Due to its geographical setting, the customs and social behavior of Maldivians have been greatly influenced by Africa, Arabia, India, Sri Lanka and East Asia; with unique traditions shaped by the island nature and the ocean. Some Maldivian dishes are influenced and fused with flavors of the rich spicy taste of India and Sri Lanka. However, many of the traditional Maldivian dishes are unique to the island nation; fresh, smoked and dried tuna, grated coconut and coconut milk form the main ingredients most of traditional dishes. Maldivian arts and crafts have been heavily influenced by the country’s environment. Coral stone carvings and calligraphy that adorn mosques hundreds of years ago, bear witness to the deft skills of Maldivian craftsmen.
Maldives is typically bright, hot and humid all year round. There are two monsoons: South-West (Hulhangu) Monsoon from May - October and North-East (Iruvai) Monsoon from November - April. Temperatures range between 24°C AND 33°C throughout the year.

CULTURE The Philippines is a tropical country which boasts volcanic islands, forests, and sandy beaches. To visit the Philippines is to become engulfed by a kaleidoscope of culture and tradition, with the varied blend of races that have influenced this group of islands for thousands of years. Most influences are results of previous colonization, deriving mainly from the culture of Spain and the United States. It is a mixture of Malayo-Polynesian and Hispanic cultures with an influence of Chinese. Their art, music, architecture and dance are all influenced by the mixture of these people. Despite all of these influences, the old Asian culture of Filipinos has been retained and are clearly seen in their way of life, beliefs and customs. 80% of Filipino people practice the Christian religion, making up about 80% of the Philippine population (mostly Catholics) while Islam is 11%. 9

Another famous aspect of country is the Ratnapura area – world-famous for the sapphires and rubies found in the watery soil.

MAJESTY 120
Gulf Craft announces the official launch of its brand-new superyacht, the 37-meter tri-deck Majesty 120, initially announced during the Monaco Yacht Show 2019 by Executive Chairman of the company, H. E. Mohammed H. Al Shaali. The stunning addition to the Majesty Yachts – Superyacht Collection of luxury motor yachts took to the waters of the Emirates for the first time on February 18, 2020, and completed the first sea trial testing of its MTU engines, Kohler generators and other fundamental equipment successfully on March 31, 2020. The Majesty 120 will be heading to its next sea trial in the coming weeks for more thorough and extended testing. The luxury ocean craft’s new advanced electrical system which replaces the traditional hydraulic system, will be put through its paces in a series of dock and sea trials. The engines and generator systems will also undergo extensive testing with the presence of the team from MTU, Kholer and class surveyors.
Paul Gray, Chief Operations Officer stated: “The completion of Majesty 120’s first sea trial was another successful addition to the yacht’s production milestones and it is a momentous day in the proud history of both Gulf Craft and Majesty Yachts. The GRP and Carbon Fiber superyacht truly is a masterpiece and a perfect example of what the future of yacht building looks like. With its efficiency and comfort onboard, as well as a more usable living space, the Majesty 120 is a superyacht perfectly tailored to suit European and American markets, as well as appealing to our home GCC territories. This truly represents the start of a new era for our company as we strive to bring more to the yachting world with every new product launch.”

In a series of engineering breakthroughs for Gulf Craft, the superyacht is the first-ever Majesty Yacht model to have completely electrically-powered onboard equipment. The engines and generators alone remain powered by conventional diesel methods; from the fin stabilisers to the thrusters and steering, as well as the balconies and the passerelle. None of the systems onboard require any use of hydraulics, resulting in a much quieter yacht that is also much more efficient to maintain. Listening to market demands, the Gulf Craft team has integrated more efficiency as well as more comfort onboard.
“The superyacht tri-deck Majesty 120 has ample features and smart layout configuration that opens its market opportunity to international markets. Beautifully designed interiors and timeless exterior lines makes the Majesty 120 a unique proposition in the market today.”
The superyacht’s dynamic exterior profile features angular lines and contemporary styling. The shipyard’s in-house design team followed the new DNA of Majesty Yachts – Superyacht Collection as featured on the award-winning Majesty 140. One of the key features onboard is the vast sun deck space, which is 30 per cent larger than yachts in its class. The launch of the Majesty 120 is one of the company’s most highly anticipated projects to date, constructed using advanced composites such as GRP and carbon fibre. Since its announcement, the team has received multiple interests in this superyacht. Nizar Tagi, Chief Commercial Officer said:

Furthermore, a total of seven crew can also be accommodated onboard. The Majesty 120 has a confirmed Gross Tonnage of 290 GT and is powered by twin MTU 2,600 hp each. Soneva’s surf programme offers guests as well as kids from the islands nearby, the chance to catch some waves at breaks less-chartered around Baa and Noonu Atoll. Carefully designing that perfect surf experience, while taking into account Mother Nature’s shifts and every miniscule detail, is Azhoora Ahmed. The Surf Experience Manager at Soneva, she curates surf programmes that will guide you towards really capturing the grandeur of the infinite blue with a personalised selection of surf breaks, whether you’re a complete first-timer or a total pro. The ocean has always been a massive part of Azhoora’s life, having also held a number of Women’s National Swimming Records in the Maldives. She is driven by being able to share her love for the ocean with the people around her. We had a chat with her to learn more about her experiences and her passion.

