WHALE SHARKS ARTICLE

Swimming with the giants QUICK FACT One of the most beautiful and loved fish in the ocean is the Whale Shark. We have seen it often in marine conservation campaigns, as it is an endangered species and a must see for many divers and ocean lovers around the globe.

Whale sharks are the largest non-cetacean animals in the world. The average size of an adult Whale Shark is about 9.7 metres and its average weight is 9 tonnes. Even though it belongs to the shark family, they feed mainly on plankton, as it is a filter feeder fish. It has five large pairs of gills and its wide mouth can measure up to 1.5 metres wide, contains 10 filter pads and between 300-350 rows of tiny teeth. Its eyes are located on the front flat head. The body is mostly grey coloured with a white belly. There are three prominent ridges, which run along each side of the animal and the skin is marked with a checker board of pale yellow spots and stripes. These spots are unique to each individual and are often used for counting populations.

Whale Sharks are found in tropical and warm oceans and live in the open sea. They are capable of diving to depths of at least 1,286 metres (4,219 ft), and are a migratory species. With a lifespan of about 70-100 years, they are known to migrate every spring. Coral spawning provides Whale Sharks with an abundant supply of plankton, creating feeding grounds in several areas around the globe. Its range is generally restricted to about ¹30° latitude.

Despite its size, the Whale Shark does not pose significant danger to humans. Their gentle nature makes swimming with them a special treat for divers and snorkellers. They are remarkably gentle and curious and usually encounters while snorkelling or diving tend to be friendly and even playful at times. The best policy when diving with Whale Sharks is a passive interaction.

Whale Sharks can be seen by divers and snorkellers in many places, some of the most popular are following: In the Caribbean sea just off Holbox island in Mexico, from June until August, the world’s largest population of Whale Sharks congregate to feed on the plankton in the area's rich waters. Many fishermen become tour guides for the snorkelling Whale Shark season. Unfortunately diving is not allowed. Isla Mujeres also offers snorkelling encounters with the big pelagic from June until September. The Whale Shark season in Belize starts in April until June, which allows divers to observe these majestic animals at the Gladden Spit Area, off Dangriga city. Mutton and Cuberra snapper spawn here every year during the full moon and the giant Whale Sharks come to feed on the spawn and to mate.

The planet's largest fish is on the verge of extinction and it has been listed as a 'Vulnerable' species by The World Conservation Union 45

Environmentalists do tagging of the Whale Shark under a programme in Seychelles to help identify and tag this species

The Bay Islands in Honduras, in particular Utila, are known as The Whale Shark Capital of the Caribbean. You can enjoy the presence of Whale Sharks from the end of January until April, and from October until December. In the Pacific ocean, the UNESCO World Heritage islands of Cocos Island (Costa Rica), Coiba Island (Panama), Malpelo (Colombia) and Galapagos (Equator) are part of the Biological Marine Corridor of the Tropical Eastern Pacific, attracting an overwhelming marine biodiversity typically known as Top World destinations for sharks, Giant Mantas, whales and occasionally Whale Shark encounters from May till August, in a healthy coral environment.

The Red Sea also offers encounters with Whale Sharks, more commonly in the north but occasionally in the south as well, from the end of May till the end of July. You can see Whale Sharks off the eastern coast of Africa, off the Kenya coast from November until January. In the islands of Tanzania (Mafia, Pemba, Zanzibar) from October until March. The area of Inhambane and Tofo, in Mozambique, is famous for Mantas and Whale Shark sightings. The season starts from October through to May. Whale Sharks often frequent the reefs of the beautiful island of Nosy Be in Madagascar and in Sodwana Bay, located in the

Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park in South Africa, you can enjoy encounters with this great pelagic all year round.

Environmentalists do tagging of the Whale Shark under a programme in Seychelles to help identify and tag this species. Alternatively tourists will be able to snorkel with them on an organised snorkel trip with the Underwater Centre, in collaboration with the MCSS, a centre studying whale shark behaviour. The best season to encounter them is from August until October.

The Maldives is a great location for Whale Shark sightings. Historically they were only to be seen during the south-west monsoon season, but now due to several changes in the environment Whale Sharks can be found swimming around the atolls throughout the whole year. If you are aiming to see them on your holidays, we recommend you to follow the monsoons: in the drier north-west monsoon season (May - December), Whale Sharks are generally seen around the islands on the western side of the Maldives; whereas during the rainy south-east monsoon season (December - April), the best whale shark spotting opportunities are around the eastern side of the Maldives. Best atolls to see them are Ari and Baa Atoll.

