Due to its geographical setting, the customs and social behavior of Maldivians have been greatly influenced by Africa, Arabia, India, Sri Lanka and East Asia; with unique traditions shaped by the island nature and the ocean. Some Maldivian dishes are influenced and fused with flavors of the rich spicy taste of India and Sri Lanka. However, many of the traditional Maldivian dishes are unique to the island nation; fresh, smoked and dried tuna, grated coconut and coconut milk form the main ingredients most of traditional dishes. Maldivian arts and crafts have been heavily influenced by the country’s environment. Coral stone carvings and calligraphy that adorn mosques hundreds of years ago, bear witness to the deft skills of Maldivian craftsmen.
Maldives is typically bright, hot and humid all year round. There are two monsoons: South-West (Hulhangu) Monsoon from May - October and North-East (Iruvai) Monsoon from November - April. Temperatures range between 24°C AND 33°C throughout the year.

CULTURE The Philippines is a tropical country which boasts volcanic islands, forests, and sandy beaches. To visit the Philippines is to become engulfed by a kaleidoscope of culture and tradition, with the varied blend of races that have influenced this group of islands for thousands of years. Most influences are results of previous colonization, deriving mainly from the culture of Spain and the United States. It is a mixture of Malayo-Polynesian and Hispanic cultures with an influence of Chinese. Their art, music, architecture and dance are all influenced by the mixture of these people. Despite all of these influences, the old Asian culture of Filipinos has been retained and are clearly seen in their way of life, beliefs and customs. 80% of Filipino people practice the Christian religion, making up about 80% of the Philippine population (mostly Catholics) while Islam is 11%. 9

Sri Lanka with its massively rich cultural diversity, is encompassed by many customs and rituals, colorful festivals, indigenous medicine (Ayurveda), Sri Lankan cuisine, world heritage sites, arts, tea, sports, and wild life safaris. Sri Lankan culture is influenced by the prominent religions prevailing the country – Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. Known as one of the countries with the most public holidays, all four religions in Sri Lanka have religious celebrations and festivities, most of which are considered public holidays for the entire country. One very intriguing holiday is Poya, an island-wide celebration of the full moon celebrated every single month. Another famous aspect of country is the Ratnapura area – world-famous for the sapphires and rubies found in the watery soil.
Sri Lanka’s climate is tropical and consists of distinct wet and dry seasons. Generally speaking, the coastal areas of Sri Lanka enjoy temperatures averaging 28°C while the upland areas are cooler and more temperate, with a yearly average around 16-20°C. The First InterMonsoon Season is from March to April, and the Southwest Monsoon Season, known locally as Yala, is from May to September. The Second Inter-Monsoon Season is from October to November and the Northeast Monsoon Season is from December to February.

In addition, MEQ offers a wide range of marine lifesaving equipment which are essential, mandatory and recommended for everything from small boats up to commercial vessels. All the safety equipment is in compliance with regulations and safety standard of Transport Authority of Maldives. The marine industry is booming drastically. There is a diverse collection of Marine Equipments offered by different dealers and suppliers in the market today, which have different functionalities and operations. The best supplier always provides quality and originality in their equipments. Good quality marine equipment is the best investment that boat owners can make. It is always better to buy quality spare parts instead of substituting the same parts frequently. Of course, things will still wear out over time and parts will need replacing. Hence, it is vital to have a good relationship with the best equipment suppliers to run the boat smoothly. One important aspect to keep in mind, is that it’s absolutely critical to only use marine-grade products when maintaining and repairing your boat. Equipment sold for home-use simply cannot and will not hold up over time in the marine environment. Everything on a boat is constantly subjected to moisture, sunlight and in many situations salty spray as well — therefore, materials produced for boat maintenance and repairs absolutely cannot be substituted with those intended for use on dry land. Marine Equipments’ success is followed by a number of satisfied customers who trust the company with their capacity to provide quality products and services. MEQ is dedicated towards ensuring that all their services are tailored to exceed their clients’ expectations.