Tell us about your journey to Soneva Resorts. How did it all began?
provided me the opportunity to continue surfing and share my love for the ocean with others.
After working in the events industry for over seven years, I was on a short break when I heard about a new opening at Soneva, with the interesting title of Surf Experience Manager. It was a unique opportunity – to be managing the Maldives’ first fully sustainable surf programme. From the moment I found out about it I was intrigued.
From where do you draw your inspiration in the hospitality industry?
Soneva Surf programme offers so much more than a surf experience for guests. We strive to foster a love for the ocean in our guests, encourage them to learn more about the ocean and do all they can to protect it. A major focus of our programme is to introduce surfing to young people in the Maldives, particularly in Baa and Noonu atoll where we are located. The aim is to introduce more young Maldivians to surfing and create the next generation of ocean stewards. It has been almost two years since I joined Soneva and I have enjoyed every bit of the time. My role as the Surf Experience Manager has
As the Surf Experience Manager I get to meet, interact and work with people from different backgrounds and nationalities. The Soneva team is incredibly diverse, which creates an exciting, electric atmosphere to work in. I also get to regularly interact with inspirational people from different parts of the world who share my passion for nature and do incredible work to protect our planet. This is where I draw my inspiration from – from these personal connections. What were some of the challenges you faced as a woman in this profession and how did you overcome them? Hospitality in the Maldives is male-dominated and this is true for watersports too. Things have been changing slowly but surely – now there are more women in hospitality than before. Here at Soneva, I am lucky to be working alongside many inspirational women.
FEATURE
FROM THE SHORES OF SONEVA WITH AZHOORA AHMED
Similarly, there are plenty of strong, inspirational watersports women in the Maldives now, ranging from surfers to divers and a lot of them are based in resorts. Hopefully, this trend will continue. The key to overcoming obstacles and challenging the gender stereotype is to persevere despite the challenges – to not overthink and continue to do what you are passionate about, despite what people may say. How does the Soneva brand bind luxury with environmental sustainability in the race to eliminate single-use plastics from the island communities in the Maldives? At Soneva, we firmly believe that luxury must go hand-in-hand with environmental sustainability. In fact, the SLOW in our core philosophy stands for sustainable, local, organic and wellness and these concepts are strongly rooted in all our guest experiences, operations and engagement with local communities. In 2008, Soneva began producing its own drinking water, eliminating the need for water in single-use plastic bottles from our operations. Similarly, we do not use any other beverage packaged in single-use plastic and so we are completely single-use plastic bottle free. We also do not allow any single-use plastic bags onto our properties and instead use reusable cloth bags. We believe that, in addition to helping the environment, these initiatives elevate guest experience and the concept of luxury.
Photo: Julia Neeson
My most proud moment was when some participants from Soneva Surf Pro went on to compete in the National Championships in the Maldives. My hope is to reach out to more young people, introduce them to the surfing world and in the process create a strong bond for the oceans in their hearts. This is what we will continue to do through the Soneva Surf Programme.
As part of the Soneva Namoonaa programme, we have funded and continue to support a water bottling plant in the neighbouring island of Maalhos. Our water is bottled in reusable glass bottles and is sold below market rate. Over 80% of the households in Maalhos now drink our water, significantly reducing the amount of single-use plastic in the islands. We estimate that this initiative has reduced the single-use plastic in the island by 60%. As the president of the NGO managing the bottling plant I am very proud of this initiative. Under the Soneva Namoonaa programme we also collect and recycle all single use plastic waste from Maalhos, Dharavandhoo and Kihaadhoo. How do you envision sustainability in the future of hospitality? Today, tourists are more environmentally conscientious compared to before – they are mindful of the impact hospitality operations have on the environment. They prioritise experiences that have the least impact on the environment. They want to stay in environmentally conscious properties with sustainable practices. I suspect this trend will grow in the post-COVID world and environmentally sustainable hospitality operations will have an edge over the competition.

The Soneva Surf programme has introduced surfing to hundreds of students across Baa and Noonu Atoll last year. What was your biggest takeaways from it? Yes, that is definitely one of the highlights of my time here at Soneva. While some of the Soneva Surf participants have tried surfing before, others were completely new to the sport. To be able to introduce so much youthful energy into Maldives’ surfing community has been an incredibly rewarding experience. If you had one piece of advice to give someone starting out, what would you say? Persevere – if you did not do well enough the first time, keep at it until you get there. Build a network of support around you – this will cushion some of the blows life throws at you and will be a source of strength and allow you to bounce back.

A TRUE REVOLUTION IN PROPELLERS
DEVELOPMENT OF SUZUKI’S FIRST CONTRA-ROTATING PROPELLER The innovative contra-rotating propeller design provides more grip underwater, and because contrarotating propellers distribute the engine’s torque evenly over two propellers. The Dual Propeller System will provide the ultimate boating experience.
PROPELLER BLADE DESIGN
The new DF325A is another significant advance in outboard technology andpower, giving you the ultimate four stroke outboard. Efficiency and balance using multiple outboards The DF325A’s contra-rotating propeller technology takes this process one step further by enabling mounting either side at the same time as eliminating steering torque and maximizing true and straight propulsion forces.
SUZUKI’S LEAN BURN CONTROL SYSTEM The innovative Lean Burn Control System predicts fuel needs according to operating conditions, allowing the engine to run on a leaner, more efficient air-fuel ratio. It delivers its benefits over a wide operating range, providing significant improvements in fuel economy from low-speed operation into the cruising range.
A new three-blade/three-blade propeller set up has been developed that provides incredible acceleration and increased performance. In testing, this configuration recorded the highest speeds, and delivered, even under heavy load and at high rotation speeds
DUAL INJECTORS FOR BOTH COOLING AND POWER The all new Dual Injector System uses two smaller injectors giving immense precision, improved atomisation and increased fuel efficiency. It atomises the fuel and cools the cylinder.
QUIET OPERATION Suzuki outboards have long been noted for their quiet operation. To ensure the level of quiet operation, The DF325A is fitted with a resonator on the intake manifold.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
With 125 Vessels and 9 Bareboat Charters registered and operating in the Maldives, Gulf Craft has consistently catered to the majority of the market with absolutely no compromise on Quality, Standard and Safety. As the UAE’s pioneering shipyard set up in 1982, Gulf Craft continues to enthral the world with the finest luxury yachts and leisure boats for touring, passenger and multipurpose transportation vessels. We spoke about the core principles and the success behind the company with the General Manager of Gulf Craft Maldives, Terry Stamatakos, who has been working directly with the stakeholders of the Maldives and the UAE Gulf Craft Team since 2013.