46

In the Philippines, Whale Shark encounters happen in the nearby seas of the south-eastern part of Luzon, popularly in the village of Donsol

There are often encounters in Koh Tao, located in the gulf of Thailand, from March till May and September and October and occasionally in the Andaman coast, in Richelieu Rock, Surin Islands and Hin Daeng in Koh Lanta.

In the Philippines, Whale Shark encounters happen in the nearby seas of the south-eastern part of Luzon, popularly in the village of Donsol. December and January are the peak months, when warm streams bring plankton close to the shore. Whale Shark spotters and fishermen from the area will offer their services to the tourists and will give you a good chance to see and meet the whale sharks. However, spotters are still no guarantee.

47

Ningaloo Reef, in Western Australia is one of the few easily accessible places in the world where these giants appear in large numbers at predictable times of the year, from mid-March to mid-May. Also belonging to Australia, the beautiful Christmas Island offers large numbers of Whale Sharks from November through to April.

Unfortunately, the planet's largest fish is on the verge of extinction and it has been listed as a 'Vulnerable' species by The World Conservation Union. A number of non-profit organisations keep campaigning tirelessly to protect the world's largest fish from overexploitation and the very real threat of extinction. As for etiquette when diving with whale sharks, non intrusion and avoiding touching is the best policy.

Made for the Sapphire Sea. COVER STORY

Maldives, the archipelago of more than thousands of tiny islands, scattered heavenly across the Indian Ocean, reminiscent the poetic description with which the islands are profoundly titled in Sinhala, Maala Divaina, the ‘Necklace Islands’. 99% percent of this island nation is water, and the best of Maldives starts one meter beneath those shades of blue water. Complementing with this profound display of nature, Ocean Sapphire brings the Indian Ocean feast to one table, served hot under the tropical sun, while you sail from one atoll to the other, enjoying the luxury of this destination reef by reef. Ocean Sapphire is a new spacious luxury yacht. Designed locally, and built in the Maldivian Island of Velidhoo, this yacht carries the resemblance of Maldivian boat building techniques and design, fused with sleek modern architecture and polished off with rustic wooden interior. Nearly two years was spent for the building of this majestic vessel, and it has been two and half years since the operations began as an ocean cruiser.

48

Standing three decks tall, Ocean Sapphire is packed with space, lots of space. Seven cozy cabins are spotted on the lower deck, adequate with enough room to customize the cabins into double or family rooms. Luxury is redefined on the upper deck that shelves four large elegant rooms, each with double bed and bathtub, complemented with customized wooden furniture and glass windows framing the exquisite scenery of the Indian Ocean on the polished pine walls. The natural teak and pine décor of cabins and rooms create a beautiful contrast against the white polished fiber frames of the yacht, a sleek fusion of modern and natural interior. Meals are served on the main deck, where the restaurant is stretched with large wooden dining tables. The main deck also serves as Sala, spacious and furnished with tailor made sofas and coffee tables on the open deck. The top deck is studded with sunbeds and showers with open space creating a play ground for guests to dip in a sun bath or indulge in a throwback under a starry sky. Needless to say, most of these features are echoed in many top notch cruisers that sail through Maldivian atolls. “What stands us out from the rest is the standard of service that we strive to achieve” explains Ali Firaq, Managing Director of Intour Maldives. “We can build top notch luxury yachts, but at the end of the day its service that counts”

49

Ocean Sapphire is a sister property of Intour Maldives, one of the leading and renowned travel companies of Maldives, founded 18 years back. Firaq, one of the pioneer travel entrepreneurs who penetrated into markets like Russia, jotted the blue prints for ocean sapphire as a joint investment with a friend, from whom he later bought the full ownership. He speaks with great enthusiasm, about the standards that he wants Ocean Sapphire to attain. “it’s the kind of segment where everybody says their yacht is luxury, its very difficult to say” Firaq explained. “ I would say Ocean Sapphire is one best yachts out there” Ocean sapphire is built for the ocean. It offers, not only the luxury comfort of cruising through isles of Indian Ocean, but it also is equipped to best plate the experience of exploring the world under these beautiful waters. When it comes to ocean cruising in Maldivian waters, it’s the fantacy of every traveler to dive into endless swaths of coral reefs that these islands have to offer. Ocean Sapphire is built and operated with great care to ensure that the guests have that outof-dream underwater safari that they embarked on for. Diving center on board Ocean Sapphire is equipped with BAUER Mariner compressors, aluminum air tanks, and dive gears from most reputed trademarks. The dive vessel is designed and built to complement with the Mother Ship itself. Generously spaced, this vessel