MATT WENGER Regional Manager at PADI
Tell us about your journey to PADI? How did it all begin? Firstly, allow me to thank Floating Asia for the opportunity to be part of this interview, I wish you all an amazing 2021 and the very best of success in years to come. I have started diving at a young age, fascinated by the adventure and beauty of underwater. With a background in the hospitality industry in Switzerland, I had the opportunity to do an internship at a resort in the Caribbean, where I had the chance to climb the ladder in the PADI certification system during my days off, eventually becoming a PADI professional in 1998. It was very clear to me to stay in the diving industry and

Although growing up surrounded by mountains, I always loved being in the water, scuba diving was just the perfect activity to combine both my favourite hobbies, travelling and diving. I think my biggest inspiration was as a child watching the adventures of Jacques Cousteau on TV, and in later years my former boss and mentor Marco Zubrod, he was a key figure in my life and I need to thank him for hall he has done for me, he shaped me professionally to where I am today.

PADI’s tag line – Seek Adventure, Save the Ocean – is a rallying call to divers everywhere to join us in our quest for one billion torchbearers who are ready to help make these changes.
How many dive locations have you visited around the world and which is your favourite spot? What is the next stop on your dive bucket list?
experience, we had 35 candidates from all over the world participating at the two weeks program. We arrived all as strangers but left as good friends, I have fond memories indeed.
I have pretty much been all over the world, thanks to my job as PADI scuba instructor and later as employee of the PADI organisation itself. In my early professional years, I have been mostly in the Caribbean, and then in South East Asia. The Maldives have a very special part in my life, not only did I meet my wife there eleven years ago, but had as well the opportunity to work as dive centre manager for Silversands at Anantara as well as for the Park Hyatt brand at Hadahaa. I was offered the PADI Regional Manager role in 2015, which allows me to travel within the archipelago and visit some of the most amazing resort and beautiful local islands.
In terms of diver training certification, how would you benchmark PADI-qualified trainers?
I’d love to explore Indonesia in particular Raja Ampat and certainly on my bucket list would be the Chagos Island just south of the Maldives.
Our oceans are under incredible pressure from mankind’s activities – the damage caused to reefs through plastic pollution and climate change represents the single biggest threat to the diving industry. The only way to overcome this is through sustained, long term actions and habit changes by the global population. PADI’s tag line – Seek Adventure, Save the Ocean – is a rallying call to divers everywhere to join us in our quest for one billion torchbearers who are ready to help make these changes.
What led you to becoming a PADI Course Director and Examiner and how long did it take you to become certified? I became a PADI professional in 1998 and during the subsequent years continued my professional career and in 2011 I became a PADI Course Director in the Dominican Republic. The PADI Course Director program (CDTC) is very demanding at the same time rewarding
PADI members are the most in-demand scuba professionals in the world. The success of PADI’s educational system comes from the training and preparation of PADI Instructors (including the unique Instructor Development Course and Instructor Examination), the world class educational systems that are used, and the dedication and professionalism of PADI members everywhere. What are some of the challenges you face in this industry and how do you overcome them?