You starting off your career as the Project Manager at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in the US, until you moved to the fibre division at Drago Boats in Greece, after which you worked as a Project Manager at Al Shaali Marine, and now you are the General Manager at Gulf Craft Maldives. What inspired you to become a part of the Boating Industry? I have always loved the sea; it gives you a sense of creation and freedom like it does in the Maldives. In my native country Greece, we were born by the sea. The boats always fascinated me from a very young age. What is your principle role as the General Manager of Gulf Craft Maldives? Please tell us a little bit about the story behind your move to the Maldives. My principal role is to lead the local company so it performs to its full potential. This covers key aspects such as maximisation of productivity while adhering to Health & Safety, as well as to boat design and boat-building quality standards in addition to keeping the cost affordable to the local market. I am also very keen on increasing the market potential through effective sales, tailoring innovation to reflect the local market conditions and to produce the right product for the right use, and of course, offering great customer service. I seek to ensure that Gulf Craft actively contributes to the local community as a key partner in Maldives, and I always try to inspire my team through setting the example. Now, back in 2013 His Excellency Mohammed Hussain Al Shaali, the Chairman of Gulf Craft, invited me and he suggested that I “temporarily” move to the Maldives to create a new production system and to restart the company afresh. I did not hesitate to accept; after 7 years of “temporary” stay, I have not regretted it for even a single minute!

Therefore, along with the administration, we made the decision to open our doors to all ordinary people; to give them the opportunity to setup their own business, and thus, prove to them that a boat is not just a dream, but well within reach of ordinary people. I strongly believe that our success story to date in the Maldives has greatly depended on this very move - building trust between us and our customers is the key to success for both our customers as well as for Gulf Craft. To this day, even in these difficult months of COVID-19, we support, standby, work and move forward together with our customers smoothly and without problems. I really want to thank our customers from the bottom of my heart for the way they treat not only myself, but also Gulf Craft and our entire team. I also wish to add that we all live in a rather small place and as such, we are all like one big family. I am proud to be greeted on the streets by customer and friends, I am proud to see them growing and expanding their businesses, and really, the image of seeing Gulf Craft boats everywhere in the country fills you with pride. I truly thank them all! What are the key areas that need to be focused on before designing and building a brand-new yacht or boat?
What are the major challenges you have faced throughout your time with Gulf Craft? How did you overcome them and what are the lessons learned?
I will only answer on behalf of Gulf Craft Maldives because in Dubai there is a whole team comprising of the CEO, Operations Manager, Naval Architects, Draughtsmen etc. that provide input to design and creation of a yacht.
What I basically encountered was the difference in mentality and market conditions compared to other places and people. It didn’t take long to understand the difference and uniqueness at all levels. The tactics we needed to follow had to be unique. When I first arrived here, our customers were mostly the resorts and large companies. However, my daily life brought me much closer to ordinary people with dreams, creativity and willingness to succeed – not just the wealthy.
As far as the Maldives is concerned, I can say that our individual customers, resorts, and even the army and the navy work closely with us to develop and create models that fulfil their exact requirements and answer their needs, whatever they may be - we have ferry designs, as well as VIP designs as per the needs of every resort for luxury transportation.

This approach of catering for the exact needs of key customers resulted in the legacy models developed specially for MNDF, the Coast Guard and the Police. All of which were created through close co-operation and synergy between Gulf Craft and each of the above institutions. It’s not that easy to design a boat; one needs to know exactly what the market wants, what the customer wants and to never underestimate or ignore the individual sea and weather conditions that the desired boat will operate into. In general, there are many factors that need to be considered to successfully design a boat – the above mentioned are just a few. Here at Gulf Craft, we have both the required depth and width of experience, as well as the operational capability to design vessels in accordance with the needs of each market. How would you describe the success behind Gulf Craft? If you look at the Gulf Craft website, you will see that our boats are recognised worldwide and have been awarded many times with top recognition for their design and shipbuilding standards. I don’t need to add more as our awards speak for our boats, and as I have mentioned earlier, a great team of highly talented professionals is leading this effort and is already planning and designing the next generation of boats. Gulf Craft builds ocean-going crafts ranging from 31 to 175 feet in length at the company’s state-of-the art shipyards in the UAE and is backed by a strong global network spanning Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. What is the strength of Gulf Craft in the global market? It’s true that Gulf Craft is supported worldwide by a network of professional partners; our Head Office in Dubai is doing a great job and Gulf Craft today is among