"

50

is fully equipped for diving purposes, promising a comfortable ride to and from sites where Ocean sapphire cannot reach. But it’s not just the boat itself, elaborates, Firaq. “Our dive dhoani is the most spacious, comfortable, and with highest in safety standards, compared to any other vessesl out there”. As Firaq tried to explain, there some very interesting features to this yacht that makes it exquisite, small things that make big differences. Like private climate control and individual light controls in cabins and rooms, the Jacuzzi on the top deck to which six people can comfortably fit in, the convertible Karaoke lounge in the main deck, and the spa treatments, that tops the cake. Selection of spa treatments are available onboard, dive gears, water sports activities are arranged at the request of the guests. When asked what is most unique and important feature of Ocean Saphire, Mr. Firag pushed aside the luxuries he has to offer on the yacht. “I think the most important thing is we have a proper emergency rescue plan” He explained. “we have had unfortunate incidents in the past, and I believe it should be a standard for liveaboards to have crew trained for emergency situations. What we have done, is our crew is extensively trained before the voyage, with the help of coat guard. It’s the safety that counts”

50 YEARS WITH ALIA ARTICLE

While Maldives celebrates the Golden Jubilee of Independence in 2015, one Maldivian company, a year older than the republic, marks its 50th Anniversary as one of the oldest and most progressive private business establishments.

Ali Abudulla. Though it maybe a family business, the operations are carried out in a professional corporate environment under good governance principles with oversight by a Board of Directors. “Today Alia is very much corporatized and we have a divisional hierarchical structure, where each and every person has a specific area of focus” Alau Ali, the Managing Director of Alia Investments explained.

Of Many things that ALIA stands, the most important is the name itself. The title of the company is derived from the founders’ name Ali Abdulla, who, in 1964, with the opening of ALIA carpentry, laid the foundations for what would later become a successful business establishment that also played an important role in post-independence development of the country. The history of ALIA narrates a humble beginning. Under Ali Abdulla’s visionary foresight, a business endeavor, which began with trading of coconut timber and dried fish from islands, became a pioneer in transforming some of the most lucrative business industries in Maldives. Especially the construction industry is in debt of gratitude for some of the endeavors that Ali Abdulla exploited in the face of much scrutiny and criticism. Apart from being one the first Maldivian construction company to undertake resort development projects, ALIA was the first to build multi-story building in the Maldives. With establishment of Alia Store they were also among the first to import timber and hardware. In 1974 for the first time in the history of construction in Maldives, concrete was used to open the first tourist hotel in Male’, appropriately named ‘Hotel Alia’.

The list of ALIA’s milestones is long, but one of the most significant of them all is their 40 year old cooperate partnership with Yamaha Motor Company of Japan. In 1974, Alia introduced YAMAHA outboard engines to Maldives for the first time, initiating a revolutionary footstep in the high speed sea transportation industry of Maldives. Since then this cooperate partnership has grown immensely, and as the sole distributor, Alia has expanded its line of YAMAHA products from Outboard engines to Motorcycles, Water Vehicles and Golf cars. Today, ALIA provides full scale after service to YAMAHA products, and some of the products are even customized for Maldivian market. “Over the years we have built a very close relationship (with YAMAHA), sometimes beyond conventional business” Alau elaborated on the partnership with YAMAHA. “You can almost say its another branch, where Alia starts and YAMAHA begins is blurred, because we working towards one goal. This kind of partnership is rare anywhere in the world”.