What are some of your proudest moments in the sphere of diving? Some of my proudest moments must have been diving with my elder daughter and my wife, we had the opportunity to stay a few days at the Six Senses in Laamu, and the reefs there are just amazing. I think professionally the proudest moments were to dive with our CEO and President Dr Drew Richardson, he visited the Maldives in 2018 during an event Euro-Divers Maldives and LUX* Maldives South Ari have organized. What is your favourite underwater creature to observe, and what sort of changes in the marine environment have you seen over the years? Ufffff that’s a tough question, but I guess I would need to go with the spotted eagle ray and the juvenile box fish. But to be fair to the other underwater creatures, I actually love them all, they are all my favourites. Floating Asia hopes to highlight sustainable business practices and conservation projects in order to encourage our guests to look at how they travel and what they can do to conserve the marine environment. As a professional diver, do you think dive tourism has a role in conservation and sustainable tourism? Dive tourism is a critical part of protecting the ocean. People are most prepared to protect the things that they understand. By introducing the world to scuba, PADI has helped raise awareness of this important issue – and by bringing together one billion torchbearers over the coming years, we will be able to action real change in the way the world interacts with our oceans. What would be your key advice to the millennials who are interested in choosing diving as a profession? Diving represents a career like no other: a chance to work in nature alongside wonderful people and in incredible places. It’s not always easy, but it is always rewarding! Be sure to train thoroughly and to never stop learning!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
SPICE ROUTE LUXURY CRUISES
The Floating Asia team had the privilege to have an Exclusive Interview with the two leading partners: Scaria Jobin & Jobin Joseph to understand the Tropical Discovery What inspired you to initiate Spice Route Luxury Cruises in Alleppey, Kerala? Alleppey is a place that is very close to our hearts. We actually grew up in and around Alleppey and are personally involved with all aspects of the hospitality. One thing we came to realise is that when agents sell holiday packages in Kerala to tourists interested in booking houseboats, people tend to get a boat that is totally different from the one they booked initially – which, unfortunately, happened on numerous occasions. We, the three managing partners, believed that we could provide tourists with a trustworthy service, where they get exactly what they want – and more. This is how Spice Routes Luxury Cruises was born in the year 2008. We were the very first houseboat operator to introduce an air-conditioned experience from check-in to check-out, combining the rustic charm of local life on the backwaters and creating a name for ourselves as one of the best Alleppey backwater cruises with ultra-luxury houseboats. Our houseboat cruises offer a unique blend of a genuine desire to show the most authentic parts of the backwaters to travellers, along with the professionalism of an international travel partner. Having been in operation for the past 12 years, what are the key markets that you are focusing on? We see travellers from a variety of international markets. Our key regular markets include USA, UK and Germany. Some of our recent markets include Israel, Middle East, far east Asia and Australia. With modern advancements in technology and the ever-changing trends in the industry, what are the mediums used to market Spice Routes Luxury Cruises? Over the past decade, technological advancements have evolved exponentially. last year, online marketing and communications has progressed to great lengths. Today, the tools available at our fingertips have amazing potential to drive revenue to absolutely any business – when utilised effectively. Without digital marketing in our strategy, we would be missing out on a large portion of our market. Our informative and easy-to-navigate website is updated regularly, and we get a great amount of organic traffic. And, let’s face it, social media has literally taken over the world. We try to increase our brand awareness, generate

leads and communicate with our customers via various social media tools. We also conduct email and direct marketing. While cruising through the backwater rivers of Alleppey, what are some of the unique attractions that tourists can experience? Our guests love the fact that check-in and orientation of Spice Routes takes place in a 200-year-old heritage home situated on a private farm of seven acres. You get the unique opportunity to wander through the unspoilt countryside with lush paddy fields clinging to the side of the roads with whitewashed churches peeking through stark greens, before heading to our beautiful heritage home. A tryst with typical Keralan architecture is a great way to start your journey before boarding your houseboat and starting your Alleppey backwater cruise. The Alleppey backwaters are a world-renowned attraction and a beacon of Kerala’s vast showcase of nature, heritage, adventure and Ayurveda based attractions. Scores of boats ply in the main backwater regions adjoining the Alleppey town. Our luxury boats are anchored almost ten kilometres away from the bustle of the town in the waters skirting the Chennamkary Village. Guest can experience the village life of the backwaters of Alleppey, along with canoe rides, toddy tapping and more. What are the main initiatives taken by Spice Routes Luxury Cruises in terms of sustainable tourism? We give utmost significance to our sustainability initiatives, as we believe that we owe a great deal of gratitude to our mother earth and our local community. We set up a large internal aerobin for all biodegradable waste from our ultra-luxury houseboats. The waste is collected after each trip and transported there to convert into compost, which is then used in the adjoining papaya farm. It’s great for soil conditioning at our farm and garden area. Additionally, the bags used to line the dustbins on the boats are 100% bio-degradable. One other feature that contributes greatly towards a memorable experience for most of our guests, is the delicious Keralan food. We ensure that more than eighty percent of the food is from our own farm and the surrounding villages, as well as fresh from the river. Besides our sprawling papaya tree farm, we also have a kitchen garden, allowing us to offer fresh and organic food to our guests. At Spice Routes, you are in the heart of the lush Kuttanad region, known for vast tracts of paddy fields and abundant fresh produce, ensuring that the freshest, tastiest foods reach your plates. We have banned all single-use plastic items from our

houseboats and farm since 2016. All guests are provided with glass bottles, that are filled with purified water daily, along with a date stamp. Even during canoe rides or any other outdoor activity, we carry glass bottles for our guests. We further encourage guests to take any plastic bottle back with them, in case they happen to bring it along. Another aspect is that ninety percent of our staff hails from around the Chennamkary village. With a strength of over 30 staff members, we ensure that the local villagers get employment with the aim of improving the livelihoods of their families. We even hire canoes from local boatmen, and all activities in village homes are paid for so the people sharing their lives with our guests are well-