the top ten boat and yacht companies in the world, with aspirations to climb even higher. This is where the Maldives plays a key role due to their strategic positioning on the world map. Our presence here gives us the opportunity to expand and to grow our business worldwide. You will soon hear about our ambitious plans that will benefit both the Maldives, and also our customers. Please be patient as His Excellency Mohammed Hussain Al Shaali, Chairman of Gulf Craft, and the dynamic and creative CEO Abeer Al Shaali are working on this direction – official announcements will be made soon I also wish to stress that another key innovation beyond the technically innovative design of our boats is the appointment of Madam Abeer Al Shaali as CEO of the company, a brilliant mind for the future of our company. What’s the difference between the Majesty Yachts, Nomad Yachts, Oryx Yachts, Silvercraft and Utility Series? Which models are most suitable for the Maldives’ shores, and what are the main challenges you face in the Maldivian market? Each boat is designed to addresses different needs and uses. Majesty and Nomad are mainly yachts for pleasure and VIP transportation, whereas the models Oryx, Silvercraft and Utility were designed to perform exceptionally in a variety of activities, such as fishing, diving, transportation, entertainment, taxi and more. They are truly boats for all tastes and purposes. The most common boats in use in the Maldives are ferries and VIP ferries. However, we are opening the market soon for yachts and for bigger boats, plus as I have already mentioned, we will soon announce our plans for the future and our new models. In your opinion, what is the most effective marine or boating event in terms of networking, exposure and return, which you believe boat owners and industry professionals should definitely not miss out on? The Boat Show of course. Although any event associated with the sea and tourism is also related to the boating industry, thus, together we must promote and support all these exhibitions as they are directly connected to our work. I must point-out however that a well-organised
boat show in a Marina not only facilitates exposure and networking, but it also promotes other services related to the Maritime industry, as well as the host country. I believe a local but very well organised Boat Show here in the Maldives would positively reflect everything great that the country has to offer. It would boost not only local boat-building, but also Maldivian Tourism, Supply Chain, Maritime Maintenance Support, etc. – in other words, a whole range of services that work in tandem with the Maritime industry.
Touring 48
Last but not least, it would ultimately raise the profile of Maldives worldwide even more as a maritime hub in the Indian Ocean. With your extensive background and experience in the field, working with many industry giants and professionals, does it help and has it influenced your sales strategies?
Nomad 55 (FLY collection)
I dare to say that everything I knew before coming to the Maldives has been almost useless here! As I have mentioned earlier, the uniqueness of the market and of our local people and customers pushed us to new tactics. I can admit that I have learned a lot in the 7 years that I have been here, and I have given my best to offer our customers better and safer boats, with more options. Nomad 65 (FLY collection)
I believe we have succeeded thus far, and continue to do so. We still have a long way to go for what we are yet to present in the future. What advice do you have for the new generation looking to start a career in boat building or as boat operators? My advice to our new generation is to be patient and to work with specific goals in mind. They will be achieved through time consistently when working with a plan in mind and with resilience.
Nomad 75 (FLY collection)
We at Gulf Craft have proposed to the government and it has been approved to establish a school in the Maldives that will train Maldivians as boat builders, mechanics, electricians – everything that has to do with the manufacturing of boats. This is another great offer of Gulf Craft to the country that hosts us and that we love. How did you start your career as a diver? What made you choose this career-path?
Clownfish Photo: ORCA DIVE CLUB
I always loved the sea and was very inspired by the images in Nat Geo Magazine during school and college times. While job-hunting, I met the Director and Founder of Genesis Film Productions, Prahlad Kakar, way back in 1993, and he assigned me to the role of Casting Assistant. Whilst working with Prahlad I came across a photograph of himself and his family in an amazingly beautiful beach destination; brilliant blue waters and white sand. I was just so mesmerized and spellbound by the beauty of this place that I decided to pay a visit. Not only was it my first time in Lakshadweep Islands, it was the very first time I wore a scuba mask and submerged my head under the clear blue water, where I saw fish as clear as day, and a fabulous underwater world. That was it for me! From that moment on, there was no looking back. At the time, being a scuba diving instructor was not a career option but I did give it a thought, and after a lot of convincing my family, I pursued my passion to become a CMAS Two Star Instructor two years later.

Where was your first-ever dive? And how many destinations have you dived in? I dived and lived in the Lakshadweep islands from 1995 - 2003. Post that, Orca Dive Club was born as a PADI Inland Dive centre. We taught people in Mumbai and travelled to various other destinations for fun dives, or to complete courses. This, as a business model, worked perfectly. Our first full liveaboard charter was in the Maldives in 2010, and ever since, I have dived many times in the Maldives as well as in Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, Philippines, Micronesia, Palau, Fiji, Tonga, Galapagos, Socorro to name a few. Do you think India can be a great destination in attracting local and international travellers to come and explore the unique dive locations for recreational scuba diving if marketed well? What are your all-time favourite dive locations in India, and the best seasons? India has huge potential for dive tourism – inbound and outbound. The number of travellers are increasing steadily over the years and this market is yet to reach its peak. Along our massive coastline, there are some good dive spots in in places like Pondicherry on the Southeast coast, Malvan and Netrani off our western coast. My top destinations are always Lakshadweep, off the Southwest coast of India, and Andaman Islands off the Eastern Coast – two world-class dive destinations. The best diving season runs from October to April in both locations How did you form Orca Dive Club, and what’s the story behind the name? mentor, Mr. Prahlad Kakar, suggested that we call it ORCA. I loved the name, as Orcas are the most powerful mammals in the sea – they are majestic