Apart from his business exploitations, Ali Abdulla served a long career in public service until his retirement in 2000 and returning back to the private sector. It was during this period that ALIA was restructured to form the two distinct entities Alia Construction Pvt Ltd and Alia Investments Pvt Ltd. Today his two sons, Atho Ali and Alau Ali, are at the helm of the two business entities that still holds the founding values of

Apart from distributing the wide range of YAMAHA products, ALIA has also made significant investments in building facilities and infrastructure for their

"In 1974, Alia introduced YAMAHA outboard engines to Maldives for the first time, initiating a revolutionary footstep in the high speed sea transportation industry of Maldives" renowned after sales services. The extent to which Alia is invested on this partnership is that, according to Alau, “Alia Building”, the corporate head office building, is itself designed for YAMAHA business in mind and at times, even urgent spare part are flown airfreight, regardless of the cost, just to ensure that the requirements of their valuable clients are met on time. “We no longer see delivering YAHAMA products simply as a business, We now see it as a service for our customers” Alau stated. Alia’s YAMAHA after sales service center is well designed and equipped to deliver every demand from their clients. Staff at the service center are professionally trained and periodically updated at YAMAHA facilities in Japan and Indonesia, making Alia one of the best YAMAHA facilities in the region. Apart from YAMAHA, Alia investments is the distributor of Kohler bathroom and kitchen products, and imports a variety of timber products, steel, and hardware materials typically used for local construction, The future of ALIA promises to be bright with the second-generation managers following their father’s footsteps. According to Alau, ALIA now intends to exploit the opportunities abroad, by Launching ALIA as an international venture.

DIVE OCEAN

A NEW WAVE OF MARINE STUDIES ARTICLE

Generating Ocean Warriors Hussain ‘Sendi’ Rasheed is a man driven to succeed. He is the Maldives’ only PADI course director, the Executive Director of diveOceanus (one of the largest multi-centre dive operations in the country), an esteemed underwater photographer and a tireless advocate for the protection of marine wildlife. Over the course of his diving career, he has trained over five hundred PADI instructors, spearheaded several successful environmental campaigns and masterminded world record dives. Along the way, Sendi founded the country’s first Institute of Water Sports and Hospitality and saw it blossom to become the founding faculty of the Maldives’ largest private education provider, Villa College. One might be forgiven for assuming that (having just turned fifty) Sendi is now content with his accomplishments and is beginning to contemplate hanging up his fins. Forgiven but sorely mistaken! Life for Sendi is far from slowing down. His diverse achievements are now converging to provide the platform for his most elaborate goal to date. His objective? To equip a new generation of certified PADI instructors with the skills needed to become not only leaders in the field of recreational diving tourism but also trailblazers in ecological advocacy.

62

“If we are to provide complete protection for the endangered species in the Maldives, it is of utmost importance that the future generations are educated in marine science and more than that"

Hussain ‘Sendi’ Rasheed is a man driven to succeed. He is the Maldives’ only PADI course director, the Executive Director of diveOceanus (one of the largest multicentre dive operations in the country), an esteemed underwater photographer and a tireless advocate for the protection of marine wildlife.

The key, Sendi believes, is to provide students with PADI training alongside additional education in marine science and research skills. Now under the direction of Sham’aa ‘Anna’ Hameed, Villa College’s Faculty of Marine Studies (as the institute is now known) is well on track to realise this vision through its innovative new courses. As well as multiple PADI Instructor Development courses that run throughout the year, the faculty now offers courses in marine science (Certificate Three and Advanced Certificate) that have been designed and written with this objective in mind. The courses offer three pathways: water sports, diving and marine conservation. Depending on the chosen elective, students cover modules in marine biology, professional skills, English and maths. The diving pathway offers PADI certifications as course credit whilst the water sports pathway offers students the chance to get VDWS water sports licenses. All students will also complete Emergency First Response training and Surf Life Saving Australia components, which are internationally recognised. These unique courses amalgamate inwater and academic competencies and in doing so provide students with the tools to become innovators in the field of marine studies. Sendi and Anna believe the ripple effect will result in an increase of environmentally conscious tourists, more empowered local dive and water sports professionals and the emergence of a new phase of homegrown marine conservation research. When I catch up with Sendi to find out what drives his ambition, he is emphatic in linking successful diving education and fruitful environmental conservation. When I last met with him for a feature in last year’s edition of ‘Floating Asia’, Sendi spoke about the continuing threats to native shark species, drawing attention to loopholes existing in local legislature that facilitate a black market trade in