compensated, apart from having extraordinary interactions. We also started an initiative in 2019 to empower the women of Kavalam village called “Kavalam Calling”, inspired by hardworking women. The women of Kavalam decided to come together, forming a stitching unit where they make cloth bags which have replaced plastic bags at the houseboats. This project has offered sustainable means of employment for the women of the village. What are your tips for various categories of travellers such as honeymooners, families and solo travellers? Kerala is a small state with immense diversity. It has a unique beauty and an abundance of products to serve all types of travellers including, but not limited to, honeymooners, solo travellers and families. When booking through approved travel agents, they will be more than happy to provide you with a large variety of activities to choose from and add to your itinerary. You can even do some research online to easily see all the exciting activities you can take part in, catering to all ages and preferences. Do you have plans to expand your routes outside of Kerela? Yes, we actually have plans to expand across South India. However, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, these plans have been delayed and is moving forward at a slower pace – understandably. We will be sure to keep you posted on this venture of ours. Do you operate year-round or seasonally? What are your peak seasons?
What is the difference and do you plan on developing more houseboats and increasing your services to your clientele? The six houseboats we offer are; Saffron, with one bedroom and a jacuzzi for two guests; Pepper, with two bedrooms for four guests; Cinnamon, with three bedrooms for six guests; Clove, with three bedrooms for six guests; Fennel, also with three bedrooms for six guests; and Tamarind, with five bedrooms for ten guests. Additionally, we do have plans for further expansions, as we are looking to add more houseboats in about a year or so. What are the biggest challenges you have faced in this industry, and do you have any advice for young entrepreneurs? Currently, our biggest challenge, as you know, is the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism is always the first to be hit and last to recover from any such calamities. The boating industry will now require robust screening and monitoring protocols, implementation of comprehensive sanitation practices with regular inspections and expanded onboard medical facilities. We will also be working more closely with public health authorities. Our advice to any young entrepreneur who is interested in the houseboating industry would be to always be aware, vigilant and smart in the market scenario. Make sure to have backup plans and safety nets in your business model, and don’t let any such disasters put you down – take it as a challenge and keep moving forward.
Our peak season is from the 15th of December to the 15th of January annually. However, we operate from October to March every year. We ensure that only a single booking is assigned per boat, so you don’t have to share even the common lounge area, dining room or the deck with anyone else. After all, the evocative backwaters are best experienced in your own time and pace.

MODERN. COMFORT. PERFORMANCE. PRACTICALITY
The Maldives is surrounded by the shores of 1190 islands in 26 atolls scattered across the middle of the equator in the Indian Ocean. Located in Raa Atoll lies Alifushi island, where two innovative and highly skilled designers dreamt big. With a strong vision intact, passion, determination and commitment, two friends – Ibrahim Moosa Sujau and Aslam Ibrahim – founded Offshore Yard Pvt Ltd, in order to materialise their dream of designing and building boats locally, with innovative, marine technology and high standards. In 2007, the two friends set up a new factory space and an office to accommodate the construction of three vessels stretching up to 150 feet in length, and enabling the company to perform almost all of the work, in-house. The creation of a new boat begins in Offshore Yard’s Design Center, located onsite in the Alifushi manufacturing facility. Here, concepts are taken from hand-drawn sketches, to detailed CAD designs, then to full-scale floor models meticulously created using a variety of materials. The company completed their very first handcrafted boat in the year 2010, and they have continued to build luxury timber and fiberglass boats since then, ranging from 5 to 40 metres.

Additionally, Offshore values the suggestions of their clients, boat operators, captains and a select group of Marine Industry dealerships that join them to offer recommendations from the customer- and dealerperspective. “Our design and engineering teams constantly reassess and refine the plans for each new model,” explains the Chief Designer Sujau. “The floor models allow our design team to ‘live’ with each new concept for a while – to test clearances, measurements and equipment placement. It provides a hands-on opportunity to experience the feel of a craft prior to prototype development. Once a new model has been perfected, different full-scale prototype vessels are manufactured to bring together the systems and materials encompassed in each Offshore boat. The Product Launch Area is directly adjacent to the Design Center, permitting easy and direct communication throughout the launching process.”