creatures. Their high intelligence, physical power, and cooperative hunting techniques make them one of the planet’s top predators. I was fortunate enough to swim with them after many years as a diver. This was on my trip to the Galapagos in 2019, and I cannot but say, this was the best experience of my career so far. Who inspired you to be a diver? James Bond, National Geographic and Mr. Prahlad Kakar. What are Orca Dive Club’s strengths, compared to other service providers in India and across other South Asian destinations? Also, how many divers have you trained and introduced to the world of diving so far? At Orca Dive Club, we are passion-driven, not numbers-driven. We aim to provide high quality instructions by our experienced instructors. We have a fantastic team, all dedicated to one goal only – making good responsible divers! We follow our clients through their certification process, even if we have referred them to other dive centres worldwide after starting up with us in Mumbai. I firmly believe that our strength is in our service and dedication to our clients and divers. We also travel outbound, at least eight to ten dive trips per year, heading to far-out destinations – many of them, where we were the first group of Indian divers to visit. As for how many divers we have trained and produced – too many to even count. You and your wife Shameen are both certified divers. Were you both divers before you got married, and do you work together at Orca Dive Club? I was certified, yes. However, my wife was a men’s wear fashion designer when we met. She knew that I was a diving instructor when we first started dating, and that I lived in Lakshadweep for most months of the year. She, being a national level swimmer, I guess the ocean was the bonding factor for us. I introduced her to scuba diving during our honeymoon in 1998 in Lakshadweep, and I am proud to say she took to it like a natural. That is when she got certified, back in 1998 as a CMAS diver.
A lot of couples do business together in the same field. Do you believe it’s an added advantage to partner with your spouse in business, especially if the business is a passion? It’s a huge advantage. As long as you understand each other’s passion and vision for your profession, things just fall into place – the trust and the bond just get stronger. If you could only dive in one place, where would that be? Lakshadweep Islands. Where and how was your most recent dive adventure? I’ve just returned from Fiji and Tonga. Diving with the bull sharks was an amazing experience, and being surrounded by at least fifty sharks is mind blowing. Also, swimming with humpback whales in Tonga was a humbling experience..
Photo: ORCA DIVE CLUB
You also started the company ‘Underwater Film Services’. How did you get involved in underwater filming? How did you get the experience you need to work as a professional underwater cameraman – did you train or are you self-taught? To straighten out some facts, I am not an underwater cameraman – I am the underwater supervisor who looks after the overall safety during the shoot. Our company, Underwater Film Services was formed in 2003 as a specialised underwater unit to take on sequences. Our first job was from Vishesh Entertainment for Mr. Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt. Since then, we have executed over 200 underwater projects. We are a team of underwater professionals – cinematographers, technicians, stunt doubles, safety divers, so on and so forth – who execute underwater sequences, right from training actors, production, rigging sets and much more.

And yes, we do work together. Shameen ran her fashion boutique for fifteen years until about five years ago, when she dissolved her business to help take our passion for scuba diving to a higher level. She took on Orca Dive Club fulltime as the head of operations and dive trip planner, along with handling all the logistics for the dive trips. I would lead the trips as well as train students. We are both partners at Orca Dive Club.

and have shot action, horror, romance and dance sequences, to name a few. Personally, when given the liberty to shoot I like to shoot in the open water with the beautiful marine fauna and flora. How did Underwater Film Services become a success in Bollywood and how often do you have to shoot underwater Bollywood sequences? Also, what does it take to get considered for such a production? Do you have any advice for aspiring cameramen and women looking to start a professional career in underwater filming? Since our first project in 2003, we were happy to be associated with Bhatt Camp. We met many production persons, keen to let their producers know that there is a professional underwater unit in our country.
Photo: ORCA DIVE CLUB
Who or what inspired you to start Underwater Film Services? Films like James Bond with a lot of underwater sequences inspired and fascinated me. Taking this passion and turning it into a new venture with the backing of Mr. Prahlad Kakar, I started Underwater Film Service. Most importantly, it was the thought of having this facility in our very own country. I mean, why go to Hollywood when you can have it all here in India. We now have many cinematographers and photographers who are also divers, who shoot the most complex sequences underwater. Many people mention that you have trained the most leading actors and their family members. May we ask who they are?
Photo: ORCA DIVE CLUB
Sure! Some of them include Mr. Saif Ali Khan and his family, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan and his family, Mr. Aamir Khan, Mr. Tiger Shroff, Mr. Vicky Kaushal, Ms. Parineeti Chopra, Ms. Katrina Kaif, Ms. Shraddha Kapoor, Ms. Alia Bhatt, Ms. Aditi Rao Hydari, Mr. Sidharth Malhotra, Mr. Boman Irani, Mr. Varun Dhawan, Mr. John Abraham and many more. For the underwater sequences, what sort of camera equipment or dive gear do you typically use?
Photo: ORCA DIVE CLUB
We shoot underwater sequences on Cine Cameras with specialised underwater housings. These can be operated by cinematographers who are certified SCUBA divers. There are many aspects that go into the technicalities of making and executing an underwater shoot. Perhaps one day we can have a separate section on this subject as well. With regards to genres and styles of filming, do you specialise in anything in particular, or are you more of a generalist? We shoot underwater sequences as per the script, and our suggestions before and during the shoot are taken into consideration. We take on different genres