63

illegally caught shark products. As we sit down once again almost a year later, we pick up where we left off and immediately begin discussing the relationship between protecting local wildlife and educating local communities. “If we are to provide complete protection for the endangered species in the Maldives, it is of utmost importance that the future generations are educated in marine science and more than that, it’s important that they are divers” Sendi explains. “You can go on a boat or to the market and see the day’s catch but it’s not the same as seeing the fish amongst the reef, to see their behaviour and their movements. You can’t truly understand the ocean until you’ve seen it for yourself. It’s by diving that people learn to love and respect the ocean.” Over the past three decades, as the sport

of recreational diving exploded across the globe, the Maldives has become a pilgrimage site for divers arriving from far and wide, eager to encounter some of the ocean’s most exciting inhabitants. Diving aficionados willingly trek halfway across the world for a glimpse of these coral ecosystems. It might therefore come as a surprise to many readers that many of those with these treasures on their doorstep fail to be interested in it. “From all my travels throughout the country for seminars, teaching and business, I can honestly say that only around 3% of locals have tried diving” Sendi explains. “If people don’t experience the underwater world, why would they want to protect it?” This is where Villa College’s Marine Studies team is stepping in with the simple aim of getting more young people in the water through its courses, camps and activity days. In doing so, they are arming a legion of self-titled ‘Ocean Warriors’ - young, educated dive and water sport pros who care deeply about the fragile coral ecosystems that surround them – with the skills to be the next generation of environmental guardians. With their Villa College qualifications, these young people are now joining hundreds of highly qualified local divers in dominating the recreational diving industry in the Maldives – a far cry from the days when Sendi first tried to become an instructor. At that time, he was only the third Maldivian to do so and he remembers being met with hostility from his course director. “He told me that fishermen couldn’t become divers” Sendi recollects, “People didn’t think Maldivians could instruct back then”. Of course, he then went on to infamously fail the course and those with less grit might have accepted that maybe the course director had spoken true. Not so with Sendi. Instead, he re-enrolled, gained his teaching status and went on to become a course director seven years later. As a PADI course director, he then went on to join Villa Hotels as the operations manager of Holiday Island’s dive centre. It was there that Sendi had a conversation with the company’s chairman which would not only change his own life, but that would ultimately change the face of diving education in the Maldives. Sharing his concerns about the lack of educational opportunities for local dive and water sport professionals, the chairman - the Hon. Qasim Ibrahim - asked Sendi to oversee the development of

64

an institution that would change all that. Like Sendi, he wanted to provide a space for Maldivians to become qualified leaders in the diving field. The Institute of Water Sports and Hospitality was born in 2006. The institute was then remodelled into the Marine Studies faculty of Villa College (another of the chairman’s visions to provide high quality local education) and is going from strength to strength. With Sendi taking on more hotel dive centres to run, the reins were passed over to Anna, who is now dean of the faculty. The faculty base was also moved to the capital, allowing the courses to be accessible to a wider scope of local youth. With the announcement of a Bachelors Degree in Marine Science to begin later this year and a waiting list of students eager to join, the future looks very bright. This course – the first of its kind in the country – will continue the Advanced Certificate course model in incorporating both marine science and vocational qualifications. What’s more, the Villa College courses are taught completely in English and the college is now welcoming students from across the globe. What started as an initiative of affirmative action to provide quality education and training for locals has now developed into an educational model that is forward thinking on an international level. Graduating students will then go on to enter the Maldivian workforce in a number of roles: as dive and water sports instructors of course, but also as researchers, marine biologists, wildlife rangers, even government environment officials and legislators, driving the sector towards more eco-friendly practices. In turn, this will have a knock-on effect for the tourists who visit the Maldives. So what does the future hold for the man who started it all? “Well, I don’t want to learn anything else about diving!” Sendi laughs. “Now I want to learn more about the ocean.” It would seem that he also practices what he preaches. Having reached the top of his diving game, Sendi now wants to expand his knowledge of marine science. “Research is my future and I’m excited about it”. With his example to guide them, the outlook for these aspiring ocean warriors has never looked so good.

SURFING IN PRADISE SURFING POINTS

BLUE BOWLS Location: Southern Atolls, Maldives

TIGER STRIPES Location: Southern Atolls, Maldives

Blue Bowls is a favorite stop for liveaboard charters in the Maldives, not only because it’s a long and smooth righthander, but also because anchoring there means an opportunity to meet the local population and spend time in the local village—one of the great advantages to having amazing waves in a truly unique location.

To the northeast of Love Charms, in a narrow inlet between the islands of Gan and Gadhdoo, a lefthander breaks across a reef adorned with narrow gouges that look like stripes on a tiger. Tiger Stripes, sometimes referred to as Rockets, is an open lefthander that doesn’t get as hollow as some of the other nearby waves, but makes up for that with long and consistent carvable walls, fit for a variety of surfers and fun in a variety of conditions.