Finished with Fins is the largest shark conservation campaign in the world and was set up with the sole purpose of reducing demand for shark fin. A hundred million sharks are killed each year to satisfy the shark fin trade – shark fin soup in particular – resulting in a near unrestrained killing of sharks which is driving them to extinction. Not only is this the case, but during this brutal process, the shark is treated with immense cruelty; it is lifted up onto the boat, its fins are cut off and the shark is then thrown back into the sea – still alive – sent to die a slow death as it sinks to the bottom of the sea, unable to swim, literally drowning to death. A survey conducted by PR agency, Grayling - in Singapore, confirmed findings that indicated a significant number of people in Chinese communities are aware of the problems associated with shark fin soup (such as the large dose of the neurotoxin Mercury one ingests when consuming the soup) and are pushing to stop or reduce their consumption. However, the study also found that a long-standing sense of tradition, as well as the social pressure to eat and serve shark fin soup, resulted in the continuation of eating and serving it. For this reason, the campaign also works to reinforce the reasons not to eat shark fin soup, by educating people who are still not aware of the dangers caused by the shark fin trade and correcting the falsehoods put out by those who benefit from it. The campaign strives to make a significant difference to our perception of sharks and their importance to our ecosystems.
Sharks have evolved in a tight inter-dependency with their ecosystem. Jonn Lu from FINished with Fins explains: “Sharks play a key role in our oceans’ food chains. As apex predators, sharks help keep the world’s marine ecosystems balanced. If shark populations are depleted, a critical link in the maintenance of global marine ecosystems will be disrupted, not only directly affecting the viability of commercial fisheries around the world, but also life on earth. Our oceans cover over 70% of the earth’s surface and houses 80% of life on earth, maintaining this ecosystem is crucial. The oceans help absorb excess carbon dioxide and heat energy from the atmosphere, controlling our climate and keeping our air safe to breathe. Yet sharks are being depleted worldwide, just to feed the unsustainable demand for shark fin soup. The exponential growth in consumption of shark fin soup is responsible for the alarming decline in shark population.” With such a significant decline of shark populations, it is not surprising that scientists are seeing dangerous and unpredictable changes in the ocean’s ecosystems. The removal of sharks from reef systems has led to a sharp drop in the number of fish that help keep corals healthy. In places where the ecosystem has been left intact, it is plain to see that the reefs are better equipped to recover from coral disease and the problems that are developing through global warming.

Having lobbied for a law to protect the sharks and working tirelessly for the law to pass, as well as working against illegal shark fishing and its disastrous consequences for the past 12 years, the Soneva Group has now joined the cause along with commitments from over 100 of Hong Kong’s taste makers and opinion leaders and 150 celebrities from Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and China. “This is a busy year for us all at the Soneva Group,” says Soneva founder and CEO Sonu Shivdasani. “With so many plans underway to improve and enhance the experiences at our resorts, we are sure to never lose sight of our commitment to environmentally responsible tourism. At each and every stage of these projects, there lies the fundamental question of how we interact with our natural surroundings. The experiences at our resorts are intrinsically linked to nature; be it the organic home-grown ingredients on our plate, the locally sourced products in our spa or free diving, the most natural way of discovering the underwater world in one breath.” Sonu and Eva Shivdasani have pledged their support locally and globally to help recruit other corporations to support shark conservation. They have also offered their resort in the Maldives, Soneva Fushi, as regional headquarters for the campaign and have recruited the help of their in-house marine biologist, Frederica Siena and Free Diving expert Ken Kiriyama to help prevent the illegal poaching of sharks in Maldivian waters.
Back in 2000, our waters were teeming with sharks, however as the years have gone by the shark population has depleted significantly. This led to the Maldivian government commendably introducing a ban on shark fishing in all its waters in 2010. The ban was a great step forward for shark conservation however it only prevented fishermen from hunting sharks in up to 12 nautical miles (22 kilometres) off the atoll coasts. This has led to poachers operating and trading outside of the perimeter. We would like to see the perimeter extended further to make it a lot more difficult for shark fishing and trading to take place and try and put a stop to it once and for all. “Another area where I believe we can help is partnering with other resorts to drive home the message that the Maldives travel industry is FINished with Fins. The Maldives epitomises the ultimate in holiday destinations and therefore we have access to a number of influential corporations and holidaymakers who I am sure would be keen to get on board and help protect sharks. These animals are intrinsic to our ecosystem and their continuing decline in population will have a dramatic effect on all our lives” - says Sonu Shivdasani. Jonn Lu adds: “We are delighted to sign up Sonu and Eva Shivdasani as ambassadors for the campaign. We not only look to work with celebrities but also opinion leaders who can help us reverse the shark fin consumption trend in Asia and the rest of the world. By securing ambassadors, such as Sonu and Eva, we can garner support from the luxury travel and tourism industry to help us change people’s views on eating shark fin soup and help protect an animal that is intrinsic to our way of life.”