Sometimes we would take on just one job in a six to eight-month period, or sometimes four jobs in a month. It all depends on the length of the underwater scene on the script. We have a super team of certified underwater cinematographers, safety divers, stunt professionals, instructors and assistants that form a very safe unit. Of course, the work speaks for itself. Many assistants see us working and get inspired. So, before the young cameramen would like to make the shift to shoot underwater, they must become good divers with good buoyancy and other skills. We do get young trainees and train them on the job. We are also planning a specialised dry and wet workshop for young cameramen and women, to help them further this as a career opportunity. What are your favourite underwater shoots for Bollywood and what is it like working with the actors? I liked shooting for Kites with Mr. Hrithik Roshan and Ms. Bárbara Mori, both of whom trained sincerely for the shoot in the Maldives. Then there was ‘Ek Villian’ with Ms. Shraddha Kapoor and Mr. Sidharth Malhotra which was shot in Mauritius, and many more – the list can go on. Actors who are excited to do training is what excites me too, as I can see the dedication and that they want to learn and look great underwater. It’s their accomplishment that makes it the best. How much work actually goes into producing an underwater shoot sequence? For instance, how long would you spend on location? How long would you spend underwater typically to get all the footage required for a sequence? So, this entirely depends on the script, actortraining, and comfort during the shoot after training. Sometimes an underwater shoot can be a few hours as it is shallow shot, or then an entire day or a two- to three-day shoot to set up rehearse and shoot – it all depends. Every shoot is unique. Underwater shoots are a specialised job that need a team of underwater professionals. Training the actors is top priority so that they can get comfortable before the shoot day.

Your most memorable moment from the filming? There are so many, that to filter it down to just one is tough. One of the most memorable moments was probably shooting for Kidnap with Minissha Lamba and Imran Khan many years ago. And coming back to Orca Dive Club, what sort of role does Orca Dive Club play in conservation? Photo: ORCA DIVE CLUB
Clownfish Photo: ORCA DIVE CLUB
When student divers take on the PADI course, they start out in our pool here in Mumbai. This is where is all begins. At the pool site during the two-hour briefing inform our students about the fragile ecosystem. When learning to dive, students also learn how to keep themselves neutrally buoyant underwater, this helps to avoid damage. We also inform them about picking up plastic, garbage, fishing lines, etc. at the depths. More so when you’re creating divers no matter what the age group, you’re creating ocean advocates right there. One dip in the ocean and there is a whole new feeling that overtakes you. What are some of your proudest moments in the sphere of diving? My proudest moment would have to be the day I introduced my family to this amazing underwater world. Also, when my son Zahaan was certified as a CMAS five-star with my instructor who taught me back in 1995. It was such an amazing moment and all I can do is thank God and Mr. Hugues Vitry from Blue Water Diving Mauritius.
Blue Spotted Stingray Photo: ORCA DIVE CLUB
What sort of changes in the marine environment have you seen in these years of diving? I have seen large areas of reefs being bleached during the El Niño in 1998 – a devastating sight I have witnessed. However, in time some reefs did show promise of regrowth. I have seen the reefs in Lakshadweep and Maldives turning white and algae suffocating the hard coral. I hope we can all do our bit and bring about some change to protect our fragile ecosystem. Floating Asia hopes to highlight sustainable business practices and conservation projects, in order to encourage our guests to look at how they travel and what they can do to conserve the marine environment. As a long-time diver, you have probably seen the good, the bad and the ugly within the dive industry, do you think dive tourism has a role in conservation? Can it be sustainable? Dive tourism can play a huge role in conservation. Dive centres worldwide need to inform their students and guests about protecting the surrounding reefs. Picking up plastic or garbage on land and underwater should become a reflex action and not only a planned action. This will surely help. Responsible garbage disposal plans by individuals and governments need to be enforced and executed – not halfway efforts, but a full plan that can surely make a difference. There’s no point in only cleaning the beaches when the streets have litter on every corner. This same waste goes into the gutter system and chokes the ocean. There are many things to be done and very little time. Saving water and electricity, rain water harvesting, and using renewable energy in resorts are all good moves. What is your message to new divers? Respect the ocean, it’s vast and powerful. Please do not take it for granted and look after each other while diving. Look out for any debris and plastic, and it would be much appreciated if you could pick it up and have it disposed of correctly. Help any animal if they are in distress when you encounter one. Last but not least KEEP IT SAFE – dive safe and there are no shortcuts to learning.

ADEX PIXEL “VIRTUAL” EXPO [APE] – POST EVENT HIGHLIGHT #Wow World Oceans Week, ADEX Pixel Virtual Expo[#APE] and Blu Hope Campaign
The World Oceans Day is an International Day held every year on June 8 to raise awareness of the vital importance of our oceans and the role they play in sustaining a healthy planet. A global celebration, it looks to bring people and organisations together across the globe in a series of events and programmes highlighting how we can all help protect and converse the oceans. Originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. World Oceans Day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008. The International Day supports the implementation of worldwide Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and fosters public interest in the management of the ocean and its resources. On World Oceans Day 2020, ADEX Pixel Virtual Expo in collaboration with Blu Hope Campaign and the British High Commissioner of Malaysia came together to celebrate and honour our ocean, which connects us all with #WOW World Oceans Week. The aim was to bring awareness to the people around our blue planet and to get the conversations going on the various issues such as the ocean plastic pollution, the corals of ‘The Coral Triangle’, the voices of the youth on their ocean causes, and the agents of change – the diving community. By working together, we can — and will — protect and restore our shared ocean.