Also known as Voodoos, Blue Bowls is a flexible right that is unusually protected from onshore winds, due to being tucked away inside the pass between Castaways and Five Islands. More of a point style wave, this protected peak wraps smoothly around the point before opening up into a series of bowls (hence the name). The sections repeatedly bowl up into wide and open faces leading to a nice long ride, fit for shortboard shredders, but mellow enough for funboards and longboards. The protected setting from the wind makes Blue Bowls almost always surfable, especially since it handles all stages of the tide really well. Blue Bowls ranges between three to eight feet but is particularly ideal at four to six feet, with westerly wind during a southeast or southwest swell. This is definitely the place to head towards if unsure about everywhere else.

79

Although Tiger Stripes is pretty unimpressive when small, it luckily ends up being a lot bigger than everywhere else. After a tricky takeoff, the wave leads into a steep wall that speeds up as it turns the corner to an inside section that wraps around and occasionally barrels before mushing out into the channel. Regularly noted for consistency, Tiger Stripes is the type of wave that—if there is swell—you can always count on to perform. It is a notoriously easygoing and cooperative wave, handling all stages of the tide and any variation of southerly swells, while breaking best during a southeast swell with northerly winds. It typically ranges from two to eight feet in size, but is definitely better the bigger the swell—a prime option when everywhere else is closing out.

ANTIQUES Location Southern Atolls, Maldives

LOVE CHARMS Location Southern Atolls, Maldives

Located in the same inlet between the islands of Gan and Gadhdoo, Antiques matches every left that Tiger Stripes pumps out with a smaller, and more forgiving righthander. As the name indicates, Antiques is slightly less fierce than its nearby sister wave but almost as consistent.

Love Charms is Huvadhoo Atoll’s lovely little patch of lefthanders that you can always count on. Located right next to Two Ways, Love Charms is a love letter to all you goofy footers out there who spent or spend countless hours drawing left-breaking waves in the corner of your notebooks. This place is always breaking, and in the right conditions can churn out some really amazing waves.

Ranging in size between two to six feet, Antiques shares Tiger Stripes consistency, but lacks its power and size—making it a pretty good spot for beginners and intermediate surfers, especially natural footers. Similar to Two Ways, the close proximity of these two waves breaking in opposite directions leads this area to be another boat trip and surf charter favorite, which sometimes can lead to crowds, but nothing too unreasonable when you are dealing with two separate peaks. Like Tiger Stripes, Antiques nearly always breaks at any stage of the tide, but gets particularly noteworthy during a larger southerly swell, with northwest winds. This might not be the wave you sail out to on its own, but the close proximity to Tiger Stripes makes this narrow little inlet pass a real treasure.

Love Charms is one of the few waves in Huvadhoo that transforms entirely depending on both the tide and the size of the swell. On a lower tide, during a smaller swell, Love Charms breaks up into two distinct sections—which is arguably the best case scenario. Bigger swells and higher tide tend to connect the waves into a long and hollow wall that can offer an incredibly long and hollow ride, if it holds up down the line—but even if the wave sections off the inside barrels up into protected pockets. Breaking in any stage of the tide, and handling pretty much any swell size or wind direction, Love Charms is at its best when breaking between two to ten feet, with northwest winds during any southerly swell.

TWO WAYS Location Southern Atolls, Maldives Booga Reef, called Two Ways because it breaks to the left and the right, is located just across the pass from Five Islands. Really similar to Sultans and Honky’s in North Male Atoll—Two Ways (as the name promises) offers two incredible waves that peel in two different directions from the same southern point of the island. Two Ways is the kind of set up that surfers everywhere have been imagining for years, but never thought quite possible. Basically, Booga Reef is one of the many stops along your Maldives surf trip where dreams come true. As opposed to the shallow and speedy surrounding waves, Two Ways offers slower waves that peel nice and easy through deeper water, a little less powerful, but great for intermediate surfers hoping to practice some more technical maneuvers that the three-second rides at their local break have not allowed. Protected a little bit more than the lefthander, the right is usually a bit bigger and holds its shape a little better than the left, but it also requires a bigger swell to reach its protected position. With waves that typically range between three to six feet, Two Ways is that place on the Southern Atoll boat trip that everyone remembers with the word “fun” because it is a good spot for all levels and usually offers surf charters the best refuge when the southerly facing reefs are blown out or simply out of control. This, of course, means an increase in crowds, but remember you are dealing with two perfect waves—so there’s always the chance everyone else will be lining up for the righthanders, while you pull into left after left of pure bliss. Since it breaks in all levels of the tide, be sure to check this spot out during a southerly swell and in northerly winds to find it at its best.

