monitoring and analysing sea turtle populations around the world. As part of the team you will be trained on photo-id and contribute data whenever you observe sea turtles. In the past, ORP has produced technical reports for the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, abstracts, presentations and posters at the International Sea Turtle Symposium, and published research in scientific journals. ORP staff sit on two working groups of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative. [www.ghostgear.org]
FEATURE - OLIVE RIDLEY PROJECT
COMMUNITY-BASED EDUCATION It is the intention of the Olive Ridley Project to provide education to the young generation of Maldivians, to increase their understanding of the incredible oceans that surround them. The centre will be involved with schools on the nearby local islands, Hithadhoo and Thulhaadhoo, and in the future, will provide a scientific syllabus relating to the animals that can be found in the Maldives. The course will specifically focus on endangered animals, such as the sea turtles, and how best they can protect them for future generations.