PARLEY
Parley believes the power for change lies in the hands of the consumer – given we all have a choice – and the power to shape this new consumer mindset lies in the hands of the creative industries. Artists, musicians, actors, filmmakers, fashion designers, journalists, architects, product inventors, and scientists have the tools to mold the reality we live in and to develop alternative business models and ecologically sensible products to give us earthlings an alternative choice, an everyday option to change something. Parley has been created to accelerate a process of change that is already in progress. No other big movement in the history of humankind has developed faster than the environmental cause. We want to make sure we are fast enough to meet the ultimate deadline and turn the ship around before we lose a treasure we have only just started to explore and still don’t fully understand: the fantastic blue universe beneath us — The Oceans.
Parley is the space where creators, thinkers, and leaders come together to raise awareness for the beauty and fragility of our oceans and collaborate on projects that can end their destruction.
There Is No Magic Fix for Complex Ocean Threats. But There Are Simple Steps We Can Take to Be Part of The Solution.
The Republic of the Maldives is one of the most beautiful and geographically disparate nations in the world with a vast stretch of 1200 islands spread across 26 coral atolls in the Indian Ocean. As Parley’s first Future Island Nation, the Maldives is creating the blueprint for global change with steps towards a new, blue economy to safeguard its future and lead change by educating, empowering and connecting an ecosystem of ocean champions. This goal inspires — and has in many ways been shaped by — Parley Maldives Executive Director, Shaahina Ali. Maldives joins Parley for the Oceans as founding member of “Future Island Nation” program and have announced the extension of their partnership to create a scalable, nationwide framework for solutions towards the achievement of SDG 7, SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 12, SDG 13, SDG 14 and SDG 15 under the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The island nation was the first to answer a global call to action led by Parley in collaboration with the UN-OHRLLS to demonstrate how small island developing states (SIDS) can become leaders in the fight to end marine plastic pollution by implementing the Parley AIR Strategy (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign) in a collaborative, innovative approach to solutions.

Parley Maldives works to reduce reliance on single-use plastics, intercept sources of plastic waste, and prevent it from entering the oceans or being disposed of in destructive ways. We’ve introduced plastic interception and baling sites in island communities and more than 70 schools, collaborative cleanups on affected coastlines, and the first-ever recycling center and innovation lab in the capital, Malé.
The government of the Republic of the Maldives, businesses and industry leaders, and dozens of local schools have taken the Parley AIR Pledge (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign) to reduce their plastic use, boost recycling, and support the creation of new materials and methods. Participating members join our global network of governments, major brands, industry experts and environmentalists working together to create change.

Parley Ocean School programs educate local youth on the state of the oceans and immerse them in the marine environment. Through in-school lectures and experiences on and in the water (e.g. swimming, snorkeling, surfing and stand-up paddle board lessons), Parley empowers Ocean Guardians to be champions of Parley AIR. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, schools and NGOs, our programs have helped more than 100,000 youth and their parents go snorkeling to experience the world beneath the blue surface, many for the very first time.

“IF THE OCEANS DIE, WE DIE” by Captain Paul Watson
“We all need to have our passion and our beliefs changed, not just by signing an agreement, but by personally getting involved and protecting our oceans for the future. We are people of the ocean but we have never really felt the ocean. We have taken it for granted. Curriculum change, collection change, and behavior change are all vitally important.” Shaahina Ali, Director, Parley Maldives
Establishing the first nationwide implementation of Parley AIR, Shaahina has grown and engaged a network of island communities, schools, resorts, businesses, NGOs and government agencies in programs to reduce plastic waste, introduce recycling programs, boost eco-innovation, strengthen existing conservation efforts and inspire a new generation of ocean advocates. From swimming, snorkeling and diving lessons to community education on the impacts of plastic pollution, Shaahina’s work has helped people of all backgrounds, especially young Maldivians, experience the ocean and understand the fast-changing world beneath the surface.