#WOW CONCLUSION & TESTIMONIALS
“While the actions of just one of us – YOU, may seem to be so very small with no effect at all, in fact knowing there are hundreds and thousands of people all doing the same thing is starting to have a truly positive effect”
“I see reasons for despair, everywhere I turn but I also see plenty of reason for hope and the one reasons for hope is when we stop killing things and stop dumping things into the ocean – It’s remarkable. Nature is resilient.
Sir David Attenborough
Not indefinitely so – we can kill the last of anything, and then HOPE is gone.” Dr. Sylvia Earle
“This BluHope campaign will raise awareness on the scourge of ocean plastic pollution and the damage it causes to marine biodiversity. It will encourage action to tackle it.” RT Hon Zac Goldsmith, UK Environment Minister
“Protect what we have. Restore what’s been damage. And, reset our values.” Paul Rose
“We need to phase out our throwaway lifestyle. We need to value what we have. Reusing, replacing, redesigning, rethinking – all of that comes first.” Jo Ruxton
#WOW World Oceans Week #APE ADEX Pixel Virtual Expo (www.adex.asia) in partnership with Blu Hope Campaign (www.bluhope.org) and supported by the British High Commissioner of Malaysia, and partners, Jo Ruxton from Plastic Oceans UK and Geoff Brighty, an Environment Consultant, concluded the week-long 2020 edition, from Monday June 8 to Friday June 12, with great success! Shipwrecks of Maldives Parrotfish swim past shoals of Moorish Idols. Moray eels slide through the lagoon. Groupers make goliath appearances amidst the rainbow of butterflyfish and damselfish, while the resident Hawksbill turtle glides in for a visit; the underwater world beneath the Maldives azure waters is absolutely teeming with life. At times, you’ll be questioning reality when you have stumbled onto a scene straight out of Finding Nemo.
For a country made up of 99% ocean, the seas have always been the lifeblood for its people, an integral part of their existence, but the rising tourist numbers have also contributed to a scuba diving boom. Then again, it’s not just the visitors who have pulled on a wetsuit, thrust a regulator into their mouths, and ventured to the Maldivian waters. According to underwater explorer and former dive instructor of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Mohamed Shafraz Naeem, locals have become regulars on the diving scene as well. “I’ve been diving since 1994, and right now there’s a lot more opportunity than there used to be,” he said. “There’s so many talented local divers now,
67

and there’s also the presence of Maldivians in several dive expo’s that are held abroad. The rise of social media has helped promote diving in the country as well. However, despite the calls for climate change, there’s so little that has been addressed and we have a long way to go. I hope the Government of Maldives view this more seriously.” Many a ship have met a watery grave and lay scattered deep in the Maldivian waters, meaning some exploration-worthy wrecks lie on the ocean floor of this tropical diving paradise. Here’s a roundup of our favorite wrecks for an exciting underwater adventure:

SHIPWRECKS OF MALDIVES

British Loyalty, Addu Atoll Located 33-meters beneath the turquoise blue waters of Addu, lies the wreckage of the 5.5 ton oil tanker, the British Loyalty. It was torpedoed twice during World War II, and today it rests on her starboard side, with the port side at 16m. Dense hard and soft corals now grow all over the ship, including on the propeller which sits at 28m. Divers can also swim through the large hole made by the torpedo to explore the ship’s interior. The site harkens back to an incredibly interesting point in Maldivian history and is a must for those interested in the British presence in the country.
The Shipyard, Lhaviyani Atoll, East of Felivaru Kandu The stern of the upright ship lies 29 meters at the bottom of the ocean. The wrecks have inundated in a remarkably short period in soft and hard coral - consequences from strong currents streaming through the channel. In the wrecks are many morays, which glance inquisitively at divers from the protection of their metallic refuge, and in every recess are huge schools of yellow sweeper that glisten blindingly in torchlight. The wrecks have become home to a multitude of fish, including boxfish, pufferfish, porcupinefish, Napoleon, emperor, angelfish, surgeon, and red bass. A school of tallfin batfish allows divers to come close and lying on the bottom of the wreckage it is often possible to see a nurse shark. In the channel, pelagics and grey reef sharks are regularly sighted.
Kuda Giri Wreck, South Male’ Atoll, between Maafushi and Dhigufinolhu To the west of Dhigufinolhu island lies a small, submerged patch of coral known locally as a giri, (kuda translates small in Dhivehi). On its south-west side, lies a wreck of a steel fishing trawler, which has been lying on the sandy bottom at 35m for more than a decade. The vessel lies upright with its bow pointing towards the reef at about 18m. The deck slopes down towards the stern, which is at about 30m. Both soft and hard corals adorn the outside of the vessel, and divers can find a resident school of batfish, glassfish, wrasses and jackfish. There’s also the chance to spot frog and leaf fish, as well as on the reef itself, which is extremely pretty and well worth exploring after the wreck.
Kudhi Maa, Machchafushi House Reef, South Ari Atoll This steel, Japanese cargo vessel, sometimes also simply known as Machchafushi Wreck, was sunk in 1998. Since then the vessel has been inundated with life – both soft and hard corals compete with sponges, algae and sea squirts for space on this 30m ship, making this a fantastic spot for observing and photographing macro life. In addition to a profusion of critters, divers can find large lionfish, boxfish and pufferfish around the vessel. Diving enthusiasts wishing to explore the interior can easily do so from access points on either side of the hull.