81

FIVE ISLANDS Location Southern Atolls, Maldives Similar to Blue Bowls, Five Islands is a long righthander well protected from south to southwest winds. More of a cannon than Blue Bowls, Five Islands throws harder and hollows out more as it breaks along the reef. Breaking in a series of different sections, the wave needs a good southerly swell to combine all the sections, but creates one of the longest and cleanest barrel rides in the Southern Atolls when it does. The outside section forces a deep take off, which is a little challenging but provides the necessary speed to make the subsequent sections. After the takeoff it is off to the races, and the surfer to make the most sections wins not only an epic wave, but an easier paddle back out. Five Islands can handle the biggest swells and all stages of the tide, but typically ranges from two to eight feet and is best at mid to high tide—which also helps you avoid the shallow reef on the inside. If you are thirsting for tubes, Five Islands is one of the more consistent barrel spots in the Southern Atolls.

ARUGAMBAY MAIN POINT Location Sri Lanka Located in the city of Pottuvil at the east coast. Good quality waves, possible to find many different kind of points from that area. Beach breaks to beginners and good stady reef breaks to advanced surfers.

DEVATA / GALLE Location Sri Lanka

BEACONS Location Southern Atolls, Maldives In line with the name, Beacons is the first spot surf charters usually stop at when traveling to Huvadhoo Atoll from the central atolls. Yet, even though it is first, it may not be the best break to ease into your Maldives surf trip, as many consider it the most powerful wave in the Maldives. An exposed reef break, Beacons is a righthander that is both fierce and fickle. While consistently providing surf, it is really only surfable in a clean southwest swell. Swells from any other direction almost always lead to straight close-outs onto an unfriendly and unrelenting coral reef. Thankfully Maldivian summers are partial to southwest swells, and Beacons often lights up during the clean ground swells of summer. Although the reef is always a little shallower than preferred, the right swell direction causes the wave to break cleanly down the reef in all stages of the tide. When the northerly wind meets that southwest swell, Beacons barrels up into the type of wave you have set as your computer screensaver—beastly, hollow, and beautiful. Ranging from two to ten feet, Beacons is certainly not the safest wave to surf in the Maldives, but it may very well be the most exciting—especially when it gets big.

Called Deveta or Galle. The wave is a good one for beginners with smaller waves making their way to the beach. The wave breaks onto sand and can be surfed throughout the year. Avoid after heavy rain due to pollution from run off.

ELEPHANT ROCK Location Sri Lanka Great spot to surf, lovely location where you can enjoy the surroundings from the lineup. It breaks on all tides and is at its best between april and september. This wave is suitable for surfers of all skill levels and is nice and safe to surf. No real hazards to worry about, does not get too crowded.

HIKKADUWA Location Sri Lanka Hikkaduwa has 3 main breaks : a beach break for beginners in the south. A main reef break in the middle which can be very crowded.Another reef break in the North, usually getting smaller waves and far less crowded.

- there are many places to stay.Water quality can be a problem - muddy poluted water at times. This spot has also been marked as a beach break, with sand bottom and suitable for beginners.

MIDIGAMA Location Sri Lanka Midigama left is a popular point break that breaks off Midigama Beach. When the conditions are good you can expect plenty of barrels and long rides. Great at 6', Also know as Lazy's Left.

MIDIGAMA RIGHT Location: Sri Lanka Midigama (Ram's) right is the wave that breaks right out from Rams Guest House. Expect to get a barrel when the conditions are good. Right across from Midigama left, no suprise there.

UNAWATUNA Location Sri Lanka Unawatuna is a short but powerful left hand wave that breaks on the reef off Unawatuna Beach. This wave is for experienced surfers only and not at all suitable for beginners (who should check out Weligama instead). The rocks, coral and urchins all add to the excitement, especially in a bigger swell.

WELIGAMA Location Sri Lanka

MADIHA Location Sri Lanka

A wave popular with beginners due to its protected beach, small waves and sandy sea bed.

This place is really good for any surfer. In the season, many surfers visit this place. Locals are really friendly. come here and you won't regret it!

It's a slow and powerless wave, nothing to get excited about for the more experienced surfer.

Stay at Madiha, Polhena or Dondra