The SS Sea Gull, Location: North east of Gaafaru Island, North Male’ Atoll
Lady Christine, Gaafaru outside reef, North Male’ Atoll
The Corbin, Location: Goidhoo Island House Reef.
In 1879, the SS Sea Gull, a 1012 tonne steamship, was travelling from London to Calcutta when she ran aground outside Gaafaru. Today, the anchor sits on the reef at one metre and can be spotted at low tide. The rest of the ship split in two and other pieces are scattered across the reef, such as the two-cylinder engine. Due to the length of time in the water, the wreckage parts are almost entirely covered in coral, which at times makes it easy to miss. There is also a cave at 30m, where it’s possible to spot nurse sharks. Elsewhere, divers can often see barracudas, jacks, eels and stingrays.
Before she ran aground on the north west side of Gaafaru on April 16th 1974, the Lady Christine had been conducting survey work and laying communications cables. When stormy weather meant that a tugboat was unable to pull her from the reef local workers were frantically called upon to rescue all valuables from the ship as she began filling with water. The ship owners eventually resorted to blasting holes in the reef to create a channel as a last-ditch attempt to save the ship, but all efforts proved ineffectual. When all salvage attempts were wrapped up, the vessel was abandoned. The ship now sits about 300m west of Hulhangu Kandu, with the bow visible above the surface. Most of the wreck lies scattered on the reef above ten metres and an incredible variety of marine life can be found in the vicinity – fish, eels, rays, sharks and turtles. There are also some beautiful caves at 30m, which many divers explore first, before making their way to the wreck for the remainder of the dive.
The Corbin, a French ship which ran aground on the reef of Goidhoo Island in 1602, is best known in the Maldives for being the vessel that brought French sailor and memoirist François Pyrard de Laval to the country. A survivor of the wreck, Pyrard was held in captivity in the Maldives for five years, only managing to leave when a band of marauders from India helped him escape. He then went on to publish an account of his time in the country and the journal provides one of the richest historical insights into the Maldives’ past. Although nothing remains of the vessel, the site still prompts intrigue, especially amongst those who know that the vessel’s cargo of many thousands of silver coins is still scattered across the ocean floor, waiting to be retrieved.

EXCLUSIVE HONDA TECHNOLOGY BLAST SYSTEM
VTEC TECHNOLOGY
Improve your acceleration at low speeds. A quick movement of the throttle control activates the Boosted Low Speed Torque, or BLAST system, advancing the ignition curve aggressively. Holeshot is vastly improved as more horsepower gets the hull up on plane, quicker.
Smooth acceleration and power. Honda’s Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system gives you a broader, flatter torque curve and smooth power delivery throughout the engine’s operating range. This is designed to help ensure outstanding performance, without sacrificing fuel economy.
Dual-Stage Induction Breathing easier improves performance. Honda’s unique variable intake system maximizes combustion efficiency for increased torque and fuel economy. The plenum chamber with twin butterfly valves varies the volume and velocity of airflow, which means a simple, compact design that enhances both low-speed drivability and high-speed performance.
Lean Burn Control Designed for better fuel economy. This feature is engineered to help increase fuel efficiency by allowing combustion to operate on a leaner air-to-fuel mixture. Lean Burn Control automatically adjusts the air-fuel mix according to speed and load, helping to maximize power throughout the rpm range. At cruising speed, Honda engines with Lean Burn Control run on up to 20% less fuel than other comparably sized outboards without Lean Burn Control.
4-Front Corrosion Protection Fight the elements. Your Honda is engineered to look and perform like new with our protection system that includes a patented, doublesealed, multi-layered paint process, sacrificial anodes, stainless steel components and waterproof connectors.
3-Way Cooling System Cool-running durability. Three separate cooling systems help keep the cylinder heads running cooler for longterm durability.

Torsion Dampener Improved handling. Sometimes called the flywheel, this component is located near the base of the powerhead. The design lowers the centre of gravity for improved handling, hull manoeuvrability and minimal vibration.

Sealed Starter Protection for long life. The starter motor is inverted in a sealed chamber that helps protect the starter bendix drive from the elements. The result is solid dependability.
PGM-FI (MULTI-PORT PROGRAMMED FUEL-INJECTION) Powerful performance. You get the precise amount of air and fuel to each cylinder, resulting in quick starts, instant throttle response, low fuel consumption and powerful performance.
AMP+ Helps prevent battery drain. At idle, when electrical loads demand additional amperage, the electronic control module automatically increases the engine RPMs by 100 to produce an additional 9 amps. AMP+ helps prevent battery drain caused by simultaneously running multiple accessories—a concern when you’re fishing far offshore.
Direct Air Intake System More efficient combustion. The BF250 offers another industry first: separate dual air circuits. The first intake circuit cools the engine by drawing air into the front of the engine and circulating it around critical engine components. The second intake circuit directs cool air from the upper intake vents, separates out moisture, and then inducts it into the throttle body. This system provides cooler, denser air for better combustion, compared to conventional under-cowl induction systems.

Accommodation 4 Cabins: Double Bed and Queen Beds En-suite Shower
White Sand is the identical twin of Sun Kissed - enjoy an intimate holiday sailing on either one of these two identical catamarans. Sailing a catamaran means enjoying all the exhilaration of yachting on a more stable platform. This is the kind of boat you can take anywhere in the world and have a comfortable home. The hull flare/chin above the waterline contributes towards longitudinal
stiffness and reserve buoyancy in the ends while adding critical interior volume while keeping hulls below the waterline narrow and easy to drive. Our catamarans have four doublecabin configurations including a forepeak bunk in the forward cabins - perfect for sleeping 8-10 in absolute comfort.
